Hurrrgh is this gonna be the day I finally read Kafka’s letter to his father in its entirety?
They had us read Metamorphosis back in high school as a summer reading assignment (and fuck them for that, on that note) but I never actually read the letter beyond what I needed to nab a few quotes and throw em in the paper. But ||the sudden reappearance of Hermann has me wondering what the OG man himself was like through the eyes of Kafka||
For further theory-fodder, if nothing else.
There is already a quote that sticks out about how ||Hermann crippled his son’s sense of safety and security from a young age by demonstrated that he could, at any time, barge into the boy’s room, carry him outside, and force him to sit on that pavlatche alone at night. A fear that das Ungeziefer Kaiser explicitly evokes with his threats of roaches crawling out of mattresses while we sleep. Maybe it’s sleep deprivation making me so touchy feely about a video game character but I hope Gregor will find a place to feel safe once again.||
