#Baldur's Gate 3
1 messages · Page 18 of 1
and then I put wyverntoxin in the brew
I just stabbed him
actually do i refer to the gender of the character or the player in this situation
i feel like the character is more appropriate
since it's them doing the thing
but my friend playing the character is a dude
also it wasn't a cleric, he plays a rogue, i'm the cleric
he played a cleric in our first run so i remembered it wrong
no idea
I mean invis on kill is a nice oon no matter the class
but the knife is pretty much only useful to a rogue
yeah
also the slayer form is basically useless for a sorcerer lmao
default durge is a bum clearly
Baahl isn't the smartest
The game is about how Baahl is 1/3rd of the comedy trio death gods
Either Jergal was very good at his former job, or it takes 3 of their brains to match 1 sensible God.
I could kill Orin basically effortlessly in bg3
the moment she slayer formed
she's got 10 wisdom score as a slayer
and hold monster is a wisdom check
maybe Bhaal is the bum
wel
i say maybe
Bhaal is canonically the bum
bhaal is literally a murderhobo
She has no legendary resistance iirc or of she does it sucks
my GOAT Withers said so
real and true
straight up disappointment of a god
It's funny the original lore was the dead 3 were just dudes and made it to Jergal and was like "we're here to steal godhood from you" and Jergal mocked them saying they wouldn't even get close then just gave his godhood to them for reasons(?)
single upcast of hold monster with any decently oosted spell dc renders her mostly harmless unless she crit succeeds her save
bored
Which, based, the dead 3 as a great bit
Jergal actually just doesn't give a shit
he thought maybe the three bums could do something interesting about it
jergal was just happy to dump his responsibilities to them
clearly he was fucking wrong
yeah
which is why Kelemvor is handling things now
he found their ambitions very boring
he even says so in a scene
idr if i got to see that on my main run but i saw a vid of it on yt
completely roasts them for sucking absolute shit and essentially goes "good riddance"
but yeah Jergal just doesn't want to do his job
which is why he keeps giving his mantle to other people
he's sorta just chilling acting as the Seneschal for other people while they do his job
i kinda respect it ngl
bro got mad bored, foisted his job on the first jackass to try to rob his house, and is sorta just chillin
It'd be fitting, not only did the dead 3 disappoint at their domain, but they disappointed as a funny bit
he did get other people taking up the job after the dead three
since they lost their positions
iirc it's Kelemvor who i mentioned earlier who is doing it rn
But who will the the BBEG of baldurs date 4
Whos the god of murder now
no idea actually
Kelemvor is the god of Death though
think he got all threes domains
considering they all got godhood off of Jergal
i think he is directly doing the same thing as Myrkul though, but better
i adore that Minthara's evil is very goal-oriented; its the kind of evil you can work with in a party
Oh apparently Bhall is still the god of murder
Just very much weakened
Barely even a god
pathetic little loser baby
Myrkul at least got completely deposed
i actually just don't care to find out what happened to Bane
Myrkul never really seemed to have any real goals
Got the stick he was chasing with Godhood and then was just kind of around
yeah
He got godhood and immediately started using it to troll people
he got the boot now anyhow
By appearing at funerals to remind people that THEY WERE NEXT
lmao
nice guy
Must’ve been a real hoot at parties
Anyways faith in the gods is basically enforced pretty strongly
It’s basically the one rule enforced by the top god
Which I don’t know how I feel about
God says that afterlife for the faithless must suck shit because otherwise people wouldn’t believe in the gods
oh yeah forgot to mention but my character is a Selûnite cleric as well as a druid
So all faithless people get literally fed to the wall
yeah that sounds kind of ass
Which presumably didn’t even exist before Myrkul built it
So what’s up with the wall suddenly being so necessary to pressure the faithless
When things were working fine before Myrkul erected it
(Although I suppose in bg3 Jergal mentions that faithless wander the fugue planes for eternity)
Which I guess isn’t as bad but still sucks
Gale was real MVP of act II final boss
Power of a god is no match
For a potion of speed
And spamming fireballs
After drinking a nice potion of necrotic resistance
i think our Paladin was on boss one-shot mode by that point
She's got goals and ambitions, she doesn't need to be weighed down by societal expectations
I thought you were going to say power of a god (absolute) is no match for big boom
5 big booms for Myrkul
Nope, Wall of the Faithless has been removed from the setting
Also, fun fact, this is actually a misconception: in the source material, Myrkul put up the wall in the first place because he sucks, and on his death Kelemvor decided to keep it up because of Extremely Protestant Angst
i do like the idea of Myrkul doing it cause he was shit at his job
Oh he was very good at his job
i think murkul did it out of sadism
He was just, you know, horrible
that also makes sense
The gods of evil brought Kelemvor up on trial before Ao, not over the wall existing but because he was favoring the good and neutral for afterlife purposes (and I think maybe not giving them to the wall, specifically?)
Anyway I'm not sure if it's been retconned out or taken down
no more wall tho
But it's one of the few good lore changes in 5e
Or ... I think it might still be around, but it's specifically for those who betrayed their gods?
It's not where Anyone Who Didn't Worship goes, in any case
Fun fact: the Wall is a TSR edition, Ed Greenwood did not come up with it
it's still canonically up as of 1479
Which makes a ton of sense to be tbh
(Baldur's gate is set in 1490s)
so if it got torn down it must be a pretty recent thing
Yeah, then I think it's that they changed the scope
well no the person who was being threatened with thrown into it is a faithless
not a False
I mainly remember that not every atheist gets sent there
The False become menial workers in the City of Judgment, or worse. According to Withers, the faithless currently just wander the Fugue plane eternally.
good thing i got a god to worship
i think Kharalathri is probably going to the fugue plane tho
my current character is a Selûnite cleric tho
Isn't it post death a god can choose to adopt you basically into their plane if you followed their tenants
Those that choose not to do so, or your pleas doesn't make any deity want to take you , and doesn't choose not to accept the deals of devils try to get peritioners into a contract gets put into the wall
Possibly
Makes me think of when i accidentally worshipped a super evil god in WOTR
Read the fine print actually, it may save you from eternal damnation
Last I read the wiki, they basically make it clear what happens if you don't plead assuming you werent faithful to a deity and the fate of those in the wall, and if somehow you no deity takes you and you don't accept a certain type of devil that wanders trying to turn peritioners into lemures it was very much a choice, which is still iffy morally but probably better than non believers automatically walledb
i forgot how fucking funny the Volo eye scene
He does give us a better eye, so task failed successfully
Which, if you're playing as Wyll which eye does he do?
we managed to somehow kill the spectator
it had our Rogue bleeding out on the ground the entire fight
i somehow got out of the fight with zero damage and also taking the killing blow
I think it just doesn't let you do it as Wyll, same as if you try to have both Ethel and Volo take your eye
(don't let Ethel try it by the way)
I think Warlocks get an invocation to see invisibility though so it's not a big loss
RIP, forever warlock
Noooooo I forgot to talk with Alfira before killing the goblins 😭
Bard is such a fun class to play.
I'm Druid 2, Bard 1 right now.
Did they remove the Stool of Hill Giant Strength?
Oh, I took a mod to give everyone proficiency, that's why I forgot
Oh there it is
Found it
It wasn't until my third playthrough that I figured out you could run into her in act 1.
Somehow I completely missed the path from the grove leading to her and the kid entranced by the harpies (RIP him on my first two playthroughs I guess)
I encountered a bizarre glitch where the colors of everything but the HUD were inverted. I'm spoil it because it is very bright.
Reloading fixed but man.
Evil curse that appears when you have 6 party members instead of 4
honor mode Bullete is crazy
survived some more encounters
it is
rather touch and go basically every time
gods damn it
i wanted to try using Moonlight Glaive since it has radiant damage so i can do radiating orb in melee
but i'm an elf, not a half-elf or human, so i don't get glaive proficiency
that's so annoying
Staff of Spellpower into Markoheshkir it is
Consider: you can grab dual wielder and use two staffs
(This is arguably the single best use of dual wielder)
that's hilarious
That motherfucker
If they didn’t want me to spam hold person as a warlock why is it so powerful
I need my feats for 20 wisdom
I feel like getting the bonuses from a second staff would be more valuable than one ASI at least
I should actually do a caster build some time
doing a Monk on my current play with my partner
The transitional build is something like Paladin 2/Swords Bard 10. I played that one, it's very, very strong.
Take a big sword, go nuts
Hexblade and Bladesinger also gish, bladeslinger leans more on caster side since you've got all the wizard spells.
Paladin is really strong with any caster. Heightened divine smite my beloved.
Paladin 2/Bladesinger 10 is basically even better
Although I like high-charisma characters
And if you're not committed to getting that level 10 feature for bladesinger you get to drop up to 4 levels into Whatever Other Full Caster Classes
Do the bullshit sorcerer 1/cleric 1 start for constitution save proficiency, shield and magic missile, and full weapon and armor proficiency
Does bladesinger get multiple attacks per round?
Yep
Extra attack at 6
Swords bard is the same, it's the reason it was king for paladin 2/caster whatever
But because wizards are bullshit you can be some sort of horrible sorcerer/cleric/bard/druid/wizard/paladin amalgam
I went 6/6 paladin/sorc for mine. Quickened casting+divine smite=fun
Yeah, that's very strong
5th-level slots is all you actually need for maxed smiting
And you get Aura of Defense
Protection?
One of those
I got incredibly lucky during the Avatar of Bhaal fight and got two Divine Smite crits in a single round. The fight did not last very long lmao.
My party was pretty crazy by that point so while I did not get that lucky, I was able to bring her down without killing any of the cultists first
Nice little achievement goes ding
That playthrough was as Durge so I had to duel her.
Oh so she didn't have the invulnerability stacks?
I had to break those down with my monk
I had to look it up to refresh my memory but no, she doesn't get the unstoppable buff if you duel her
But you have to fight her solo and if you go down or make your party intervene you can't get the good ending for Durge
Got it
(Prebuffing is okay though)
Who needs prebuffing when you hit like a boat
Ah but haste makes you hit like a boat more times.
True, true
I just learned something Fun
Did you know that if you use the Arcane Archer's Curving Shot in the Last Light Inn fight, it can and will target Isobel?
"Don't worry Isobel! I won't let the Absolute kill you!"
Just lost the fight because of that
incredible
It was a Sharpshooter Arcane shot too
😔
Solo duel she's pretty weak
She does still get like a thousand attacks per round so she can still fuck you up pretty bad if you get unlucky with her attack rolls.
The best way to take her out in the duel is to not let her get a round.
My durge was a sorcerer and I didn't even do the hold monster tactic I just hasted and disintegrate and blight. I wanted to see what'd happen if I disintegrated her but only had 1 6th level .
My AC wasn't super high but it was like 19 from +2 medium armor + shield
20 cause I would have at least put a +1 shield on my main but many attacks missed
(We reloaded because
well
That's pretty bullshit)
I just chunked her with spammed upcasted divine smites. Though I got really unlucky on my first attempt and got OTKOed by her. Wasn't even an AC issue since I had the Helldusk armor and a shield. RNGesus just decided I didn't get to do the fight on that attempt lmao.
Her attack to hit seems low if you have 20AC, most of them whiff
It's the non durge fight with like her invulnerability per round and the acolytes cc'ing you and prone or buff her is when she's much more dangerous.
Iirc there's 2 to 3 NPCs in that fight that just solely buffs her
Also you need to hit her ten times to do any real damage to her
Which you can do
It's manageable
For some parties
If you don't have one of those you have to start killing priests, in which time she can punch you in the face
Magic missile gets to shine again
It's very strange that sorcerers randomly don't get longstrider
I guess to prevent you from wasting a spell known on it
But it's not really wasted, and bards can
And sorcerers get other ritual spells
Sorcerers are more pure blasters with few utility spells. They didn't get longstrider in 5e either.
I did not learn from my mistake and curved the shot into a nearby child, dealing half his health in damage during a game of hide and seek
I guess ||your arrows serve Bhaal.||
Polearm Clout now properly gains bonuses to its weapon damage from various sources.
Weapons bound using Pact of the Blade or Hexblade now properly use the Charisma modifier for the Polearm Clout attack.
Okay so polearm mastery is good now
welp
we lost fucking Gale
what a dick
my friend was trying to feed him a magic item and he didn't have one so he tried to leave to go get one and Gale got pissed and fucked off
this Honor mode run is going great surely
also thanks to Wyll we have massive negative rep with Alfira
i think my luminous arrow procced the effect of my bow
What is Wylls and Alfiras interaction?
he keeps having cutscenes when we sleep
which stops Alfiras cutscene from happening
we've knocked Alfira unconscious twice and been stopped by Wyll cutscenes
... oh hey High Elves can grab booming blade as their cantrip now
Poor
Alfira. She deserves sooo much better.
bro they need to fire Piddle
what the fuck was he even doing up there
we caused an enormous explosion and i called down an incredibly fucking powerful holy smite of Selûne
he didn't notice anything
Damn that's wild
So as a high elf you can just have booming blade on any martial classes without feat or dip?
Seems that way!
Or a high half-elf I guess
That is
Extremely competitive
I noticed because I was starting an Astarion Origin run
And uh
Booming blade was there
He’s a goblin scholar
Not really a watchman
You can discuss dwarves poetry with him
He intentionally sequestered himself away from the party because he didn’t really like raucous celebratory vibe
So he’s the only goblin in the entire area I left alive
fair enough
we uh
well
we did not
tbf we're murder hobos since we're doing a Durge run
You know on the one hand some shit like Paladin 6/Bard 1-4/Warlock 2-5 seems very fun for hexblade
otoh Fighter 11/Warlock 1 seems really strong
Just for the curse?
Gah. All this talk as me brain storming characters but I really should focus on my embrace the urge run.
I started a solo run in lieu of a multi-player game to try out 4 builds at once
I want to take them from 1 to 12
Yeah, it's really good and it scales to get stronger the more attacks you're making per round
He wouldn't talk to me :(
I poisoned the drinks so he just started talking "Someone's poisoned the drinks! Get him!"
Quite a memorable line from the classics of dwarven poetry
Dwarfs have poison resistance. Adding poison to their drink is like adding chili powder to a cocktail. Adds kick.
Isnt alcohol also considered poison anyway?
Doesnt that mean it takes a lot to get em drunk?
Challenge: assuming you have only the six origin characters to work with, how can you pair them off in the funniest way possible?
I feel like Karlach/Astarion is obligatory, and Lae'zel is funny no matter who of the remaining crew you pair her with, but whatever you get left over from that will be kinda whatever
Astarion Wyll
Astarion/Wyll, Lae'zel/Shart, and honestly Gale/Karlach is pretty funny
My GF and I just took on the honour mode tactician enhanced ||Balthazar|| fight in the most hilarious way possible. ||We held the door to the kitchen and let all the Justiciers spawn while trying to stay out of the fight as much as we could. Meanwhile she snuck through and cracked the lock on his door, drawing him into the fight. In the end he was barely up vs the Crusader and one or two archers, so she snuck back into the room and knifed him in the back to get the kill.|| It took forever but it was incredibly comical to watch and we barely used any resources.
Me holding the line as what felt like twenty ||justiciars|| tried to push through the chokepoint, only for her to ||barely crack the door in time and for them to all immediately turn and rush Balthazar||. The sense of relief was intense.
Did the protecting Halsin fight in Act 2
Wall of Fire continues to make it very easy
Darkness was my mvp
Wall of fire my beloved
Hunger of Hadar and Spirit guardians for me
Same for spirit guardians
Makes the encounter trivial when they die upon getting close
We had Wall of Fire and a Spirit Guardians up
I once did a no magic only might challenge so only no "magic" classes and subclasses so my comp was BM fighter, Thief Rogue, Berserk Barb, and open hand monk. The gate was 3 HP from 0 since I had 0 AoE
Gale with potion of speed and fire evocation specialization
Spamming fireballs
Really does simplify act2 boss
Haste letting you double cast in BG3 is still insane
Spirit Guardians is just amazingly good in almost any situation
Trying to think of a good big sword person plan for Lae'zel
Other than just like ... fighter 11/somethingelse 1
I don't think War Magic lets you use multiple bonus actions for attacks, tragically
giant barbarian for the biggest sword
Doing that with Wyll
PC's probably gonna be Hexblade 2/Rogue 4/Fighter 6 to take advantage of polearm master actually working now
I wish I could Sneak Attack unarmed 😔
(Polearm master works now btw)
(The bonus action attack finally gets damage bonuses)
also in case people here don't know, a funny thing I read about
you can wield a light weapon in your offhand, then equip the main hand weapon on a different character
this empties out your main hand and lets you do unarmed attacks, but you still keep the weapon in your offhand
if you don't already use a mod to enable unarmed all the time
so you can wield stat stick weapons in offhand for the bonuses
I could get one of those actually...
Switched from Bladesinger to a Hexbladelock so I could use the Potent Robe
It's pretty fun
Been pondering some kind of bladesinger/hexblade hybrid but that seems tough to get working
Something silly that is possible is eldritch knight 7/warlock2/whocares 3 to fire off an eldritch blast followed by a bow attack
If you get thief 3, then under haste it's possible to use war magic a second time after your second eldritch blast
Make her a Gish. Like the Gith Wizard/fighter multi that is the term's origin.
Yeah, it'd fit
fighter 5/6, rest wizard; take advantage of all the good protection reactions/buffs?
What I think I've settled on is bladesinger-that-doesn't-care-about-bladesong-and-is-only-here-for-extra-attack, with heavy armor and big sword and so on
hell yeah
... Shadow Sorcerer 1/Light Cleric 9/Star Druid 2 almost feels excessively perfect for Shadowheart, roleplay-wise
Hmmmmmm
Lmao
(There are also numerous smaller mods that turn characters into gnomes or halflings)
I can get behind this. The lack of gnome/halfling party members is downright criminal.
(No, the Withers summons don't count)
On one hand i want to play durge cause it’s a custome character with a backstory... on the other i want to play astariô to be petty
you could remake Astarion's character model as a durge
I have no idea how well they work, but there are mods that merge the Durge Origin with others, including Astarion
There are also things that simply make Astarion's preset accessible under other circumstances, IIRC
ithere opne to change is hair do ?
Not sure, but it's really easy to look
The in-game mod mangager is pretty great
Unrelated: after spending far, far too much time thinking about this, I have a setup for a patch 8 run
Gale: Lore 10/Wizard 2 (Ketheric's Shield, +2 Int +2 Cha) — It feels wrong for him not to be some sort of primary caster to be tbh.
Wyll: Crown 6/Hexblade 1/Fighter 1/Thief 4 (Harmonic Dueller + Infernal Rapier, Savage Attacker + Dual Wielder) — Oath of the Crown makes sense to me for him, uses rapiers, warlock.
Karlach: Giant 6/4 Elements 4/Fighter 2 (Giantslayer, Tavern Brawler + GWM/ASI) — Karlach likes this mix of melee, unarmed, and thrown.
Lae'zel: Bladesinger 8/War Cleric 1/Storm Sorcerer 1/Crown 2 (Silver Sword GWM + Savage Attacker, +1 Int Hair) — Hit hard w/big sword, cast spells, wear heavy armor, fly around. Feels very Lae'zel. Crown laughs at puny GWM attack penalty. Hah! Hah!
Astarion: Battlemaster 6/Rogue 4/Ranger 2 (two light weapons, Savage Attacker +4 Dex) — using a mod that lets me change his cantrip, if not would swap ranger for bladesinger wizard. Booming Blade + Pushing Attack. Probably Orin's knives.
Shadowheart: Light Cleric 9/Star Druid 2/Shadow Sorcerer 1 (+4 Wis) — This almost feels too obvious, right?
Dark Urge: Sorcerer 6/Cleric 6 (Markoheshkir + Woe, Dual Wielder +2 Cha) — hahaha markoheshkir goes brrr. Could imagine switching this to Gale and using his build, to be tbh.
Halsin: Open Palm Monk/Rogue (Gloves of Soul Catching, Tavern Brawler) — Not sure about heavy armor + shield yet, but it is critically important to me that Halsin have big muscles.
Minthara: Swords Bard 10/Fighter 2 (Titanstring, Sharpshooter + 2 Dex) — I can't explain why I find this fitting, but I do.
Jaheira: Swarmkeeper 5/Spore 7 (Staff of Cherished Necromancy + Belm, Dual Wielder +2 Wis) — Druid, uses items from her basement, uses staff.
Minsc: Berserker 5/Thief 4/Champion 3 (Dwarven Thrower w/Disguise Self, Tavern Brawler + 2 Str) — Strength-based, berserker.
Dipping 1 into Fighter is valid for Str Monk
The main reason not to is that you can just use elixirs for your Str and do a regular Dex/Wis build
Shields are good though if you have Prof
Just makes you lose out on movement unfortunately
Yeah, I've done Fighter 1/Monk 8/Rogue 3 before (on Minthara that time, for lulz)
Had a good time
Just want to see if there's a compelling reason not to that I'm not thinking of
I do hate spamming elixirs tho
Really the big thing is Ki Resonance
Which I don't think I'd ever really considered fully before
... it occurs to me that monks can wear Helldusk
Could start with fighter 1 and then spec out of it at endgame
Wouldn't be getting resonance before then, anyway
I'm aiming for Monk 8/Rogue 4 myself currently
not entirely sure yet, but the extra ASI might be better
I think it depends on your itemization
If I get a Wis boost, I can probably end on 22 Wis
And like 18 or 20 Dex
And that +1 Wis will probably be Khalid's amulet
Something to consider: open hand 9 also lets you carry stat-sticks and fight unarmed
Since you can resonance-punch regardless of how you’re equipped, apparently
Doesn't that only work if they don't have resonance yet?
Bah, fuck it, Lae’zel gets to go Hexblade 12 and Durge will snag her build
Gale can have the stupid electricity build
I’m not sure, I was just reading up on this on the wiki
got that shit on
yeah it's sick
i am the glowiest of them all
currently have a pretty crazy healing build setup
due to finding a bunch of healing centric items
i do extra healing, i heal myself when i heal others, anyone i heal gets bless
oh, where is that last one?
it's a ring iirc
waiting to get my radiant orb build up and running
meanwhile i'm cosplaying a healer cleric
i also got two free healing spells from my necklace
that necklace is quite nice yeah
i mean tbf i am partially a cleric
of Selûne specifically
doing my job as a healer now to make up for the violence and destruction i'm going to be causing later on when my radiant orb build is online
i already managed to get 22 stacks of radiant orb on one enemy before leaving act 1 with only two of my items
shit is going to go crazy when i have all of them
still crazy to me that it does -1 to attack rolls per stack
by the end of the game melee characters are simply not going to be allowed participation if i can help it
Radiant damage synergy in this game is wild
Just remember that in the Rafael fight a number of enemies can retaliate specifically against radiant
Horrifying
is it magic retaliation or
cause then i'll need to be careful
by that point i shouldn't need to worry about melee attacks, especially not from groups
since i have divine smite
also something funny
silence does not work on the circle of stars form spells
i got hit with a silence and i could still use my archer form arrow spell
bunch of enemies can
specifcally all the shaarran enemies seem to have it by default
funny part is that you can apparently cheese it to spam Divine Intervention
if the caster dies while casting Divine Intervention apparently it doesn't count
so you use it to deal extreme damage to a sharran
get radiant retaliation
die
and then when you get resed you can use it again
Its because they aren't spells
So Silence can't do anything
but it doesn't seem to count as one for the purposes of silence
i didn't dare try it against Ethel when we fought her
that would have been the real test
since she gets to clone herself when anyone casts spells around her
weird
but i guess I don't know what Larian did with Stars
normally the form abilities are not spells at all
i mean it could just be like, a "we have to put it into a box" thing i guess
but it is specifically described as a spell
gotta wonder if silence also disrupts ki spells
good question
or does it only work on spells where characters need to chant something
I guess for BG3
the best way to play a murim swordsman would be a swashbuckler rogue?
by which I mean an unarmored swordsman
probably yes
hrm
pathfinder 2e now has a 2 handed sword monk
fighting style
but monks in bg3 are restricted to staffs I guess
Any versatile weapon will work if proficient
Only two-handed and heavy weapons don’t count as monk weapons
Which does mean a monk dip can attach finesse to stuff
(Won’t open up sneak attack tho)
Yes this is good
they get shortswords!
and if you get longsword/rapier prof from elsewhere, that should work as well
can they do flurry of blows with shortswords
yeah you should be able to swing the sword and then get your unarmed attacks
Oh, huh, duelists's perogative could be funny then. Monk/thief rogue? Two reactions, two bonus actions, free attack with the rapier and flurry of blows for more unarmed strikes.
The extra BA from Thief is very good on Monk yes
That’s a lot of attacks
The main thing is mostly just that unarmed is crazy good because of Tavern Brawler
Thief's extra BA is real nice in general, game has so many bonus action items
Thiefs extra BA makes it a little hard to justify the other rogue subclasses /coff
swashbuckler looks good
It does! But breaking the action economy just always kind of wins, maybe for more pure rogue Swashbuckle can press but just damn
It was more of an even choice in ttrpg cause it's not an extra BA in 5e
The RP subclass features that didn't translate well to video game Larian just replaced with a combat thing above the punching class of that level.
Crown paladin gets zone of truth in 5e and bg3 it's Spirit Guardians instead
fwiw the duelist's prerogative bonus action attack is 1/turn
While the monk's bonus action stuff notably is not
Oh, I missed that it cost a bonus action. That's less exciting
Monk-thief is an extremely well-loved combo though
Mhm. It's what my friend is running in our four player game. She wanted Maximum Speed
The standard builds are Monk 6/Thief 4/Fighter 2 and Monk 9/Thief 3
standard according to who
Optimization communities who care about these things
It is a Normal Honor Mode Build, as it were
It's a strong damage build, and also has the benefits of nor overlapping much in gear with other builds
Pretty much
Durable, minimal equipment overlap, playable essentially 1-12 without respec, high DPS, very action efficient
Karlach’s really good for it too, since she can eat a soul coin to get +2d4 fire on all unarmed hits
And “punches everything a whole lot” is very fitting for her
Astarion also, though his bit is only way at the end of the game
I’m pretty sure it’s also not exclusive to unarmed
And involves a pretty major story decision
hey what should be the divide between warlock and sorcere for a sorcelock ?
i was thinking at least 3 in warlock for the evocations (namely aginozing blast)
unless it's level 2 i don't remember
yay especially if i go with hexblade
Hexblade is extremely strong as a dip, yeah
Even if you don't plan to melee
The curse by itself is a huge power boost
I'm not 100% certain it applies the damage boost to each individual scorching ray or magic missile, but it does in tabletop and they'd have had to specifically exclude that
And it does apply to each eldrtich blast bolt
it only state "damage throws" so i guess it's universal
plus if it dies i get heal
so yay 2 warlock and then hard into sorcerer
(shadow cause i want da dog)
(nad i play durge)
Shadow is interesting because so much of its power budget is at level 1 with the revive
it's SO nice to have actual AC and not getting hit by everything
doing the fight with the Duergar in the grymforge
and i haven't been hit a single time so far
noice
And maximum dex
His effective ac is probably actually around 29
Since he has defensive duelist
I don’t think I’ve seen him take significant damage except from spells
He does a lot of damage too with the legendary rapier
That’s why I always kill all the duergar first
With a cheese called bard song around a pile of smoke powder barrels and alchemist fire
Does that do anything if you’re wearing armor that already allows full dex?
err I mean medium armor specialization
or whatever that allows rogues to wear medium armor
I suppose strictly speaking you might not need if you just get the leven armor
Unless strictly opposed to multiclassing, I would absolutely not spend a feat on medium armor
The difference between a rogue 12 that spends a feat on medium armor and a rogue 11/fighter 1 is that the second one gains a whole bunch of stuff and loses nothing
A funny way to kill nere is to during the cutscene with the gnome have someone shove him into the lava
that's fitting, since tabletopping is a gnome national pastime
lmao
yeah we killed him pretty quick but he got damage on me
I'm a lootgoblin so I almost never kill enemies by shoving them into pits.
Yeah
yes. but
24 AC
which admittedly doesn't work often anymore since whole bunch of enemies get save or die attacks nowadays
You'd also get exactly the same amount of AC getting medium armor proficiency from a better source
Multiclassing into any of ranger, cleric, fighter, paladin, or druid will get you it
College of Swords and Valour or Hexblade will also get it
And githyanki and shield dwarves get it
And endgame, you can get a fair bit higher
Like ... okay, highest possible Dex mod is +7, and Armour of Agility is 18+Dex
So that's 25 not far into Act 3 without anything else
With Defense fighting style that can be 26, and with cloak and ring we can get it to 28. There are a number of sets of boots that can bring that up further, to 29.
I think there's one or two helmets that can do that same?
30
If we can fit on a shield, 33
Wondrous Gloves to 34
Off-hand bloodthirst can get us to 35
Oh, 34, Armour of Agility is only 17+Dex
... 33, can't get Dex +7 while wearing Wondrous Gloves
Technically possible to go 3 higher, with Shield of Faith and the Defender's Flail
So I guess 36 is the absolute cap?
For medium armor, anyway
I think Helldusk might be able to go up to 38 or 39
Because of weird nonsense
By no means optimal
I’ve seen AIs intentionally try to run away from high ac characters and eat an opportunity attack rather than attack
The vanilla AI is easy to trick in that regards, it's easy to get 19 AC on casters and if you have a barb with like 16 or 17 AC on purpose they'll target the bar and ignore casters
Parking a rogue next to an enemy that's out of Melee of your low AC scapegoat it'll usually do like you mentioned and take AoO to target low AC characters which means extra sneak attack
man Honor mode grym looks hella scary
we just cheesed it by standing up top and shooting shit down at Grym
easy money
got the adamantine shield so my shield slot is now locked in for the rest of the run
was gonna take Ketherics shield but another member of our party needed it more
i guess if we can get Devonias walking fortress i might swap to that but otherwise this is my shield for the run
I cheesed it with giant mode karlach and a bandolier of light hammer
nice
we got path of the giant barbarian too
gravity is one hell of a weapon it turns out
Well also he voluntarily got onto the anvil at one point so I just eldritch blasted the lever
we used the lever as well
I wasn’t trying to lure it there but if you are offering…
real
Raphael is having a no good, very bad day
He's upside down tposing, if anything everyone else isn't
every time we hit him he would ragdoll
I think the fight took three or four rounds, and he was under hard CC for every round after the first.
maybe the funniest fight we've had in the whole game
Clowning on him, as you should.
You can't see it, but my character is actually dressed as a clown
I'm very sad that you can't wear a hat in your camp clothes, or I'd be in full clown regalia all day every day
should i make laezel a arcan archer or a crown paladin ?
paladin
Crown Paladin is extremely strong, especially as a dip
The 7th level feature is kinda eh?
But the channel oath is insane
Crown Paladin 1, 2, and 6 are all wild as breakpoints
(If you take it to 9 you get spirit guardians but to be tbh cleric and lore bard are both better ways to accomplish that)
Oh, actually, @grave prism , any chance you know for sure if the arrow from Stars Druid benefits from item bonuses to spell attacks?
i do not
sorry
i assume it would
as it is 100% a spell going by in-game descriptions
however, it also is unaffected by Silence
so
i have no idea what is going on there
Yeah, hence why I asked
idk how you'd check but i can prolly do it later today with some luck
You should be able to check the combat log
If you hover your mouse over one of the things it'll show up in the tooltips
Thanks! I appreciate it.
👍
i think my friend has melfs staff that gives bonus to spell attacks
but i'll cop it off him quick for a test
Bizarrely, the dragon breath uses Constitution to determine its DC like dragonborn breath, but does add spell DC increases
huh...
I feel like that first thing might be a bug, but who knows
Looks like a yes! Thank you.
Lae'zel broke up with me ;y;
I don't even know why
i didnt think she would do that after her nerfs
She went up to me and said "I can see you're no longer interested in me" and I didn't have any options
Maybe you accidentally triggered a romance with someone else?
That seems like the most likely thing
I have not spoken to another member of the party
I have triggered their dialogues that the game will tell me about if I don't and been polite but also not really caring
The marked dialogues do have some romance triggers, and the game does sometimes have the Bioware RPG problem where not all of the triggers are immediately obvious. I can't remember which specific ones though. Maybe Wyll and Gale.
~~It almost seems to be a legal requirement in these kinds of games to have at least one romance that's easily triggered by accident ~~
Idk of any way to check other than waiting for the next set of dialogues to trigger though.
Yea I think this is patched but Gales show me magic scene
You get an option to back out of it otherwise it's a romance path, Wyll and dancing
I don't remember other romance triggers in act 1, if you try to kiss karlach but that's pretty obvious
Also I talked to nobody at all in between a long rest of not having that dialogue, and then her starting a conversation telling me it
Hmm what part were you at? Anywhere near the creche?
That's the only thing I could think of is you had the invisible relationship points but skipped a trigger or vice versa and it did a check at the creche of what's laezel relationship points here. Either way if it's this then it'd be a bug, pure guess
ok so Karlach is mly range specialist now
also hexblade with shadwo blade is ridiculous
2d8+CHA is insane
i will put booming blade on it
It's a strong combo, I did bladesinger with shadowblade and booming blade
When you get to upcasting shadowblade and booming blade just adds damage on top of the movement damage it goes off hard.
If you wanted to minmax hexblade/paladin/sorcerer and carry resonance stone would probably be wild but you'd be steamrolling vanilla honor mode with that
My worry with those builds is the very endgame stuff where you fight a ton of enemies who do psychic damage or who are immune to psychic damage
Or both
Steel watch are immune
You could just send the orb to camp during those fights
Unless you're only using one character that's what the other party members are for, being able to deal tons of damage to 90% of the enemies in the game opens up your other 3 to handle the psychic immune
Constructs should be immune to psychic, poison and necrotic.
Nobody wants to harm my eldritch warlock
It’s great
Ever since I got lovers ring and gave the other part to karlach
It gives wearer resistance to all damage and harms the other person wearing it for half of the damage you received
Ever since I wore it enemies specifically avoided trying to hurt me
Poor shadow heart though
How many people use ||Gale as a Warding Bond for STUPID effective health? As I like to respec Karlach into Paladin, Sorcerer.||
I'm on Honour Mode, but without the single save.
I dunnow karlach as a non barb just somehow feels wrong
She's still my frontline fighter. I have a Assassin Rogue, a Light Cleric, and myself 2 Stars Druid, 1 Lore Bard. I'm waiting until I get another level for Life Cleric.
I (tanky Life Cleric) use Warding Bond on my gf (obscene dps Assassin Rogue/Fighter) at the start of each adventuring day and it feels like we're unstoppable, especially since I've specced into healing items and heal myself every time I heal someone else.
You mean like Abjuration Wizard Gale?
I find tavern brawler monk acceptable since punching the shit out of things feels on-brand
I actually just go full Life Cleric with Gale. I fully intend to have him cast Aid, Heroes' Feast etc after each long rest.
Any spare level 2 spell slots go into giving those without Warding Bond resistance to Poison damage.
Something funny with Aid and Heroes' Feast is that you can have a non-active party member cast them
Still don't know who to romance
You don't get that armor until act 3, shadowblade builds you can do in act 1
Aye, but you don’t get the resonance stone until the very end of act 2
Resonance stone is extra, even before then it's one of the stronger builds in act 1 and 2
ok so
Luminous arrow IS a spell
it counted as a spell for the Gremishkas magic allergy
but it DIDN'T count as a spell for the purposes of silence
Honestly so long as you do the quest to take the factory offline and don’t get constantly caught committing crimes before that you really don’t fight many throughout the game
However yah you fight
So many mindflayers
They’re constantly a threat
Although the most challenging fight with them is in the factory XD
Like shadow blade is good, to be clear
And it's low-investment, frankly
You can switch to a proper weapon, hexblades have a pretty easy time of that
Yah, but yah like you said the constant psychic immune enemies does hurt it bad
…are the undead in act 2 immune to psychic damage?
Not sure offhand
I may be thinking of mindless undead in PF
Ok just a quick check in base 5e, zombies aren’t immune
They’re immune to poison but not psychic
But it's also worth noting that if speccing for shadow blade, then certain options are probably being skipped which you might otherwise want
Yah
ok so Luminous Arrow counts as a spell for the purposes of the Gremishka and counterspell, but not for silence somehow
Maybe it just doesn't have a verbal component?
Does the caster say anything when casting it?
our archer is eating good with these arrows damn
i don't think so
that is presumably it
kinda neat ngl
also i got the holy lance helm
so now i do radiant damage if enemies miss me
which is going to be extremely sexy with my 20 AC
yeah that is soooo nice
does damage, reverberation AND radiating orb
4 element monk works similarly, you can use it while silenced.
interesting
also having warding flare and the holy lance helmet is so great
you will in fact not be hitting me, take 4 damage, a stack of reverberation and two stacks of radiating orb
oh wow
omen huh...
mfw i impose -1d6 to your attack roll or saving throw
Omen's pretty cool, yeah
i'm honestly never going to use it on attack rolls
mostly because radiating orb
but being able to boost my allies or force an enemy to fail a saving throw is
pretty fucking good
it's going to be so funny in act 3 when enemies are no longer allowed to make melee attacks
Radiant synergies in this game are very fun
one million stacks of radiant orb
-1 million to attack roll
which will then stack into even more radiant orbs when they miss hitting me because it will do radiant damage as well
the only thing i do that isn't going to cause radiant damage is just like, getting hit
which i won't be doing much of on account of the radiating orb stacks
Still gotta watch for crits, but yeah
well on a 20 they still automatically hit, it's just not a crit
yeah well that's still not a big problem
oh yeah, just wanted to point it out
👍
also i didn't say but i'm going to be reverberating the shit out of anything that takes holy damage from me as well
Is spear a one handed weapon
They're versatile, you can wield them in one or two hands
yeah
As long as it's not a concentration spell that lasts. You can do so with any spell with someone you swap out of your party.
Good to know
We're gonna need to abuse this in our honor mode run
I know there's a ring that casts light on your weapon that i'm gonna abuse
Another long-duration thing that may help one of your party members: if someone equips the drakethroat glaive, and uses Draconic Elemental Weapon on either a party member or a weapon lying on the ground, that will stick on that other weapon until the next long rest
So once the drakethroat glaive comes along you can basically give one melee character +1 attack and damage and +1d4 elemental damage forever
huh
good to know
blood of lathander get
i'm going to use it since i don't really have anything else to use that's better rn
The blinding can be very nice in Act 2
the aura is nice for act 2 yeah
Huh, so this is a bug, but it's amusing: you can pact of the blade a weapon as a non-hexblade, then respec with Whithers as a hexblade, and make another weapon a hex weapon
Because the issue is that Hexblades with Pact of the Blade just don't get the ability to bind a pact weapon
But a pact weapon and a hex weapon are still different things
(And then if you want to be really cheap you can drop Warlock entirely, although it seems like you can't land the curse anymore so)
So does blade pact not do much for a hexblade until level 5
Yep
At which point it becomes mandatory
Tbh I think it's a bad decision
Just let people dual-wield charisma weapons
Now that polearm master works I keep trying to think of a build where using it makes sense
I think they just kinda fold them together if you have both
You specifically don't get the Bind Pact Weapon ability
yeah but it seems to still apply Pact Weapon stuff to your Hexed Weapon
It does
Interesting, the extra attack in 5e is a invocation but its different for bg3. Im surprised they didnt change blade pact or hexblade in case you take both
Or like you said pact and hex bond 2 different weapons for the CHA dual wield
but yes they should let you dual wield
Paladin 6/Rogue 3/Hexblade 3 would be fun and not actually all that wild
... fuck I guess I'm playing a low-charisma character
ok yeah i've just like
not been taking hits in act 2
this is fucking excellent
woe, radiant orb be upon ye
I've never tried a Radiant Orb build. Might have to do that sometime
i'm having good fun with it
Robbing Jaheira's house for fun and profit
(I need Khalid's Gift for the Wis boost on my Monk)
Ngl my 1st 2 playthroughs I didnt know where hope was and somehow scoured the entire map of the rest of the game but missed the hatch and also cazodor's entrance
I just walked past cause it looked like a random setpiece building
Woooo House of Hope cleared
Nah
Hope's got it
Epilogue Spoilers ||And I like to think Wyll and Karlach keep an eye on the place||
Unless they change all the locks we're coming back for round 2
Fun fact: Khalid’s Gift makes Jaheira, and only Jaheira, immune to curses
Which lets her rob the stormshore tabernacle consequence-free
Less fun fact: in BG2, Khalid dies without giving her anything of the sort, and there is a specific plotline where she gets cursed and this is another place where I cannot help but think Larian really did not like BG2 specifically
BG3 feels like it has a weird relationship to the previous games
On the one hand it doesn't feel like they care a lot, or are dismissive (see Sarevok in particular)
On the other there's a bunch of stuff I can mostly only call nostalgia bait
Minsc and Jaheira being there primarily
And some other callbacks
If I had to guess they needed something from previous baldurs gates
tbh, it does still kinda irk me that they called it BG3
Would have preferred it to just be an independent game
I imagine it was a wotc thing, I don't know who reached out first like if Larian said let me work for Bg3 or wotc approached them with the offer of many moneys
If it's the latter I can imagine wotc is like, we want a Bg3 and making a new dnd IP or series isn't an option
This is essentially my position, I think it’s an amazing game and its weakest points are the various cameos
And yeah, I think Sevens is probably right
3?
But yeah, you see Jaheira and it’s sort of, “you could be any cool Harper leader”
“You could be a bard”
It being Jaheira specifically does just feel like a cameo for nostalgia bait
Same with Minsc
They’re just completely different people
Sarevok was never a bhaalist! He studied with them but his interest was always power
Halsin jaheira and minsc
Minsc is a ranger
Lies
His whole deal is that he's a suspiciously barbarian-shaped ranger
With a headwound
"Rangers and hamsters everywhere rejoice" :P
apparently circle of stars forms count as being polymorphed so i can't use Luck of the Far Realms :D
lovely
Maybe you could take advantage of equipment that works in polymorph?
There’s not tons of it
But there’s some
i have all of my equipment slots except like, my necklace, locked in already
It should count as wild shape right? It uses one a wild shape charge so I assume it'd benefit from such gear
yes
Larian patched out guilt keeping you from waking up
My hot take is that Shadowheart not sacrificing herself for her parents and forever remaining under Shar's thumb, especially given we literally see them return to Selune, is the Good Ending
They say, outright, "don't sacrifice yourself and remain under Shar's thumb forever"
Yea theres like no reason for sacrifice especially after the fact with Selune taking back and I assume helps Shart against Shar
So like her life is better than it was before, I don't imagine Selune would let Shar win in any way
Curving Shot will now only target enemies and not neutral parties. (This could cause neutral parties to, then, naturally, also become your enemies.)
oh hey, nice to see this fixed
I do loves sharts backstory boils down to ||Shar is petty and kidnap a future Selunite to spite Selune||
Still can't get over that abbreviation for Shadowheart's name. Why is my girl named after a misjudged fart 😭
Noooo that's not it at all, it's only cause it's the portmanteu of Shar and Shadow Heart (deception)
I know but it still sounds hilariously bad without that context
You know I thought Sharrans were supposed to be subtle
I mean Selune didn't find Shart and her parents unless we got involved
But also Shar is very self absorbed
In lore she's slightly weaker than Selune because Selune has more followers and Shar does not that take well
Tbf she does do a really good job of tricking Shadowheart into becoming her follower even though Shadowheart is pretty clearly not cut out for it from the word go.
And all it took was a million amnesias
Mother Viconia, which I think is weird she's a Sharran since her Canon ending was like she became a good person, probably is tired of Shart.
"she's developed a conscious again, wipe, take notes for next time"
And Shar wouldn't let Viconia kill Shart despite being a major PITA cause Shar is petty and values having an almost Selunite become a Sharran
This is why I find Selunite Tav/Durge to be very fitting
I think Karlach and Durge are fitting for a wholesome she helped you conquer your evils.
I think shart/good durge is more interesting, good durge is an evil being becoming good, and Shart was a good person turned evil
I don't think Viconia ever finds another god per se in ToB, but she definitely goes to the true neutral/possibly heterodox approach to being a Sharran if she and CHARNAME have a relationship.
That said, even if she stays neutral evil
The Viconia in BG3 is unrecognizable
I should have said better person than good. Bg3 Viconia is cartoonishly evil
Sort of like Sarevok in bg3
OH wait
Viconia traveled only for a short time after parting ways with <CHARNAME>, eventually starting a cult dedicated to Shar within the massive city of Waterdeep. One of her followers would eventually turn against her, precipitating a furious Viconia to slaughter the entire cult, herself. Shar did not forgive Viconia this trespass and removed her abilities. Viconia stubbornly refused to atone, however, and instead left Waterdeep to wander the Realms. The dark elf became known as an enigmatic and powerful figure as tales of her spread...and while it was known she no longer worshipped Shar, it was also known that her clerical powers were still great. Who the dark lady now worshipped, however, was her own secret to keep. She reportedly raised an army against the Vaasan Witch-King, viciously attempting to subvert rule over his Kingdom and only barely being defeated after several military failures. Viconia prevented an attempt by the Knights of the Shield to take over Calimport...only to take over the city herself days later and institute a reign of terror and cruelty which is spoken of even years later in shuddered tones. Viconia abandoned Calimport and, it is said, returned to the Underdark from whence she came. Hers was not a gentle return, however, as Viconia would become a conquering force amongst the drow to give even Lolth pause. Her mettle had been tested by both worlds, Viconia said, and proven herself worthy. She would make the drow strong whereas now they were weak. What eventually became of Viconia is unknown and shrouded in rumor...but it is said that even the great Spider Queen does not rest easily any more.
This is her normal ending
She leaves Shar
Canonically
So uh
I'm sorry Larian but what
Sarevok's "ending" after the game is that he was a bad guy, got brought back, then became a better person. It gets weird with him being split into normal Sarevok and bbeg villain Sarevok then merging together?
Iirc after a lot of stories that take place after the game he just settles down
What makes it especially weird is that Sarevok was never a Bhaal worshipper
He studied Alaundo's prophecies and Bhaal's texts, and took advantage of remaining Bhaalists
Because he wanted to be a god
I think it's fair for them to ignore canon outside of the games (is this from one of the books?), but extremely weird for them to ignore her canon characterization from the games
That is the epilogue from Throne of Bhaal
I'm guessing Larian got cliff notes from someone at wotc
So that is, in fact, canon from the games
oh, that's super weird then
In ToB when he comes back, he explicitly says, "oh yeah, lost my Bhaal essence"
Playing DOS2 and DOS1, there's so many underlying lore conflict like the entire deity pantheon
reading the party's epilogues feels like. step one of writing a "where are they now" for your game.
They're basically not in the same universe
I really get the strong vibe that Larian likes BG1 okay, and quite strongly dislikes BG2
I do find it funny that you can make fun of shadowheart’s odd name while named the Dark Urge
I do love you can introduce yourself as The Dark Urge
Also, there's at least one reference to Gorion's Ward by his name from the universally-reviled tie-in novels
Which feels like a slap in the face
tbh
Gee, which one of our party could have murdered this person to shreds? Do you know Dark Urge?
there's a lot of little references to BG2, and I think the whole Durge and Bhaal plot implies they liked it at least enough to steal from it...but it does feel like they maybe didn't pay much attention to the NPCs
Bg3 should not be Canon imo
I think that might be WotC's fault. they did the same thing in the Magic set.
It's a great story but it doesnt adhere to bg series
Oh right, which was funny cause both are wotc
we know that Larian had regularly meetings with WotC people (partly because everyone on the WotC side got laid off by the end of development, which pissed off Larian), and I'd assume a big part of that was like. Brand Identity and setting stuff. Since it doesn't make as much sense for WotC to pitch video game mechanics (although there did seem like there was cross pollination with the 5e2024 playtest material).
In the years following his resurrection by <CHARNAME>, Sarevok never settled
in any one place for long. In Berdusk he is said to have routed an army of
invading orcs, displaying such fearsome power and rage that terrified locals
weren't sure whom to fear more. In Westgate he arrived as conqueror, brutally
enforcing his will only to mysteriously vanish months later. He acted like a
man that did not know himself, and all the stories agreed that Sarevok was a
tortured soul, balancing between life and death, never to achieve either.
Eventually he disappeared, said to have assaulted the Abyss itself, or even
taken his own life. In truth, he journeyed to Kara-Tur to bury his one true
love, the warrior Tamoko. He never returned, though the stories endure.
This is Sarevok's epilogue
I think whoever their like dnd ambassor is for communication between wotc and 3rd parties isn't like a time but just a marketing employee or something
Ope nvm that's even worse
Yeah Larian expressed extreme displeasure with WotC when all the layoffs happened
But like ... who is this guy who shows up in BG3, because he's definitely not the above!
Understandable, Larian is one of the few games companies that have long term dev teams & writers. It seems like a good gig there since
👆 which they've said is a part of why they weren't interested in doing DLC or BG4 as their next big project
My hot take is also that Orin being A Bad Seed Born With Bad Blood is less interesting than setting her up as a normal person who chose this might have been
Specifically as a foil to Durge
I always assumed she was supposed to get an arc like ketheric did, but since upper city was cut early in development she got relegated to a few random surprise appearances then you kill her
To me it'd make sense if act 2 was Ketheric, Lower city was Orin, Upper City Gortash
I think it's interesting that the bhaalspawn plot seems to have been the plan from the beginning, with the early access Tav always having that kind of murderous impulse. They eventually shifted that into Durge, but that probably informed how they developed the cult of Bhaal in general. So they clearly thought calling back to the old games was a good idea, but it doesn't really feel like you need Sarevok to do that? Like. you have a family connection already, it's Bhaal
I know it's not in the cards for the near future, but I'd love to see a Larian Pathfinder 2e game
It'll be really interesting to see what they take away from working with D&D vs the bespoke systems in Divinity.
Part of the reason I'd like to see Pathfinder is that 2e's 3-action turns are very similar to how AP works in Original Sin. Just without the ability to carry over AP between turns
I know Pathfinder had just a million 3rd party books. I'd imagine either they're very hands off on the IP or they're heavily involved with any big 3rd party content creators
if only
I'd take any high profile PF2 game
But also I don't imagine Larian would have any reason to do another IP instead of Divinity unless Paizo gave them money
Even then maybe not, Larian said Bg3 gave them tons of money for them to spend as long as they want* for their next game.
Bg3 was 7 or 8 years in active development too
I remember WOTC saying they wanted a BG3 sized game every 1-2 years after the game was a success, and everyone who knew the development timeline was like "haha fuck off"
Constellation of factors
One of them being that big single player RPGs like this continue to get conveniently ignored
By publishers
I imagine they see an rpg, sees how long it takes for a long one, one time purchases mostly, and pass for something safer like pvp shooter
Hard to draw it on for indefinite profits, too
Yea, many publishers choose not to do rpgs cause profit
Exceptions are like the biggest names in rpgs and even then for every rpg focused studios there's like 10 other studios that will never do one
COD usually has 3 full studios under their belt only making COD historically to get yearly series, and wotc laid off the Bg3 side near the end. There's just no way
Is lower-budget games with faster turnaround
And in that space you have to suddenly like ... compete with indies?
Which is not a very sensible thing to do
I always see like 1-2 people indie devs as exceptions cause compared to a studio their costs are very low
Living wage is a lot of money for an indie but if an indie doesn't make enough they can return to a different job and try again. If a studio goes bankrupt that's it for the studio
Indie devs don't need nearly as many purchases for a return compared to a studio
Which is nice for competition cause not every game needs to be a bottom dollar one that tries to appeal to everyone. You can have a hyper specific niche with sequels if you draw the audience you want
Yep
And frankly, at that tier of production, a lot more just depends on writing and vibes, which is way more difficult to manufacture consistently
I knew Bg3 was going to be successful cause Larian has a strong fanbase, history, and ability to execute but I didn't expect it to like, spread so fast and vast with word of mouth to the point many people who weren't gamers or knew dnd got into it.
Yea, DOS2 is a big name in rpg circles but average gamer probably wouldn't know the Divinity series if they weren't rpg fans
but if it had sold only as well as DOS2, Larian probably would have been in trouble too
I thought it wouldn't be as low as Dos2 numbers since dnd IP would draw 5e fans but that's the most I was expecting of like rpg fans who know Larian is good and dnd 5e fans cause there's not many 5e video games at all but not much more reach than that
Doing some early access probably also helped a lot
I do respect Larian for taking all that money from Bg3 and they knew they could probably make more in bg4 but decided to do something cause wotc is not friendly to most content creators
And you know the lay offs
I so desperately want a big PF2 CRPG
I usually don't glaze companies even ones I like because they're not people and if owner changes they can get awful fast. But so far Larian hasn't wronged me
it would work so well
