#Monster Hunter

we take those
I want to play Rise after not playing for a while
can't decide if I should boot up my old save or start fresh
how far did you get
i beat basically everything
sunbreak too?
all that would be left is grinding investigations for the final magnamalo variant
eh, i probably have enough other games to play that i shouldn't get back into a hundred hour timesink
Thank u
||hunter are sick of killing newborn dragon so now they killing the mom||
oh yeah, I don't think I've done scorned mango
now that's something else
risen cgv down :D
"nah that cliff won't protect you in these new games"
"BITCH, YOU THINK MY HITBOXES ARE FIXED? NAH, SIS! WE MOVIN LIKE GRANDPA PLESIOTH OUT HERE!"
Vertical mobility? Nah, we do vertical hurtboxes in the house
π π
all those hours of playing valor LS paid off
@tardy grotto for some snazzy perfect guards
i keep forgetting I can turn the instablock followup
could have hit the wings for some nice damage
lol
hell yeah
holy shit lmao (Mail of Hellfire)
35 raw for 100 defense is pretty good, but blue scroll π
getting the static electricity shock from a car door handle and fucking dying
π
I wish they didnt have the crown farming achievements bc otherwise I would probably 100% at least one of my monstie hunters
I'm pretty close on wilds
maybe sometime I will finish the sunbreak post launch content but I don't wanna fuck with the like big grinding mechanics they put in

if you ever want to break it i'm down πββοΈ
and yeah i'm not the biggest fan of the rng skill reroll for qurio stuff... but thankfully the anomaly investigations themselves aren't bad imo
ough..
rampage π
ok yeah this game has unrealistic expectations of me
my camps π
ough dang
let's see what world is asking
huh 57/100 even though i've played it less
when it has stuff on there like train lots of buddies and I've been doing boosted dojo nonstop for 200 hours and not got it
thats too much lol
oh but they have a bajillion achievements just for tiering up
dang really :o
I have 70/100 on world
huh i have the buddy one, idk what the conditions are tho
who knows
i would check in and switch em out
these are my only remaining wilds ones
π π π
I at least have that for world bc I played basically all of it with friends
gonna suck to get for wilds though I fear
would just have to grind out SOS flare responses

you gotta name your lil bird
I was not expecting how much Wilds Gunlance is clicking with me as a World/Wilds swaxe main
Like I would've assumed they don't have much in common
But actually, they share a lot wrt resource and combo management, the big difference being that the swaxe's defense game is based on evasion and the GL's defense game is based on guarding
π
I don't even have that many GL hunts under my belt comparatively (just under 50 vs 100+ with GS and CB and nearly 200 with swaxe) but I'd say it's already my second most comfortable weapon
yeah, I remember giving it a try in Wilds, definitely was just kinda mashing into wyrmstake full blast and wyvernfire but it was quite comfy on lower difficulty monsters
want to properly learn it someday
Wyrmstake full blast is fun, but I'm finding I'm getting a lot more mileage out of full burst and the basic poke/shell combo
Full burst especially because you can do it out of the forward running slam, so it's a really good repositioning follow-up
The one big problem I've run into is AT Nu Udra; that big fire explosion is unblockable by default and really hard to evade with the GL's lower mobility
Desire sensor strikes again
so so real
π

yeah, I have to learn the basics
the only thing I learned when I was playing it was memorizing the 4 or 5 ways to get into full blast π
Lol
I don't know how to full burst but I can guess how to poke/shell
As a rule of thumb I'd say poke/shell for quick poking, full burst for small openings, full blast/wyvernfire for large openings
Full burst is just shell after a downward slam
You need a full clip to get max damage out of it, but it does a lot of damage

I will add, my playstyle is very much oriented around being a Wide type junkie. Constant booms
G.Arkveld GL my beloved, I will never leave you
Oh, the other fun thing about full burst is that it's one of your follow-up options out of a perfect guard, so there's that as well
stylin just a little
skyward thrust is really fun, especially if it's a vertically thick monster πββοΈ
This will effect the local astalos population
π
I think tempered lagi got slightly buffed
And that has caused
Everyone
To no longer possess braincells fighting him I fucking guess lmao
Have people ever had braincells when fighting Lagi π
I say as if I myself haven't run face first into its lightning burst on multiple occasions
We were doing just fine, nobody had fainted
Everyone else charged his ass when he was charging underwater
I
I don't get it
My flabbers were gasted
It's the primal Smack Monster instinct
what determines when he comes out of the water
Passing or failing the DPS check, I think
Either you do enough damage to him or you time out and he does his giant lightning nova
noteddd
i feel so clumsy in that stage
also, what determines if you bring it up the spikes at the end?
Luck of positioning, as far as I've ever been able to tell?
When does one unlock Lagi?
Erik has a quest that unlocks it, I don't remember what the HR requirement is
HR31 is the minimum but you have to complete two other quests first
I think you can't actually unlock it yourself until you're HR35 because it requires the apex runback
It looks like you have to beat the Gore Magala story quest and the sidequest where you capture a Doshaguma for Erik
so the strat for underwater is to stay close to him and spam the claw weapon attacks
you can get through it really quickly
I did nadia's quest today
man that is a buffed up gore lol hes goin crazy
but for some reason it gives you 5 commission tickets which are the first I've gotten bc my boat luck has been dreadful
so I could finally make my beloved jawblade :)
yeah I was not expecting it at all
jawblade :)

holy moly
i currently have a kushala 3 with 4 1 slots
if I switch my chaotic gore legs to gaismagorm legs I might need this 2nd level of berserk, although I'll have to find somewhere else to slot my Rapid Up 4
freakin serpents man
get outta here you whimsical ass guys
floating around n stuff
also when finding that picture earlier of the jawblade I saw this and was like dang maybe I should do more sunbreak
shell yeah
is that the guild LS
...wasn't anything even vaguely resembling my sunbreak/rise main fit/weapon, but it was the only one i could find off hand.
Time to take on The Rompest Popolo
I need that sword irl
its neat
i wish it was also a GS
shell yeahhh
blue mizu...
huh
that was.. not as tough as I feared
hinoa and minoto definitely helped, but so did a shield lmao
poke poke poke
are you anime

your character
honse
jesus fucking christ that sure is how you buff Rompopolo
also people somehow joined me even though I didn't use a flare
which is. annoying.
as a Rompopolo Enjoyer i am scared
Rompo is fun
I dont love aoes
Just dodge
get out of the a then
I intentionally made sure it was off beforehand because I was grinding with randos last night π
I checked after and it was definitely off, and I never even had time to fire one even if I somehow fumbled the shortcut
oop sorry for the ping

Monster Hunter Wilds frame data and hit detection have been some of the most fun to look into. Uth Duna, Arkveld, Rathalos- the whole gang has been surprising!

very neat video
FINALLY
on the hunt where i forgot to use the provision division too
i had no heals left
I'm just getting started with High Rank on a new Wilds playthrough since the graphics patches have made it much better looking and enjoyable, and I am once again reminded that a) I love the new monster designs so much and b) man they really fumbled Mizu's theme in this game (relative to Rise)
the new monsties and new armour are very good yeah
it's got a lot of sauce for sure
Rey Dau is definitely up there for me too honestly, it unseated Bazel as my favourite flying Wyvern by far
But even some of the cheap and cheerful monsters in wilds like Quematrice and Hirabami have such cool designs
There's not a single new monster I wouldn't be happy to see come back
Balahara is easily the best version of "sand/ground swimmer" they've done so far imo
You can definitely tell their design ethos has changed with the new graphical capacity they have, lots of little details and subtle elements, but I think it's not jarring with the updated older monsters
Also really like Rompo
Yeah, Rompo feels like they have the makings of a low level staple
They also future proofed them by saying that a) they exist in the rest of the monster hunter world and b) usually they live in normal wetlands
Honestly that feeling is a huge part of MH's appeal for me, the catharsis of finally getting the quest completed screen is exquisite
love how Alma immediately recognized it once it showed its face. this thing is a known creature that the guild has studied for years, its just that the thriving population in the eastlands lives in a goddamn oil spill
excellent work, did you do it solo or with support hunters
With Shadow and two other randoms
the randoms where the bane of us most of the time
others it was the connection just quitting on us
the support hunters are very competent
would probably recommend them over randoms
also bc they dont take carts off you
depend entirety on the quality of the player, support hunters do less damage in exchange for not carting
Hehehe
I ran a dnd session set in the mh world
My players fought a Daimyo Hermitaur
!!
took it down without followers
although 2 carts
liking lance a lot
it's like lies of p..
there was a bit of a preamble for finding it, but after they found the big crab, it was just direct combat
What system?
oh! D&D 5e
π
You need to achieve a state of detached zen so the desire sensor can't detect your earthly desires
ok fuck me I got 1
i'm not prepared to stake this out as a hill i'm willing to die on, but a thought i had during Omega was "wow, this is fun to fight and miserable to farm"
Gog i can see existing in that same space, though fortunately i've not had to farm him heavily
there's a lot of back and forth about these big, elaborate, mechanics-heavy setpiece hunts, i wonder if some of it isn't down to the disconnect between "wow, fun fight! i was sweating the whole time!" and "okay, now do it 20 more times so they drop a gem"
...that's not including the gem etc, right? i think that's just for the mutated armaments
yeah the armaments, you require quite a few of those
id say you will farm him more for those than the gem
yeah, i had a bunch of relic tickets sitting around bc i've basically crafted all the artians i want at this point, so i just pitched them into the melder and now i've got Gog spheres for days
yeahhh
the first time connecting the elderbreaker and getting to p3 was cinema, now itβs still cool but not my favourite fight
I donβt really like big setpiece monsters because the level of interactivity is generally lower
though i like gog much more than safi because you fight it more, especially in P2
i still have not gone back to omega after 1 normal clear which might be saying something lol
all I need is materials for the IG and SnS⦠and maybe the armour set
I think that the Wilds set piece bosses are at least significantly better than most previous ones
well Zorah Magdoros is definitely a low bar π
yeah π
I really hope Zorah being a stinker doesn't discourage them from continuing to try
i mean, as Jacquerel said, they took another swing with Wilds; Omega and Gogmazios are both setpiece fights and they're much improved
i'm still not thrilled with the idea of having to farm them, but they're both fun to clear at least once
I still have hope their ability to do better setpiece monsters means dalamadur might be on the horizon
tbh I feel like the way the community talks about setpiece hunts, spectacle hunts, siege hunts, etc, is flawed from a terminology standpoint
a setpiece hunt is a hunt where the monster is primarily just an object in the environment for the purposes of the hunt's mechanics
lao, the mohrans for the sandship phase, zorah, dalamadur
oh, i see what you mean
spectacle hunts compromise but don't outright eliminate the traditional formula
yeah, this is what i was thinking of--what Uno referred to as "hunts with mechanics"
ahtal-ka, the second phase of the mohrans, omega, gogmazios, some others I'm blanking on
then there are siege hunts, which is anything with mounted artillery π
rampages are technically siege hunts
a lot of siege hunts are setpiece hunts, but a few are spectacle hunts
(calvin's dad voice) despite the inclusion of artillery, the gogmazios hunt is a spectacle hunt rather than a siege hunt
LMAO
AHTAL KA MENTIONED
my shitpost hope for the expansion is that they give us Guardian Ahtal-Ka, with the lore that they were used to construct some parts of the Ruins, specifically so we can joke that it's made out of Ahtal-Concrete
DAS CONCRETE BABYYY
idle thought--what about a setpiece hunt where a gigantic monster is getting driven berserk by an infestation of small monster parasites on/in its body, and you have to climb on and clear them out in order to get it to calm down
this was mostly born out of the thought "how could you make Zorah Magdoros more engaging"
zorah but it's infested with clone nerscylla (this makes it sound way worse than the idea actually is but they're the most comparable precedents)
I think it could work as a combination of a timed multihunt and a shifting terrain challenge
the logistics of routing to each monster would be an interesting thing to solve, deciding when and where and how to take out each one, react to the possibility of them pathing and wandering to suboptimal places, choosing to either aggro and kite them or just let them carry out their cycle and reposition somewhere better by the time you've taken care of something else
if this one is in this zone by the ten minute mark it becomes less convenient to access, etc
they could also draw on the old egg quest standby of certain routes being temporarily blocked off (though idk how they'd reconcile this with seikret auto-pathing in a way that doesn't make it pointless to attempt because it'll just make everyone's bird ubers take longer)
god yeah
I should learn to play ultra support
We could group and and play sometime
I ask from time to time if anyone is down to play but no one ever seems too
my playtimes are always super sporadic but I'm hoping to eventually start playing with people I've actually interacted with more often
the serpents in rise are this second one
I am 100% down to fight gog with people
fair warning playing with npcs I normally cart once or twice
I still only have one gem
i'm down to play on weekends where I go home.,., but that's quite sporadic π
honestly am considering bringing my pc to school, only really stopped by the question of desk/under-desk space
second deskfast pippin
what do you weapons do you main ?
not enough room.,.,.
i play lance and as long as i have my lance in my hand i will not go down easily
but I may have room to pop it onto the corner of the desk I suppose
in Wilds, the closest I have to mains is Bow, and I'm picking up Lance too
I'm dropping LS so Bow is the next closest
in wilds I have been playing bow, ls, gs, and horn
currently bow and gs have my most developed setups
oh and sns
I've been doing gog with bow because its an elemental damage machine
I wonder if elemental lance leaping thrust spam is good in wilds
for gog I've been taking LS, but bow sounds fun yeah
are you supposed to use fire for P1 and P2 then dragon for P3?
mostly
if you gloop the oil in p1 and 2 then you can switch to dragon on that part for a bit until it de gloops
but swapping slows things down because you have to fuck around with the bird
yeahh that's what i was thinking
it seems annoying to switch for P1 with melee anyways since it moves around a bunch
π©
yeah I would just keep fire and then move to dragon

dragon in p3 is essential though because its what determines if you all die or not
whether you can hide behind a shield for the nuke is determined by how much dragon damage you do to him
but he also cant die for the entire like 2 minute sequence
so its possible to do enough damage to kill him but not to stop the nuke killing you which I have done twice and feels kind of bullshit
you cart and then come back and hit him once and he dies
yeah π
its also crazy that you need his gem for 2 of his armor pieces bc he does not drop that shit
yeah idk if i have one
maybe i've gotten one if it's for the waist
but grahhh
at least you don't need it for the weapons!!!
yeah thank god
I get more of Gogs rare stuff than Seregios Dissenters
I must have killed over 30 of 'em and have ONE
trick for steve is do duo investigations
mutual hostility is such a good enraged skill name,.,
agitator makes it sound like you get stronger by ragebaiting them π
whyβs that :o
lots of drops from quest reward
ah gotcha
i will take down double 9* steve one day
i have trouble landing my perfect guard counters against it though
maybe i can rely on the counter guard double thrust GP instead
itβs faster
I think with my armor so ascended they'll stop oneshotting me at least
New quests kind of print upgrade materials handily
the 10*s?
And the Mizu/Triple Chicken
well something gave me a ton of them, wuh
I'd exhausted them last I played and after a few missions I had multiple levels worth
Maybe I was just lucking out in general
I think you maybe misread
the neat thing about investigations is that you can get a guaranteed gem as a reward
if you get lucky enough to find one that has that listed yeah
allot of rest or luck with sos beacons
ye
Now I'm sitting here trying to figure out where i got all those damn spheres, we mostly did the event quests for unique gear I missed and the 10s
probably just from doing high star quests
amazing
π
you have not just earned the title of hunter or hero
you have earned the title of master
@oroi_03
he cut da bread
does a damn good job too
this is excellent
now we just need a toaster π¦
By JoCat
Very nice
I love you Dodogama, I love you JoCat
I'm so torn on Dodo returning
because on one hand, oh my god I love Dodogama
but on the other hand, I do not want to hurt Dodogama
Definitely one of those 'do we need to do this?' kind of monsties, just wants to eat lava
i dont think it even CAN fuck up the ecosystem
it literally just eats random rocks from the ground
it could maybe provide meaningful competition to the guardians over wylk
Wylk-juiced Dodogama that's like three times the size and way more dangerous would be pretty funny
I was actually thinking about options for more guardians in the expansion and one I've realized makes perfect sense is actually Tetsucabra
Since it's basically an organic bulldozer
Arch-Tempered Dodogama
if Dodo does return, I'd really love it just being a situation of "uhh yeah these things aren't even remotely dangerous, we have no reason to hunt them, please leave them alone" and they occasionally turf war and do nonsense to our benefit
oh hell yeah
I would be very happy if there was a dodogama just like chillin in the master rank village
absolutely don't expect it to actually happen. but I don't need to hunt him I just like his silly face
Dodo, my bloved
i mean if tetsu was seen in Rise as a baby in the gathering hall and nowhere else
it COULD happen
he happily agrees to eat cement every day
REAL
With little wings to do a ground slam from on high
the heart colours are the sharpness levels π
What are folks' pitches for a new Cephalopod for Wilds expansion? They could do almost anything; Nu Nudra, besides being on fire, is pretty traditional but Xu Wu is so weird it really opens the field. So I'm really curious about what they end up doing with them
Another Cephalopod Apex feels like it might be too much, but damn they're so flashy as it is
need a low tier cephalopod like lala barina was for spiders
hard to guess without knowing the environment, a snow/mud/oil/bones lurker that you have to persuade to get out of the ground could work
Thank you Gaudium for the amazing thumbnail: https://twitter.com/Gaudium017
oh my god π
this is frying me
amazing
fortunately this makes bow overtuned while in the fps sweet spot rather than nerfed everywhere else
because its performance without the fps thing is already very strong
so you can ignore it as a non speedrunner
the video focuses on bow, you get more ticks on pierce bow at different fps
2 -> 3 ticks per arrow on the training dummy at around 38-40 fps
πββοΈ
ye I watched it
oh my god
i can't even reach 40 fps though so it's out of my hands π
it's just so funny that I'm all like βοΈ when seeing the video, and then the bowgun player is posted up in the comments with optimal FPS for each shot type
π
yeah thats a real bowgun moment tbh
i love it
they make up for not having a moveset by adding a ton of mechanical setup stuff
except in rise where they do have a moveset
i like the switch skill where you become titanfall devotion
ramping up the fire rate
This keeps happening and modders keep fixing the exact same problem that causes it
gotta love randomly finding out that my preferred weapon deals more damage at exactly my preffered FPS lol
π
let me in...
I think there was an issue similar to this in GU
Bows that fired multiple arrows at once were less powerful than they should have been because the game couldn't register every arrow hit at the framerate GU ran at
[Reply to:](#1164963928531533855 message) the video focuses on bow, you get more ticks on pierce bow at different fps
2 -> 3 ticks per arrow β¦
oh yesss i remember reading about that
no i think its just the rainbow
wait
...
TIL sharpness is measured by the rainbow
red > orange > yellow > green > blue > purple > white
ya
after white comes the color of the sky :)
except purple comes after white in monhun
purple is the special master rank one
at least in world and I think rise
in wilds it goes red orange yellow green blue white
ohhhhhhh
found it!

I do wonder if Wilds will finally run decently on my machine
Could not run when it launched but I hear it's got lots of optimization
Outside of weird edge cases it's much better

hip hip hooray
Dreamspell's music always gets stuck in my head super hard π
i have great skill with the charge blade, the long sword, and the switch axe. now, it is time for a foray into something new and strange. The Bow
dont forget to cap your framerate
yeah bow is very good out of the box
wrong channel woopsies
Messing with Gunlance in 4U, it's fun
Though not being able to hop forwards is messing with me a bit
the forward hop and the backwards roll, two of MonHun's biggest pieces of game-changing tech
for real
π
πββοΈ
maybe i will finish witcher 2 someday
i played it for 15 hours, binged all the books in a week or two, then forgot to keep playing
witcher 2 despite not being a great game on several levels does have toxic yuri in at least
:O
I think its just on the scoia'tael path?
dont quote me on that
if you didnt know the game basically has two very different second halves depending on who you side with when leaving the first town
that does ring a bell
i'm feeling tempted to play worlddd π arghh ... I'm having a ton of fun with rise and don't have that much free time to split, but there's some fights I still haven't done, and the hit sfx are so nice π π
this is my curse
woe, infinite MonHun upon ye
NOOOO
rise it first

i will restrain myself..!
also yeah i don't really have time for world atm since a lot of my next goals are charms
which is grinding lands,.,.
and then Alatreon and Fatty
Just used all of our good luck for the rest of our life
π
Brachy kinda got pushed out of the top 20 cause of Narwa and Ibushi, and Daimyo Hernatuar
ooh where is this made
That's what I think
gotcha
Everyone hates us for throwing shade at brachy
i think it's ok, i didn't realize it was that liked
idk what other people like tbh
as in general community consensus
fit check
I have been making a lot of fits just not posting them
I am also back in lagi hell atm bc the azure age stuff needs his gems
so decided to try hammer for the first time to shake things up a bit
its actually very dynamic
Our current fit
very colours
the mizu mask is a mod bc I became quite attached to it in rise
hammer is really fun yeah
good fits all around π
what LS is that?
watch out! you are standing in wet cement
Gale Scimtar+
too late. im stuck
its the izuchi ls
gaismagorm?
β¦people like brachydios?
yeah
it's a decently popular monster
fun fight, neat music, raging is epic, yadda yadda yadda thats what what everyone says
I am not a brachy fan
it gives you an annoying debuff and makes aoes everywhere
and it looks kinda goofy
i like vaal hazak for those reasons
cool looking weapons though
I dont really like aoe spam in monster hunter
rise had a lot of it
and i understand that feeling
but i like it because i play too many bullet hells and that carries over
rise at least has good defensive options, but yeah brachy and vaal are not my favourite
i dropped world 3 times because of raging brachy, and only ended up progressing because I got an antiblast 4 and cheated in an antiblast 1 to fight it
yeah since rise leans quite character action-y with hunters you have a lot of tools to work around all the aoes
and ofc the 2nd one I beat gave me an antiblast 1
πββοΈ
but world does not give you those tools
and then puts raging brachy in front of you like good luck nerd
I wouldn't have done him solo I dont think
yea :( itβs quite large and the puddles are too
i would not have without blastblight res 3
considering the vitrol we got when we posted it elsewhere
i appreciate the explosive boxer vibe but the fight is mid for me
one of the fights where breaking parts feels the most impactful though
mostly because the puddles are so annoying lol
heck, Granagolm is awesome
Brachy has the benefits of being a flashship and easily meme-able
garangolm is awesome yeah
i freaking love brachy
i have a lot of nostalgia for it bc it was the first time i hit a wall and realized i had to prepare for a hunt

and its one of the first monsters i couldn't just clutch claw counter for free
Don't hate hate it but it's degraded in rank from my end of world
It's fun, but also there are cooler fights
My iceborne wall was Barrioth, and then it was smooth sailing from there on
Personally my one gripe with Brachy is his world fight since the game loves throwing invasion monsters in the Elder's Recess
Savage Jho, Seething, Banbaro
all of them make the game suck to play with Brachy around
Also, new headcanon: Azure Rathalos/Pink Rathian are the transgendered forms of the opposite base monster
naptime :)
...can you get a Legiana in any of the tamer games? Because Legiana is probably my favorite monster (with Odogaron in second, I think) and it's also both very new and very aestetically tied to an extremely specific location although the Shrieking variant actually isn't in that location so I guess it's fine elsewhere.
Unfortunately I haven't played enough MH games to have very many opinions (only base-game Worlds) but the "personal beef with" is probably Diablos (maybe Jyuratodus just from the time spent farming it).
I'd be amazed if you can't get Legiana in 3
diablos is so valid
Legiana is in stories 2!
I just have bad memories of farming Diablos for ice insect glaives and repeatedly getting hit by a charging hitbox which is noticeably taller than it looks like (which is something you only notice on insect glaive). Honestly Diablos just seems like an insect glaive counter between the too-tall charging hitbox and the armored back...
ours:
nice
diablos murdered me until i used a weapon with a shield π©
Legi is in our top 5 for a reason
I think it's my top 1 if I had to pick, although Odogaron is definitely up there and very fun to fight. I'm trying to remember which others I like...
I got Espinas too
Hm. Paolumu and Radobaan are both just kind of neat? Paolumu was very fun to fight with insect glaive and much less fun to fight with dual blades, I remember. But also just... neat and interesting. And Radobaan I cannot explain other than it just being funny.
I do sometimes mentally refer to Radobaan as Autobahn though.
it's a common nickname for both of them
fair enough.
...I also have a very specific gripe which approximately 90% of players will not have, which is that I struggle to tell apart Rathian and Rathalos unless they're next to each other because while they are color-coded green and red, I am slightly red-green colorblind and they look very similar to me.
π yeah that happens with red-green colorblind players
The greatest distinctions are their tails and the spikes on their wings
yeah I just always forget about those. (Also I have not played Worlds in a while so I'm kind of working from memory.)
and Rathian has the long chinspike
fun fact they use the chinspike to feed their young
Pink Rathian was also kind of annoying, I remember? Its tail was armored unless you stood at the very tip (which left you more vulnerable) and it loves hip-checking you.
...how? Do they like... impale stuff on it?
Does it secrete a "milk" of some kind?
produces something vaguely analogous to milk
Ah, huh.
I think it might be a denatured poison or something
I mean, it would not be unheard of to have a substance which is venomous when injected but not when ingested. It would be kind of inefficient, but I could see that sort of venom delivery being evolutionarily hijacked.
let us use rathian venom as a cooking ingredient
It could just be venomous to other species
I mean, it is a venom, not necessarily a poison.
I feel like I remember something about the young needing to be exposed to it to build immunity
Also I'm hesitant to call it a venom because they're capable of producing it in ways that aren't characteristic of venom
Poison then?
I always thought that venoms are toxic when injected and poisons are toxic when ingested and that was the distinguishing characteristic.
Also TIL that Pukei Pukei is just Bird Wyvern Rathian
they produce it in their mouths, their claws, and their tails
I think Dreadqueen functionally sweats it?
Forbidden bath water
That's unusual but not unheard of? The sweating is more characteristic of poisons, though.
forbidden bathwater πββοΈ
usually as a "don't touch me" think like poison dart frogs.
Ye
turns out fighting alatreon a few dozen times in world means i kinda get it a bit more in old gen
definitely not 1 to 1 but some moves are recognizable
not being flashable when it has aura is really annoying though π

please land. please. you're not azure rathalos. please land.
I think I vaguely remember Kushala Daora being annoying? Or... actually, you know what stands out as annoying to me? Shamos. Their entire goal in life is just to piss you off and waste your time.
Shamos very much have the small monster spirit
Kushala is a motherfucker in World specifically
yeahhh i was just about to say I don't mind it in rise
Rise brought it back in line
Kushala generates a no play zone
the tornados on top of the more realistic (but less maneuverable) environments of elder's recess make it kinda horrid sometimes
especially in its nest
ohhhhh my gosh
I hope we get Rusty in Wilds
Now that we know it gets weakened by poison we might grab a bowgun and go back in
Kushala's nest in World is the most miserable fuckzone I've ever seen in this franchise π

I just remember one monster that chained three staggers together but I can't remember which staggers those were. It's plausible it was Kushala Daora but it might have been something else.
The ol' "don't get hit"
oh the misery
every wind tornado is my enemy.,.,
the cutscene with the tornadoes turning the Elder's Recess crystals into a deadly storm was really hype though
This is weird but I think I remember really liking Anjanath too? It's very effectively set up as your first "big" fight, and when you actually do that, it lives up to the hype without being that hard.
Anjanath is a really strong early game hunt
...oh, actually, I have a potentially-controversial take for "love the concept but not the execution": Zorah Magdaros.
my favourite of the World 3 elder cutscenes, probably because it's most real-life adjacent
very much felt
Zorah Magdaros is such an interesting and fun concept. It's the logical extension of the new monster-mounting mechanics to their utmost by making a monster big enough to serve as an entire level, and it plays with the cannon and ballista mechanics in interesting ways for the first phase. But in practice, while the cannon phase is kind of fun it's not particularly difficult or unique, and then once you're on its back you're fighting against rocks. With a single, slightly janky attack. But mostly you just stand there and punch rocks.
And the most dynamic part of the fight has you fighting an entirely different monster and in a simplified form.
What if Jhen Mohran made you walk around way more and had less of a gameplay loop
That's not even the worst part, the worst part is waiting on it's back for 10 minutes after you've done everything else to do on there
and then had extremely poorly timed scripting that couldn't accommodate doing it quickly
Another sort of love-hate one: Kirin.
I'm gonna turn that fucking horse into glue
Kirin really really feels like an Elder Dragon. The ways in which it fights are just so fundamentally different from how everything else works. It's much smaller than other monsters, and unlike... uh, basically everything else I can think of... it doesn't really use its body to fight. It's a mage. And that is a really interesting concept for a fight that's supposed to be a bizarre outlier. It really feels like you're playing a different game.
I like that. What I do not like is having most of my attacks bounce while it has a charged mane. Or the fact that it does so much damage, exacerbated by my bad greedy habit of wearing Legiana armor for extra rewards by default (which is weak to lightning).
I love how much contempt Kirin can exude
The thing about Kirin is that if you just describe it to someone unfamiliar with Monster Hunter it does not feel like it should be an Elder Dragon. But if you actually fight it, it absolutely feels strange and inexplicable and a little bit magical. It's playing by different rules.
lightning unicorn :)
Sent that MFer back to MLP
I love how it's one of the poster children for "elder dragon" being a trash taxon where they put anything that doesn't fit anywhere else
though I'd love to see a completely trivial elder dragon that's only there by technicality
But at the same time, like... it really does not fit anywhere else.
we need more Elder Dragons like Kirin
like hey we found a gecko with six limbs
or Yama Tsukami
I love you Yama
fucked up that it just Has Teeth like that
Fatty
Fatalis is the definitional opposite of trivial π
six limbs and an endoskeleton is one of the most common qualifiers
think I'm gonna hop on rise now π
all this monstie talk has got me wanting to hunt..
π
I just remembered my idea for two different Monster Hunter maps: the Skywood and the Darkwood. They're both the same jungle, composed of enormous trees, but the Skywood's "ground" is actually the canopy of the forest, and the Darkwood is the area beneath the enormous canopy, shrouded in eternal shadow by the branches and leaves above. Everything that lives there is strangely adapted to the almost lightless environment.
Possibly, or possibly an arboreal variant. ...I have never fought Khezu but now I'm imagining it biting a branch overhead and swinging towards you.
it can stick to cave ceilings π π
(This is AOE DOT)
ever see a place and go "Yep, that's a boss arena"
π
The other idea I had was something like... Radobaan meets Pukei-Pukei? It's a rolling wyvern with odd hooks on its back which can roll through various different plants to cover its shell with them, gaining various useful effects. Like, if it rolls through smokepuffs, it'll leave behind a trail of spores as it rolls. If it rolls in blastnuts, it'll scatter explosive projectiles while it's rolling. That sort of thing.
red khezu is red because it went outside and got a sunburn π

Maybe a piscine wyvern that can swim through leaf litter?
I also feel like there has to be something down there with a bioluminescent lure.
lure that's a shiny mining node in the forest π nothing suspicious at all
...no, the lure doesn't look like a mining node. It's bulbous and green and looks almost identical to a vigorwasp.
Or at least to their bloated green abdomen.
Note that there are also vigorwasps with big bulbous glowing green abdomens in the Darkwood.

that's evil π
and amazing
running in panic towards the juicy vigorwasp with rathalos hot on your tail..,,
The ideal is that you can tell the fakes from the real ones from a distance, but it's difficult.
and, yes, it does jiggle the lure up and down just like how a vigorwisp bobs around with its idle animation.
10/10
I can also imagine it using its lure as a flail as it, effectively, headbangs at you. Because Monster Hunter deserves a little goofiness.
Quadrupedal fish cat
catfish with gobul's rig...
...I wonder if there should be a button to shutter the scoutfly lantern specifically for stealh purposes specifically specifically in the Darkwood.
They also have a specialized organ in their mouth for imitating the buzz of a vigorwasp.
I'm honestly kind of surprised there aren't any monsters in World that can use Vigorwasps, what with the whole "interaction between monsters and the environment" theme. Logically, it seems like some smarter monsters (mostly raptorial bird wyverns) would figure it out. And if that was the case, a vigorwasp mimic would lure in not just any prey, but especially often prey that's already injured...
...do screamers do anything besides aggroing/stunning Exactly Diablos?
I guess they get monster's attention?
Do you mean Screamer pods or the flying wyverns you can piss off in the Wildspire Wastes?
Screamer pods, which are made from the wildspire wastes wyverns.
If a monster is borrowing underground they force the monster to surface and leaves them vulnerable for a few seconds
The obvious thing to do would be to have a blind monster that ignores flashbombs but is stunned by screamers instead, but that just feels kind of lazy to have screamers be "the alternate flashbombs which you have to use for a few special monsters". But currently they're that for one monster...
Are there any burrowing monsters other than Diablos that you can do this to?
In World? Admittedly blanking on more than Diablos
Can you screamer pod Jyuratodus? I had no idea. I usually waited for it to surface. (And that's another one which I disliked just due to having to farm it a lot, but it's objectively a fine fight.)
You may be able to
yeah you can
you can knock all the swimmy bois out of their swimmy mode
although some of them might be flash bombs
IT HAPPENED AGAIN?!
Also best girl
hey so is wilds failing to launch for anyone else orrrrr
did you ever have REframework installed
mod framework that's guaranteed to make the game crash on launch if the game updates without it also updating
test
lost connection lol
If it's on Steam, the first step should be verifying your game files
Console, probably start with reinstalling
mizu lance is quite nice
very poky
already at 18 lance hunts π
i like it quite a bit
especially with instablock
but the followup isn't always the best to use, I really like measuring what windows you have for attacking
although Instablock is kinda like absorbing an attack with Valor Sheathe, in that you're invincible until the animation ends or you interrupt it by attacking/moving
so if you instablock Malzeno's wing thrust and try to press, you'll get hit by the sweep since attacking will end your invincibility
but if you ride out the post-instablock animation, you'll i-frame the sweep and then can do guard dash > leaping thrust or whatever
lance in rise is very fun wish i had the time to play more rise
i quite enjoy the aesthetic of the artian stuff
Gonna HRT then fight Shogun Cenataur
gl
Ceanataur was fun
Can wait to see the pendants for the arch tempered arkveld free challenge
Im going to get a A rank
With all my might
Might try to duo, it 50% more hp by double the damage
oh you actually get stuff for doing free challenges?
All the challenges that are temporary, free or not
I don't think I've ever been active while there has been a free challenge on
You get 1 pendant for participating, another for getting B rank and another for A, all looking different and cooler than the one before, but this is subject to personal preference
There have been challenges that weren't free that gave them
They gave you a loadout and told you good luck
Only the challenges where you have to fight a arch tempered monster where free challenges in fact
I missed like 3 challenges and i regret not participating
I have A rank of every other
I haven't done any of the limited time stuff that hasnt come back this past few weeks
I played a bit on launch and then picked it back up once the performance got fixed
The next temp free challenge is coming in like 2 weeks
is that the arkveld one
Yup, arch tempered at that
oh dont worry I'm at 200 something
Im 209 or something lol
i remember getting carried through the AT Rey Dau and Nu Udra ones π
In love uth duna with lance
we did at rey dau together
this is true!
but back when the time attack first released i was in quite mediocre gear
icic
i soloed it in about 25 mins but you need sub 13? for A rank
Got around to doing Aurora Sommacanth
Auroracanth :)
Other than that and Shogun, no new monsters today
Shogun!!!
I love the crabs a lot
Need to get working on a mass upgrades
Gonna hop back on and get working on follower quests
oh yeah, also hit HR69
nice
nice
Why does Basarios suck so much
hes stinky
he's trying his best, he's only baby
thats true it is literally a baby gravios
i look forward to skyward thrusting basarios
my SHARPNESS
googbye sharp
astalos has kinda poopy hitzones if it's not charged so my master's touch isn't always working
i suppose I should hit the head more
very good hunt though (other than dying once), I was doing consistent damage
gj
12:26 astalos, a couple mins faster than last time and at a higher anomaly level
not dying probably helped with the time
the absolute time is a bit deflated because I have a mod to spawn a rainbow bird at the beginning, but the improvement is there
rainbow bird mod my beloved
idk what they thought they were cooking with spiribirds but they are not it
yeah... not my favourite mechanic
it's like if Health Boost was scattered around the map instead of being a skill, and also for the other stats
and then idk what state of birdedness is being balanced for, probably somewhere in the middle
I can tell what they thought they were cooking (deferring the ability to buff yourself to map characteristics and allowing for players to more easily divert from, adapt for, and return to a hunt that proved too challenging), but unfortunately they weren't even in the same ballpark with their execution
I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually pans out to the ability to acquire food skills or even temporary armor skills in the field, if the fact that everyone Fucking Despises Spiritbirds doesn't turn them off from the entire concept
I feel like it's probably not gonna be a thing in mainline games at least
maybe the next portable but who knows
I really think they need to stop experimenting with deferring preparation to any point of the gameplay loop other than "before the hunt"
but I'm also one of those freaks who thinks that so much as Having Access To Your Box On A Hunt should require a manual expenditure of resources at the start of any hunt you want it for (and imo you should need to spend the resources and then deposit a selection of items you want possible future access to that will be lost if you cart out)
I agree I think the delineation of prep and then hunting is good
I dont mind the tracking in world because it ties in well to hunting the monster instead of being a side thing you go do for buffs or whatever
Tracking my beloved
like its part of navigating the environment and heading towards the monster which you would be doing anyway. they just made it more engaging
I'm a little sad wilds doesnt have tracking but I think a decent amount of people disliked it
what's surprising to me is that people who started with World are some of the strongest proponents I've seen
as someone who started with world. I love it
I've played world rise and wilds for quite a few hours each and I like all of them for different reasons
I think it's cool that they're all fairly distinct
while still being very like, mutually intelligible
to make an obvious comparison, its like the dark souls series
the only thing stopping me from playing older games is I play on keyboard and mouse and I'm a bit scared of the older game clunk + being no good with controller
I wish they'd port some of them but japanese publishers arent big on pc gaming
if you have a controller with two analog sticks you're genuinely better off than most of the games on their original consoles
Oh I misread
yeah I have 4U on my 3DS but I haven't played it
Good news on the ports front: Capcom recently announced that they're going to start giving a shit about PC because it now makes up half of their sales!
haha finally
japan has been super slow to get on the pc gaming train but I'm glad they're finally coming around to it
rise wasn't originally planned to get a pc port but they saw such demand for it that they changed their minds late in development
part of why it came out like a year after the base game
They've been very good at listening to and responding to demand, and it's part of the reason why we kept getting western releases at all
today i learned the VE stands for Veggie Elder
I remember hearing about trading in a youtube video, but didn't realize it was still in GU
π
and ofc I didn't bother searching through the 1700 items in my box to read the description

it's quite cool that the monster rares you can trade for are monsters that are associated with the map you trade in!
like the maps where the fated four first appear in their village quests, seregios for the Dunes, valstrax for the Ruined Pinnacle
also wow there are 15 maps in this game
I never really thought about counting em
veggie elder in wilds dlc
I want as many weird lil guys in my monster hunter as possible
More weird little guys!!!
I loved the baby tetsucabra in rise
and obviously you have poogie and all the palicos with various kinds of goblin energy
Tetsucabra please come back to us
they should just put all the monsters in
That would be the ultimate monster hunter game
Covering all the generations
A sort of Generations Ult--[gunshot]
π
the What
in the village hub
say that again?
big boi on a big boi
i said it would be Monster Hunter Generations Ultima--[Wilhelm scream]
I do wonder if another Generations-style entry is even feasible given their increased scope
hmm i think the mod that messes with guiding lands gathering node drop rates messed up something with fuel items
that zinogre event quest is giving me monster bone S lol
but eh, I'll stick to rise for now
trying to make builds in World is gonna take time..,. and there's not too much variety in vanilla endgame sets
yeah
I don't think it scales earlier MR monsters up either
they're kinda pushovers
Honestly I'm really hoping the Wilds expansion brings some kind of system to incentivize long endurance hunts in the field, especially with environment link
maybe also bring back Guild Quests
i've still got it! :D
the tenderizer rebalance mod is quite nice
i tenderized 1 or 2 times that fight
but not much different from normal tbh, the head goes from 85 > 88 and arms go from 60 > 70, and you're always hitting there anyways
16% is still a lot of damage but you at least get wex even on vanilla without tenderizing
very satisfying fight without clagger and clutch claw to interrupt the flow π
the spiribird thing at least got me to memorize maps
i cannot navigate Wilds maps to save my life
still was bad for the game imo (replying to this thread)
I turned off my minimap and my seikret's ability to auto-path without my direct input and started learning the maps way better π«‘
i should just do that
mambo spotted
this is true, I know some routes and nooks decently well
wirebugs are also a big part of it, you get to move around quickly while still having to do it yourself
Oh, you can turn off the autopilot? I should do that xP
the real reason to not use autopilot is so you can drift on your bird
