#Miniature painting 🎨
1 messages · Page 8 of 1
Yeah, it's nice like that. My winter's gonna be either BONE BOYS or blood angels.
I GOT SO MANY SKELEBOYS NOW
Think I can give our better painters a run for their money at our competitions but just aint had the space yet
HARRYHAUSEN LIVES
I have some makeup sponges but they're a little too fine to actually lay a pattern
My trick for heat effects is to paint the hottest/interior part first and work outwards
Beast of nurgle kitbash
Doing some baby's first miniature painting and I think my freehanding turned out pretty good (wish I had some better pictures)
If you're taking pics on your phone, you should be able to adjust the focus. On my iPhone I know I have to tap the part of the pic I want in focus though it also adjusts the image brightness at the same time
Yeah mine does the same thing I have to futz with it more
Gotcha
Many phones may struggle with taking pictures this close up. It can often be helpful to set the model slightly further away, then zoom in with your camera to something like 2x. This allows you to focus easier, and effectively double your depth of field.
The latter means that it's also easier to get the whole miniature sharp, rather than just that one arm it's holding out, or that chestplate while all of the limbs get blurry.
Oh god. I'm going to waste more money.

Oh?
chat my current Dusk Wyrm scheme concept is gunmetal grey with khorne red on the left arm + pauldron. Do I give the armor trim (like the pauldrons) a different color like Brass to add more color or leave it gunmetal?
Quick research outpost kitbash, as well finishing up the Heartbreakers. Only basing to go, and perhaps a freehand.
Being on a deadline for a con gives me a massive boost in productivity. Also in stress, though.
Ohhhh nice nice! What are they for?
They're for MECHCOM, my very own tabletop skirmish game.
Nice nice!
The outpost specifically is for the debut of the TTRPG module, which will happen at the con.
Said module did not exist beyond a vague idea a month or so ago, and promising to show it was a poor decision on my part, heh. Now I've written most of a rulebook, found an artist for a cover, written a oneshot, built a character sheet, figured out a way to build custom maps instead of printing them, and done way more to be able to demo the normal game as well.
But we're getting there. Still a week left. We're gonna make it.
Nice nice!
You know, I posted this lad before but ngl this is my favourite model I've done recently.
Which con btw?
Very gritty and characterful, looks sweet.
Thx! The old metal Wolves are badass sculpts.
Rincon. It's a Dutch TTRPG con, but I've weaselled my way in with my wargame, hehe.
Honestly I would say if it's a campaign mode, like Crusade it crosses itnto the realm of RPG
Well, the TTRPG module is for that. It allows people to build pilots for the mechs, as well as spaceships, and level them up with extra buffs and abilities that turn them from regular pilots into absolute Red Barons.
A more military campaign system is also in the works, but shelved because priorities. That has the rules for spaceship combat, playing both side by side, and will eventually have a continental scale map for grand tactics, rather than skirmishes.
Ohhh very nice.
Pickin up oil wash supplies today lads any recommendations
But I want to finish designing the initial miniature ranges for the regular game before I work on that. One thing at a time. Plus or minus seven. Side projects
Is this a “wear respirator whole time” kinda poison or is this a “do it with ventilation and don’t huff it” poison
Better safe than sorry
Generally speaking it’s fine with ventilation though. Odourless thinners are also ideal but not 100% necessary
The Heartbreakers are finished, now all that remains is their alien opponents. This Agusta with a pinup has to be the tiniest freehand I've ever done. Spoilered for being a pinup of a naked lady.
Just keeping the sultanate coming
Just finished up some AoS models a friend gave me
Now those actually have the vibe of military nicknames, you know Jello had a very strange prank or story behind it
Oh yeah, it does.
All I know is that it involved three Ghost Bear elementals, a casino, and a very, very drunk Eridani that went off the range.
Which sorta lead to a riot over invalid casino tokens.
Sounds like normal shore leave
Even if it results in an accidental reenactment of Immortal Warrior with a construction mech and a trash barge?
Whomst among us
Yeah. I remember leave in Vladivostok.
“500,000 ready, and a million more on the way!”
yup though only 34 ATM. 22 regular spods, 5 arcs and 7 arfs. With Obi-wan and a jedi general as well.
i think this kitbash came out really well actually
gonna get him painted up as an iron warrior
Oh aye eventually I wanna get all the named characters for the GAR
You glued that?
Kakophonists and flawless blades done
workin hard for the money
For now, they can be part of Ace Darwin's Whipits.
I’m kinda tempted to paint something pink next
These will be Canopus Cuirassiers tho
as payment for Steiner gambling debts I assume lol
They're part of the Canopian Cuirassiers, if anyone has assaults out there, it's probably them
I already have Zeus painted up as the test piece, so add that in
Crocodile?
I’m happy I remembered that, I knew it was British
Probably my third favourite tank of the war. After the firefly and AVRE.
Firefly does go hard
I do have one as well.
Do you possibly have a Stürmtiger
Unfortunately not. I do however have an AVRE
Nice
fascines?
?
Wood bundles for trench crossing
Gotcha
I do enjoy the AVRE
Any tank equivalent to a grenade launcher is a plus from me
So, I might pick up one of Vallejo's metal color sets.
How good are the metallics there?
I’ve heard good things, like most of Vallejo
Most of vallejo's metals have been pretty good in my experience
have had good experience with gold and silver
Standard metal paint Pita but like, better
I actually got a set for free as a Going Out of Business sale gift from a hobby store I went to over the years (the owners were retiring and didn’t find a buyer for the store as-is)
Oh whoa
Haven’t done much with them but they seemed fine
Not a big set, just one of the smaller packs
Cooool
Same
There's a lot of stuff I need to use
_>
That feel when you have seven bottles of the same Olive drab
Look, it’s a good color
Am I potentially incredibly boring for really, really liking it as a color? Yes, but I mostly don’t care
7?!
I like military colors
Yes
I think I have like six to eight duplicate bottles of olive drab, khaki, dark us camo, and olive camo?
Oh well those are different paints
I thought you meant like
7 fucking army painter intermediate green bottles
I do need to get those
And two thin coats
There are actually a lot of brands that I want to buy.
Also paint question
Can I use this as a brush on primer or do I need to airbrush?
Because I am confused
It says Primer
and then there also is surface primer?
I've never used it as a brush on primer but it works beautifully through an airbrush
But I also just find brush on primers awful
You can probably brush it on, but it won't be as nice as with an airbrush
I don't know if there is a different type of primer than a surface primer, but it's what you want in a general sense either way
You can deffo brush that stuff on.
This lad was brush primed with that.
Oh wow
Yeah.
Brushpriming a knight is a level of dedication that i gotta respect
Oh my god that's wild
I was at uni and Cba'd waiting for the rain to stop.
I KNEEL
batch painting 120 neophytes in one go < brush painting primer on a knight
Concealing brushstrokes on the saturnine dread shoulders for raven guard scheme had me ready to walk off into the cold night
well..... Of my 8 knights 3 were brush primed and painted.
🫵 freak (congratulatory)
Alongside a Thanatar cavas, Thanatar Calix, Kratos, Spartan and sicaran.
I wasn't even planning on painting this guy first, but when I sat down at my desk today, he jumped out for some reason.
diorama wip
That is very yellow
Pink undercoat + contrast paint works wonders. Gonna highlight in a cooler yellow to create a stronger gradient still. Then do desaturated bases to keep the yellow popping.
Aristeia! mentioned
I haven't gotten to the actual painting of these fellas but I just finished assembling half of one of my Heavy Gear Blitz boxes!
hell yeah Heavy Gear gang rise up
"I have nothing to paint."
Same
Anyone have any recommendations for a primer that’s a good approximation of US desert tan? Like for vehicles
Primer? No. Regular paint? Vajello does a us desert tan iirc.
Painting some fire effects.
I moved on to my Peace River minis and hit a wall because all the little hip/leg plates keep skittering away and vanishing into the carpet
one of them has not turned back up and it is gone forever
how on earth do you file these things they're like 5mm wide
First real attempt at doing some volcanic looking bases for our chaos fellas
Looks nice, good job
cracked paintjob
Looks bloody stunning.
Yeah that looks great
KONO DIO DA
love that eversor model
That's the OG metal one?
oh yeah, one of 2 sculpts from 3rd i think
looks like hes even got the backpack mine and many others are missing
it is metal
I located my missing armor piece
And I’ve assembled my first Peace River gear at last
I can’t stop myself from calling them the Peace River Boys so that army is going to be called that
Skeleton ghosts done!
Gang shit, those Peace River and NuCoal plastics are so much better than the North and South stuff it’s unreal
Heavypilled Gearcels in the thread
Oh yeah they look really good! Just damn the little armor plates are a pain to prepare
I’m not super experienced yet but I’m happy with how things are turning out so far
Got a little more work in on Final Boss. Suddenly skin is becoming fun to paint.
Making solid progress now.
Man I’m not having any luck with the peace river minis
Even with rubber tweezers, I lost the head of one of them and I had to use a spare head from a Hunter sprue
Since that’s all I have extra
The heads of the new guys look really good, so I’m kinda mad
He’s supposed to be a Skirmisher but the big head is gonna make him look weird
I did already modify him to have the shoulder of a Cheetah though, so I guess if I have a bunch of battle damage, give the head a sort of mismatched highlight paint job along with the shoulder, he’ll look less weird
Still though, I don’t like the older heads, don’t like how they attach to the sprue by the eye…
Putting the sprue gate right on the sensor is one of the most diabolical things about the kickstarter plastics for sure
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so!
I guess I’m lucky that A, this happened to my army who was already going to have a bunch of field modifications on their gears, and B, this happened on a model I was already modifying
So it’s not going to look overly out of place
Plus the TAG gear and radome means it’s still obvious what his role is
Given it’s a Skirmisher with the head of a Hunter
I’ll call it the Shunter
nb. that’s a Thunder Jaguar head you’ve used in this case
Oh huh
Yeah I think you’re right
Damn there’s no good way to combine that with Skirmisher…
Well it’s got parts from Jaguar and Cheetah
Skamcat, that’s what I’m calling it
Now that's getting a-head in life hahaha
👉 👉
Another Aristo done.
Oooh, ARCs
Yeah. Starting with the arcs.
Orange clones 👍
I need to decide on a clour scheme, huh
Vajello grey
It's more a off white though
Works great for going to every colour I've found.
Would priming black work at all?
It would be hellish
Going from black to white is a measure of patience and lots of layers.
Grey primer supremacy imho
I find it's not too bad if you have a light Grey with solid coverage
Oh aye, I meant to add in my experience
Have any tips?
For which bits?
On how to do clones, really
Fair. Prime grey or white is all I have so far.
These are the first clones I'm doing. Much more used to space marines.

Yellow’s pretty manageable if you do pink or like a real warm brown as your base layer.
Just thin your paints after that and take it easy
Any issues with maroon or lime green?
HELL yeah
If its a dark basecoat, build up to lime. Maroon I’d do purple.
On white primer?
Should be a piece of cake, always keep em thinned so you aint caking on, might take two or three passes as always
Yupyup
And there’s the squad done. Freehands could be better and I still need to varnish everything, but they’re done (currently missing one spearman whose power lance snapped and does not want to be pinned- drill went through the side of the haft when I tried)
I feel like I'm learning a lot of new things about painting all of a sudden.
The leather isn't done yet.
I see your weathering, and have decided to paint up a batch of shinies
Every paint I need for these gits.
I presume they're 212th?
The 332nd was 501st, wannit?
Yeah. Mine are gonna be a rouge set from post 66 that have managed to link back up to 'soka
A little more progress... I might do the entire Asgard faction like this.
Surely I will not regret this for a full marines army
Designing a bust is a new experience, but it's going fairly well.
I may or may not be painting too much detail that the final build will almost certainly obscure
Hey. How would one do dust plumes behind this car?
Assuming one does not own an airbrush
You can get like coloured wool for felting I think
Wires for support and some wool or loose cotton yeah
I painted a good pair of eyes. I’m not gonna think about how many pairs of eyes are in the rest of my neophytes. Or my genestealers on the whole. Where even the tanks have 3 to 6 Lads sitting on the roof
Bit of a weird question:
I'm doing Ork flesh. I've been doing aeldari emerald over stegadon scale or caliban green, but these have naturally, produced very dark greens. Any ideas for getting a good, bright, saturated green?
contrast over white for brighter greens, probably
if the base colour is very dark, the result will also invariably be darker
I don't know modern color names
But I did Goblin Green as a basecoat with a green wash for lighter or black wash for darker and then a very light drybrush of goblin green
Two thin coats emerald green is really bright and can really help liven up a green surface if you use it to paint the raised surfaces
Its what I used to get the raised folds of this fellas coat brighter and I had to dull it down with washes
Go yellow and glaze green
I do green as caliban -> warpstone -> moot green drybrush
Yellow was a great shout, thanks
A work still very much in progress (most of this is dry-fit, atm), but I'm still happy with where it's going.
Miniature painters of PilotNET, I enlist you upon a Quest
Are there any good brands of brush applicable primer?
Vajello primer works very well.
It's meant for airbrush, but works just as well with a brush I did 2 of my knights that way
Cool, cool
I just want to paint this
Without doing a metric ton of masking work, lol
Aye yeah brush primer would deffo work. Especially Vajello.
Ohh, fun.
Yeah, Vallejo is my backup brush primer for when I can’t use rattlecan
its also nice as its already thinned for airbrush and comes in 200ml bottles for like a fiver
What is that? It’s neat
Stalker, from the Horizon series
Stealth guy
I hacked together a good Medium Rifle with a scope
I'm very happy with how it turned out
What has two thumbs and basically wasted an entire pot of Agrellan Earth because they forgot to paint an underlayer on the GIANT BASE they had?
This nerd.
F
At the start of that sentence I went “oh, you spilled it didn’t you”
But then it took an unexpected swerve!
I mean. I did. Except it was more of a pour, because it was on purpose.
It's just that Speed Freeks bases are ridiculously large and I ended up having to do it twice.
truly. why are they like that
godspeed
you are a saint I woulda told my secret sant 'Im stupid don't wanna spend $5 in washes to get the base'
I make washes out of inks for big bases
Ink+matte medium+water+flow improver (or just dish soap)
Just sorta mix ratios until the vibe is right
So, I just got my Shrine Luminor in. Good to have a Big Project lined up right after this vehicle, I guess.
(I am not going to do this model justice, I can feel it)
First painting attempt
Pro Acryl Sky Blue, Titanium White, and Magnesium
it's a misc mecha model resin printed by someone at our LGS
ONE OF US
That's a Full Spectrum Dominance unit from The Lazy Forger, by the looks of it. Might be a Walrus.
We were given the print by a friend at our LGS
Yeah, that makes sense. They're good models. Seeing one on a hex base is amusing.
Enjoy your model.
I'm into BattleTech
Also hexagons are cool
Hex base supremacy imho
so, do we need to wash minis before priming?
It depends
Depends on the kind of mini
Regular plastic ones, like a GW kit or similar no. Resin and metal kits, yes.
BattleTech is the mins we have
The official ones?
yes
Yeah those should be primable straight from the box
okay
Anyone have any tips for a primer that’d reasonably replicate that desert tan look we got going on a lot of modern US military vehicles?
How about vajellos desert tan?
Sorry, should have said a spray primer, I don’t have an airbrush
Ahhhh aye fair, I normally brush prime ngl and use the Vajello pots for that.
Army painter do a rattle can from the looks of it.
To me I would say close enough that a wash will make it look grimy
Aye, this is from my knowledge of the brands I normally turn to
You can safely paint it on, it self-levels. Airbrush is just easier.
Pretty close, would wonder how it’d react to weathering (ie getting too dark)
Out of the can that looks like about what I’d want
Having an annoyingly hard time finding paint schemes that aren’t based around crazy train-guy detailed with acrylic paints I’ve never even heard of
What?
Like, stuff that isn’t from people doing much bigger models and using hex-coded paints that I wouldn’t even know where to get
And joking about how hardcore model train guys get into their detail
Though also, model train guys are to be feared and worshiped for their crazy knowledge of techniques
What are you painting?
And I mean you could just look up what the hex code is and pick similar colors, no?
It’s more that stuff painted at a much larger scale looks funny when you try to do the same paint scheme on much smaller stuff
And it’s not all hex-coded, that was just an example
But to answer the question, I’m doing some 15mm Bradley’s
However, the more I’m looking and thinking, Zandri Dust does seem like it might be the way to go
How big are they?
15mm scale, I don’t have exact measurements
I could go measure one I guess
About 3x1.5”
Hmmmm. Yeah zandri dust with agrax earthsade and a black damage bits on the edges would work.
Yeah, I found something similar that I might try to use as a concept too
Basically that but also has some highlight options
So. I think the only thing really left to do here paint the base rim and try to figure out a way to hide/remove those white spots where the superglue dried weirdly.
Our first painted mini will be a Cyclpos in 3rd Canopian Light Horse colors
We grabbed the 2nd color today
Ohhh very nice.
It's a simple black and gray/silver trim
We're also poor, it helps narrow options
Nice nice. Main advice I have is thin your paints.
“Man Raven Guard are cool but their paintjob is so uninspiring sometimes what if I just freehand every armourial”
<————— dumbass
Have kinda just realized how to streamline at least, the insignia’s all inside a regular pentagon so I can just do a white pentagon and carve out with black
I think the others will go faster
Oh nice
You’re gonna get a kick out of their tactical squad designator, different than all other legions
wack
I love painting concentric circles of white paint on every marine
punishment for caring about space marine lore lmao
Well I guess I'm a Jade Falcon player now.
Bird up
You're not alone.
I think pretty much everyone looked at the Aces box art, went "Yeah, I dig that." and proceeded to paint them up that way.
I am entirely guilty of this myself as well.
How we feeling about this treerunner flesh, gang?
Chrimmus present built...
I love seeing battlestations as chaotic as mine from painters I envy
There is hope yet
Oh aye?
And ngl I just prefer the chaos to cleanness. Sure I'll loose a bit for a few days, but everything is at least there.
I continue my quest to try to make the Medium Autocannon look good
Not sure I nailed it with this one but it looks all right to me at least
does anyone have experience with 90% white paint armies, i sprayed these corprus brethren white scars but when i go into anything else the white mars massively and everything gets so ugly and goopy, and covering it up with white just doesnt cover very well, ive managed like a single passable pauldron so far lol
How long between spraying and painting are ye waiting?
this guy has been primed for about a day, i just attacked him with more white scars rn to try and cover some red errors from his hair
oops sorry lol
Hmmmmm not sure what's happening there then. White scars is not a paint I use a lot ngl, personally much prefer vajellos dead white and off-white.
They on on super smooth.
It's how I did the white here.
this one has turned out slightly nicer on the pauldrons but it seems like any mistake on white is basically nearly irrepairable, im thinking of respraying the first marine because theres just so much miscolour to remove
oooh theyre reallt nice, yeah i mighr just try vallejo they seem better from my experience
with their metallics
Vajello is so much nicer IMO, the only gw paints I return to a lot are iron warriors and ad mech grey. As I slowly run out of gw paints. I'm moving to Vajello
So a good trick with white is to not start with white. Put down a basecoat of dark grey, then aggressively drybrush up to med grey, light grey, and then to white. Each layer should cover a little less of the model. This will both give you coverage and naturally create a shading gradient so the white doesn't lok like flat primer.
thats i have some slaanesh grey i will try tomorrow!
I’m still a long way off from painting my minis, I’m assembling all of them and then I’m going to batch prime and paint them
That’s the plan anyway
But what’s the story with different varnishes, what do you use each one for? I know of matte, gloss, and satin varnishes but I don’t really know what I should be using for my robots
My skill level is pretty low overall and I don’t have any space for an airbrush setup, I’d be using rattle cans for priming and sealing
All right.
So, the varnishes you can think of them as a sealer.
Gloss is for if you want something from a model to standout the most or do a specific effect.
Matt is the opposite where it tones everything down.
Satin is sorta a mix between both?
Usually, you apply the varnish after you're done painting, shading, and whatever else you're doing.
Yeah. Varnish Is normally for protecting the mini from damage. I heavily recommend varnishing metal and resin models.
Plastics you can sometimes get away without varnishing, but in the long term you should
Yeah, especially if you're gonna be playing with them a lot.
Or if you don't want the paint job to get ruined by the room.
Because eventually it will get ruined by the elements.
More or less what others said, but generally gloss is the tough armor-like varnish that protects the model from chipping; matte doesn't offer much in the way of protection but it kills the shine if applied over gloss so you generally add 1-2 coats of that after.
Satin is semi-gloss. Some studios like GW use it exclusively, others don't. I've had limited use for it myself.
The main difference is how glossy it looks
Got it thank you!
you also use a gloss varnish before using an oil or enamel wash so that it smooths out the surface and lets the wash flow smoothly over rather than gathering in the micro-detail of the paintbrush marks etc
AoS is forcing me to paint terrain
Painting terrain is fun because there's waaaaaay less expectations on quality compared to miniatures, so you can just go ham with some drybrushing and that's like 90% of the work.
we're gonna grab a cup from a thrift store to use in our painting tomorrow morning
10 billion lil guys
painted up my girlfriend's christmas gift to me. Very pleased with how it turned out
baby’s first gradients. At least one of them turned out ok
The first one looks quite nice, you’ll continue to get a feel for it with practice!
Ty!
Gradients were one of those things that came slowly and then all at once for me.
Those look very good already
Mmmmm new lightbox
I need to stop bouncing between projects
Power ranger ready to go
managed to touch up the caliver coils a little (other side still looks kinda janky)
New Year, some new Tartary Army Korp
Love love the snow camoo
Also 👀 that ghulam doctor got a little lost (and a lot worse at medicine)
man the Coldfront TAK are such great sculpts. all bangers
Ye!
Yeah, I just had the model collecting dust and said "Congratulations, Comrade. You've been drafted."
It works!
progress is slow but steady
Chaos Saurus?
So it would seem.
First skitarii unit done, pteraxii underway
Not too happy with the plasma glow but two lieutenants done for my Carcharodons!
If you thin down some white and let that flow into the recesses, that might help it... glow more.
They're looking excellent, btw.
Bit of an odd question folks, but I'd like to see some pieces of 28mm terrain that you've had the most fun playing with. I'm gonna be designing my own MDF kit, and I'd love to get some inspiration for shapes and layouts.
I tried with white ink (the whole glow effect was a bit of a failure after I royally screwed up doing the airbrushing for the glow), might need to thin it more I think
Yeah, glow is tricky. In this case, the brightest part should be essentially inverted from the usual painting. The most light is coming from deep inside, while the tops of the coils should be darker.
The (now) classic warhammer 40k sector administratum/mechanicum terrain tbh. My lgs used to have a 4x4’ board chock full of it plus custom made walkways and bridges. Don’t have pictures sadly but it was a blast to play on
Kitbashed Rogue Trader character (Arch Militant with Psy Rating), quite happy with how it came out!
They told me the Lumineth were a pain to paint. I should have listened
i like 1 a lot
Fuck it lets freehand a banner for my shitmen. Something simple like a burning city at night
Okay I feel pretty good abt this for 2hrs of relaxed work
not gonna be winning any competitione but not like it matters
compared to the previous iteration
so yea we ball
kinda yea. i excused it as draconic chaos mutations
Printed some 15mm late Cold War guys, and hot damn are they tiny. They have lil bases on them, but they seem very small for how light they are and as such likely to tip over. Any tips to expand their base size other than like, gluing them to a penny or some shit? Also I plan to magnetize the bases for transportation so that then makes me worry that whatever ad hoc solution I come up with will be weirdly tall. Would appreciate any help anyone has on the subject
Not sure where best to ask about this so thought I’d try here first
And man are they itty bitty, I don’t know until I started printing it that I could have had thinner layers which might(? I don’t know for sure I’m not a printing expert) have helped make the lil guns a bit less brittle, so maybe more stuff to look into in the future. I guess I could see if I could expand the bases of the models themselves but I would have no idea how to do that myself
How big are the bases. One shout could be 1mmx3mm (so 3mm wide and 1mm tall) magnets hidden in the basing material
Or 1x5mm magnets
Hmm, I’d probably have to get calipers
Yeah fair. I just buy my magnets from Amazon
I’m also just worried about them tipping over when in use
As a note for getting bulk ones.
Oh the magnets will help with that, they aren't very heavy, but will add some extra mass.
Sure, but I guess I worry lol
I’m one of those “por que no los dos” type of people in these situations
15mm dudes always come on some kind of lil base but I base mine proper style on small coins
Big fan of the euro cent for that
Lemme see if I have an illustrative picture
late Soviet motor rifles by Oddzial Odmy, Melusine and Konrads by Slave2Gaming
I printed my guys, and they (almost all) have lil circular bases, it’s more that I’d also wanna magnetize em and my usual method is putting on adhesive magnets and I’m worried that might be too tall
But I guess I could just give it a shot with pennies (though that feels hilarious odd to consider now that pennies are technically going out of circulation)
The good news: found washers that don’t raise their hight too much and makes them much more stable!
The bad news: the washer is non-magnetic, and weighs enough that the adhesive fridge magnet stuff I have doesn’t make it stick to the magnet-receptive sheeting I have lined the bases of my boxes with
The ??? News: Since they are washers, they have holes in them, so I could potentially find 1x6mm magnets that would fit in there and maybe support the weight enough to have the models not move around
Hobby problems require janky solutions I guess
Want to show off a project that is almost finished
A Shilone because I collect as many non-mech Battletech minis as I possibly can
FLYING WINGS RAHHH
The work, she is progressing nicely
Repainting some minis from when I just started out, ten years ago. I came a long way, but I have much more to learn still.
birb dog
Wip volcanic bases for our new chaos fellas
This WIP is looking... good? Who gave me permission to do that? Or think that?
are u loving yourself and happy with what you've done?!
Ew. Loving myself? Hell no!
looks great
Anyone know any painting tutorials for 15mm Cold War US Army dudes?
I've painted nothing but mechs for a little too long and now I want to go crazy on a few fantasy minis.
working on my Chapter Master
Making my own MDF terrain kit.
Oh hell yeah.
A cool idea would be to have that clear stand light up with an LED underneath.

It's enclosed, edgelighting in this design isn't gonna work out I fear. But I might do a version that could do it one day.
Oh yeah, Saucermen does some great designs.
Very simple coin system going on, so I think it'd be doable.
I have done an edgelit design before, but that was a big info sign, nothing tabletop. If I get another opportunity, I might mess around with it.
https://saucermenstudios.com.au/3d-printed-terrain-guides/ They have build guides and I 100% support taking notes, haha.
After so many mechs, some fantasy minis are fun to experiment with.
Lumineth are cool, okay?
There we go...
Oooh pretty
Oooh
Finished up the chaos warriors with an attempted freehand banner
Success. Bitchin banner
Lookin forward to more thats some good lookin chaos warriors
Thanku!
Yeah both looking forward to and slightly dreading the knights, they seem really complex
Slowly working through my wolves doing their armour one at a time.
Then it will be onto the trims, then weapons and finally pelts.
Think I finally got a handle on how to paint my unkillable chud sons
Prime ivory (wraithbone)
- Basecoat AP Amber Skin
- Paint veins in xereus purple or sotek green
- Glaze in AP elderflower
- Glaze in Warlock Magenta
- Shade all recesses in extremely diluted Elderflower then
- Purple wash
Just make each stronger color glaze smaller/further down the arm to get the gradient
There can only be one.
Not quite done.
I probably shouldn't be allowed to paint minis.
Does this still count as mini? I think it does.
It does
the miniest
It was, until I went onto 6mm.
A few new things to work on.
Bugs back on the table, 1 ravener down, 4 more to build
Mon hun????
Yus!
Coooool
Ye. There's Gacha boxes now.
I see!
(pre primer) but here's the ones I have so far!
2 different boxes. The painted ones come like that.
Oh aye. That's all the spare heads from boxes. One of many bits boxes.
Hehe ye
The minis are meant to be stone, but I prefer them painted
I will be trying to get the gore Magala one
But now for the madness of doing every scale.
Looh mitzu?
Yus!
I have one of my top 3 monsters. (Mitzu, Gore/Shag Mag and Tobi-kidachi)
Luckily the boxes aren't actually that expensive. (£13.99 a pop)
Alas no Tobi in the boxes, but there is a gore
Ravener the second. 40% of the kill team ready.
(Well, gotta give it a glossy carapace but)
2 raveners to a fully painted 500pts. Also a fully painted ravener KT. I can almost taste it
Heat effects are just so much fun to paint
And that's the nids done for now
Are they perfect? No. Are they enough to count as fully painted for events? Absolutely.
Two part question: I’ve found some free STLs of 15mm kinda late Cold War US troops that I like pretty well (especially at $free.99), but am kinda unsure how to go about painting them in a way that doesn’t just end up looking like a blob at this scale. Anyone know of any guides or paint schemes for painting late 70s to about 90s US infantry?
Second part anyone know of any STLs of 15mm Soviet dudes or irregular fighters that are available free? Probably low chance but you never know what someone just put up for everyone just as a fun project
It’s kinda cool how sometimes you’ll occasionally find crazy detailed (or just pretty good but still with passion) STLs just available for free because the creator just does it for fun
Drone operator with his lil drone buddy put together :3
oooh sick as hell
And now our blooded operator with pulse blades cuz fuck it melee tau why not
Another lance of FWL mechs. Unfortunately they made the Faustian bargain of accepting a Vulcan into the team so that they could get their hands on a Marauder II.
Pouring epoxy resin deeper doesn’t automatically make it look deeper.
In this build I created a 4.5cm deep resin sea as part of the sea/harbour board.
The thickness alone isn’t what makes it feel deep.
In this video I break down the structural design, layered tinting, surface texture and scale tricks that create the illusion of depth in...
wip
That's one of the fancy bases right? Who for?
angron transfigured HH
yeah, nothing a heatgun + repositioning and trimming resin would do
i fixed the wings and made it connect better
trusting the process
How thin are the wings?
Ahhhh that's better than I thought. I was looking at pics and thought it would be the blade of Russ's sword. Very thin
result so good im going to cry
Yeah damn dude is dead as hell
ABSOLUTELY COOKIN
Breaking from endless genestealers train to do an art project
hell yeah
this is awesome
I got the hubris to imagine myself one of the best painters in the state (i think I narrowly squeeze into top 10-12) but I also have very few display ready fully done models from the endless treadmill of getting new GSC lists to at least tabletop/tourney-standard
This has been a nice break to remember I’m actually a little bit good
Decals done!

Turns out the Agincourt waterslides I got work well on knights some 1600 years afterwards too.
Wip chaos lord we got for our birthday
We have chosen the arduous path of the lava lizard
I have a question, if I wanted to make the red pop a bit more.
Would I use something like evil sunz scarlet or wazdaka red?
Use a real light shade. For my reds I normally go evil sunz or blood red to get it bright.
Ohhhhh
These were blood.
I used bloody red as the basecoat
(from vajello(
so would evil scarlet complement
hmmm probably
And here she is with the base colors blocked in, ready for the rest of the process tomorrow :3
That is a beautiful woman and her horse
generally, yes, that's a good start. If you really want to push red to be bright, you can either go the orange way, or the pink way.
For lenses like that, I'd recommend a technique called 'jeweling', highlighting them somewhat like this, ending on that dot with pure white. That will make the lens look glass-like and shiny.
That's what I've slowly been doing here.
That's a good start. On a rectangular surface, however, the light would normally behave a little differently. You would expect a small, L-shaped specular reflection (the white part) in one of the upper corners.
Yeah, the white in the middle is because I want that lighter
And I don't have many greens so been doing a lot of wet blending.
The sun (assuming that is your dominant light source here, which feels reasonable), would not be dead centre in front of your viewing window, after all. If it is, poor driver.
Might I recommend mixing a little yellow into your green instead? It helps you not lose saturation while still decreasing value.
You can even combine some white and yellow in there.
Ye that will probably work. Luckily the cupola windows are more curved. And much smaller.
Here's a few cockpits I did on battle mechs recently, perhaps those might prove a useful reference.
I admittedly did go a little wild with the colours.
And here she is all done
I may have underestimated how many layers I would need to get this purple smooth.
the ron is aggressive
Angey Ron
Frustrated Frank
Experimenting with iridescence.
Pupby!
That moment when you somehow fit two howitzers and a TCB on one mech.
Been able to paint eyes without feelin awful lately. Its a nice glowup
yeee you got it!
The feeling of "wait, I can actually pull off this technique" is so rewarding
And I’ve got one of the factions with no amazing ways around it
Lotta humans without helmets
nothing better than lots of (good) practice to get good at something :)
and its satisfying when that something is a thing people find impressive and tricky haha
Heraldry is fun to freehand.
anyone know some good plastic or resin minis that you might use to kitbash like. a more fantasy-y/heroic Samurai-type character?
like I know some historic samurai ranges, I think both Fireforge Games and Warlord Games have plastic samurai boxes
but I'm looking for suggestions for kits I should look at nabbing bits from to juj up historical samurai, etc.
bonus-points for non-games-workshop stuff but I won't turn away GW reccs
and as far as 3d printed stuff goes my only stipulation is that it has to be something I can easily get printed and shipped to my house, as I don't have my own printer
How about this lot?
This fantastic set provides you with a great selection of heroes for your warband, from the noble Daimyo to the sneaky Ninja Master! These models are bursting with character, and give you plenty of options to choose from when building your army. Each one of these models is covered with little touches, from scabbarded t
ah no they are metal.
yeah nah I was disappointed those ones are metal they look good!
and their lady-warriors too 😭
Yeah.
You could try Herofroge
Forge. But that's my sleepy ass out of ideas for now
Conquest's Yoroni is all yokai and nobunaga era stuff
its pretty fantastical and may be a larger scale, but generally decent sculpts
Modelled up some turrets for two friends both playing artillerist artificers.
Ooh multibase walkers
Yeah, from the Gundam Assemble IBO set.
Holy shit that rips
Is that a Fafnir saying trans rights? Sweet.
I'd like you to meet my heavy gauss rifles, trans and rights. Now be respecting them else you want to be receiving a structurally superfluous new behind
wip
love me some texturing
I'm not even done with the weathering! I have grime paints to apply.
Lord-Veritant painted up
Maximus will be shiny.
Aristeia!, a game by Corvus Belli, which is meant to be a televised combat sport in their larger Infinity setting.
Nice!
Thanks. And yeah, somehow it's the characters that I wasn't planning to play which keep surprising me with the most enjoyable painting process.
A man and his Dog
Harlequining up my Phantom Titan
Looking for ideas on how to replicate the scheme on the mount here
So far, my best idea is basically Palid Wytch Flesh -> Rykland Fleshshade -> Pyroar Glaciar and then freehanding the black markings on top
I think starting from a light tone like PWF is a good call, at least for getting the blue to cover as well. I'm just worried that it would leave you with little to no options to highlight up to. I'd start darker, so you get a richer tone.
Char!
Thrice as fast to paint as a normal Zaku.
Just finished up our new chaos Chosen :3
Some desert boys who fought in the Scouring Sands campaign.
tomb queen
not painted yet but my EC kitbash lord is done
SEPHIROTH
no u c Sephiroth holds his sword in his left hand and has a wing on the right. This is a totally original character who takes no inspiration from other sources

I think we can call this demon prince done, now on to the base :3
Not a big robot, for once.
Priming a mini
what is that thing?
An Enigma Foundry
what's it form?
Warmachine
forgot how fun painting was
Tonk! M113! Hmmmmveeee
i have now done the initial painting of the entire command section! two tonks, a humvee (should've been two but they missed one 😔), an M113, and an M548 (technically should have been a FMTV with a trailer but there's no good way to get those in 6mm so I went with the tracked logi instead)
and then i have three whole tank platoons to paint too lmao
and then basing
Nice
6mm definitely means you worry less about if you need to paint the vision blocks or road wheels, so that’s at least something
oh im painting the vision blocks and roadwheels
i'm trying to decide how insane about basing i want to be/how much i'm willing to spend on basing materials
experimenting with camo netting (made out of gauze)
a squidman for relicblade! super proud of it
I love these colours!
never painted a freehand insignia before and i figured the best mini to do it on would be my most expensive one (land raider spartan)
thank god it came out okay
i like how it turned out
A ways to go but I'm pretty happy with how this worked out
On the modelling side
Really cool!
Chaos Sorcerer grindset
I like them
Trying to figure out what color to paint the base rim here -- thoughts?
can never go wrong with black
or a deep blue maybe
Goblin green!
bushwacka
reminds me of the "marine landing" camo from MW4
never seen it
[Reply to:](#1171221956775907408 message) bushwacka
reminds me of the "marine landing" camo from MW4
wow there's actually a photo of it
the Blowjob Brothers ready to hit the field, base rims always ought to be black 😤
going to snap the next time someone sends us an essay about our painting and how they'd do it
Why would someone do that?
Did you ask for critique or did they just drop it on you?
tell em to paint deez
Warning: I feel like I'm a bit of a painting novice myself but I feel like I've learned a thing or two that might help you. Which paint are you using? I started out painting minis with Krylon Fusion rattlecan paint for a primer and base coat and craft paints. I found them pretty frustrating to work with. After doing a ton of research, I boug...
because people are opinionated and there are so damn many essays
it hurts the brain
Think we're going to have to start saving for more paint colors
just what we don't need; another money sink
or to steal from others
Buying paint really sneaks up on you lol
I don't want to think about how much I've spent
we turned off reply notifications because we were overwhelmed
Anyone have any ideas on how to practice my painting without running out of minis?
Toys
Buy some cheap toys, prime 'em, and then practice.
(In the future this can give you fodder to use for the more miniature agnostic games.)
(Buy some cheap plastic soldiers, farm animals, or dinosaurs.)
Or 3D printing, if you have a friend or library that has one
Minis can be repainted several times before you'll start to lose detail, especially as you get a better feeling for paint consistency as you go.
Keep your first ever mini untouched, though. That's your starting point. I still look back at my first little guy from ten years ago.
Another tip is if you have a local Warhammer store get the free model of the monty.
Month. I use those for practice a lot.
and isopropyl alcohol to strip
My other minis from those ten years ago aren't safe though. They're getting repainted nowadays.
They're great for trying new techniques or using as little palette cleansers. It's the only thing I occasionally pick up when I am near a warhammer store.
I also use them for warming up if I haven't painted in months.
(an example of how much you can paint the same model is Vince Venturella, a youtuber and award-winning painter, uses the same ogre model he did ten years ago for testing paints and doing examples of techniques. He's never stripped it, usually just re-primes or repaints over the top. Probably has hundreds of coats of paint on it and it's still looking pretty fresh)
Oh yeah, good call.
Nope
No store
Ahhh damn that's a shame.
Did we do any good?
this is just priming
for priming I would say try to get one more layer over the panels to see if you can clean up any of the darker spots.
But take my advice with 1 grain of salt because I prefer to spray primer 99/100 times
Yeah, best to do a lot of light costs to ensure full, smooth coverage
Oh is this painted primer and not spray? I personally always spray prime specifically to get that smooth base coat
It can be hard to spray if you don't have a ventilated place to do it though
I have to spray in the ally behind my apartment and I live somewhere hot as fuck so I have to do it early in the morning
Primer is really forgiving with application since it's designed to shrinkwrap whatever its on
I would say try putting another coat on your least favorite goob, see if you can get better coverage without losing detail, and go from there
Overall, the darker the base coat you are putting on, the less you need to worry about perfect application since you're going to be covering it all up anyways
But, I want to stress that your first coat is good. These things just often take more than one go over
There's no harm in it
Yeah. That first coat looks very good.
okay, sorry to bug you all
no worries Jainus we're happy to talk about painting
Sorry for what? Trying to learn? Please, don't be.
That looks fine for a first coat, I've had no problems painting minis with a coverage like that.
Please note that this might depend on your regular paints. If your base colour has a very strong coverage, this'll do. If it's quite transparent, getting the primer more even will help everything look smoother.
i want to give my characters different coloured hyperphase weapons to make them stand out and I like the green but im not digging the way that it lines up with the purple weapon colour. feels kind of gaudy. im wondering if maybe a yellow would work better. any thoughts?
the lord is a little messy because I havent dont my edge highlighting or touch ups yet
A warm yellow would probably work. It's the direct contrast to purple.
I was thinking an orange/yellow to replace the purple actually. sorry if i phrased that badly
I see. That can also work, yes. Especially orange, that'll contrast with the blue.
So, I've decided to start buying contrast and speed paints.
What are some good colors for lenses/cockpits.
Because, I'll be honest, I am sorta tired of regular yellow (even with a pink layer) taking so dam fucking long.
I use it for power weapons and marine eyes.
Layering is also very important.. I normally do Talassar base over white, then vajello royal blue then white in the corners.
Not sure. I'll test it tonight
Black makes everything over it darker, white lighter.
Iirc
Like here. Both the golds are vajello gold brown. Left is with a black prime, right a white/grey prime.
ohhhh
Yeee. The clones has additional yriel yellow highlights but that's very yellow
Priming in black can help you establish shadow tones, and any parts of the model that are accidentally left unpainted in the shadows will be harder to notice. It serves as a good base for many metallics, as well as darker colours like blues and deep purples.
Priming in white, on the contrary, can make small mistakes stand out more, but helps many of your more transparent layers stay more vibrant from the get go.
Personally, I prefer my off-white grey primer. The benefits are nearly identical to white, but I find the primed model is slightly easier to read, which helps me figure out how I want to paint it.
I'm using vajello grey (it's almost white) for my clones as it's so much easier. Everything else primed black as it's normally darker more realistic tones.
Yup, that's my go to as well.
Though in reality, most of my models tend to get a basecoat of deep purple first at the moment. It's a great base for several colours which I enjoy using a lot right now.
Ohhhh yeah that's fair.
Also. Iirc Prime ≠ Base
Correct, but primer will influence the base colour on your model, as it will influence all colours.
Ye. I've just met some people who use their primer as their base. Even for my clones I'm going over the primer with off-white. Which is almost identical, but slightly brighter
Some people do use coloured primer to get a head start of sorts, but that really only applies when one doesn't plan to clean up their mistakes, as the spray paint will inevitably have a different texture from the brushed paint.
Ye. Also my favourite bit about Vajello primers is that they can be used just from the bottle with a brush.
I've done 3 knights that way
Yikes, that's dedication.
But yeah, I do the same when I can't be bothered to get the airbrush set up.
Yeah. Luckily you can't tell which of the knights were primed by hand as all 8 were painted without airbrush or rattle can bar primers.
Brush primer works great it just takes forever
Me earlier tonight: okay imma OSL
Me now: damn OSL got hands
I will say I’ve gotten absurd mileage out of a purple or midnight blue primer for establishing shadows without desaturating stuff like black can be wont to do
Purple is a real sleeper color but it goes on super well and does shadows great
My bragging rights is No Black Paint Whatsoever Raven Guard Scheme
It's brilliant for giving punchy colours and interesting NMM.
That base is still the primer color and honestly makes the whole fucking thing work at all
Vallejo's dark purple is one of the most painless paints I've ever used
Its incredible
Also whatever they put in vallejo magic blue is accurately named. That is a stupid vibrant paint that can do 1 coat and done
But at least for the new folks watching white and black and sometimes grey or bone are probably best bets for a lot of things, I’m in agreement with everybody up above lol
The source itself is rippin
You probably just wanna extend it out a bit, I’d start with something on par with really thinned out sybarite green and then shift quickly back to the blue
OSL for sure got hands but I also think a lotta people overthink it
S just blending, you got this
That, and making sure it's the brightest part of the model.
I've had these Full Spectrum Dominance minis printed for ages and somehow never picked them up. Painted this guy up very quickly so I could give it a freehand.
Wanted to see if I could get this scrungly boy done in a night.
behold

IT. IS. FINISHED!
Really looking forward to the full release of Gundam Assemble though I'll still have to order online thanks to all the hobby shops in town being scalpers
thought: green stuff serpent in the mouth of a house devine karnivore
or i'll just stuff a very small toy in there because small detailed stuff is probably hard to do...
