My crazy ass is gonna try for a trifold pamphlet

#

Gonna try to learn Affinity hahaha

onyx fractal
#

Hell yeah

honest pawn
#
    1. Cover + Introduction
        a. Coordination clock: Reinforcements able to be mustered
        b. Everything is Risky and Difficult (baseline)
        c. Sacrifice Structure, Stress, Equipment, CP, and Overcharge to stack the odds and achieve success
    2. "The Best Defense is a Timeless Track"
        a. How it helps in narrative
            i. reroll when acting in your song’s ideals
        b. How it helps in combat
            i. Effect triggers when playing the objective
    3. Exploration
        a. Location map
        b. Key (6 locations)
        c. Random Encounters
    4. Combat
        a. Combat map
        b. Enemy Opfor
        c. Encounter details
    5. Conclusion
#

Just visualizing in my head how these are all gonna fit

onyx fractal
#

song?

honest pawn
onyx fractal
#

Oh sick

#

Shooting for a trifold is a great goal

#

I sort of fear that I won't have time to make a trifold and will only have time to make something a few pages long instead

honest pawn
#

When you act in accordance to the song’s ideal, you get a bonus in narrative

When you do some objective action in combat, play your hype track and get a bonus (always clear Jammed)

#

And yeah not sure if it’ll all fit but it’s something I wanna try and do to break out of the typical layout

#

I’ve said it before but even as the creator of a lancer rpg template I wanna see more Stolen Crown-like attempts at layout in the Lancer sphere

#

I’m glad my template has made things accessible (as intended) but I believe it’s time to go beyond

onyx fractal
#

agreed

#

Another potential blog topic: pricing

#

Currently pondering $2 with some number of community copies

honest pawn
#

Here’s the post:

what do you think your thing is worth?

Now double it

#

Triple it

onyx fractal
#

heh

#

We'll see once it gets done

#

If I go all out with custom art I may bump it up

honest pawn
#

If you think it’s worth nothing, add $1 and then multiply the total by 10

#

No one wins the race to the bottom

onyx fractal
#

The debate is really about whether it should be free/pwyw or not

#

I think it has value and I think it's fair to ask for compensation

honest pawn
#

The answer is neither imo, it should be paid

onyx fractal
#

On the other hand, I want it to be accessible

honest pawn
#

Community copies make sense for that at least

onyx fractal
#

Yeah

#

Hence the paid + community copies idea

#

People who can pay can self-select

#

I've never claimed a community copy, I don't think

#

I usually pay

#

Maybe I'm weird

honest pawn
#

The only reason I made #1254229800952922193 PWYW is because I had zero testing beforehand and wanted to make sure I quickly hit a wide audience for playtesting; even then in retrospect I think I should’ve slapped a minimum price on it

idle cedar
#

if you want to get started early, there's a trick (?) that some jammers use
which is to just work on something general that can integrate any theme into it

#

and the theme will be abstract...

onyx fractal
#

Yeah I saw some very not-abstract theme submissions

#

Like "implement this very specific adventure scenario"

honest pawn
idle cedar
honest pawn
#

If it works, it works haha

idle cedar
honest pawn
#

Yeah I think a good example of an abstract theme is this Mothership Month’s “crime” theme

#

So then we get space trucker smugglers, heists, bounty hunters, medical malpractice, murder mysteries…

onyx fractal
#

also the One Page Dungeon contest themes

#

2023: "And Still They Rise"
2022: "Wonder"

#

Are the GALSIM files missions one-shots?

honest pawn
honest pawn
#

Lemme check

#

Yeah they’re all 3 fights a pop

onyx fractal
#

Gotcha

#

Somehow I thought Kat had worked on another one-shot after Tombs of Delios but maybe I gaslit myself

#

Oh it was Cathedral of the Deadstar which is a full length mission

fierce sedge
#

Can't stop folk from starting early, though I did think that part of the point of the game-jam was to make something within the time of the two weeks.

hollow turtle
#

I think most of the early stuff is just prep so we can just drop all the ingredients into the pot and start stirring when the timer goes off

idle cedar
hollow turtle
#

I think thats one thing I'm kinda nervous about.

I'd love to charge a couple bucks for my stuff but I have no clue how to

idle cedar
#

common issues are:

  • dividing up revenue
  • judge needs to be able to go through them without paying for every single submission
  • setting up payment stuff
hollow turtle
#

So i can shove some back to my artist and anyone who contributed

idle cedar
#

none of these are like, insurmountable
but a lot of jams just avoid the issue entirely

hollow turtle
#

Ive never sold stuff online before

idle cedar
#

you can make it free, not a problem at all

#

or if you know anyone else in the team who's monetized stuff before, they can make the listing too

#

you can still be listed in creators section

hollow turtle
#

I'd like to learn tho

#

Not foist it off on someone else

onyx fractal
hollow turtle
#

Fair

#

scribbles notes

idle cedar
#

pricing thoughts: maybe pwyw for the first week or so then go to paid+community copies

#

idk actually

#

anyway, I'm excited about the theme too

#

would love to close the poll and just start picking out top 10 or 15 or whatever

onyx fractal
#

Yeah I was considering limited-time PWYW, though initial launch and/or conclusion of jam are going to be the time it has the most eyes on it

#

Maybe PWYW until the jam is over

#

Another blog topic: playtesting!

#

I have two different places I can run IRL playtests

#

Might also try running some online

hollow turtle
#

Pwyw for the first (X) amount of days/weeks/length of jam does sound really cool

#

I think i want to run my one shot again but i wanna see if I can fit a bit of narrative play in there

#

See how it feels with the two combats

#

Get a better grasp on timing and what I can make smoother

honest pawn
#

Drivethru lets you set up royalty percentages automatically

#

Itch, it’s gonna have to go through someone first, unless you pay a lump sum to contributors instead

#

So yeah, now that you mention it, going Free on group projects is totally valid for itch reasons

hollow turtle
#

Having silly thoughts about design and this is probably one of those 'well duh' but the level at which you choose is likely to have a significant impact on the time it will take to play, and i don't believe it'd be linear.

More bell curve with LL0 and LL12s one shots taking the longest for possibly different and maybe obvious reasons

steel fog
honest pawn
#

One shot where if you take too long you must sacrifice a weapon/system at the end of your turn

#

For the LL12s with too much to use

hollow turtle
#

My LL12 one shot was full of people who never went that far in the system, and while they knew the rules pretty well, they weren't used to the supercharged nature of anything, though quickly caught onto their own mechs and what tricks they could pull

idle cedar
# steel fog ...pause, for layout? Teach me your ways

set page size to 8.5x11 inches (or whatever A4 size is)
then move shapes and text boxes around

You can also set up page templates and create new slides using the templates, or just copy/paste
you can also set up automatic page numbers

#1244874544859058227 message this was made in google slides

hollow turtle
#

It took time

honest pawn
#

PowerPoint and its equivalents are pretty damn good at adding layout guides for lining shit up properly yeah

steel fog
#

That's it????

#

Okay it's just scuff and not wizardry alright

#

If that truly is just it I might genuinely do that lmao

idle cedar
#

it's a bit scuff yeah

#

but it's pretty easy if you're new to layout stuff

honest pawn
#

If it works, it works

idle cedar
#

same with image editing
ppt is a great image editing tool for beginners

hollow turtle
#

I need to figure out what I'm gonna use for final format and its probably just gonna be google docs cuz free

steel fog
idle cedar
#

filter? create a square with 30% transparency and color of your choice, put it on top of the image, done
crop? natively supported
shaped crop? overlay a bunch of shapes

fierce sedge
idle cedar
#

if you're trying to make tokens, you can genuinely do it through ppt

fierce sedge
#

If you make something for an advanced group, you can count on them taking shorter turns generally.

#

If not, eh

fierce sedge
#

These two were made in PowerPoint for example

hollow turtle
#

I explained what i ran into with my LL12 one shot above. People knew the rules but were definitely tripping over the complexity they can pull off

#

By the end they were smoovin

#

But there were growing pains

fierce sedge
#

Tbc when I say level of experience I do also there assume level of experience at the level they're playing at too.

hollow turtle
#

While LL0 is likely to take time simply because newbies are more likely to pick it up because its the starting Lancer level.

Its a very... simple thought i was rotating in my brain

#

Thought it might be a good reminder to the possible participants to put out there

honest pawn
pastel thunder
hollow turtle
#

Yo Affinity is only $70

#

Thats whack, i want it

idle cedar
#

I could never put "only" and "$70" next to each other

hollow turtle
#

looks at adobe

#

Comparing it to that rn so

idle cedar
#

how much is adobe uh, stuff

#

I heard bad things about their license

honest pawn
hollow turtle
#

Adobe are assholes but i love photoshop too much so I sold my soul to them

#

Adobe is expensive tho

honest pawn
#

Like there’s at least 1 time per year Affinity suite goes on sale

#

But i dunno if it’ll do so again before the Jam

idle cedar
#

we do have some time before the jam if you wanna wait for sale

hollow turtle
#

Yeah I'm not rushing

honest pawn
#

Granted that’s time that could be spent learning the software but that’s up to you

#

I don’t know your life, live your dreams

hollow turtle
#

But it is nice to see '70 one time payment' not '270 a year' or whatever adobes doing

fierce sedge
hollow turtle
#

I was generalizing.

#

Just felt important to share

idle cedar
#

270/yr?? wild that they get any business

#

is that for like entire suite at least

fierce sedge
#

Platform economics~

honest pawn
#

You can get the full suite as a bundle at a discount of $30/month or $360 a year

idle cedar
#

idk how much I would have to make before I'm comfortable paying $276 for something I can get for $0 with GIMP
I'm sure it has more features (like circle tool lol) or whatever but like, damn

#

so goofy that gimp doesn't come with circle tool

hollow turtle
#

I was taught on photoshop and it just works really well so i don't wanna leave it

#

Toxic relationship

onyx fractal
#

I'm kind of in the same boat

#

Photoshop is the only real reason I have any desire to stay with adobe

hollow turtle
#

I do use inkscape for vector stuff!

#

That works really well but it definitely grinds my Illistrator gears occasionally

honest pawn
#

Inkscape has been helpful for the handful of vector graphics I’ve made/edited

#

I did make recreations of the Mech System headers with Inkscape ( like protocols and quick techs) but couldn’t get them to play nice in Word

hollow turtle
#

Word is touchy with way too much stuff ngl

honest pawn
#

God don’t I fucking know it lol

#

Just when I think I have a handle on it, it spontaneously treats my footers as restarting and then hides the “first page footer” on page 5

#

Don’t ask me to explain how Word’s footers work, it’s dark magic

idle cedar
#

i hate word i hate word i ha

#

i would rather write in html and css than write in word if I have to do anything fancier than markdown

naive hollow
#

Oh sure, go ahead

idle cedar
#

sharing analytics
kind of surprised that so many participants are from itch and not this discord

#

or at least, it got discovered from itch

honest pawn
#

idk how it counts, if at all, but it won't display as discord at least

idle cedar
#

discord is indeed not here

#

I didn't advertise it anywhere out of here so it's cool to see all these sources
(though advertising in announcement is a pretty big deal)

unborn bridge
#

Hm, I'm still looking for a group but I don't know what i can specialise in? Writer i guess? I also need to work on my artwork sign

frail moon
#

I think I'm going to aim for a like LL3 or 4 thing for 3-5 players and then after I make it Test it on my local gaggle of idiots I run games for on tuesdays. One fight, Narrative on both sides of it... maybe.

been a blast reading through all the bits since I last checked in though.

#

Also deliberately not looking into what others have submitted for Themes, I threw in Labyrinth and that's enough for me to know as it is lmao. Hopefully I remember to vote when the time comes!

sweet gale
#

I'm starting to have some ideas of what I could do, but it's currently theme waiting room o'clock for me

honest pawn
#

Imagining us all listening to the Mii designer music right now in the waiting room

idle cedar
#

announcing next jam to begin in one year and not announcing theme to torture everyone for the whole year this time
-# joking ofc

onyx fractal
#

I am okay with it :) I have plenty of things to do in the meantime

steel fog
idle cedar
#

honestly... if it gets popular enough we could make this a "one mission jam" and make it one month long or so too

thorny sand
#

one mission feels like a really good size for a lower effort game jam since that allows for the full use of lancers systems without rushing or compromising too much for the sake of time

#

making a one-shot in the lancer system is a bit of a challenge in itself, has been for me at least

steel fog
#

I'd certainly sign up for that too!

onyx fractal
#

I'm feeling the carrion call of Typst for layout

honest pawn
#

Carrion Call or Clarion Call? The former's implications are... unpleasant lol

fierce sedge
#

Could also be carry-on, if he's going on a trip.

onyx fractal
#

I don't even know

#

Maybe siren song

#

Playing with layout and typography

#

I need to fix the smallcaps tracking

#

I'm learning that typography might be the most important part of layout

honest pawn
#

yeah that's fair, it determines readability and how much space a word will take on the page

fierce sedge
#

It is, and is a fun skill to learn.

onyx fractal
idle cedar
#

kind of a hater about it haha

#

idk maybe if you have the money it's worth spending the money on fonts

onyx fractal
#

Heh true

#

Google Fonts has a pretty large library at this point

idle cedar
#

oh was this written before that

onyx fractal
#

I don't know

idle cedar
#

I was wondering why they're hating on all those free fonts

#

idk I'm a big roboto fan

#

I'm sure there's good layout tips in there though, will check out some other time

onyx fractal
#

I wouldn't read it as hating on free fonts as much as encouraging you not to get comfortable with what you already have just because you already have it

#

And yeah, I suggest starting at the beginning, or the summary of key rules at least

#

The site is not about choosing a font as much as it's about how to use typography effectively

#

Sizing, spacing, layout, etc.

unborn bridge
#

Cool stuff

onyx fractal
#

Oh hey, all Affinity products are 50% off right now for Black Friday

hollow turtle
#

LETS GO

#

Oh yeah

#

Thats a good price

#

$35

honest pawn
#

There we go, knew a sale was imminent

idle cedar
#

prophetic

hollow turtle
#

What other cool sales can you speak into existence 🤔

honest pawn
#

FoundryVTT is likely gonna go on sale if it hasn’t already

#

But yeah it’s Black Friday season, keep an eye out

#

Itch has its autumn sale coming up in <7 days, maybe there will be some cool assets or tools to pickup

onyx fractal
#

Maybe DungeonDraft? CartographyAssets?

honest pawn
#

It’s Black Friday season, it’s worth waiting a bit

#

Don’t need to be an Oracle to know that

hollow turtle
#

No Valk, you're ruining the mystery of your powers

idle cedar
#

Valk is ATHENA class allegation

onyx fractal
#

hurled a few more ideas on the pile

idle cedar
#

I've begun to file through the ideas

#

and group them together for poll

potent axle
#

I believe Foundry is just doing 20% off (also their 5e/2e modules).

hollow turtle
#

Affinity acquired

#

Can't wait to mess around with it

onyx fractal
#

You do have to downloads Alegreya/AlegreyaSC/Cooper Hewitt fonts though

sweet gale
#

Are there any options for these creative suites that work on Linux? bogotterLurk

onyx fractal
#

I wanna say Affinity works under WINE?

sweet gale
#

Otherwise I'm gonna be going wallflower act 3 and this baby is gonna be a loose ODT file

onyx fractal
#

I guess Scribus? There's also LaTeX and Typst which are more like markup

#

There's always Valk's word/gdoc template too

sweet gale
#

I'm pretty sure I've got that already, so I guess that solves that!

onyx fractal
crystal wigeon
#

Cool blog BTW. Mirrors a lot of my own thoughts on the expected scale and content of a Lancer session struggling with the confines of a 1-shot, especially with new players. My table frequently took an hour per combat round when starting so if you include any non-trivial combat that's more than the whole session time lol.

#

Tools to speed up turns as well as your idea of prebuilt characters might alleviate this somewhat

onyx fractal
#

Indeed. Advice on pacing would probably be warranted

crystal wigeon
#

GM side especially, since that'd speed up half the turns or more

idle cedar
#

sample turns for NPCs is great for new GMs

#

same with PCs really

unborn bridge
#

Hm, a LL12 oneshot would be funny. Let's go full out babyyyy

idle cedar
#

lmao

onyx fractal
idle cedar
#

man

#

I might pay for retrograde again

#

actually I bought stuff already

#

I should just learn to do fancier stuff on gimp

onyx fractal
#

That's from one of the community packs

idle cedar
#

I can only do basics rn

#

oh TRUE

onyx fractal
#

I wouldn't use it in a real publication

#

Because it's community

#

I would either use a vanilla retrograde export or commission custom tokens

idle cedar
#

oh are those licensed

onyx fractal
#

I dont know but since they are community-contributed I wouldn't want to make money off them without the author's permission

idle cedar
#

yeah fair

onyx fractal
#

Which is to say, I don't consider the chop shop to fall under retrograde's "yeah sure go for it" license

#

i just grabbed them as placeholders because I had the idea and wanted to see if I could do it in typst

idle cedar
#

yeah that makes sense

#

thought on alternating which side the picture is in

onyx fractal
#

reading my fucken mind

idle cedar
#

LOL

onyx fractal
#

solid case for justified text

#

FUCK i misspelled charge

idle cedar
#

oh yeah justified text looks really nice

#

I've noticed some really bad justified text before so I avoided it a lot

#

but I might try it in the future

onyx fractal
#

I wonder how accessible that NPC format is

#

e.g. Template Class (Optional 1, Optional 2)

#

Will a new GM recognize that and understand what that means

unborn bridge
#

You could mention about the format if you think the idea won't deliver

left mirage
onyx fractal
#

Really, the more complicated part is how I modify these based on player count

#

e.g. suppose I want to add the Veteran template to Kunai for 4 players and an extra optional to Cleaver with 5 players

#

etc

#

those are the problems we solve here in layout land!

#

information conveyance

#

We cookin

idle cedar
#

it would be nice to be able to put the statblock directly in here but

#

hmm I wonder what the best alternative here would be

#

fillable worksheet

onyx fractal
idle cedar
#

yaa

#

I'm just thinking about it more now

onyx fractal
#

fucking veteran template

unborn bridge
# onyx fractal fucking veteran template

You could do a format similar to this

3 Players
Corvo

Ace
Kunai
Priest
Cleaver
Bastion

5 Players

  • Veteran Template (Priest)
  • Deathcounter (Bastion)

Not the best but I hope it gets the idea across?

idle cedar
#

i think the standard formatting is pretty good yeah

#

or maybe list the entire opfor for each player count maybe

spare jolt
#

Does retrograde allow people to use stuff designed with it for modules?

idle cedar
#

yes

idle cedar
spare jolt
#

Oh, cool. I can't art, so that will be nice.

onyx fractal
left mirage
steel fog
left mirage
# steel fog What are scope buckets?

whoops there was supposed to be a slash in there
scope is your deliverables, things you are specifically trying to accomplish with the project and a kind of "good enough" benchmark

buckets are for organizing modular/atomized content according to relevance

#

You can think of dungeon encounter tables, outdoor encounter tables, and city encounter tables as being different buckets

#

alternatively you can imagine encounters relevant to a specific room, a more broad location, a story arc/thread, or even something as general as the story itself as being different buckets

left mirage
#

Had a great conversation with my first teammate so far

reminder folks, your best shot at releasing a complete work of art is working together!

onyx fractal
#

Just completed laying out an existing lancer module as a trifold pamphlet as a learning exercise for Typst, went pretty well

night rivet
#

What's Typst?

onyx fractal
#

It's a markup language that's like if Markdown and LaTeX had a baby

south fern
#

that sounds.. pretty good, damn. gonna have to check it out. does it have a reasonable package manager?

onyx fractal
#

I haven't needed to use a third party plugin for it yet so I don't know

night rivet
#

Markup language?

humble dome
#

I'm new to Lancer (currently playing as a PC), and have yet to GM anything, but this has the gears in my brain turning, so I might submit something 👀

onyx fractal
onyx fractal
#

Style question: when referencing something in the Lancer book (e.g. page number for a rule), which format is correct:

  • Lancer, p. 69
  • Lancer Core Rulebook, p. 69
#

Or something else

honest pawn
#

Or, do the latter once, then do the former

onyx fractal
#

I think I'm worried that someone will pick up the Lancer free rules and assume it's sufficient

#

I don't know if saying "Lancer Core Rules" fixes that though

honest pawn
#

The free rulebook has the benefit of having the same page count up to the GM section, too, so if someone realizes “my book doesn’t go that high” they might realize they have the wrong book open. Mentioning it upfront will clear the air on the matter though

onyx fractal
#

It's an awkward place because that means every module needs to state that up front since any module could be a GMs first module

fierce sedge
onyx fractal
#

Ah that's a good reference

#

Also "Lancer Core Rulebook"

fierce sedge
#

But yeah there's also a limit to what you can do in terms of instructions.

honest pawn
onyx fractal
honest pawn
#

Example from wallflower:

#

They do the same for Sitreps, which are notably in the GM-only section of the core book

#

Plus, lower word count good for layout

onyx fractal
#

Indeed

onyx fractal
honest pawn
#

You do you; I don’t think you need do that and am unsure of the clarity it gives but maybe it’ll help 🤷

onyx fractal
#

Just brainstorming

honest pawn
#

I think this is a good example to set for folks: oneshot makers don’t need to be beholden to the “lancer standard template” and can, in fact, make something that can fit on a page or two

hollow turtle
#

We need more weirdly formatted stuff

honest pawn
#

this legitimately gives me hope in making my own pamphlet for the jam (or whatever I make alongside the jam lol)

#

@onyx fractal what font choices did you use?

onyx fractal
#

Barlow for body text, Barlow Condensed for subheaders, and Orbitron for the main title

hollow turtle
#

Orbitron my beloved

onyx fractal
#

Spent quite a while looking at font options. I think I'm settled on Barlow for body text but the rest are up for grabs. I think my H1 font will ultimately depend on what the module's theme is

#

Jost, Fira Sans, Noto Sans, Roboto, Inter, PT Sans, and Strait were all options I looked at

#

I like Barlow because it sort of gestures at DIN fonts without being full DIN

#

And in general I think I like sans serif for sci-fi stuff

#

Serif isn't out of the question I guess

onyx fractal
#

Put together some thoughts on my experience so far using Typst for TTRPG layout https://gordianblade.com/first-impressions-of-typst-a-promising-new-layout-tool/

Gordian Blade

In my ongoing "design diary" of sorts for the Lancer One-Shot Jam coming up next month, I took a few days to explore the possibilities of laying out a TTRPG module using Typst, a relatively new markup language and tool for laying out print media. I only became aware of

honest pawn
#

Hell yeah, good to know there’s free layout options out there like this

#

Good to see this stuff documented

onyx fractal
#

It's surprisingly powerful

honest pawn
#

The GitHub aspect is honestly very tempting

onyx fractal
#

Just not intuitive for most people

honest pawn
#

Like at the moment I have like, files for each minor version update on a lot of my stuff

onyx fractal
#

project_v2_final_final_FINAL.pdf

honest pawn
#

I have a much better naming convention for my stuff but yes it’s very real

south fern
#

using SemVer for your text files

honest pawn
#

You joke but that’s literally what I’m doing

idle cedar
#

that's for version 0.1.0 and stuff right

honest pawn
#

Yes

idle cedar
#

isn't that a fairly common practice

#

i guess it isn't

south fern
#

not for human-readable documents

idle cedar
#

like the lancer pdf has a version system like that right

south fern
#

oh yea true. maybe it's more common than i think

#

let me rephrase: It's not common enough that it stops people from doing project_v2_final_Final.pdf

idle cedar
honest pawn
#

LCPs use semver

#

I use it because it keeps my head on straight

south fern
#

there's also Calendar versioning, which probably suits text documents more, unless you're actually tracking major, minor and patch within your doc

honest pawn
#

I recently started tracking semver in my docs yeah

#

Calendar can work but it’s more numbers lol

#

I guess “October 2024 release” works

#

Or “2024-10-22 version”

south fern
#

submitting RFC's for my english essay

idle cedar
#

I'm going back to college soon and i might start using git to version control my essays

#

but unironically

honest pawn
#

I like the Semver because I don’t need to worry about dates overlapping tbh

south fern
#

no yea absolutely do it. it's the fucking best

#

that's also why i like markdown so much

honest pawn
#

“Oops I need to patch this. New patch version release”

idle cedar
#

the only bad thing is that professors tend to only accept docx files

#

i don't think sending a essay.md will go well lol

south fern
#

that might be where you export to pdf using Typst XD

#

I'm thinking about doing the oneshot as like, the second to last combat of the mission in terms of fictional positioning
earlier combats have goes wrong somehow, and now you've regrouped and you have limited resources

mainly, the idea is to let the players try out the repair mechanics

honest pawn
#

Makes sense!

idle cedar
#

maybe like:

  1. set up situation -- the party has been separated, and need to regroup. some narrative checks to get them back together
  2. get together, do basic maintenance and other character interactions
  3. combat (with a weapon, system, and/or structure/stress down)
#

of course it depends on the theme but i feel like this is general enough to work with anything

honest pawn
#

Hm also, maybe consider starting structure and stress at 2, with 1 mount destroyed and X SP in systems destroyed

#

Them repairing from there

idle cedar
#

I'm thinking about doing premade sheet with damages

#

if they have high armor, they'd have less structure damage. if they're an everest variant, they might have more structure damage (bc it can be repaired more cheaply)

#

maybe even combine the character traits into what kind of damage they took

#

that would be really fun to work on

#

nucav sherman pilot taking like half hp as damage with no structure damage but also they took 2 stress

#

maybe even 3, I'll have to fidget around with it

(Unofficial) Theme Candidates

based on theme suggestions, compiled, with some blurb for your inspirations

  • Secrets: Secret superweapon? A noble's shameful secret? Trade secrets of a corpro state? Secret police? Do the pilots carry a secret? Vaults or labyrinths that hold long lost secrets? Will you uncover secrets, or protect them?
  • Crime: petty theft, grand theft mech, murder, fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy, or pillar violation? Did you choose a life of crime, or maybe your existence made a crime? Or are you perhaps here to stop a crime?
  • Revolution: radical change in world order, or revolution around the local star? What has brought about this change, and how are people reacting? What side are your characters on, and what are their fates?
  • Leviathan: interstellar superpowers, local tyrants, or perhaps gentle giants who roam the stars? What happens when two leviathans clash? What happens when one falls? What can the little ones do in the presence of these leviathans?
  • Two Worlds: two different worlds, how do they interact? Are they in conflict? Are the members in conflict? What stands between the two worlds? Perhaps a new (or "new") world is discovered, and people are ready to colonize it? Is the conflict inevitable?
  • Train: a train murder mystery, or mercenaries tasked with protecting cargo? Perhaps new recruits being trained, or fresh out of raining? Does everything go as planned, or does something go wrong?
  • Reclamation: something was ravaged, but now is being reclaimed. What was destroyed, and what remains? Who are the reclaimers? Nature? Survivors? Opportunists? What is being reclaimed? A planet, assets, resources, or maybe a word?
  • Power: there are many kinds of power. Political, electrical, or even brute force. What kind of power takes center stage here? Who wields the power, and who challenges them?
#

i haven't gone through all of them yet, but these should cover almost all the submissions

There are.... 54 themes and I've condensed it down to 8
There's a couple cool themes like Elderly or Scarcity or Colony Ship that i also want to include, but I wanna wait a little first to see if I can group it with something else
the final poll will probably be 10 options

10 sounds like a good number of themes to choose from

I'm thinking of doing a double combat one shot module, just a short narrative followed by two back to back combats. Figuring out what those are though is my struggle. First though is maybe a Gauntlet into a Holdout, or something else, or a Scout into a Holdout.

idle cedar

Fitting two combats is probably pretty tough for a oneshot! Would love to see how you figure out that solution.

I'm thinking about providing pre built character sheets

and want to aim for LL3

pastel thunder

we feel most of the builds happen before the session occurs

normally youre like

and people build a build for it yk

#

pre built character sheets cant hurt tho

idle cedar
#

yeah that's common but i wanted to make it a bit more beginner friendly and also like, have a cohesive unit of characters

#

like how they all know each other and have relationships and stuff, using character flags

#

hmm i can't find any doc on what flags are

pastel thunder
#

ehhhhhh
we're hesitant to mention scope creep but wish to anyway; most one shots are one shots, and traditionally have a combat focus- making something like that feel extra to someone just making a combat one shot for the sake of making a oneshot they like yk

#

if you wanna make it for yours, thats epic, but we would like that clarification since having it be universal puts us off from it yk

idle cedar
#

but basically they're a way to signal to other players like "hey this is something my character cares about, engage with me along these lines" which makes it a bit easier to work with than bond, which is better for long term play

pastel thunder
#

and thats just not fun for us

idle cedar
#

flags are a bit shallow for long term, though it's a good step off point

I do wanna have like, 30-40% of the session be narrative ideally

50/50 is probably hard to reach

we'd like to ask again if this is for your goals or something you expect for the entire jam

we think if you can make a one shot with 40% narrative+pull ins/connections to each member with premade character sheets

#

thats going to be FUCKING AWESOME

#

(genuine^^)

idle cedar
#

planned structure is:

  • you're already in the middle of a mission
  • you've all taken some serious damage, and are scattered
  • You need to regroup first, then do some repairs
  • combat
  • hopefully some narrative to tie it off
pastel thunder

pastel thunder

idle cedar
#

it's a pretty generic premise, like what's being stolen and why is all details that can change

tepid pecan
#

oh i missed out a lot on stuff, but i think that part of rthe reason i thoguht of ll0 was to generally avoid core bonuses entirely which might skew how the game can or does actually operate, or serve to just, curate players towards those specific core bonuses.

#

Auto-stabs and op cal in particular being the two biggest ones i think i'd avoid for core bonuses at all because of their status as the "just deal more damage permanently" and "ignore inaccurate" core bonuses respectively

idle cedar
#

I might be using Dread chargen questionnaire but with some multiple choice options to build your mech.
Like on your goblin, you have an autopod, but what else do you have? And this should be toward the end, where you have a pretty good idea of who your character is already, so your builds would reflect who you are as a character. Or at least that's the idea.
Could be scope creep though, will need to actually write a design doc when the day comes

just a little bit of customization on your prebuilt sheet

# onyx fractal Put together some thoughts on my experience so far using Typst for TTRPG layout ...

I really like what you did with the Corvette Job, but also I think it shows how much could potentially be done adapting Lancer for pamphlet play.

My main observations are:

  1. The map is way too big in spaces but too small in actual size; the individual squares are too small to be usable when printed. I think for oneshot play small maps are going to be essential anyway, and might make it possible to fit a map into the pamphlet.

But also, I'm not sure if you should put the map in the pamphlet. Its interesting as an exercise but I'm not sure there's actual value in doing that over just having another sheet for map stuff.

  1. There's a lot more room to cram value into these, especially if you drop the map to another page. There's also stuff that is neat but I'd probably drop for other things, like the rollable table for what's in the Corvette feels excessive.

  2. The structure doesn't actually mimic Lancer's by the book structure (briefing -> preparation -> reserves -> boots on the ground). Not saying it should necessarily, but that might be an important context, especially for new GMs.

onyx fractal
# neon hearth I really like what you did with the Corvette Job, but also I think it shows how ...

Thanks! I think there's a ton of opportunity for people to conceive of Lancer modules differently than they currently do, so I'm happy to help open people's minds to the possibilities!

Re: the map, I have a few thoughts:

  • I took the map from the module directly since this was more an exercise in layout, not editing. I didn't really pay any attention to the map grid size itself in terms of dimensions or scale. I agree that a one-shot map would probably benefit from being on the small side though!

  • In terms of the map's physical size, I don't actually expect that people would want to print the scaled-up version of the map from the pamphlet. If I were to publish my own trifold, I would probably ship a hi-res digital version of the map for printing or VTT use in a zip with the PDF.

  • That said, I think I still like including the map (or perhaps a rough sketch of the map, e.g. a map wireframe) in the pamphlet text because, philosophically, I like the idea that all someone needs to run the adventure IRL is the pamphlet itself, and they can sketch the map on a wet-erase mat from the reference. For digital play, people can use the hi-res VTT version instead, because they are already living in a digital world. A sketch version of the map might be able to fit into a single column, and instead, more space could be devoted to an area map or point crawl or something.

I agree there is also more room to cram more stuff into the pamphlet, though I'm also wary of filling every last corner of whitespace. Sometimes less is more! All depends on what you want to do.

As for the structure, I don't really think that structure is terribly meaningful for new GMs. And in a one-shot, IMO using pregens is a great idea, which means preparation and reserves are almost completely skipped. In a one-shot, I'm a big fan of starting as close to the action as I can get, so IMO starting with boots on the ground with a very quick briefing is all you really need.

#

I think in general that, while you can print a pamphlet that's 6 columns of justified block text, I don't think that's good information design

#

I like pictures and diagrams 😭

#

It could be argued that a better use of that space might be a map of Engiri City and the trade route the corvette was flying on, and a few different points the PCs can go to during their investigation

#

But that gets into adventure design, which I wasn't doing for this project :P

neon hearth
#

Yeah I was thinking smaller, less detailed "concept" maps are probably what should be in the actual pamphlet.

Pictures and diagrams are great its just how to make that usable for the GM in limited space.

The question I am considering is whether or not I want to see what can be done to mix narrative into pamphlet module form or focus on core Lancer combat experience in mini-module form

onyx fractal
#

Yeah that's the interesting question IMO

#

It's easy to make a one-page lancer combat. Real easy

#

But that turns a Lancer one-shot into a tabletop minis wargame

#

I can't wait to see how people expand Lancer narratives in short form. The one-shot form factor really puts a lot of pressure on module authors to deprioritize combats, which I love to see

buoyant snow

maybe they could "Find them" in the mission? Like...lets say they are raiding an armory full of weird weapons or confiscated contraband. and then in the next scene they can equip them. It would be kinda hard to do in compcon, but idk

neon hearth
#

if they find the gear in an emplaced position, maybe they just go to a point and use a quick action, and presto they get the benefit

#

maybe even a stronger version or something?

#

depends on what you're trying to do

onyx fractal

onyx fractal

I've been thinking of offering an exotic as a reward for mission completion but it's good to think of getting them during the mission

neon hearth

I can already see other ways I might like to do the template or ways it doesn't feel like it works - I think the opfor section is a little redundant / needs different info to be useful / that info would be better on an images handout?

onyx fractal
neon hearth

idle cedar

I'm thinking about prebuilt characters so i could just have someone start with an exotic

crystal wigeon
#

True, though if this is for new players having a starter character with kit that isn't actually in the base game could be confusing if they choose to continue

onyx fractal
#

counterpoint: new players don't know what is and isn't part of the base game

#

Which is to say, if they just focus on their character sheet, that's all they have to worry about

fierce sedge
onyx fractal
#

Fair

#

I think I just don't worry that much about exotics in one-shots. I say just give them to players as part of the pregen or print it on a card or something and hand it out to the players to choose who gets it (making it clear this is a special thing)

idle cedar
onyx fractal
#

Start as close as possible to the action. See if you can minimize the amount of time between "start of session" and "players make their first meaningful decision" to, like, 60 seconds

idle cedar
#

i did think about giving characters something that's not normally available, just to give them some cool stuff
i was initially thinking of character traits, like each pilot gets some special passive or active
but exotic is probably a more reasonable way to do this

#

what if... exotic that makes your actions simpler
like giving access to a full action that's a bit better than two standard quick actions

onyx fractal
#

I feel like that starts to dip into counterproductive land

#

like, accidentally teaching players the wrong rules

idle cedar
#

something like:

Careful Attack
Full Action
Skirmish. You gain +2 Accuracy against one on your targets.
idle cedar
onyx fractal
#

What is the design goal of this exotic?

idle cedar
#

signpost their go-to turns

#

but yeah there's def better ways to do this

honest pawn
#

So to note: One Shot != New Player adventure, to be clear. It could be easier for a oneshot to be fire and forget for newbies, sure, but I think it’s important to keep in mind that the audience does NOT have to be new players

#

If someone is targeting a new player one shot, great, carry on, continue, just don’t treat it as the prescription for everyone else

idle cedar
#

yaa there's definitely a need for "ok i just finished this module, what do I do now" kind of module

#

is "recommended for new players" tag on a sheet an effective way to guide people in that direction

honest pawn
#

Yeah, I think so

idle cedar
#

idk if people really listen to that or just take it as a challenge

honest pawn
#

Can’t stop players from playing the way they wanna

idle cedar
#

i usually take it as a challenge, it's my toxic gamer trait

#

jk about it being a toxic gamer thing

#

but i do sometimes see cool stuff and want to try it out, despite the designers telling me no

onyx fractal
#

I can't help but think about new players as a primary audience for a one-shot, but I think it's worthwhile considering how experienced players and GM might adapt the content

#

And writing in a way that makes that easy

#

i.e. don't hard-code "newbie-friendly" into the module

idle cedar
#

i could make the premade sheets more optional
make the place a bit less tied to specific PCs

#

that is probably wise

fierce sedge
fierce sedge
#

That ya don't need to design it as someone's first foray into the system; just be clear about what it is :).

neon hearth
#

Also, there's a difference between designing the GM's first foray into the game and designing something for a reasonably experienced GM to pick up and get some use out of with less experienced players.

The former is just inevitably going to be pretty wordy simply because you need to spell out more things or explain your decision making in a way a more experienced GM just wouldn't need.

neon hearth
# onyx fractal Thoughts on balancing combat for one shots https://gordianblade.com/balancing-la...

Got a chance to read this, seems good overall, but I'd like to throw in another option (and what I've been thinking about doing for my own little module): focus on stressing players in other ways than their resources.

I'd do this by adding bonus objectives, or combining multiple sitrep objectives or conditions into a single scene (for example: need to extract with a payload, but need to hit a button to release its clamps first). You can also just make the timeline more aggressive; instead of 6 rounds, can you do it in 5? That pressures player action economy even with a more normal number of NPCs, and make those NPCs more impactful because PCs might not have time to focus on deleting them, and because their interference with PCs attempts to solve objectives becomes the focus of the problem rather than just needing to reduce the number of enemy activations by any means necessary.

onyx fractal
#

Time pressure is a good idea! I like that a lot

neon hearth
#

The only other thing I'd add is that the Everest is kind of a special case for core powers, and especially for oneshots I'd consider using something like Valkyrion's modified Everest core (just because how insanely powerful the standard Everest core is)

Fortunately I think including narrative resource expenditure doesn't increase teach time or complexity a great deal

One thing I will say is that, I am not sure that "fit it all in one session" is easier than having multiple sessions for a single mission.

idle cedar
#

I think you're probably right
I feel like it's too late to change it, but if this goes well, I do wanna host another one but this time with an entire mission

neon hearth
#

If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter and all that

tepid pecan
#

i personally think its easier to do 1 session but im viewing it from a "cut unneccessary weight" viewpoint

idle cedar
#

yeah but in a letter, you don't have to make battlemaps and do nice templating which also takes work

#

which, you know, isn't required but

#

I feel like that's what people are doing

tepid pecan

in a letter?

fierce sedge
idle cedar

just trying to say letter writing and module writing are different genres of writing with different considerations

November 3, 1920.
My dearest Clarissa,
The trenches are cold as usual. I lost another one of my friends to the Spanish Flu. Perhaps it is blasphemous of me to say this, but what God would allow this to happen? Perhaps I am dead and I am in hell.
Anyway, attached is the battlemap for the next month's game. I hope the standees find you well. They should serve well as tokens.

With love,
John Smith
-# I will not be taking any feedback with regards to ahistoricity of this made up letter, thank you

honest pawn
#

I’m gonna reiterate the utility of treating a oneshot like a single “job” in a larger session, in that “writing a shorter letter taking more time” is more relevant when you start with a longer letter

#

Basically, IMO, stop trying to target a Mission’s worth of content in a One Shot

idle cedar
#

I think there's definitely something to consider about trying to make a shorter form content than normal lancer experience
but also like, considering the amount of content needed for a normal lancer experience, I'm not really convinced that making a oneshot content is necessarily more difficult than making a full mission, overall

honest pawn
#

I agree

idle cedar
#

I don't wanna minimize the thought that goes into trying to fit stuff into a oneshot, bc you'll have to cut something out and that takes careful thought
but also like, once you cut it, you don't need to work on it

#

it both adds and substracts the total amount of work you'd be doing

honest pawn
honest pawn
#

But legitimately though, if you wanna write a full mission, write a full mission and screw the jam

neon hearth
#

to be less glib tho: its less about trying to stuff a missions worth of Content, and more about trying to stuff a complete arc into a session (setup, payoff, etc)

which means trying to make all the pieces do double and triple duty in context without becoming too unwieldy

idle cedar
#

I feel like this is similar to like, adapting a series into a movie

#

you do have to compress some stuff, only include the important bits, and sometimes even cutting some important stuff to shift focus etc

#

I think the pregens will do a lot of heavy lifting here for me

tepid pecan
#

yeah

#

we have a lot fo experience in "true" oneshots

#

and imo the big deal is A) setting expectation ahead of time
B) pregeneration and significant curation
C) dont try to stuff a "full arc" into something. you don't see people trying to stuff a movie or series into an episode, after all

#

as an example, we did a oneshot where we told players ahead of time "yeah this is who you are as pilots you are at this time because its your job and you have 3 difference 1 sentene choices for why you've already agreed to do this"

#

"this is why you care about this thing"

#

we design the narrative challenges to be "efficient" we make sure that we don't do/run into character interact loops, keep everyone time conscious,

#

throw the battle in, then narrate the conclusion

#

and we make whatever the oneshot is supposed to be "exciting"

onyx fractal
#

How long do your one-shots go for?

neon hearth
#

You don't try to stuff a movie into an episode, but you try to stuff an episode into an episode - something where whatever the main dramatic question posed by the focus isn't left unresolved by the end (even if there are larger questions remaining).

tepid pecan
tepid pecan
onyx fractal
#

Oh wow, I'm targeting 3-4 hours

#

Yeah it's a tough nut to crack

#

Thing is, I think it's a worthwhile nut to crack

#

And the difficulty in cracking it is probably why it hasn't been attempted much

#

At this point, I'm just interested to see how people attempt to crack it

#

I don't think there's an objectively correct way to do it, which is the fun part

neon hearth
#

I mean even documentary storytelling builds itself around like
arcs, questions, tensions

onyx fractal
#

Ultimately it sort of comes down to how much detail you want to go into with a given arc

#

I can run a whole ass mission in a single die roll if I don't care too much about the nitty gritty details :P

#

It's all about the game structure babyyy

potent axle
#

I'm hoping to take a crack at something that can be in that shorter 3-4hr window. The pot has been simmering away in my mind for a couple of weeks now.
One of the things motivating me is the apparent lack of new player focused introductory one shots. I wonder how many groups have played the Corvette Job for this reason (ours did and it was fun). I think it would be great if there were a handful more one shots out there to help with bringing new players in.

#

I feel intended session length is an important factor there, and writing for a 6 hour session is probably going to translate to a two-shot for plenty of groups and I don't think that's super conducive to an introductory game.

idle cedar
#

i hope that i can finish up first draft in the first few days and playtest a few sessions as i make changes

neon hearth
onyx fractal
#

I'm really curious to hear how people actually run the investigation/jungle sections, since I feel like it's missing a lot of meat

neon hearth
#

yeah that's kind of my question

idle cedar
#

i think i made up a town where players can interact and ask questions to locals about anything weird they saw

onyx fractal
#

Right now I'm leaning toward potentially a node-based scenario, or a very small location crawl

idle cedar
#

maybe I'll run a pickup game of HA Corvette job and try to stick as closely as possible to the writing

onyx fractal
#

It entirely depends on the theme though

idle cedar
#

you can probably do a crawl with any theme

onyx fractal
#

right, but I have an idea I'm toying with and I don't know how much work it will end up being to contort that idea to match the theme lol

idle cedar
#

that's fair

neon hearth
#

a question I am thinking about for a oneshot is how to sandwich things

I think you do narrative-combat-narrative or combat-narrative-combat
and what I want to test is more the latter

idle cedar
#

two combats, or narrative break in the middle of combat?

neon hearth
#

yes

potent axle
#

HA Corvette was very abridged for us, we didn't really play it as intended. I included it as part of a session 0 so we didn't have a full session to focus on it.
The investigation I compressed a lot, basically taking some sort of skill check from each player to proceed to show how narrative worked and then cutting to boots on the ground.
The combat we did not play to completion, probably a few rounds.
The whole point was to test a couple of things out and confirm the players would be interested in persisting with the system (thankfully they were), but I know that it was a clumsy exercise and probably would have been more interesting to spend a proper session playing. That's what's motivating me to write something concise but with a bit more meat on the bones than the Corvette Job.

hollow turtle
#

Oh also, to contribute some data to the pile:

Ran my LL12 one shot again, this time with a small narrative clock they had to fill to try and convince/give advice to a committee.

It took a good... half an hour/45ish minutes? And I ended it a segment early to kind of mechanically show the idea of being suddenly interrupted in a jarring manner.

Thus tiny narrative scene didn't have too much impact on the following combats. Most of the players seemed to have a good idea of their builds and how it all worked. The biggest time sink was the toss in replacement for one of our players that needed to leave.

#

That one shot is definitely on the longer side, but given the nature of it being a LL12 one shot, its definitely aimed at veterans who can understand the foibles of high rank. Toss a bunch of noobs at that scenario and it would definitely gear grind

idle cedar
hollow turtle
#

The closer we get to Jammin Time the more I feel set on making tbat fabled LL12 one shot for whatever theme wins

#

High level Lancer NPC balance is whack and strange and high level Lancers are stranger

idle cedar
#

what's at stake for this LL12 build?

#

wait sorry idk what I'm saying lol

hollow turtle
#

Its so much fun to build stuff for high level

#

(Least for me)

idle cedar
#

do you do anything grandiose for ll12, narratively

#

or is it like, just another fight

hollow turtle
#

For the one shot I've done? No. The narrative was simple and kinda low stakes

#

And depending on the winning theme, I kinda wanna keep it that way

#

Give the players a chance to kinda settle into the characters they made before I toss these God Mechs at Whacky NPCs

#

I think the most difficult part, on a kinda meta level with a LL12 one shot is its there as a power flex and not much else

#

You can’t really have a whole campaign with those characters once your done

#

Might, depending on time and energy, put some jump off points/hooks at the end of the oneshot, so theres some suggestions on how to utilize the oneshot characters/set up further

jolly hornet
#

For some people, that's the ideal oneshot; a short closed loop story, no loose ends.

hollow turtle
#

Yep! If ya want to end it there

#

It ends

#

If you wanna drag some hooks out, well, here are a few!

onyx fractal
#

Might be heresy but I think there's a reasonable argument in favor of making one shot combat a deathmatch

neon hearth
#

I think you do that to make it short, and also you probably have a cutoff where the enemy scrams once its clearly over

fierce sedge
#

So I'm not sure it changes much other than for example needing another way to encourage strategies other than camping/deathball, or to embrace those if that's what one wants.

grim yarrow
#

This is sometimes enough for me to complete shorter missions (e.g. Wallflower mission 1).

#

In any case, this probably makes me imagine ONE SHOT to have more content than most people do.

For example, the structure of the opening + a ‘warm-up’ fight + a narrative + a ‘serious’ fight + a conclusion is enough to fit into the ONE SHOT frame for me

onyx fractal
#

Ah yeah that's more than I typically think of

grim yarrow
#

My estimate is that play in person is about 1.5 to 2 times faster than play on line.
I'm curious if anyone has similar experience to confirm (or deny) this estimate

onyx fractal
#

I have yet to play in person, I am curious to observe that though as I plan to do at least 50% of my testing in person

neon hearth
#

the project I'm working on now - kind of my 'warm up' for the game jam - I intend to be playable as two combat scenes over like 5-6 hours, but with a natural break point you can work to if you only have 3-4 hours.

#

#

Within a Oneshot I don't believe it's feasible to look at it as a pointcrawl where you travel through the same few points multiple times.

#

You just do not have the hours needed to feasibly revisit points if you also want to run a combat.

#

As such I instead took the approach of having a goal with multiple valid paths, along the lines of a classic onion structure of converging lines.

#

Each path has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the gang could have tried to get several bonuses if they wanted to risk it (the mission had a 3h IRL time limit, so any time spent doing extra stuff meant they had that much less time to try to achieve their objective. Worked flawlessly tbh.)

sweet gale
neon hearth
#

one of the other things that might be worth trying is a literal dungeon crawl
like, not a point crawl in a dungeon just an actual big map + some way of transitioning more smoothly in and out of combat time

honest pawn
#

Very similar to Orange’s

fierce sedge
#

Yeah, I think another aspect of it that's important is that your decisions should preferably have a tangible, downstream effect.

neon hearth
fierce sedge
#

In my case I did the following.

  • If you want out the hangar bays in W2, no reinforcements can come from the west.
  • If you take out the bays E2, no reinforcements from the east.
  • If you take out the command centre in N1, all enemies begin their first turn of combat impaired.
  • If you take out W1 and E1, the station starts crashing towards the surface and will be unable to escape (but will still be able to fire its primary weapon should you fail to stop it).

And then C1 was the primary target, with S1 being the connecting path to it.

#

I do still have to flesh out the dungeon crawl I was working on to try things out with, but that one is moreso for a longer mission than a Oneshot.

idle cedar
#

Jam plans:
Phase 1 - first draft of narrative, first draft for characters (6 characters, targeted for 3-4 players?)
Phase 2 - build combat, integrate into narrative
Phase 3 - playtest and adjustment to narrative, characters, and combat
Phase 4 - editing and styling, maybe some more playtest
-# almost forgot: Phase 0 - come up with cool names for phases so I can feel cool when I move on to next phases

upper loom
#

does the jam require we have premade characters?

onyx fractal

Nope! But it's one option that some people are looking into including in their submission because it can help save time at the table

upper loom
#

i see i see

idle cedar
#

it's just something I wanna do ya

upper loom
#

epically

onyx fractal
#

Personally I'm considering publishing pregens separately from my One-shot submission

neon hearth
#

"building your mech" is in my mind such a pillar of Lancer that like
premades almost defeat the purpose
maybe for a purely teaching game, but even for a oneshot
the tools for sharing characters are sufficiently robust that I'd just say "gimme an LL3 character that fits <2 sentence concept summary>"

#

That said if you do include premades, that's a good way to provide character specific hooks, so...could be good!

idle cedar
#

something I'm considering (but might cut) is simplified mech building, using Dread-style questionnaire

#

so like you'd have most of the build put together, and you'd choose from couple different options based on how you answer

#

not fully freeform, but there's still some choice in there

#

it does eat up session time though, and I'm not sure how much time it will take. Hopefully aiming for no more than 15-20 minute

neon hearth
#

simply have them make their characters before the session bigthink

idle cedar
#

no that is something I specifically want to avoid

#

0 prep required, everything you need is in the book

#

but I know diff people have diff goals

neon hearth
#

I did run a Root game recently with premades that worked out well
because everyone was in an overlapping web of relationships

#

I think if I set something at the Kavalier College I'd do premades

#

or otherwise some kind of more narrative heavy setup

idle cedar
#

yaa that is a strong advantage of premades
if I go through with dread style questionnaire, relationship is going to be in there, like asking about some shared secrets etc

neon hearth
#

the catch is Lancer in one shot form just doesn't have time for much narrative stuff anyway

idle cedar
#

yeah

#

no matter what, you have to cut something

upper loom
#

is there winning the jam?

idle cedar

Lancer, from what I've experienced, doesn't have much of an official/unoffical label bias like certain other dragon-related games. Except maybe in terms of mech homebrew allowance but even then, there's a lot of high quality stuff out there so it doesn't have as much of the stigma. So all adopting as "official" post fact (something that hasn't happened before) would do is get some publicity from the announcement

fierce sedge
hollow turtle
#

Yeah I'm not big on this (or any further Lancer jam) having a winner. It would not foster the atmosphere of community

And perhaps it would drive away those newer creators who've never published before (ie, me)

tepid pecan

i think it would just kind of turn into "who already had artists to advertise the work" thing which is already kind of an "issue" in regards to popularity all its own

fierce sedge

Yeah, like, to be clear some of the folk in this have an established network, have published modules and other books before, and are in general good at what they do.

And I suspect that if we'd introduce a competitive angle, well chances are that it'd just draw more attention to them, rather than have this be an opportunity to encourage folk generally, which I suspect they wouldn't want either.
