But it IS in the book as a rule that you can’t have nipples

hey if you're curious about what was essentially proto SOAR check out Violent Dance

#
You then go back to 0 in that turmoil value, and add +1 for each time you went overboard in that specific value to see where it starts again.
If this causes you to need to go to +4, you permanently stay at +4 in that turmoil, but lose the other value forever, you have made your choice of where you stand in the world.```

Are you interested in line edits for feedback right now or are you more interested in macro level feedback? Because I cleaned up the prose/text on Gunsong with a fine toothed comb a couple times but I didn't wanna do so unwarranted here

obsidian oar
#

what do you mean line edits ?

minor coral
#

Editing/correcting prose/diction/grammar

#

(Apologies for the 15 minute wait, I'm at work)

obsidian oar
#

I think i'll have to wait on that offer

#

I already have someone who offered to do editing

#

and i'd like to wait until this is in a much more final state than it is right now to do it

#

appreciate the offer tho !

minor coral
#

Okay yeah for sure! Just realized I had no idea what kind of feedback you were looking for!

obsidian oar
#

Editing stuff is a bit of a tough one

#

you can tell me if something is better in a different place in your opinion and whatnot

or if something is unclear

I just don't want you to do editing work if that makes sense

Homerun: whenever the Homerunner targets someone with 3 strikes, they trigger all "Out!:" effects of their abilities, and clear all strikes from their target

#

Mmmh

#

Workshopping some unique bosses to try and make the game more varied

#

"When all you have is a bat, every head looks like a baseball"

wicked trench
#

so true!

minor coral
#

Maybe a Pressure Points Guy?

#

Conventional RPG "support abilities" like healing or clearing statuses is very clearly a design space you're deliberately staying away from, but have you considered making that into a boss?

obsidian oar
#

Bosses are meant to be enough on their own

#

An elite might work but we’ll see

minor coral
#

Is it the case that healers and buffers aren't really your jam for this game tho?

obsidian oar
#

Absolutely

#

Feedback i've got told me people wanted somewhat more teamplay moves

#

which i'm looking at

true mulch
#

Being able to work super well with your buddies is cool

obsidian oar
#
A character cannot have more than 3 Strikes.
If a character spends a turn without attacking, they clear all strikes, this is called “Going to the bench”.
Additionally, some of the Homerunner abilities have an “Out!:” effect, these are only triggered when a character is targeted by abilities with said effect.
After an ability that triggered an “Out!:” effect is resolved, the target clears all Strikes.```
#

Homerunner's central trait

#

and yes, clearing the strikes needs to be named

#

as a thing

#

Some stuff will refer to it

#

this is already looking to be much more specific than the Underworld legend

#

We'll see if this different focus will help make it more thematic

#

Underworld Legend was me attempting to work basically 3 distinct phases around the concept of a crescendo bar

#

this is going to be me trying to make a stronger unified mechanic with phases that interact with it differently

true mulch
#

Looking forward to teamwork actions

obsidian oar
#

teamwork actions aren't a given

#

i'm just considering stuff

true mulch
#

I have a consideration

#

Of giving, if not each specific type style then at least each stance, a specific move that can be done as a reaction to being pushed or dragged into an ally. Like I dragged my ally once onto high ground, which was cool

obsidian oar
#

That’s probably not going to be a thing sorry, I’m trying my beat to avoid stuff happening out of turns

obsidian oar
#

To clarify

#

I also had time to consider it for a while after i got some playtest data and my concern i also wanna avoid is people just colliding someone between themselves

true mulch
#

fair fair

minor coral
#

Reactions are probably another thing that may work as a gimmick for one single Boss

obsidian oar
#

There are some "reaction" stuff that i've toyed with

#

and some that are actually in the game

#

but yeah

#

My main goal with how stuff is turning out right now is that i've tried to take everything that causes me some issues in tactical games

#

and see what happens without them

#

so if you ever wondered why there aren't a lot of reactions or stuff that straight up negates actions as reactions, that's why

obsidian oar

obsidian oar
#

Okay i'm cooking with the Homerunner legend

#

i think

#

I'm trying to design this one so the first phase introduces the concept of Strikes

#

the second phase introduces the concept of Baseballs (they're fun little objects)

#

and the third phase uses a mix of phase 1 and 2

obsidian oar
#

here, official post for it

#

Hey also

#

lets see if this works

#

It doesn't

#

okay

#
“When all you have is a bat, every head looks like a baseball”
Slugger: Some homerunner abilities inflict a bespoke status, “Strike”, When a character has no Strikes and is inflicted one, they go to Strike 1, if they take another one then, they go to Strike 2 and so on.
A character cannot have more than 3 Strikes.
If a character spends a turn without attacking, they clear all strikes, this is called “Benching”, and it is the only way to clear Strikes outside of ending the fight.
Additionally, some of the Homerunner abilities have an “Out!:” effect, these are only triggered when a character is targeted by abilities with said effect if they have 3 strikes.
An ability that has an Out!: effect that targets multiple characters only triggers these effects on targets with 3 strikes.
After an ability that triggered an “Out!:” effect is resolved, the target clears all Strikes.

Overture: Hitter
Dynamic Entrance: Bag of baseballs locked tight, cap put on tight, if a little to the side, chewing gum, they’re not taking you seriously.
They swing their bat, aim it at the group of players, and get in a hitter stance.
Harm: 8 x Players
Stress: 6
Defense: 4
Speed: 4
Rusty but still skilled: If the Homerunner causes a Kinetic Transfer or a collide, their target takes damage equal to the amount of Strikes they have, then they take 1 Strike after the ability has resolved.

Bat Swing (Melee, Range 2, Brutal)
Gains Accurate 1 for each Strike the target has.
No Hit:
Target is pushed 1
Weak Hit:
Target takes 2 damage
You move 1
Target is pushed 2
Normal Hit:
Target takes 3 damage
You move 1
Target is pushed 3
Strong Hit:
Target takes 4 damage
You move 2
Target is pushed 4
Critical Hit:
Target takes 6 damage
You move 3
Target is pushed 4

Fastball (Range 4)
Target a foe within range
Target is Pushed 3
Target is Exposed
Out!: Target is Guard Break
Out!: Target takes 3 damage
Target gains 1 strike.

Circular strike (Range 2)
Every foe in range takes 2 damage
Every foe in range is pushed 2
You move 2 (Acrobatic)
Target an adjacent foe
Out!: Target is Dazed and is Dragged 3 by you at the start of their next turn.
Target takes 1 Strike.

Heavenly Curveball (Range 4, Unwieldy)
Target every foe in range
Targets are Dragged 2
Targets are Dazed.
Out!: Targets are Knocked Prone and Exposed
The next attack the Homerunner makes doesn’t have the melee tag and has range 8.```
#
Dynamic Entrance: They are pushed back by a mighty hit, the bubble from their bubble gum pops.
They spin their bat a bit with one hand, open their baseball bag, and grab a fistfull of baseballs.
They get ready for you, this isn’t a joke to them anymore.
Harm: 7 x Players
Stress: 6
Defense: 6
Speed: 3
Getting into it: Certain abilities can create Baseballs, Baseballs are Brittle Throwable Objects that only the Homerunner can move, not the players.
Instead, players can spend their standard move or a simple action while adjacent to a baseball to Bench.
Players caught in a Kinetic Transfer with a Baseball also take 1 strike.

Swing for the fences (Range 6)
If done at range 4 or above, this attack gains Brutal and Accurate 1
No Hit:
Create 1 baseball next to the target
Weak Hit:
Target takes 1 Damage
Target is Dazed
Target is Exposed
Create 1 baseball next to the target
Normal Hit:
Target takes 2 Damage
Target is Dazed
Target is Exposed
Create 1 baseball next to the target
Strong Hit:
Target takes 3 Damage
Target is Dazed
Target is Exposed
Target is Knocked Prone
Create 2 baseball next to the target
Critical Hit:
Target takes 4 damage
Target is Dazed
Target is Exposed
Target is Knocked Prone
Create 3 Baseballs next to the target

“Knock it out of the park” (Range 2)
Target a foe in range
You may place yourself in any free space at the same exact range of the target.
If there is a Baseball in range 2, you may place it in any space adjacent to your target.
Push the target 4
Out!: Target is Guardbreak and Knocked Prone.

Spinning Swing (Unwieldy)
Create 2 Baseballs in any free adjacent space
Push every adjacent foe 3
Out!: Foe is dragged 3 instead of pushed, and takes 1 bleed.

Curveball (Range 6)
Target a foe in range
Target is Dragged 2
Create a baseball adjacent to the target.
A different foe in range 3 of the Target is Dragged 2
Create a baseball adjacent to that foe.
Out!: Drag 1 every affected character 3 times instead, Daze every affected character.```
#
Dynamic Entrance: They narrowly avoid a hit by ducking, they’re still grazed by it, their cap flies off.
A drop of blood falls onto their hand from the open wound on their forehead, they smirk and smear it in two lines under their eyes, before reaching for their cap and dramatically turning it to their back.
This is the real deal now.
Harm: 7 x players
Defense: 4
Armor: 1
Speed: 4
Worked the Rust Off:
Certain abilities can create Baseballs, Baseballs are Brittle Throwable Objects that only the Homerunner can move, not the players.
Instead, players can spend their standard move or a simple action while adjacent to a baseball to Bench.
If the Homerunner causes a Kinetic Transfer or a collide, their target takes damage equal to the amount of Strikes they have, then they take 1 Strike after the ability has resolved.

Homerun Swing (Range 2, Melee, Brutal, Accurate 1)
Special: If this pushes a Baseball, it instead Drags it 4.
When targeting, this attack may count as having range 4 and loses the Melee tag instead if there is a Baseball adjacent to the Homerunner, to do this the baseball is automatically destroyed.
No Hit:
You move 1
You Push an adjacent foe 1
You move 1
You Push an adjacent foe 1
Weak Hit:
Target takes 2 damage
Target is pushed 2
You move 1
You Push an adjacent foe 1

You move 2
You Push an adjacent foe 2
You move 2
You Push an adjacent foe 2
Critical Hit:
Target takes 5 damage
Target is Guard Break
Target is pushed 4
You move 2
You Push an adjacent foe 3
You move 2
You Push an adjacent foe 3

Gyroball throw (Range 4, Unwieldy)
Target a character in range
Target is Exposed
Target is Pushed 2
Target is Dragged 2
Create 1 Baseball in a free adjacent space to the target
Out!: Target is Knocked Prone and takes 2 ap damage

“This next one is for the fans”
Create 3 baseballs in free adjacent spaces
All foes in range 2 gain +1 strike.
The next attack adds +2 to any Push or Drag and rolls an additional d6 for its profile.

Baserunner Tackle
Move 4 Acrobatic
Foes passed through are dazed and knocked prone
Out!: Foes must spend 3 stress or be Stunned.
Create 1 baseball in a free adjacent space.```

#

Me: I think i'm getting close to releasing a new version of SOAR
My silly ass: what about adding in a section for the first session

#

I will also stop myself before I make something that's too complicated in terms of content to balance

#

but

#

my god

#

i've been considering a Wildcard stance

#

someone should stop me

#

a whole stance based around the idea of not having a unifying feature

#

basically

#

Current ideas in my head currently include an "airborne" style that's all about using a new status, Airborne, to throw enemies in the air and deal more damage to them if they are also airborne

#

I floated the idea before of a handcuff weapon, that one might fight there too for example

true mulch
#

🗞️

#

Wildcard can be an expansion or something

#

right now you should just have a decent whole and polish it

#

and you've got that, you can polish hard and if you keep adding you'll spread yourself thin

obsidian oar
#

I'll do what I want

true mulch
#

You also asked people to stop you 😛

minor coral
#

Having a juggle status would also definitely take the game slightly higher in heightened/unrealness

#

obsidian oar
#

Okay, so, in the list of things i'm DEF adding

#

for next version

#

i'm working on the GM section some more

#

Making sure the "running the first session of SOAR" bit is good enough for me

#

then my plan is to feature 3 sample settings

obsidian oar
#

oh shit hell yeah!

#

tell me how it went for sure!

obsidian oar
#

here, in case you need it

#
-A failed attempt just gives you the consequences.
-A Weak success gives you either less than you hoped and a consequence or what you hoped and some more consequences than you anticipated.
-A normal success gives you both what you hoped AND a consequence
-A strong or critical success gives you more than hoped and no consequences.

Consequences:
Harm dealt as a consequence is always AP, to prevent specific styles from being necessarily better at taking them.

Minor consequences, for when you need something that’s not quite as harsh as a normal consequence but still has some weight:
-Minor harm (a grazing blow, a low energy kick to the chest): 1 AP harm
-Things get slightly worse (they lose patience, you get put on the spot): Something happens immediately and you have to respond to it, or the next roll faces a consequence that’s one step above what it would otherwise be.
-A clock gets filled: A clock for something bad is either created or an existing one ticks 1 segment.
-They like you a bit less: If someone involved has a relationship clock, tick it down by 1 segment.

Normal Consequences, the most common type of consequences:
-Regular harm (a punch to the chest, a stab in the shoulder): 2 AP harm
-Things get worse (they bring out knives, they directly oppose you): Something dangerous happens immediately and you have to respond to it, or the next roll faces a Major consequence.
-A clock gets filled: A clock for something bad is either created with 2 segments filled or an existing one ticks 2 segments
-They like you less: If someone involved has a relationship clock, tick it down by 2 segments.
-Its a stressful time: You have to mark 1 stress

Major Consequence, these are harsh consequences that are best used sparingly:
-Major harm (a strong punch to the head, being thrown off a moving car): 3 AP harm (or 4 AP harm if it is particularly nasty)
-Things get MUCH worse (they pull out pistols, they yell at you, a car is pulling over with men in black coming out of it): Something VERY dangerous happens immediately and you have to respond to it.
-A clock gets filled: A clock for something bad is either created with 3 segments filled or an existing one ticks 3 segments, if it is especially bad fill 4 segments instead.
-They frankly hated that: If someone involved has a relationship clock, tick it down by 3 segments (or 4 if it makes sense).
-You are stressing out: You have to mark 2 stress (or 3 if it is very stressful).```

it is not a tech bro playbook I will tell that much

#

I have been thinking about a playbook that's about managing a group of folks

but that is a hard one to make

because I would need to specifically make it so the group cannot be a part of Brawls

#

or else figure out how to do that without breaking the game

obsidian oar
#

#
You have a lot of Scars, Scars aren’t necessarily physical in nature, it is all about the mark they leave, and how you interact with them.

Whenever you are defeated in a Brawl, whenever you or a nearby ally fails an Attempt, you may declare you are taking a Scar instead.
You may only do this once per Brawl if it is used in one.
When used in a Brawl, you dramatically stand back up and set your Harm to 6 after the ability has resolved.
If used on a failed Attempt, it makes it count as a successful attempt and proceeds otherwise normally.

Name your Scar, describe it and how it affects you.
A Scar is a 4 segment clock starting at 0.
Whenever a Scar would be relevant to an action you attempt, take -1 on the Attempt and -1 on the Success, if it's a success mark 1 segment, if it is a failure and you take it (it isn’t negated by taking a Scar or something else), you instead mark 2 segments.
When a Scar would be relevant to a roll you are making, instead of taking a penalty on the attempt and success, you may decide to push through, before you roll spend 2 filled segments from your Scar and instead gain +1 on the Attempt and the Success roll.

You can open up about your Scar to someone you trust, it has to be done in some form of privacy, when you do, spend 1 Stress and mark 2 segments on the relevant Scar.

Whenever you have a day or two of free time and you have filled in Scar clocks, you must choose.
-Keep them on your back: Spend 2 stress and keep them, they weigh heavy on you.
-Move On: Recover 2 stress and 2 harm and remove them, your head is clearer for now.

You can only have a maximum of 3 Scars at a time, if you do not have room for a Scar you cannot elect to take one.

Additionally, you have a Defining Scar, a more permanent one, name it and explain what it is, then set a 6 segment clock with 0 segments filled.
It doesn’t impose penalties on rolls and cannot be pushed through, it cannot be moved on, it doesn’t cost stress to keep it on your back either.
Instead, at the end of the session, mark 1 segment, and an additional one for each that is true:
-You Moved On from a Scar
-You pushed through a Scar
-You got a new Scar
When it is filled, the scar comes knocking, choose 1:
-Spend 4 Stress
-Spend 6 Wealth
-Take 6 harm
If someone is present to help you go through this when your Defining Scar comes knocking, halve these values and you both have to pay the cost```

My oneshot went well, had a classic Yakuza-style two baddasses storming the building.
One player was an elf lady Suit who used to be an assassin but now works as a pet store owner, used 2H Wanderer, Gun Hitman & Madman, the other was a grumpy badger woman Boss who owns the wharf for smuggling purposes, used Fire Style Fists and 2H Meteor with an anchor on a rope.
We did a bit of learning as we played, had a bunch of cool moments of smashing someone through a glass wall or down some stairs or into other dudes, managed to squeeze the Shop system in via a mid-tower vending machine with energy drinks and soup etc.
Had a miniboss in the form of an orcish Aerialist office lady, a lot of the fight took place on the high ground of a dining table built for minotaur-sized people and it was pretty rad when the badger threw a giant onion ring at her to start the fight lol, the fight ended with the former hitman totally icing her with a shot through the heart.

#

The final boss was her sister, a half-orc with a prosthetic arm. I had the first two phases go in reverse, she started off doing wing chun-esque Snake Stance pushing and pulling the duo around. In the second phase she went into a rage with Bajiquan-inspired Tiger Stance as her prosthetic arm fell off, all the stomps and step-ins made shockwaves and it was brutal and fun.
The players threw her arm across the arena, so as they were fighting she was launching them around and into each-other, she managed to get right to where they threw the arm as the Suit brought her sword down on the last of her 2nd phase hp, she snapped the arm back on and caught the blade, still enraged and the final phase begins.
The final phase was brutal, there were many attacks countered by her just headbutting the player's attacks. The final round was so clutch, even though the Suit dodged the hit the Reliable style damage took her unconscious, the boss and the final boss each had 4hp, but the final boss just had her turn punching the suit, so the badger threw down her anchor and came swinging, made the perfect turn of positioning, pushing and damage, sent her flying with her punches and helped the Suit back up, Suit shot her dead and then they saved the mayor's daughter from the giant fishtank and got a huge payout from the mayor.

#

It was my first time in forever running something, but the players had a ton of fun and I had a ton of fun, both coming up with characters and their stories and playing the rad combat.

Also, the player who was the Boss with the Meteor Style is a DM and game dev, she was loving how many statuses and pushing-pulling thing she could do with the style but the really short range and small movement speed combined with the focus on positioning made it seem like it was lacking something along the lines of a Sweet Spot mechanic similar to the Spear Guy enemy.

Sharing these thoughts here too

#

Been giving some thoughts for maybe potential SOAR stuff I could add that might help SOAR abilities more distinct and unique:
Pull X: Same as Push X but instead of directly away from the user, it is directly towards the user, in a straight line.
Block X: Act like Harm but takes damage before it, does not stack with itself, armor still applies to it.

Additionally i've been thinking about adding this condition:
Off Balance: Whenever you damage an Off Balance foe, you may consume the condition, removing it, to either Drag them 2 or Knock them Prone after the ability has resolved

And i've been thinking about changing Hemorrhage to read
Hemorrhage X: Same as bleed, but instead take X damage at the start of your turn of your turn, then clear all Hemorrhage. Character cannot be inflicted with Bleed as long as Hemorrhage is on them. Can’t damage someone past their last harm, ignores armor.

off balance seems like how I would have implemented a juggle state tbh

obsidian oar

As in it deals damage or bleed?

#

I could see bleed maybe

tawdry flower
#

Either way. Just “hurts more than a regular wall does”

#

Bleed is probably more interestingZ

obsidian oar
#

i sorta wanna avoid damage collide that are static spaces because i've had bad experience with Icon doing that for an edition

Is that why windows break after a collide?

“I lead the dance my friend”
Harm: 8
Stress: 4
Defense: 4
Speed: 3
Rope Grapple: 1/Round, when a foe Collides with the Herder, they must spend 2 Stress or become Immobilized and unable to affect the Herder in any way as long as they are adjacent to them.

Lasso (Melee, Range 3)
No Hit:
Target is Pulled 1
Weak Hit (1-2):
Target takes 2 Damage
Target is Pulled 3
Normal Hit (3-5):
Target takes 3 Damage
Target is Pulled 4
Strong Hit (6):
Target takes 3 Damage
Target is Pulled 4
Move to any space adjacent to the Target.

Lasso Throw
Target an adjacent Immobilized foe
Herder may spend 2 Stress to target any adjacent foe instead.
Target is Dragged 4
Kinetic Transfer: Target and any foe caught in the Kinetic Transfer take 2 Damage and are Dazed

Lasso Slap (Range 3)
Target a foe in range
Target is Dazed and Off Balance
Target is Dragged 1
Target is Pushed 2

Coin Tosser: The Rascal can toss coins in the air, Coins take up 1 space and character may move through them, players can spend their standard move to destroy all adjacent coins, which removes them from the field, this is the only way players can interact with said coins.
Some of the Rascal abilities list a Coin Consume trigger, requiring a coin to be destroyed.
Only 4 Coins can exist at a time, if more are added on the field and there are already 4 coins, destroy already present coins until new coins can be added.

Bullet Dancer
“Wanna dance partner?”
Dynamic Entrance: A burst of bullets forces you to take cover, it is never ending, like a storm.
Eventually, the bullets stop, the lingering noise of bullet casings hitting the ground rings in your ears still.
But its not over, you’re on the dance floor tonight, and you can’t let them dictate the tempo.
Harm: 20
Stress: 6
Defense: 4
Speed: 3
Every other Beat: The Bullet Dancer places Delayed AOEs, Delayed AOE only do their effects at the start of the Bullet Dancer’s next turn, and cannot overlap with one another, before they go off, characters need to spend 2 Stress to voluntarily ENTER these AOE (a character within them can move normally in them).
Unusual: A Bullet Dancer cannot be a Featured foes, but count as 3 Points instead of 2.
SMG Burst (Range 3, Brutal)
No Hit:
Target takes 1 Damage
Weak Hit (1-2):
Target takes 2 Damage
Zone 1 on Target: Other foes are Pushed 1 from Target
Normal Hit (3-5):
Target takes 3 Damage
Zone 1 on Target: Other foes are Pushed 2 from Target
Strong Hit (6):
Target takes 3 Damage
Zone 1 on Target: Other foes are Pushed 3 from Target
Critical Hit (6,6):
Target takes 4 Damage
Zone 1 on Target: Other foes are Pushed 3 from Target

Dual Burst
Gain Block 1
Next SMG Burst attack is Range 5
Place the following Delayed AOE twice, which move with the Bullet Dancer if they move before the start of their next turn.
Unlike other Lines, they do not need to move directly away from you, but they still can’t overlap with you.
Delayed Line 8: Foes take 4 AP Damage and are Dragged 4

Bullet Cyclone
Spend 2 Stress
Gain Inspired
Zone 1: Foes are Pushed 1 and Off Balance
Next SMG Burst attack is Accurate 2
Place the following Delayed AOE, which moves with the Bullet Dancer if they move before the start of their next turn
Delayed Zone 2: Foes take 4 AP Damage, are Guard Break and Doomed

Hell of Bullets (Unwieldy)
Spend 2 Stress
Move 3 (Acrobatic)
Next SMG Burst attack deals +1 Damage and is Armor Piercing.
Place the following Delayed AOE twice anywhere on the map
Delayed Zone 1: Foes take 5 AP Damage, are Knocked Prone and Dazed.
