im going to guess its probably whether or not you're hitting the perfect deflect window
deflecting hardtear doesnt generally buff guard boost or the damage negation dealt (or even guard counters) i think. it only actually buffs the spontaneous guard
so if you miss the window you're probably eating the normal guard boost of your weapon which isnt as good
(i dont think there's a sound cue for a perfect one vs a normal?)

maybe I'll try my ng+ buffless, i never really buffed in ds3 until recently (just picked up the golden vow equivalent), but i feel like I've grown used to it in ER
but i mostly just use golden vow so it shouldn't be too different as long as I'm not getting smacked too much

Red & Blue graveyard + Death/Gravebirds, ||Romina and her rotpests||, and the Bloodfiends (who even gave the Outer God talisman)
and Abyssal Woods, if that counts
makes me think if you want to argue Outer Gods beyond those ||(that are relevant)||, it'd be good to look for things that show up both places - ||Something related to the serpent, maybe?||

in my experience i didn't get enough windows for winged sword, BUT it might actually be worth for block and poke (i wish that rhymed)
