GU's glavenus is legitimately my favorite fight in the entire franchise.
...well "GU" rather than "Gen" only applies to G rank, but still.
it's a wonderful mix of scary, but fair, with a varied moves et, capabilities at both range and and melee, moves that are devastating but reasonably telegraphed, at that specific point in monhun's development where the motions feel more natural rather than the old "flying wyvern that turns around a few times and then tramples you"...
oddly graceful for the sheer size of the thing, but once you learn the moveset, it does have massive rewards for fighting the thing "well"
has very clear "modes" in which it leans towards either long distance attacks or close up...
...also features some rather clever mix-ups between ranged and melee even, with a specific ranged into melee "combo" that's rather effective both in and out of universe...

they kinda fall off in G rank due to not scaling numerically as hard as hunters, but boomerang builds are really good through high rank
gu was kind of a mixed bag for them because on the one hand, the different categories each got really neat tools to help distinguish them from each other but also monster health just gets really high in late g rank...
...they are rather hard to actually kill though, so it might be "easier" in that sense.

But yeah, lance's move set just feels so much more awkward in GU. Raising and lowering the shield takes noticably longer, guard counter feels a lot less reliable, and every style other than striker has a weird triple hit thrust at the end of your standard combo
And not having super guard is just so annoying

i asked my resident lance expert (who likes GU lance more than world) for advice and after a lot of discussion, the actual practical advice I got from him was
- lance's base guard value is high enough in GU due to how guard skills only have 2 levels that using the super guard for raw guard value wouldn't be necessary
- the charged counterpoke barely does any more than the tap counterpoke, so you probably should only use it when you fuck up the timing on the tap counterpoke
- just use striker style, the weird triple thrust means that for lance specifically it just isn't worth it, you barely lose anything, and the benefits of striker style's charge finisher loops make lance actually not dead-last in speed runs in high level play

I mean the best thing about power guard is not that it’s good at guarding but that it lets you cancel out of a poorly time counter thrust and can counter thrust in any direction

it also has switch skills! you can switch your wirebug skills but also some parts of your base moveset
you can change your LS draw attack to be a double slash that has armor and huge damage reduction, and also fills 25%x2 of your gauge on hit
or changing hbg charged shot to a crouching ramp-up mode that disregards clip size

destroyer oil also takes on a quality that chaos oil had in gu and sharpens your weapon a bit (chaos oil applied all oil buffs to your sns at once, but if you then attempted to use another oil on top of it, it stacked higher, though instead of doubling on partbreak power, for destroyer oil it sharpened your weapon)
