Just wasnt a big fan of the new monster designs or the alpha/beta armour system
Still not the biggest fan of it in wilds but given the way skills are setup here its whatever

Well, there used to be that, along with gunner armor

iirc

ranged weapon users (bow and bowguns) could only equip gunner armor, while melee weapon users (the rest) had blademaster armor

gunner armor had a lot less defense, but in exchange, had different skills tailored for gunners

each monster had them, and each of them had different designs

Prior to world: No alpha/beta sets.

Gunner armor was it's own entire thing that you had to build sperately, and had to wear to use Bow and Bowguns.

Addtionallyu, skills were totally different in how they worked.

In World if you have a point in a skill, you have a point in a skill.

IN older games, it was a threshold system. An armor piece might give you attack up 3.

But to get Attack Up S - the first tiero f attack up, you actually needed 10 points in attack up. And then if you had 15 points, you'd get attack up M, and 20 would get you Attack Up L.

...and there were negative versions of every skill to boot, with a complete set ususally activating at least one negative skill.

So it was a huge mess, not very intuitve (I saw a lot of people wearing sets where they had as manyh diferent skill points as posislbe, but no actual thresholds reached), and a huge pain

I think it could have been better if there was a lot more signposting > tutorials about the old skill system. In some ways I prefer it

I kind of enjoy the puzzle building aspect of it, in a way. It also lended itself to there being fewer skills on your armor overall, and those skills were I think by comparison more powerful or impactful compared to their modern counterparts, which is another personal preference of mine

Perosnally, i felt it was mostly complicated for the sake of complciated. it also really demanded you have stuff like a set-builder, and that was ltierally headache inducing for a lot of people.

Thresholds are literally 10/15/20.

If you have 10 in a skill, it activates.

your likely best bet is to grab Dreadking or Silverwind armor and focus on upgrading those, since they have Good Stuff TM

does anyone have tips for improving wilds performance? i’ve been making do with 30 fps upscaled by lossless scaling, my cpu seems to be the bottleneck

i’ve started on a list of fixes i found on reddit but haven’t fully gone through it, it’s mostly stable 30 but with some drops :(

i think that it might have been running better during the beta but i didn’t check exact frames back then

If the CPU is the bottleneck, there's not a lot that's going to fix that for you easily

this might just be me, but it kind of seems like Wilds' armor skills are more focused than World's? like each set has more points in fewer skills rather than scattering them around as much as World did

like i remember LR in World, you were lucky to get 2 points in a skill whereas in Wilds i was able to get up to e.g. max Evade Extender with just a little buildcrafting

part of that is that a number of skills have had levels removed, but still

well, there is the point that a non-elemental artian statistically has a higher chance of getting a "perfect" (i.e. 3-4 attack rolls and 1-2 sharpness rolls) set of reinforcements, since elemental reinforcements aren't in the pool

i don't especially care about that myself, or i would've tossed my CB after i got an affinity roll, but 🤷

my ultimate plan for CB is to get the apex trio (ie Rey Dau, Uth Duna, and Nu Udra) as elemental options but that's gonna take a little bit of time to farm those up

so i just slapped together something to use in the interim so that i can get my brain around how CB works in practice

GS is interesting bc I feel like recent games have really given it a lot of ways to play way more aggressively than the older games (like pre-GU)

GU had Valor, World gave tackle, Rise had surge slash and the alternate charge slash that had super armor (can't remember the name)

and now Wilds lets you go ham with offsets and perfect blocks

i never was especially interested in GS in World because it felt really one-trick with TCS

but Wilds GS feels like it has a pretty good arsenal of tricks in its toolbox

even with Valor, I played it as much for that as for the zoomy slash

draw attack is a little more interesting in Wilds, in that the three-second window means that with Focus 3 you can get a fully charged upswing in after a fully charged draw attack

If you're willing to craft gunner armor Valor Heavy Bowgun is peak. For Blademaster stuff Valor GS and Striker SnS are awesome. Charge Blade is awesome (Aerial, Striker, Adept, Valor are all great and play very differently)

Try out Valor Hammer it's awesome. Striker hammer isn't great I'd recommend just sticking with guild if you don't wanna run Valor. Adept is cool but positioning for the charge followup is difficult

Ohhhh, yeah. Wilds has "squads", which are kind of like guilds, I guess? They're groups of people that make it easier to find each other for multiplayer

Yeah, subquest is primarily there as a bail out option in case you're after something other than the main rewards

and there was a conversation in here a while ago interpreting dragon element as trophic concentration of bioenergy, which i thought was super neat and really changed how i looked at the element as an element of the worldbuilding

basically the idea is that environmental elements get more concentrated the further you go up the food chain, like a particular chemical that's present in trace amounts in plants is present in higher concentration in herbivores that eat those plants, and higher still in carnivores that eat those herbivores

Just to expand, this is why in real life we don't eat apex predators, and they generally taste disgusting when people try - because bioaccumulation means they actually pick up all the heavy metals and other toxins in surprisingly high quantities

(also trophic levels is the correct term - like all the way at the bottom, you have the really simple convert sunlight/geothermal heat to energy single cell creatures, then you start having plant life & the things that feed on those single cell creatures, so on and do forth

This is a very simplified take on things

It's a really cool theory because it even explains why dragon element monsters tend to also be weakest to Dragon as well. They're already almost at bioenergy capacity and so the excess hits them particularly hard
