You have a Gift (probably a Magical Skill, but it doesn’t have to be) which is theoretically possible to practice… only, you can’t right now. Maybe you’re reaching the limits of what you can figure out on your own. Maybe you need better facilities. Maybe you’re worried about collateral damage. Maybe you’re worried about how other people will perceive you. Either way, you’re limited.
i adore these so much
Someone once wrote up part of a set of Heroic arcs. Based on the Heroic, condition?, I forgot what those are called.
The only one whose name I remember was the Purple heroic arc Princess
They were written by Aisling Iora and can be found on tumblr. I might mumble an explanation of what I remember.
Then you encounter someone who takes you somewhere that solves all those problems. It’s filled with other people who share your Gift. Really, it’d be awesome to stay there forever. And they’d be happy to have you do so!
Only… it turns out that you probably shouldn’t. And they might not be as happy about that.
I meant to send that much earlier.
Sounds like it might be Gold or Silver?
Probably? I’ll need to check the book; planned on typing up more on my phone, but that won’t work well, I’m quickly realizing.
It sounds kinda Blue to me
I think there’s a few versions of it, with the same quests in different orders for different colors.
I could see this as a Bindings I think
You have a dangerous and/or forbidden power you're dealing with, an arc ally, and the potential to bridge your two worlds
The quests, listed here in default order (but other arcs might have them in other orders), in short because phone:
- you’re stuck and nobody can help you.
- you meet a person who can help you and will take you to the enclave, and they try to persuade you to go.
- you’re disoriented by how accepted you are, and want to stay, but are also thinking about your home.
- (optionally) you learn that this place has sinister ends, and that you need to get out.
- (optionally) you have people from that place trying to bring you back or stop you from leaving, probably by force.
I think there might be a version that’s something like 4/1/5/2/3?
I am back at my computer and Ready! To! Research!
Also to type up some potentially better summaries of these, with pretentious and not particularly good names:
Autodidact's Lament (AL):
You've hit a brick wall when it comes to studying your Gift. Maybe you've tried to research it, but... you're stuck, and it's frustrating you more and more and more. It's clear that you need something, or somewhere, or someone, that you just don't have.
Potential quest XP options (with guesses at colors, but some might be major actions, so who knows):
- [GOLD][BLUE] You make the same mistake three or more times in a row.
- [RED][SILVER] (possibly Major) Something or someone important is damaged or broken by your Gift.
- [GREEN][SILVER] You listen to someone talk about your Gift when they think nobody with that Gift is listening.
- [GREEN][BLUE] You read incorrect information about your Gift.
- [GREEN][BLUE][GOLD] (?) You try something dramatically new and different with your Gift.
- [SILVER][BLUE] There isn't enough space.
- [SILVER][PURPLE] Your clothing is burnt or stained.
- [SILVER][PURPLE] You fail to explain something/Someone doesn't get what you're trying to tell them.
- [GOLD][GREEN][BLUE?] You pull an all-nighter.
- [RED][GOLD] (possibly Major) Someone incorrectly thinks you've succeeded at something big, or that you're doing a good job.
- [GOLD][RED][BLUE?] You can't tell if what you just did worked or not.
- [SILVER][RED] (possibly Major, possibly deserves to combine with the above) You don't learn anything from your success.
- [SILVER][RED][BLUE?] (almost certainly combines with one of the above) You don't know why what you just did worked.
Thoughts? And I can pin down what goes where later.
Some of those should maybe be Orange instead? Though not necessarily.
Voice of Experience (VoE)
You meet someone who, unexpectedly, Gets It. They (probably) also have your Gift, or something very similar, and they're used to it, and they make it look as awesome as it actually is. In fact, there's lots of people who are used to it. And you're very eagerly invited.
This character might take on a surrogate parental role to your character. They might even be your character's parent (frequently their mother, for some reason). Either way, they're trusted. (Whether they're trustworthy is, of course, another question.)
Quest XP options:
- [PURPLE][BLUE] Someone's nonplussed by whatever you just did.
- [PURPLE][GREEN] You experience unexpected sympathy.
- [ORANGE][GREEN] You show off.
- [RED][SILVER] (probably Major) You're unexpectedly bested.
- [GREEN][RED] (probably Major) You hurt someone, and they're not upset.
- [BLUE][ORANGE] You have to choose who to interact with.
- [PURPLE][GREEN] You're unexpectedly candid.
- [PURPLE][RED] Someone else makes fun of something you don't like.
- [PURPLE][SILVER?] (Could probably be fused with "you're unexpectedly candid") You talk about something for longer than you expected to/longer than you intended to.
- [PURPLE][RED] Someone assumes that you know something.
i'm equivocating a lot on the colors for that one, because sometimes the mentor is going to be more or less evil, which your character may or may not be aware of, and other times they're going to be genuinely kind.
Where They Understand You (WTUY)
Until now, you're used to not showing your Gift to other people, if not outright hiding it. But here? Here, that doesn't happen, because it doesn't matter. You can practically run amok, and if anyone notices, they'll just cheer you on. In short, it's a new home...
...and it's far away from your old home and friends and family. Keeping up contact would be hard. Is that worth it?
Quest XP options:
- [BLACK][PURPLE] (almost certainly Major, but knowing the colors seems useful for speeding up/slowing down) You do something fun at night with a bunch of other people.
- [SILVER][PURPLE?][GREEN? Probably not] You do something really trivial with your Gift.
- [SILVER] [GREEN?] You wear unfamiliar clothing.
- [SILVER][BLUE?][GOLD?] You have the space you need.
- [GREEN][GOLD] (probably Major) You push your Gift to its limits./You stop holding back.
- [GREEN][GOLD?] (Probably a Major action, in either this or a sped-up form) You miss a scheduled call or letter.
- [GOLD][RED] You meet a lot of new people.
- [ORANGE][RED] (possibly Major) You're put on a stage.
- [SILVER][RED] A conversation starts in the middle/You find yourself in the middle of a conversation.
- [BLUE][PURPLE] Your mistake makes people laugh.
- [??? I could see Silver or Green or Purple or Red] Someone else says what you're thinking.
- [SILVER][GREEN] (maybe Major) You sleep better than you expected.
- [SILVER][RED][BLACK?][PURPLE?] You verbally compare your current situation and something you're used to.
- [???] An in-joke falls flat./Somebody doesn't get an in-joke/other slight variations:
- You don't know the lingo.
- A piece of slang is misunderstood.
- Somebody has no idea what you're talking about.
- [BLACK][GREEN] (possibly Major) You realize how long it's been since you last talked to some specific person.
Maybe something about being needed elsewhere, or not having the time to train? That might just be something at the end of the quest, because on some arcs, the resolution to this has to be "this is awesome, but I can't stay here" and it really is awesome and not secretly evil so much as it is... isolated. Far away from where you ought to be, or where you need to be. But sometimes, there has to be more of a reason to leave, and that's what the next two quests are for.
A Tarnished Cage (ATC):
At first, it seemed like this place was good. And, in a lot of ways, it is... but not all of the ways. This place... isn't good for you. These people aren't good for you. They keep telling you that this is your home... and you really hope they're wrong.
Quest XP options:
- [GREEN][RED] (maybe Major) You learn how to do something terrible.
- [GREEN][BLACK] (probably Major) You feel like it's in your nature to cause harm.
- [GREEN][RED] Someone casually mentions a terrible thing.
- [ORANGE][RED] (probably Major) Someone else has made plans for you.
- [GREEN][ORANGE] You get away with something illegal. (Maybe toss in something else and change it to "Injustice goes unpunished"?)
- [RED][ORANGE] You fail to leave a conversation.
- [RED][BLACK] You listen to people badmouthing your old friends.
- [SILVER][BLACK] You can't enjoy your meal.
- [GREEN][ORANGE][BLACK?] (probably Major) You're told to hurt someone.
- [RED][PURPLE] You try to be mad at someone, and fail.
It was an active struggle to not make all of these Green.
They Will Send Out Dogs (TWSOD):
You've left. Finally, at last, you've left. And good riddance, too.
...your Mentor disagrees with that decision. They want you back. Maybe they're going to send people after you to get you back. Maybe they're going to go after you personally. Either way, they're not really asking nicely anymore.
Quest XP Actions:
- [ORANGE][RED] You recognize the person you're fighting.
- [GREEN][RED] Your opponent calls you by your nickname.
- [BLACK][RED][GREEN?] (probably Major) Your former mentor says you're still on their side.
- [GOLD][RED] You stop yourself from hurting someone.
- [GOLD][BLACK] You sleep fitfully.
- [GREEN][GOLD?][RED?] (maybe Major, but it doesn't have to be) You intentionally hurt someone you care about.
- [BLACK][ORANGE] You're chased through somewhere familiar.
- [SILVER][RED?][BLACK?] You learn that something changed while you weren't watching.
- [GOLD][ORANGE] You're in a small space.
- [GOLD][ORANGE] You have to make do with whatever's on hand.
- [ORANGE][BLUE] (can probably combine with the above) You jury-rig a fix./other variations:
- You make do with an inferior substitute.
- You do your best with whatever's on hand.
- You have to kludge something together.
- Something breaks, and you can't properly fix it.
- [BLUE][GOLD] (probably Major) You refuse to forgive somebody.
Thoughts on all of these walls of text?
Or, give me any Skill (mundane, magical, or superior) and I'll do my best to fit it to these arcs; just... pick something that could conceivably meet the basic criteria of "can be practiced, but requires certain situations/environments/other people to practice" please? Or that can potentially be mangled into fitting that format? Don't list Do Things, is what I'm saying. (Which is, in fact, one of Sezhi Schwan's skills.)
Honestly, that order is probably pretty workable for Orange/Knight.
It also works well for Gold/Aspect. For Purple/Shepherd... I suspect you could do... VoE/AL/ATC/TWSOD/WTUY probably? There isn't a particularly great candidate for Shepherd 1, and ATC/TWSOD might be switched?
As could AL/VoE, actually, but probably not.
Silver/Emptiness... I could see something like WTUY/ATC/TWSOD/AL/VoE??? It's definitely weird, but just... rebracketing the story so that the escape from the badness is the start of the story rather than the end feels appropriate.
I think Voice of Experience works best for some of these if you make it so that this person doesn't have to actually share the Gift in question, although they generally should for at least the default versions. But, sometimes, just having someone who's surprisingly understanding and accepting can work well enough.
...if I didn't drive everybody off, what do people think of these?
Sorry. I'm not the best at judging quests. No first hand experience with the system.
Will look closer now
Fair enough
I like the flavor? Makes me think of ending up at the Bleak Academy. Now I am just imagining like a young Excrucian being sent to Town to get their high school diploma.
Actually, that might be a decent version of the Silver arc. And I wasn't imagining going to the Bleak Academy because I think the place you end up is at least initially accepting of you, or accepting of you on a surface level? But, on retrospect, it could work for that too.
But "leaves the Bleak Academy, and is shocked by how Not Awful things are" would be a really interesting character arc in general actually.
There is an RPG.net thread where someone wrote up Disney Princesses as Excrucians. Ariel was kind of like that
I'm thinking of... actually, I think I'm thinking of a half-remembered plotline from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mostly? But also a few things I can't exactly place, involving werewolves?
If you just do three quests, it's entirely possible that the place isn't actually evil at all. It's just that staying there would involve abandoning people you care about, or you have some kind of urgent problem to deal with and so you have to ditch them. If you go further, though, then it's clear this place is a Problem. I'm not sure if there should be some coercive stuff in quest 4?
I need to reread Fable of the Swan. I kind of lost track of what was happening once the swan got involved
But I started to wonder. What is Lee Scathing had accidently a goose instead of a swan?
Thinking about the cyberpunk setting Jenna wrote for Ex Machina(the TTRPG book no relation to the movie)
I like the idea of the person who does this being like ... a Bleak Anthropologist
apparently, Moran based some of the quest arc progressions off of Issues, which... maybe should be a thing I try to look at? Although, that's for writing up a sort of a story, rather than translating a type of story? But it might be worth thinking about to figure out if I'm putting the splits between different quests in the right places.
Issues are in their structure fairly similar to a lot of the arcs yeah
Also... a lot of the arcs are designed to not describe the same events, so a character can run through them like 5 times in a row and get 5 different stories out. This probably cannot do that.
Two random thoughts:
- What would Otherside Picnic arcs look like? I could see Green, Black, or Blue stuff going on primarily, although there's certainly individual quests in other colors.
- I have weird thoughts about a character who turns into (or secretly is) a giant legless lizard. Is there something here? Some sort of... I don't know, Aaron's Serpent Mimic style thing? Just a Serpent, but weird? I don't know if this thought goes anywhere.
...I actually want to seriously develop this quest set. I'm not going to now, though, but... sometime.
(I also feel like I may have developed this backwards, or be developing this backwards, by making a surface-level version of it and then trying to backfill the underlying structure.)
This is things that happen to the PC, not things they do. (I need to elaborate on this in the morning.)
So. Does turning into a legless lizard help?
untested, but plausible
wait this was from the Big Eyes Small Mouth publisher, I didn't realize that
what was her cyberpunk setting like?
Named IOSHI, very little physical augments and instead focuses on cognitive augments and mindfuck may-not-even-exist conspiracies
good job Jenna
I tried to run a glitch game once. Went okay. Didnt really understand quests super well. And I feel like the people I played with would have preferred Nobilis.
I understand them better now, but doesn't mean I know how to gm them
understandable
Part of why I'm trying out GMing Far Roofs is that the structure feels well-prompted in a way I click with
...my problem (which I touched upon yesterday night) is that, if Autodidact's Lament is supposed to be Aspect 1, that means it has to end with the character having some kind of a breakthrough. Not encountering a mentor who then helps them in a later quest; they have to have a breakthrough of their own. Maybe this involves seeking out a mentor, but I feel like it shouldn't necessarily.
I also think Where They Understand You, in some versions of the quest, maybe doesn't have to end with you leaving whatever place you're in? It certainly doesn't always end with leaving immediately. I think its substance is about being pulled between this new space, where they understand your Gift, and where you came from, where people understand you as a person better, and where you know people. And you probably have weird social obligations happening in both places, and, eventually, have to pick one of the two, but which one you pick depends. Sometimes it's about leaving a place which can teach you in favor of your friends, or because you have to leave; other times, it's about abandoning your old home for a place which is less familiar but ultimately fits you better.
...although, for most of these, a lot more of the quest actions should probably be things the character does, not things that happen to them or that they get pulled into, in addition to better figuring out how they turn out.
That sounds maybe kind of green?
It could be green, if it's about what you are, or orange, if it's about who you are. I might be trying to make too broad of a quest, honestly.
Sorry girl, dont really understand quests well enough.
Because as it stands, the Gift could be basically any Skill or some miraculous powers, and maybe it shouldn't be, or at least mostly shouldn't be and if you want to wrassle it into working with something else it's your fault that it's silly.
I kind of want to make a big wall chart and link the arcs where I see similarities. Like Wanderer, Gardener, and Lore all connect to places.
Because right now, I'm trying to create something where the Gift might be (Magic) Psychic Powers, or Superior Werewolf, or Clickable Rune Figurines, and those kind of all want to have different commands on them.
That said, individual quests get their own color separate from the color of the arc, and that could definitely be a green quest. I have a lot of Green/Purple stuff in there because I'm equivocating on whether being more casual with your Gift and getting more into this group is actually good or not. So you might be getting corrupted, but you also might just be connecting with people more.
I really need to figure out how "you have a breakthrough at the end of Autodidact's Lament" ties smoothly into "You find a mentor in Voice of Experience", though that might be solely because I just need to read the arc structure more carefully.
Hmm. Corruption is relative
I think that maybe for Aspect, They Will Send Out Dogs (which I'm now abbreviating to SOD) should go before A Tarnished Cage? But not necessarily. Having their order swapped feels really weird, but at the same time, if I don't, ATC needs to evoke a bit more... battling, rather than being in a terrible place, and SOD needs to be more about hiding from the threats than about fighting them even when fighting would probably be the more obvious choice?
Otherwise, it works well for Aspect, and I probably just need to tinker a little more. ...I think, if we're saying this is primarily an Aspect arc, Autodidact's Lament involves coming to a bit more of an understanding of the underpinnings of your Gift, and then Voice of Experience is about a different perspective on how that gift relates to you as a person and probably ends with you saying "this isn't just a thing I can do... this is part of who I am/a vehicle for self-expression"... and the latter of those does not feel particularly Gold, actually. I also think that you shouldn't say that Voice of Experience necessarily requires joining up with whatever group? But maybe you do, because That's Just How The Quest Arc Goes. Otherwise, you might be sort of recruited into it, hence the weird social obligations — like, you don't necessarily want to be the newest member of the Hiking And Also Secretly Being Werewolves Club, but you sure are getting invited to a lot of their camping trips and treated as a member of the group!
Orange... I don't think these quests quite map well enough to the various different stages, although I might whack at that sometime later.
I think that you could maybe hammer it into Bindings, but I'm not sure how.
I think that if I want to make this work in various different ways, and maybe even if I don't, I need to make the quests both more different and more about doing things. A silver quest about living through something isn't wrong, and that's what I've teed up ATC as, but having that for Aspect 4? No. And if I tinker with some stuff, I can probably rearrange these into a pretty good Otherworldly (green) or Emptiness (silver) arc, or maybe a Shepherd (purple) arc.
This is kind of for "your teacher is Evil" and kind of for "you need to leave your training early" and... I think that someone should be able to go through quest 3 (WTUY) without having to decide immediately whether or not this new group they've fallen into is evil. It's just... different from what they know. It overtakes and overwhelms their life, and they have to start doing stuff for it (werewolves have to have big annual meetings on the full moon; professional Clickable Rune Figurine players have to go to the semi-official mock tournaments; alchemists have to present their research at a symposium) and it separates them from their friends slightly.
I think that, since this is a group game, it'd be bad form to have a quest which typically involves moving into a cloister, a secret realm, or the distant wilderness, unless it's reasonably possible (if somewhat difficult) to enter and leave there.
I feel like WTUY has something about being physically fatigued by trying to be in two worlds, like having to sprint everywhere to get where you're going in time since it's so distant, or being sleep-deprived because the stuff going on in that other world happens late at night and then the stuff going on in the regular world starts earlier in the morning. Also, one of the major goals is "A raucous party starts at dusk." I don't know why, exactly, but it is.
I don't know who here cares about Elden Ring but over in #1251763655578488872 the Flame of Frenzy has come up and I'm pretty sure it's either a Strategist or Deceiver but I'm not 100% sure which and also it behaves kind of like an Actual? It's unclear if it even is sentient, but it sort of represents entropy and also pain and also the death urge and also a desire to return everything to one thing (hence entropy). In practice, this resolves as burning the entire world to ash, usually after a resolution that it's the only way to alleviate the pain of themself or of the world.
Also, it afflicts people with Frenzy, which represents itself as a glowing golden flame in people's eyes, which also lashes out. It's also a force which one marginalized group turned to after they were all imprisoned underground under suspicion of worshipping it. What do you do with this? It could honestly be the entire Excucian cause, arguably; some turn to it because of their own pain, and others because of the pain and fundamental injustice of the world, but either way all must be destroyed.
Frenzy is pretty Strategist
in motivation anyway
the world is flawed, cruel, painful
the only thing to do is to burn it all down
I thought Strategist was "the world is broken and that's awful" and Deceiver was "the world is working as it's supposed to and that's awful" and I wasn't sure which this was, but I could definitely see strategist. The whole "corruptive frenzy that takes people over" thing is kind of Wack, but could probably be done with Sentimental? I'm trying to remember what Strategists get besides Sentimental and Accursed.
They have Eide, Flore, Lore, and Wyrd, I dunno that in Chuubo speak
(But, Flore is the Treasure stat that Nobles have, if that helps)
re the Deceiver/Strategist split, another difference is... Strategists suffer about it
Whereas, for Deceivers, it's kind of a failure state when they get real, so to speak?
Deceivers say the world is a Lie
and that there is a beautiful truth underneath it all, they just need to get all this creational gunk out of the way first
If it gets personal and emotional for a Deceiver, their things tend to fall apart. For a Strategist, it's when that emotional outburst stops that they can't keep doing the destruction
Apparently Gatekeeper/Accursed/Sentimental/Troubled. Flore is Sentimental, for reference. Gatekeeper is probably Lore?
it is, yes
That said, there's rumblings about it getting swapped out for something else, too.
From what little I know of the frenzied flame bit in Elden Ring, I would probably put it at Strategist, too
||Especially considering the origins as part of the world itself that freaks out and turns violent against it|| (nominal Elden Ring spoilers maybe idk)
It almost feels like Strategists would use the Frenzied Flame rather than it being a Strategist itself??
the Flame spreading could be conceptualized as a Contagion probably
if we assume the Flame itself were a Strategist, it could be some kind of automatic Contagion gift maybe
I also think it's kind of... entropy. Like, one could argue that rather than making the world gone, it's about making the world all equal and all one and the same, and it's just that the way to do that is to turn it all to ash, because it more or less is entropy (among other things).
I think of it as more, the Lord would be a Strategist, and maybe the ||three fingers that are/formed/personify the flame?||
so you could call it a Deceiver if you wanted, and then it gets some mileage from Creature of Delirium taking people's eyes, probably? Reality Syndrome to throw people into your Experience face-first? Could go either way, honestly.
Unless you say it's ||a tool of the Three Fingers even though narratively I think the Three Fingers is more the prophet of the Frenzied Flame and its means of communication?|| The lore is very unclear on that.
||The way I'd had it explained to me was, essentially, the flame was the other half (or, other three-fifths) of the big golden essence that defined what the one great's influence on world's was. It broke and split apart, into the golden order of the two fingers and the golden chaos flame of the three fingers||
Hmm. I should maybe buy Elden Ring. And finish dark souls 1. And buy dark souls 3.
||I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds plausible at least?||
My thought for today was unshackled NHPs are Actuals
||Nor do I lmao I've never even played the game||
I haven't played either but I've watched LPs and read lore analyses of varying reliability and lowkey hyperfocused on it. ...one thing that's interesting is that all but like one character thinks the current way the world works is Fucked, and everybody wants to change the fundamental way in which reality works (at minimum repairing the machinery of the world, but frequently they want to tweak it in the process and this is presented as at least a potentially good thing). Which is odd in contrast to Nobilis, where you're kind of protecting reality?
This varies on a scale from "the same thing we did before, but Even More So" to "burn the whole thing to ashes" and everywhere in between. And even the first one isn't entirely wrong, since arguably it would fix the problems that the old version had.
(also the one guy who thinks things are okay is kid of an idiot. There's another guy who wants to go back to "how things used to be" while also entirely misunderstanding what that means and accidentally doing the exact opposite of how things used to be, and he's also kind of an idiot.)
mechanically I always thought it would use Actual or Deceiver stats, even if the motive is a bit more strategist
It sorta does a lot of of that "twisting you up inside" stuff that Persona(Knave Of Stars or something I forget the Chuubo name) and Become Somebody are both good for that
It also feels like it would have Deepness
Star quality
I really like The Frenzy Flame as A weird Deceiver who experiences Pain and who has like "The Madness Of The Frenzied Flame"
The Actual Option puts a lot of focus on Visage and Deepness and who has a Role like "The Frenzied Flame" with a failing like "Nihilism"
But. My earlier thought. Unshackled NHPs are actuals. Or like potential actual? Dunno
They don’t really have the inherent corrosion/this shouldn’t exist that Actuals do and have implied by their stats
Actually unshackled NHPs would probably be a lot more Immortal
haaard to say
depends on how far you want to go with "fundamentally non-anthropomorphic mind" + "isn't truly alive or ensouled" as parallels
imo True God or Wildlord would be a more direct parallel
Yeah I would go Wild Magister
Fair. I think benign Actuals are sometimes A thing?
Nah not really
Unless your in Chuubos I guess but that is more a case of metaphysics being broke
Or well I guess it depends on what you mean by Benign, I am sure some Actuals attempt to be kind, attempt to help people, just by the nature of their visage
But then it spills out and makes those people just mere extensions of them
The Best Friend is also highly atypical. Otherwise, we have the Spirit of the Wish-Granting Engine, who I'm pretty sure uses the Actual powerset but isn't an Actual, and Billy Sovereign, who's a bully. Not a person who bullies others; he is, on a fundamental level, "a bully". I don't think it's entirely clear whether he has an internal life experience or an ability to act as a person, or if he's just kind of taking bullying-related actions without any internal reasoning or logic.
I think the Best Friend (who I'm maybe going to call they/them Suzy Schwan since that's what they ended up as in the Horizon campaign), in the temporary absence of Chuubo, might be at risk? Honestly nothing about them should have worked and I hope they never get told this.
Thinking a little bit about the delineation of superior skills
Like Superior Vampire
Heh a character who went all in on Superior Vampire but no other superior skills
based
"My Name Is Roderick Ovhorn. My father was a soldier who never came home, my mother was a waitress."
"You really don't get it, I'm trying to show you... I'm trying to show you how the world Really Is"
"My Name Is Roderick Ovhorn. I am the florem of Jovus, Lord Of Night Crawlers. I am her knight, her sword and shield. She watches over me"
"Forget about her, for just a minute, PLEASE. You have to understand, this whole... this whole thing its just a big game, and your in my party"
"My Name Is Roderick Ovhorn. I am not Edram Cyanide, Player Of Games. I do not play games, I do not see the world from behind a screen, I will never be Edram Cyanide."
"SHUT UP. Listen here you little shit, you and I BOTH know what I am talking about. That bitch can't see it, but you can. The Cracks In The World, The Hidden Things That Show How False It Really Is. You've seen me in your dreams. So JUST WAKE UP"
"My Name Is Roderick Ovhorn. I am a only child, I like cherry soda, I am loyal and I am kind, in 5th grade I broke my leg going down a hill, under the guidance of my noble I have slain gods before."
"SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP"
*greater ignition sound*
Was thinking about Conversion on deceivers again, and I at least headcanon you can do like Steel and shit to resist a conversion as a mortal. To my knowledge the actual convincing is a mundane action
Thinking about the properties of The Name of <deceivername> and you probably can't just put ...is <deceivername> in there. You would probably have to say ...is the word <deceivername> which is less likely to explode everything by acting like an Actual.
...thinking about Creature of Delirium here, which is a thing Deceivers get in Chuubo's, and how if you make one of the properties ...shows identity you can steal or overwrite peoples names and, in doing so, make them forget who they are. Which is a thing Creatures of Delirium explicitly get to do — after stealing a weymark from someone, they can (depending on their idiom) either turn that person into a monster or send them to wander in a dreamworld temporarily. I don't know what the Nobilis equivalent is.
I mean, I'm not sure why "is [deceivername]" is nonviable
That's Scelto's whole deal, no?
Also apparently Creatures of Delirium just got an arc 0+ power that helps them shapeshift or disguise themself, which is very fitting for a Red ability, when Frantic Red gets to say "this is what I look like and I can quickly return to my signature appearance" and Immortal Red gets to show off what they look like currently, so Sickly Red getting to look like what they thing they should makes sense.
I... really only know about Chuubo's; everything else I've kind of accidentally osmosed. And copying one kind of power with another isn't really that wrong, and turning someone into you in a Creature of Delirium way is probably different than turning them into you in a Become Somebody (which I think is Façade? It's the thing Actuals use to have and apply the properties of a pSelf) way, but it just feels odd.
I mean, if you make another of the properties ...will not be forgotten, relinquishing that from someone is a good way to throw them into a mist-like dream state, which is very Creature of Delirium aaand I think I'm just replicating Creature of Delirium outright as a pState instead of making one that would be applied as, say, Reality Syndrome/Sealed. (What is the Nobilis name of this, by the way?)
Scelto of the Provenance is a Deceiver whose pState is Scelto of the Provenance
Ah.
And their deal is, you might unknowingly be Scelto of the Provenance, and that is dangerous for the people around you
Deceivers being able to be slightly Actual-y is a feature, not a bug
It's part of their vibe
They share... one arc; I thought it was two. (And I have to step away for now but will hopefully come back with more ideas for this.)
Sealed and a bunch of other stats didn't get independent names and ladders until Chuubo's afaik
there's a Nobilis 3e expansion on Deceivers that uses Aspect, Persona, and Treasure for them (Ace, Star Quality, and Sentimental in Chuubo's terms) but in Glitch's model the only one they keep of those is Persona/Star Quality
Nobilis 3e tries to emulate everything with just Aspect, Persona, Domain, and Flore
Did they later have names in Glitch? Since I think that uses the same names as Nobilis.
Aspect, Persona, and Domain have the same names, Treasure was renamed to Flore (hence why I call it that)
flore is a fun name for it
I've heard Become Somebody (Visage) and Star Quality (Persona) are closely related mechanically. But i dont know how true that is
Persona has several miracles regarding emulating your Estate yourself, and making other things emulate it and be part of it
Which are both features of Visage as I understand it
So, yeah, they're similar deals
They have some commonality because they are both Orange arcs
Nods. Orange Arcs overall have a very strong similarity to each other because they all share an important rule toy in their Truths.
I do think that Visage and Persona are closer than either is with Allegorical though
both of them have ways to turn your Truths into Geas/Afflictions and both make you very... charismatic lets say charismatic
Blue arcs and I think Purple arcs have shared rule toys as well.
All green arcs have elements
most of the arcs share some stuff, it's usually the things that are arc miracles in Chuubo's
hence why both Eide and Wyrd have Casting and a kaiju transformation
and Monstrous would presumably also have those
Eh. Those are similarities but I feel like it is a bit different from what I am talking about. Just Casting and kaiju transformation aren't the bread and butter miracles for Eide and Wyrd.
the weird thing with Visage and Persona is that they are more... foils than literally using miracles from each other
Like the way they function is notably different, but the outcomes are similar
like Persona has A Certain je ne sais quoi
Visage has an overpowering aura
Both of them make you extremly charismatic, and for similar reasons, but the actual miracles are diffrent
Persona uses its truths as a Toolbox that it applies to itself and other people but notably at its own convivence
Visage uses its truths like a sledgehammer, they are always on and they focused on only them
Neat.
they aren't, but it's what connects them as Silver arcs
True. But I was just noting that colors have more marked similarities than others.
0: Asking questions, receiving warnings. Messing with an important feature of the arc? Other informations stuff.
1: Enhanced senses. Social presence?
2: Enhanced actions.
3: Uncertain.
4: Attack powers? Activating a signature effect? Calling on special powers?
5: Miraculous enhancement.
6: Defensive/healing powers.
7: Making stuff.
8: Training a new trick.
Rough list of effects which I think miracles tend to have at different levels. Some are more speculative than others
I think these are more coincidental, believe it or not to my knowledge for full miraclous stats glitch style they tend to be ordered in a way that would cause flavorful sync ups at certain levels to enable the titles
The big one I remember is at Eide 4 you unlock both Greater Agony and cliffhanger at the same time
Geomancer has you unlocking Greater Projection and Ignition at the same time, making it the iconic “love is a weapon I’ve learned to cut with it” level
You can really see this in those blog posts where Jenna drafts aspect
• ...hold a close place in <deceivername>'s heart
• ...bring <deceivername> happiness when they are happy, and sadness when they are sad
• ...can easily be understood by <deceivername>
• ...will one day meet a cruel and bitter end```
Thoughts? I'm not sure if that second point should be split into two or not, because I feel like there's arguments for either alternative. I also considered something about them loving the deceiver in return, but I almost feel like it's better without that. In Chuubo's terms... I imagine this would involve making Reality Syndrome/Sealed do a lot of work? Probably with a Hack involving the ability to "take something into your heart", which in turn "reverses their fortunes"?
I also wonder if it should be phrased in such a way as to include things and not just people.
...independently, I'm thinking about the Six Sins of School, and about what their masks might look like (for some reason which might be Bleach I'm imagining the masks as white unless otherwise stated). The only two I've figured out is that Owler's covers most of the face but has a V-shape cut into it so the slit partially exposes the eyes and mouth, and Glass Spider's has colored Piet Mondrian-esque squares decorating it.
Also (since I was looking through the GMD characters) about Billy Sovereign, and how The Exultant (whose sin is to love wicked things for the purity of their intentions, and wickedness for the sake of wickedness) and/or Lee Scathing (whose sin is to condemn humanity for experiencing the world and having sinful desires and thoughts, and prize a clean, perfect innocence which no person could ever hold) would feel about him. Or, honestly, Impious for what Billy Sovereign does, plus Impious does academic stuff and I get the vague impression that Billy Sovereign is a muscled jerk who beats people up for their lunch money. I suppose he doesn't actually have to be that, and could be stuck-up and cruel in other ways if he was a student at School, but that feels less correct somehow.
That is a point about ladders but I think the thematic synergy of that climb varies. Structurally I think several of the ones I suggested will tend to repeat. Just I think all gold arcs will have a Rite at level 8 in the vein of study up. Blue arcs, if they have that function, will likely do so as well to echo Lore. Enhanced Action category will at least repeat with the Holy and Monstrous versions of Stunt but something similar but different might turn up in a lot of places. My ideas for 4 are kind of vague but will probably repeat several times because it is a good place for a major power and because the I think Geasing yourself with a Truth is going to be at 4. 5 will definitely repeat with Monstrous. Six and seven are pretty much guesses.
As I suppose 1 is
0 I feel pfetty confident about
Some Guesses on Holy.
0: Sense thingy for appearing.
1: Spotlight/In Focus
2: Stunt
3: the appear thing
4: ???
5: auctoritas magister (I think)
6+: ???
That would make sense to me
Here’s my take
The level 7 or 8 miracle is the uh…what’s it called
The Fuckin get your shit together miracle
With the lesser version being regular mind control and the greater version being a wish
Hmm. Armored cheetah.
excellent Treasure
Nah. In Jenna's blog posts about Child of the Ash she uses as an alternate pair of traits for shed scale
oh that's cool
I've been thinking about kaiju scales, i might want to give one for a rat in my Far Roofs game
Any neat ideas
🫠
only idea I've come up with is solid<->gaseous, and I think that could work, but I'm not totally sold on it
That is more mood/antimood
The Immortal Green arc Child of the Ash/Vastness features the capacity to take on a kaiju or war form.
One of the miracles, the evocatively named shed scale, lets the user shift between sizes anywhere from microscopic to big enough to swallow the sun (looking at you Apep)
But a character can use it to shift between other pairs of attributes.
Runny and rigid?
Other bits include having a nominal world/vibe that is associated with your character. The capacity to invert that vibe (mood and antimood). Miraculous destructive abilities. Adaptiveness. The ability to vibe with others. And either merging with the landscape or the ability to ignore topography.
I saw someone whose Shed Scales shifted between nearby and far away, I think (and it didn't have to be direct; they could be right next to one person, and miles away from whoever that person was holding hands with).
im beginning to start planning a nobilis game
mimic game
like actually starting to plan this
lmao
the SCHEMER
Where you play mimics? Are the players tasked with hunting mimics?
yeah
a really really funny situation to be in i think you mean
for everyone involved
I mean I'd be stoked to be a secret traitor god striving to destroy the world
If a Mimic enNobled me I'd have a blast
lmao
i dont think the mimic is having a blast but y'know its probably a stressful job
silver lining though
none of you want to rat eachother out
so they have incentive to not care if you break the law
Rare Noble that can be open about their relationship status to their Familia
yeah
though maybe theyd rather you really do a good job of keeping that under wraps
just because attention is bad
Yeah, outside of their Familia that needs to stay hidden
it also gives players opportunities to make some fucked up estates
like its free reign for taking an irl estate and making its properties absolutely fucked up
or making something not what it actually is anymore
My best mimic idea is the mimic snake of tickets and tourism. He can use Theft to steal someones destination. And. His Blasphemy is one of alienation. That cultural gaps and personal experiences can never be truly reconciled. That we are all truly alond grasping at shadows.
Sorry to ask. But do you have a group already?
Yeah kind of. What edition would this be usinf?
3e probably
unless 4e suddenly starts coming out before i actually start this
it may be a couple weeks cus im finishing up a chuubos one shot
jenna plz
foil karen's plans and release 4e
oh noooooo it sure would be a shame and ruin my daaaay if jenna removed the ndas on playtesters and opened up the preview documents for nobilis fourth edition oh nooooooooooo
I could shoot thee a copy if thou wishest tbh
pokes head out of hole in ground werrrre youuuu planning on vooooooice?
Probably not actually. I’m undecided but I wanna test out live text? We’ll see
Well, you know my level of interest then :)
:3
Ooooooo👀
My best idea so far was News.
Lmao good takes I suppose
It’ll be a couple weeks still since I need to set up some stuff but I’ll be planning in the meantime
Mimic Estates are very fun to imagine because you're conceiving of this part of the world as wrong somehow, as not how it ought to be
Which then inherently gets you in a more Excrucian way of thinking from the character-creation get-go
Actually, question
Were mimic estates always wrong, were they formerly proper estates until the Imperator that used to have them was killed and used to make a mimic, or can it be either/or?
Pretty sure they were normal until the mimicfication happened
That’s what I thought
depends on how the Mimic was created too presumably
although i wouldn't be surprised if there's some degree of retconning in there
since some Mimics are the corpse of an Imperator, filled with blasphemy and "brought back"
and some are created from bits and pieces and are basically a new entity
Oh I thought it was always the first thing
My understanding is - Mimic Estates aren't the Estates that existed beforehand, they're more, like, recongealed scraps of what's around, shards of the old Estates mashed together in new ways
yeah you can also kinda frankenstein a Mimic together AIUI
You realize what this implies
A Mimic of Vanilla existing means Vanilla is not naturally a part of the world, but it's been composed of scraps of something else
The specifics of how it works can vary
This implies Deceiver Victor Frankenstein being hunted by his vengeful creation
I think the imperator of transport mimic was an example
Naturally, part of trains and cars
but yeah either way, mimic estates have always been weird and incoherent
(How this works if a Mimic does a Rescue Rite to a normal Estate is probably a complex question)
they are not supposed to be
Ironically, Mimic Stats are also very good for mad scientists themselves
They have double blue arcs and all
But as a mimic, the expression of its estates either skip past the driving part in a weird portal. Or like…they just truncate the entire evolution and it’s carriages now
I think it might just twist that estate into a more distorted form too
Excrucians ought to have mad scientist energy
Sometimes a mimic just means there’s carriages instead of any car
Yeah, that'd be my interpretation too
Nope some are built from bits and pieces
It’s great
the trouble is that AIUI in universe you won't know that the mimic estate is weird, or that it used to be different
Essentially - if you're a Noble for a Mimic, your Estate can lean into being fucked up and wrong and bad, and that's neat!
it's just how things are
(You can do that anyway ofc)
Building mimics is a fun project
Yeah
What is Deceiver Victor Frankenstein’s pState?
it works pretty well for Strategists and Mimics, not as well/needs weird takes on it for Deceivers and Warmains
If carriages were the only form of transport we wouldn’t think it that strange
The discoveries of victor frankenstein
Frankenstein's Monster, of course
"the creations" would be a pretty classy one
well the most ovbvious one would be "the Monster of Victor Frankenstein"
(For the Vanilla angle, I'd probably do something about it as a "plain" flavor or an "absence of flavor" and how that deprives interest and variation from the world)
Could also be that vanilla is more of a color now. That you can eat
You can eat anything as long as it’s vanilla
I think for a Warmain the mad scientist angle isn't hard to do - it just has to be, they're the mad scientist that created you
But it’s a color
This is funny because the Mimic is then part of the pstate
So…yeah
Since that dynamic strikes me as very Warmainescent
I’d honestly encourage mimic estates to be directly strange rather than just evil.
Because I think about the estate of transitions a lot in this context. It’s the exact same as cars, including accident rate and all.
Except it just skips past the part where you drive
how would a Deceiver make a mimic?
a Wield might work?
Oh
yeah
You could just get a blasphemy elsewhere
Because the blasphemy is the hard part, stitching a corpse around it is the easy part
Call up your strategist buddy and say “hey can you get a me a mimic blasphemy”
“I can make a blasphemy with my eyes closed but can you do me a favor”
Strategists are like, that kind of supplier in the host.
You call em up when you need abhorrent weapons made or pocket dimensions carved
“I want you to say ‘the world is wrong’”
lmao
“… the world is a lie?”
“See that was close but you messed up two words at the end there”
Deceiver and strategist duo who have this dynamic
Constantly work together and constantly do this shit to eachother
“Oh don’t worry I can make sure this entire city gets twisted for the welken rite”
“Good, I appreciate-“
“Can you just say something for me first?”
“…god fucking damnit”
Gamelord who openly hangs out with excrucians too often to be a mimic because mimics would hide that shit
like, they just think they are cool
(Are they cool)
in the same way a Gamelord is inherently kinda cool
but do the Excrucians think the Gamer is a cringe poser?
Depends on the Excrucian in specific
I imagine most Strategists would be the most tilted
But, depending on specific demeanor, I could see Deceivers and Gamers getting along and/or Warmains and Gamers
yeah
I think Warmains and Gamelords have enough in common to be like... relatively chill about it
Strategists probably would call it slurs and it smiles and keeps following them like a fucked up dog
Warmains and Gamelords share both their aspect and domain stats
Warmains and Gamelords explicitly have a ton in common
like not only do they share two stats but the stats are in the same place
They both have Hunt in their aspect and Monstrous in their Domain
“Is Diogenes a warmain or a lord of game?” The greatest discussion thread in the history of Nobiliser forums, locked after 10,471 pages
I'm pretty sure nearly every Gamelord would have counter-slurs in the chamber in any and all situations
Gamelords know not-slurs
(By about page 5 you had arguments that Diogenes would be every type of miraculous being available)
Diogenes the Zu...
By page 18 a significant faction have formed arguing that Lord Entropy is Diogenes, followed shortly by claims about Ananda, Surolam, and the other guy
Leading to sub-arguments about what all of these are
Some guy claiming to be Diogenes joins the forums
That just makes the Strategists even more mad
By thread’s end it was all guys claiming to be Diogenes
(Turns out Diogenes was an Actual)
scelto
News appealed to me as a mimic estate because it can be written as a mimic estate without having to fundamentally change it
That’s also true!
You can just take an existing concept and say “yeah so this one isn’t supposed to be like that”
Yeah, and, that's a fun lens to interpret things through
One might say the world is wrong
:3
The best comeback to an Excrucian is “your mom”
“Your mom is a lie”
“Your mom is wrong”
Ineffable logic
Excrucians reduced to weeping heaps
Like this did happen in fable of the swan
True!
I am on trial before Lord Entropy for disproportionate violence
Excrucians when receiving any retort other than "actually I think the world should exist" (they're prepared for that one)
Something something “anyone ever tell you you look like a pale malnourished Edgar Allen Poe?”
I can make that meaner
Do it
Edgar Allen Poe HP Lovecraft
Jasmine found out her brother was a lie very suddenly. This happened before becoming an Excrucian. After she got hit by a dodgeball the rest of her life turned out to be a lie as well
Robbie Rotten probably has Called Away/Wanderer. He just never leaves his house
Yea that happened
The Fire Professor Colker Started 20 Years Ago
- Left Lasting Scars On The World
- Haunts
- Is a metaphor for their ruthless ambition
- Hides evidence of crimes
Made this for a Deceiver PC
I get the feeling Professor Colker is not a very nice person
they are the classic "Evil Teacher at the magic school with a dark past"
as opposed to The Fire Not Started By Billy Joel
- It's always burning since the world's been turning
- We didn't light it
- So we tried to fight it
was tinkering away at mimic name and landed on "eudonia"
and found out later that its also the name of a moth
which does make for a good excuse
"no no thats not a gothic ninuanni name its uh...a uh moth. yes."
"...do you have bug theming at all?"
"maybe! shut up!"
I imagine it's a conceit of the world of Nobilis that people don't go "hey that name sounds Ninuanni" even when it extremely does
this is very true
probably also because gothic languages might also just...be used elsewhere
in the setting
in places that arent the void
still, really funny coincidence.
name translates to Eternal Thunder
Hmm. Hammer bros cool
Yeah. I have no idea how to make them relevant to Jenna games
Chancelfolk
Bowser is a good Bane
sburb player stat spread
one of the Role ones
Worldwalker
maybe Lore??
Awakening
Vacuum…
… is abhorred by nature
… is hostile to life
… appears to be empty
… contains hidden energies
… scares dogs
real
...thrives on attention.
...feeds anxiety.
...pretends to be unbiased.
...some other stuff.```
Is that for news?
Yes. Accidently left that off. Zleepy.
Two additions, one from an off-server friend and one to which I owe Ru credit
… is always imperfect
… pulls things in
Lmao
Thought: Laika the Space Dog as an anchor
Also Curiosity and Challenger
I’m specifically thinking along the theme of “stuff humanity has lost or abandoned to space due to negligence”
Or at least, negligence as a misanthrope would see it
Nodnod
That’s good stuff
I also like the idea of that noble having a sort of cosmonaut aesthetic
Bubble helmet and all that
I’m imagining them as a bit of a wannabe Excrucian
“Haha, don’t worry about being a rider, you’re all part of the Warhost!”
But tbh good vibes good vibes
If there’s any point where being a wannabe excrucian is acceptable socially it’s here
Hmm. Thinling about the news as a mimic estate. For a character, I would have her as someone who is both resents the news for how it is broken but who is herself shaped by that brokenness. Probably worked in the news industry but as a researcher, someone who was off screen
Random quote from the translation of a Japanese-only yugioh lore book (yes, I know this is a bit arcane) which seems tonally relevant for this channel for reasons which I do not fully know how to articulate:
A “god” is that which steals: It wears the clothes of humans, it wields the weapons of humans
A “god” is that which devours: It swallows the life of humans, it slurps the death of humans
A “god” is that which grieves: It pities the sorrow of humans, it curses the love of humans
A “god” is that which dies: It destroys humans, it is destroyed by humans
A “god” is that which is born: Countless times, countless times
Here's another random quote that goes hard:
This is a legend of the curse of flames, as told in a certain land.
Is the power of the bestowed flames a curse? Is the power to bestow flames a sin?
In all of creation, it is the hand of the gods that grants life, not that of man.
The bestowed flames make life eternal, yet condemn the appearance to a grotesque wielding of flames.
Thus, people call her the condemned princess
Another random quote from a different lore book which goes hard, but not as hard, but would still make a good character:
A Goddess who inherits the blood of Heaven, who is trapped and grieving on the other side, but glows with an unmatched aura while accompanied by her beloved Dragon, “Kur”. Deprived of light, she rejects everyone else, and refuses to forgive the world of the living. When someone appears before her, the light goes out. There is no one who has ever seen her cold beauty, and only the fact she exists is known. Her name is Eres. And she used to have the sparkle of sunlight in her eyes.
(Yes, this is Ereshkigal.)
Something about "stealing the clothes of humans" does feel very Sealed/Reality Syndrome, in terms of Second Skin power copying.
...what do Aaron's Serpents do besides make wish-granting engines?
Their sealed powers I think actually vary
This has tons of Imperator vibes for me
I'm trying to remember what exactly Imperators do, or what their pwoers are, but I do feel like there should be at least something Immortal thanks to that last clause.
Child of the Ash/Primordial/Called Away/Awakening, apparently. Not sure which of those would quite map to the relevant phrases but it doesn't feel wrong either? I could see Awakening matching some of that stealing. Or Child of the Ash, especially given how in the lore they have stole giant mechs (or the technology to build them), but that's not really relevant to the phrase itself.
Actually, Primordial's ability to acquire new limbs also probably counts.
Serpents are born of the world tree. They're gentle, as gods go. If stirred to anger they could flatten mountain ranges, swallow worlds, blot out the stars with their bulk, etc. but they'd much rather bask in the sun, smell the flowers, and so on
Wide range, imperators are the whole gamut of Creational miraculous beings other than Nobles, Actuals and Zu or whatever they’re called
They’re the ones who make Nobles
lemme see if I can find any more lore phrases which go inexplicably hard.
The thing which made me think of them in particular is that to make a Chancel (a home realm) they have to kill a hundred people
And in general “safety can be bought with murder” seems to be a truth of Creation
https://ygorganization.com/story-6-vaalmonica-vbex4/ this is maybe almost slightly something? I will keep looking for anything that hits even harder.
Like there's lots of stuff that could fit, or be made to fit, but not all of it goes so hard.
There is an avatar that smites evil as the embodiment of punishment itself, and has command over the scorching skies. With a swing of the Flamesword of Prajna, the filth of this world shall return to ash. O sinners, may you be scorched by the fury of the Dragon King.
- “Avatar” for Kurikara is one of our early names for 天童 (tendou), which is when a deity takes form as a child in the human world. There are some disputes with the term “incarnation”, which would have been easier to use.
(translation note for the above)
Usually the "extra ones" from side cards that aren't part of archetypes will have one that randomly goes cards:
An ancient, immemorial age. The king of the demon gods who ruled over the demon world, massacred the human world, and challenged the heavenly realm. Its body was massive enough to cover the sky. At the end of the war, the armies of the angels were unable to destroy it, sealing it instead in a gap between worlds. It was expected that after an eternity its body would falter and die in oblivion, yet the spirit of the demon god did not vanish. Once the world is filled to the brim of demonic power, the king shall descend once again, wielding its forbidden power.
In the beginning, there was no light nor even time in the “Primal Tehom” filled with the “Black Water”. Then, the eight pillar deities were born, and then the Sun was created.
Before the names of heaven, before the names of earth...
(yes this is real mythology but twisted for yugioh cards. Shut up. It's fine.)
Now I'm thinking about a lot of this stuff in terms of Chuubo's and getting lost in the sauce.
Also thinking about Big Big Big Elden Ring DLC Spoilers. But it has a character who (some spoilers? Not sure if these count as big or small, but definitely thematic) ||I could see as being of Hell, or of Heaven, or of the Rules, honestly? It doesn't help that a lot of details about them are vague, and while we know what they're trying to do, it's very unclear how they're planning on doing it and that changes a lot. I could almost see them as a Deceiver, even, since they're cursed and believe that the current fundamental nature of the world is flawed on a conceptual level and the whole thing needs to be replaced.|| Anyone here know enough about Elden Ring, and/or does not care about major spoilers for Shadow of the Erdtree, so I can try to figure out what ||Miquella|| is?
...honestly? I could imagine them having ||Become Somebody|| which is extremely strange.
News as a Mimic Estate...
...is strengthened by attention.
...spreads anxiety.
...is widely trusted.
...ignores boundaries.
...if not repeated is forgotten.
...if forgotten is ???```
||They also really don't mind the Deceiver powers. They definitely do things which are arguably sharing an Experience and arguably doing the Creature of Delirium thing, albeit there's not any evidence of anything physical being stolen. Also Impresario, which is the Purple arc that isn't A Keeper Of Gardens (I think Architect? The one about a place) which Ruleslords get. They're pretty complicated either way, and some of that complexity also boils down to their morality: they have a lot of loyal followers. They also have the ability to make people love them. When this effect is broken, they still have some loyal followers. It's unclear what percentage of people's loyalty is genuinely owned, but it's greater than 0% and less than 100%.||
@magic mason is my resident Elden Ring expert
But imo ||Miquella|| is an Imperator of the Dark/Game
??? That's definitely not my read. I suppose I can see it, though? It significantly depends on whether your interpretation of their end goal is ||writing compassion into the fabric of reality, so that it guides all people|| or ||forcing everybody to love him and/or each other and basically brainwashing them||. The actual narrative is very vague on this point and I've seen arguments for both.
doesn't map very cleanly to any one miraculous beings in terms of motivation
||My spicy take for the curse twins is strategists, with Miquella being a really weird Worldweaver and and his sister being on the Wyrd Girl Wendsdays juice||
What are those in Chuubo's terms?
||Sentimental but probably with a lot of Troubled and Gatekeeper, and Accursed but probably with a lot of Troubled||
||However overall I feel like narratively the strategist powersets kinda feels good with them. Gatekeeper, Accursed, Troubled and Sentimental as arcs||
||I understand that, and Malenia's definitely dying of her power, but the Scarlet Rot doesn't quite seem right for that? I almost wonder if she's Called Away to the Lake of Rot, which is Decay. Or a Prophet of Decay or something.||
||Glitch Accursed(Wyrd) has abilities like Shattering and Contagion that feel good for that sort of thing. Like infecting the world around you and people hitting you too hard causing natural disasters||
...wait, no. ||Malenia is a Wounded Angel with the Scarlet Rot as her Blasphemy. It fits with how, when she's severely injured, she can get stronger, and when pushed to the breaking point, unleashes a power with massive collateral damage. Though the Rotting of Caelid was actually intentional so actually maybe not? But it kind of feels right. Malenia's sword arm might also be an empowered wound, actually.||
||Do we stat up Empyreans as Fallen Angels? There's an argument for Divine Miquella having Creature of the Light, and charming people by using Reality Syndrome to share an Experience of Compassion. But I'm also not 100% certain that Divine Miquella has the same arcs as pre-ascension Miquella has the same arcs as Miquella the Kind.||
||Wounded also works yeah. Fallen stats work well for both of them even if Fallen Philosphy doesn't. Personally I am more used to splat assigning than Arc assigning so this isn't 100% my wheelhouse||
||I just kept thinking that "hey the twins work pretty well with strategist stats", but Fallen works better for them the more I think about it. Miquella Holy, Sealed and Allegorical maxxing. ||
||I'm sort of doing both? Malenia... doesn't love the Pests, though. She's explicitly abandoned them, and they're sad about it. And Miquella is all-loving at least until he abandons his love, and then possibly afterwards but in a strange backkwards false way, but doesn't love people for their wickedness. And I feel like he ought to have something Black for the simple reason that "wandering the land, ritualistically shedding your flesh until you emerge a god" feels very black. It could be Green, and work for Called Away, but... no, that's not quite correct.||
||Holy: Creatue of Light, Sealed : reality syndrome, Allegorical: Allegory||
All I know is that he's a twink I wanna beat up, which forms 50% of my Gamer vibes alongside Carmen Library of Ruina
||Evil Fucking Child(read like Evil Fucking Wizard) is classic Gamer vibes||
Angela is a Strategist Dying of Goddamn Ayin Abandonment
Now, here's a question: ||How well do the other Empyreans work with these stats? And I think the answer is... decently well? || Although I do need to ask: what Arc is most able to place a geas upon someone? ||I sort of wonder if Gods and Empyreans don't have quite the same arcs.||
I still have fleeting hopes of there being at least one Lobotomy Corporation/Project Moon spoiler I have not yet osmosed.
also while I'm thinking along those lines
Carmen is a Fallen
Wyrd has an ability to do so in GLitch
so does Eide but its a specific geas
(Eide is troubled)
I think ||the Omen twins work as fallen, and so do the Raya Lucaria trio I think, but in a weird fucked up way||
I think Angela is constantly suffering from something, but not dying from it which indicates Eide but not Wyrd
And like, the only splat with Eide but not Wyrd is Mimics and well that fits so good
also a fair argument
||...Ranni gets to Appear, which is a Creature of the Light thing, although some of the other stuff is a bit less clear; her Tangled History. Messmer who's not confirmed as an Empyrean but totally is has an Allegorical special weapon (Messmer's Flame), a Tangled History, and a Blasphemy (the Base Serpent). Melina (who's also not confirmed) appears to have a Blasphemy and/or a Weapon but it is, once more, quite unclear.||
||Morgott using Appear just to kick your ass/j||

Style 0- Hidden Techniques of the Subconscious

No bias tbc/joking
||Malenia overtakes people by placing Grace in their eyes, which is kind of the opposite of what Creature of Delirium does, and she places a geas on the Fire Giant. And it would be thematically interesting at minimum if gods were Mimics. Possibly not correct, though.
...is Ranni's blasphemy Blaidd? Surely not, right? She's a close friend with someone whose role is to kill her, but that seems more Gatekeeper than anything else. It's all terribly vague.||
||...does Miquella's Creature of the Light/Holy make it so that it's not a sin for him to magically compel people to love him? I mean, it's still extremely morally dubious at the absolute best, and profoundly evil at worst, but it doesn't feel like a sin.||
||That is simply what a Miquella does. He compels people to live him. Could def be a divine warrant thing||
||though like a lot of powers, its pretty easy to "build your own" divine warrant with gifts or in this case just a geas/affliction||
||There's something about Empyreans appearing to people in dreams or visions; Malenia dreamt of Miquella, Ranni presents herself to you as a specter and later as a doll holding her soul, Melina exists from you sometimes and is invisible otherwise... Creature of the Light's Appear definitely seems fair enough but maybe not completely adequate?||
||In general its very chill to bend whatever the hell is going on with your miraclous stat to fit what your doing better||
||I'm not... actually... sure if this is entirely true or not prior to ascension, but it would be really cool if Miquella's Legendary Weapon was "I wear a luminous circlet woven from compassion, with which I can steal the hearts of others". I... don't think it actually is, though? I think his legendary weapon is, at least at first, his Great Rune. And then he breaks it, because that was what he had to do to achieve divinity.||
||"The Great Rune in my eye allows me to shrive from people's hearts all that which is not love."||
Hell yes
been working on stuff for a player questionnaire for mimic game
and theres some funny bits
heres a question to the excrucian pcs
Why are you here?
The Powers are bound by hierarchy and their relationship to creation. Even your sovereign colleagues are bound to that Ymerae mimic, but you’re an excrucian. You’re a ninuanni death god, a being of emptiness and breathless void. Darkness darker than the night and brightness brighter than the sun, your divinity is internal, self justifying, self perpetuating.
So why are you hanging around these chucklefucks? This is a seriously important question. What's keeping you here with them? Do you just like them personally? Do you have a personal connection with the Mimic? What's going on here?
Is this a hidden role game
not plannin on it
the powers will know they work for a mimic
this ones gonna be a bit open about it
i see i see
Gehenna -
A Chancel made from the bones of an Actual, the eyes of an Angel, and the blood of a Mimic. It is a prison, its entrances secret and warded from prying divination. Its walls are folded in, and its warden is Puriel, blind Angel. Here Mimics, traitorous powers and imperators, and defeated excrucians are brought. Here, they will be broken down, and drained. That power will be parceled out, given to imperators who wish for a more ‘ethical’ method of making a chancel, given to Powers who need bones of divinity, given out as a general resource to help in the war. It is a gray and ashen place. You can in theory make a request to Puriel to visit, and she may let you in.
Most don’t.
Scheming
Breaking off a piece of flesh from the Not Even Angels Could Make This Ethical nightmare space
I need it for a thing, don't worry about it
Sometimes you need it for a thing
They sell it as liquid or as a powder
“I can’t believe you didn’t kill humans for this” butter for a chancel
Ethically* sourced
“Cosmic crimes YOU don’t have think about”
“I can’t believe it’s not murder”
ah man im excited to fuck aroudn with nobilis politics!!!
And embroiling people in schemes!!
WOOOOOO
Nobilis is a fun game, it's easy to get hyped about
yeah!
I've never actually been that good at roleplay which makes me nervous
in text rp you dont actually need to be really good at rp, at least not in real time
its certainly a lighter load imo
Oh, here's a fun one to figure out: Renalla (from Elden Ring). She was given the Great Rune of the Unborn, which allows her to cause people to be "reborn", awakening in a new body, youthful and reenergized... but this process, especially if abused, can turn people into strange childlike beings, many of which surround and attend her. She's more or less oblivious to most of this; she's spent countless years caring for a massive amber egg, pouring energy into it to allow the child within to finally be born (it is likely, but not guaranteed, that this is ultimately futile and will never amount to anything), and has lost interest in nearly everything else.
I need somewhere to learn about Elden Ring lore other than TV tropes
The Sinister Potions Of Decievername...
>Are too strong for you
>Are very marketable
>Come with an unforeseen price
>Grant a dark power
>Are obviously a scam
The Shadow Cast By Deceivername...
>Has a mind of its own
>Always follows behind
>Is in opposition to the light
>Flickers and dances
>Holds power over what it grants shade
Using Persona to turn someone into a marketable plushie...
Using Persona to get someone's idol career off the ground
I think that's probably the default use of Persona
XD
Every miraculous entity is managing a vtuber nowadays
It's true
Most True Gods are actually just vtubers themselves
My brain has jumped tracks, and, "arg where the framing sequence is a vtuber and their manager is the creepypasta monster" is honestly an inspired concept
they're so silly
What about Snakes and Wildlords?
Snakes are just them in a Chinese dragon disguise
Mimics work best for me with the idea that they're just wearing spy tf2 paper masks
That’s not that far off the mark
They don’t actually have their specific imperators abilities they just have a set of abilities that’s good at pretending to be other abilities
And a whole lot of pain and suffering
thinking about Sinister Void Alchemy with Deceiver Flowers
doing a Magical but not Miraculous version of destruction using a Welken rose
Time traveling with a phoniex posy or something
I do like that
maybe using Gorse for mind control
I think gorse is a normal irl flower
There’s I believe 3 big void flowers in the deciever book
2 others I believe in the strategist book
The dream weed, that one Shapeshifting thorn one, the welken rose, the milkmay, and the phoenix posy
yeah but its listed in the Deciever keys so I think it would be really funny if it is also fucked up for no reason
what is about with the milkmay again?
The milkmay is the one that had the same color scheme as when you press against your closed eyes
I think it’s about change or transformation
Hmm. I periodically think about Exalted Yozi in Nobilis terms. And I just realized that there is one Exalted fanfic quest story which gives one of the Yozi explicit flower symbols with implied symbols for the rest.
Oooo
Comparing Exalted's cosmology and concepts with Nobilis' is very fun, yeah
The Yozi are the demiurge/titan figures that got overthrown? Or am I misremembering
oh okay
The other half, the Neverborn, are the ones that got killed in the rebellion
The Yozis are the ones that surrendered to stay alive
ahhhhh got it
feels a little like the great void-beings that were killed to form the Weirding Wall, but not quite
they are both very mad about it
well okay, the Neverborn are mostly in eternal agony from not being able to die properly
The Neverborn are like if a WoD Wraith was impossibly massive and its fetters were the entire existence of reality
it turns out, the primordials were never supposed to die
so when they did, it kinda broke things
and now ghosts exist, and it sucks for everyone, especially the Neverborn
amazing
but yeah there definitely are some parallels you can draw
Solars are pretty directly comparable to Nobles
Neverborn and the Abyssals by extension feel a little Strategist-esque to me
oooooh nice
I love the way the fae parallel Excrucians, too
There's a lot of parallels one can draw
Its so fun
it also helps that Jenna did in part write some stuff for Exalted 😛
the Forest Witches are a lot of her writing AIUI
which does track now that I know that
Yeah!
Especially the Sidereals, if I recall
1E, notably
1E is interesting because “this setting ends in tragedy by default” was the explicit authorial vision
Devs talked about this
ohoho?
Before there was a World of Darkness etc etc, plus the metaplot finale
Even setting that aside though, none of them were really into that
But Gabrowski’s take is that there are too many powerful people fucking everything up for anything to go well
She also wrote the Yozi I think
As part of this shpiel was a really interesting comment that is applicable to Jennagames, too:
Here's an interesting idea, based on a) another piece of media (and if anyone gets the very stretched and indirect reference I will be surprised and pleased) and b) my understanding of how this would work:
<Actualname>...
- is <Actualname>
- is in motion
- is hard to identify
- crudely imitates what it sees```
(I'm guessing the first property is always going to be `is <Actualname>` but it might be something else, like a description of where the Actual came from, or the role it etched into reality? Like `is the Actual which drifts through the city at night` or something.)
Paraphrasing, but
“Being smart doesn’t mean you’ll do the correct things, it means you’ll do the incorrect things really well.”
aspect 5 miracle "Make Things Worse"
They are Become Somebody Truths
so this fits
Yeah, I was basing it off of that exactly. The parenthetical addendum is because the Best Friend's first Truth is about being the child of their parents, not just being themself tautologically.
lmao
Honestly, I think that's a theme of like half the characters I play in rpgs
Actuals are weird, because normally applying properties to yourself and applying them to others are different stats, right? But Actuals I'm pretty sure do both with the same stat. Although Awakening/...I think Deepness might also apply them to others in really limited ways?
Persona does both
Also I think they're constantly applying their Truths to themself passively.
Persona does both yea
What do the four stats map to for each splat? I know you mentioned them each having a treasure stat, right? Do they always have one thing which applies their properties to themself, one thing which applies their properties to others, one thing which gives them Treasures, and then a specific fourth thing (with different splats interpreting those in different ways), and if so, what's that specific fourth thing? Or are those "rules" loose guidelines at best, even discounting Actuals?
They tend to have equivalent to Nobilises 3es Aspect Domain Treasure Persona
In ways that arent always logical to anyone but Jenna herself
And even then maybe not even her
oh actuals actually applies pretty nicely
Become Somebody is their Aspect stat(it is their nature)
their Domain stat is Gatecrasher
Their Persona stat is Awakening
and their Treasure stat is Impersario
This is specifically in reference to “why are things shit with all these super geniuses running around”
...last I checked their treasure was Sentimental (which is what Strategists have) but yeah. Also the odd thing is that Awakening lets you make tools to give to others, and Become Somebody lets you apply your Truths to other people.
its
A stat that is their nature
A stat that lets them do their Noun loudly
A stat that lets them do their Noun quietly
and a stat that connects them to the world around them
Actuals don’t have the sentimental equivalent Flore
no actuals have Architect/Impersario/Sickly purple
Yea
only Nobles and Strategists actually have Flore
Well, apparently I'm looking at an old reference, because Chuubo's content has fallen by the wayside.
https://jennamoran.tumblr.com/post/183592158443/mid-march-thoughts-on-arc-assignments is what I'm using. It's older than Glitch, and so superseded by it.
oh I have an updated version of this post!
Yea that’s where the differences probably are haha
Immortal Bindings - Gatekeeper (here, here, here)
Frantic Bindings - Ruffian (nowhere near finished)
Sickly Bindings - Wounded Angel
Immortal Knight - Allegory (here)
Frantic Knight - Become...
You do? I have a list of references from this reference list which I thought was still getting updated but apparently not.
Referenced off Jenna’s Thoughts on Arc Assignments, linked at the bottom
Immortal Bindings - Gatekeeper (rough draft: part 1, part 2, part 3)
Frantic Bindings - Gatecrasher (rough draft, as...
most of these are still on the dot
the ones that changed most is that only Lords Of Game have Prophet now
ans snakes have Allegory instead of Knave Of Hearts
That is two years older than the one I posted.
oh huh
well most of these are more accurate to glitch era, weirdly enough
besides a lot of the stats being diffrent but you can see the progression
ok he further you get into the post the weirder these get
but uh, this is where I learned a lot of this andd apparently a lot of it stuck
Fair. I use the arc reference because I'm reasonably sure it's up to date? I am mildly unhappy that the Horizon campaign stopped being written halfway through. I understand why, though.
but, yeah, with the advent of Glitch, Chuubo's has simply... faded into the background.
There’s a lot of chuubos content out there
This is a super helpful link btw
Nods.
I remember there being a big chart with what each stat was for each splat but I can't find it anymore
I know decievers are
Aspect: Deepness
Domain: Sealed
Persona: Persona
Treasure: Theft
Oh, that is a neat tool.
Yea I’ll pin it
Appropriate use of my moderation powers
I find it interesting, but not unreasonable, that Actuals shifted from Frantic to Sickly Purple. It means they're an even 50/50 split between Frantic and Sickly, and also lets them have minions to pull out of nowhere rather than having a few individuals who they support and/or haunt. It sort of changes what they can do rather than just rephrasing it, though.
it gives them the funny thing of all of their stats letting them subvert reality and insert themselves into things
fits well into their weird reality cancer vibe
Gatecrasher to sneak into a hidden world
Awakening for Deepness Conversion and blurring the lines between fiction and reality
Become Somebody becoming somebody
Impersario for forcing themselves into your life
the mimic statline is also hilariously great
i was plannin on having a mimic that was super into building devices and gadgets despite having a wizard chancel
and the statline is really good for having gadgets and devices
Mimics are really funny silly
Sort of. Sickly is all about subverting reality; Frantic is more about simply Being, and not really caring what reality has to say about it.
well I mean, beyond just the arcs some splats have "all of their stats let them do their core thing but in diffrent ways"
like how All Of The Fallen Stats let them be omnipresent
frantic does have some subversion tbh
the subversion is "fuck you i do what i want"
sickly is more...twisty. more externalized
but a lot of frantic is just straight up powerful
The Goons Of Deceivername...
>Are numerous and interchangeable
>Seem to be functionally immortal
>Are intensely loyal
>Have impeccable comedic timing
>Cannot defeat a main character
Hilarious
You can make anything your goon
You can become goons
You can become numerous and interchangeable
Style as a McGyver stat is S-tier
It’s hilarious
best mechanic in Glitch i think
Greater Fail is a banger mechanic
#food-club message CW: non-vegan food, specifically pizza, I saw someone refer to this as a Flower Rite
I think he might be right
Oh Jesus Christ
building an Ability 4 strategist exclusively for Greater Fail on-demand
Further proposal: a Flower Rite is what happens when you induce an argument between descriptivists and prescriptivists on a cosmic level
probably yeah
The act of enNobling is the act of taking one person and saying “you get to be a prescriptivist, it’s cool when you do it”
divine warrant
If the Exalted and the Nobilis were in the same universe the world would end
Not because of any big fight or anything but because they'd all make out sloppy style and forget to win their respective wars
I think the Deceivers are the perfect grenade to throw among the various evil powers in Exalted to start an immense disaster
Just enough Ideology to them that they can get anyone at each others' throats
Okay, fic concept: four excrucians, one of each type, end up in the Exaltedverse
All hell breaks loose
the mimic is so, so scared (no change from base universe)
Strategist getting into an infinite standoff with a Solar of Destruction to Wyld Cauldron to repeat
Alternately, the mimic realizes they are massively overqualified and ends up running Yu Shan
The Warmind is about to get fucking punted by the power of friendship
No not that one
Even worse, Strategist talks to a Cauldronist and goes "wait why didn't I think of that"
I'm pretty sure a Warmain would be really disappointed
Like they'd start out thinking "oh man this is great"
I think it depends on what they're Testing for
Turns out everyone is a weird loser, just like home
Even more of them are weird losers!
The exalts in particular are weird losers!
... better yet, in the process of this the Warmain becomes an object of romantic fixation for so many people who they hate
Oh no
I think the thing to lean into here is that miraculous beings can be pretty absurd even by Exalted standards, but they also don't care about the things Exalted beings generally care about
They also don't power scale in quite the same way
Because miracles are deeply weird
Like 3/4 of these folks could not do anything to stop a Dawn solar from punting them across a continent ... but it also wouldn't really slow them down in any meaningful way
Hmm.
yeah that kinda makes sense to me
Like yeah a warmain probably could raise up an army capable of obliterating all of Creation and march it from one end to the other, killing all in its way but like ... why? Why would it do that? That sounds stupid.
(Strategist seething in the corner hearing that)
It’s tough killing creation
guy who's Dying of Softness:
But yeah. In one quest by Earthscorpion the main character sees essence as flowers. I'm not 100% certain if that was unique to them or a specific tradition
So demons show up and they have heather and gorse flowers. And when we learn about the source of the demons these flowers in retrospect were a hint that the guy who explained stuff was lying
both Strategists and Warmains can do some pretty direct fighting
Strategists are hit and miss when it comes to combat
all of the stats have some real combat applications
Eide has stunt, Greater Talent, cliffhanger and even strategy
Wyrd has destruction, shatter, greater shattering, masking, greater masking, greater destruction and wailing rite
Flore has igniton and greater ignition, and to a lesser extent glorification and greater glorification
Lore has spherecraft, incohation for weird tricks with their sphere, and invocation and infusion
they aren't the best exactly, but they have ways
also Destruction can do a lot
They are but I don’t think a Strategist could necessarily just roll a Dawn in their element without trying, Dawns do have some pretty solid tricks … but I also think it wouldn’t super matter because a Strategist probably would not fight a Dawn in their element
I think its pretty comparable to Vs a Noble
What I'm trying to say is that I don't think a strategist is typically going to beat a combat-specced Solar in an arm-wrestling match
In either case, my view is that excrucians in Exalted would find actual exalts pretty pithy because miracles run on such different rules
but the real question is if this Creation is also still Wrong
It'd be really funny if it weren't
And the strategist ends up entirely on the side of the angels as a result, but in like a tormented way because they brought some of their own Creation's wrongness with them
Comfier at least
Drive a wedge between the Strategists and the rest of the host.
hedge the fang's iconic blast
Another yugioh quote which arguably goes hard:
“Demons”
They are the very definition of the calamities of this world.
An inescapable absurdity.
They deceive humans through all sorts of ways, and by extracting and disposing of their souls, they turn them into living puppets.
For those creatures that only see the need for obedient tools, souls stained with sin are disposable.
Those who steal and those who are stolen from.
Ironically, both coexist in an egalitarian way.
(it's Creature of Delirium)
Otherside Picnic spoilers but I feel like I have to do this:
||```Satsuki Uruma...
- ...is the pioneering explorer of the Otherside
- ...is vaguely unsettling
- ...knows more than you do
- ...knows how to make people do what she wants```||
I have no idea if this is quite the right splat assignment, but it just feels right.
||She's a lot more person-like than most Actuals would be... probably... but also in very weird ways. I could see her as a Deceiver, maybe. I might even be able to see her as a Warmain with the right argument. But she kind of seems like she should be an Actual.||
||I don't mean she's a weird person in the normal sense, to be clear. I mean that she's at least partially a person and at least partially the human representation of the Otherside and it's aggressively unclear where the line is drawn, precisely. She gives people strange and unsettling powers and treasures. She periodically reveals herself to people, causing strange visions. She holds conversations which can almost be understood, but which contain profound knowledge. In order to interact with her meaningfully, it has to be done through a ritual.||
Now I'm wondering if ||Kasumi should also be an Actual. Or if that should be the general splat for Otherside Stuff™️. Kasumi is odd because she communicated in a way which I almost understood, and then started doing something different, because you can almost understand the Otherside, but not quite. You could probably represent her with Actual stats but it'd be a bit of a reach.||
Or Wild. Wild might also work.
Very excited once I get this server together to see what imperator the players will choose for the mimic to mimic
Because it’s less “what metaphysical ideology does your boss impose on you” and now “what social situation are you forcing your boss to exist in with you”
XD
Still thinking about this. Terrified mimic turns out to be way, way better at hidden role games than Exalted Creational beings and ends up running Yu Shan. Frustrated warmain thinks exalts are gonna be way more interesting than they turn out to be and as a result starts to appreciate simpler, less important things. Intense deceiver decides to side with various apocalyptic forces, one by one, before deciding they all suck and overthrowing all of them. Confused strategist discovers this version of Creation isn't wrong and winds up working to protect it and make it better.
That is pretty funny
Life is still super hard for them but y’know, less wrong
So that’s good
Also this provides an excuse to do "Strategist solos an entire Realm army"
Real talk one of my favorite scenes in a campaign log is from ... I think it was Tales of the Wyre?
Where there's a scene of a high-level druid stopping an army in its tracks
Flying over them, controlling the weather, bombarding them with spell after terrible spell
I just posted a link to said log in tabletop
Nice
Anyway I like narratives in which beings get isekai'd from settings that are fully prepared for them to settings that are Very Not
definitely a fun thing to happen
If they are on the side of Ex!Creation, it could also be interesting to have the Strategist oppose some Abyssals
Yeah, although I think the deceiver would do a little more "rampaging across the Underworld and Malfeas"
At least in the way deceivers rampage :D
Strategist: holy shit, this place isn't awful and Wrong
Abyssals: We have to destroy Creation to end the suffering of our masters
Strategist: ...is this what it's like from the other side?
yissssss
Be funny to see how the excrucians interact with wyld beings
Since conceptually they're pretty similar
Strategists uses 20 Wear ability to reshape the Wyld
Strategist becomes a Cauldronist lmao
Deceivers would get along great with the fae I think
from what ive heard that seems about right
I think they would match eachothers freak but also hate eachother
I have invented what I call ‘the skin shop’ for deceivers to pick out second skins
excellent
hehehehehehehe
Are Nobles essentially beleaguered civil service conscripts
Depends on the imperator and their own view of nobility
I think there’s a few angles to what their deal is, that can be one of them
Some Nobles can be jokingly described as “Deceivers with a license”
Personally I like to think of them as more like low-level politicians of their own, since a lot of them have personal ambitions and petty backhacking
they have very high amounts of privilege
and also are forced into particular roles they dont exactly have choices in
theyre super interesting in that regard
Yes
Looking at the Keys in the Avatar Creation chapter of 3e. They are interesting
oooh nice
Any favorites?
So far Key IV Clematis
But the text of the keys are very evocative. Makes me imagine a timeline in which they were expanded on and filled the roles of miraculous arcs
I’m a big fan of Gorse
Gorse enjoyer
get gorsed
is Gorse the same for Nobles as it is for Decievers?
Gorse is great
i dont think it is
oh
they're similar
but also not quite
Given infinite time, energy, and motivation and talent I would make homebrew alternate Nobilis based on Keys.
Nobilis rulebooks dont want to load on phone so can't do too much thinky right now. Like. I dunno.
Hmm. What I imagine. For an alternate universe Nobilis 3e. Domain, Persona, Aspect, and Treasure are replaced with the different keys. Nobles would have a locked in key that resembles Aspect. A limited choice from a set of keys that play off of their Estate. A limited choice from a set of keys that deal with stuff. And then a free choice of key.
An interesting thought
Most of the keys are mainly for like, personality and fleshing out story arcs
Tho in a way as you mentioned, chuubos arcs fill a similar role
Tying stat Nouns into Keys is interesting
Althought I have a soft spot for Nobles whose personality absolutely does nkt match their Estate
Lmao same
Nods.
Big animals for tree of worlds.
Manticore, Perigrine Bears, really big elemental birds, sneaky stealy birds, questing beasts, lamassus, ninja clams, greater apes, deformed lizard insects. And of course Aaron's serpents. And the Ratotoskar someone wrote up on tumblr
I really 3E’s lifepaths as like … perfectly set up to help flesh out characters who are in line within the game’s vibe
Yeah, that’s always a fun angle
Actual idea
Earworm
Failing: repeating itself
Truths:
- is a song
- Is stuck inside your head and won’t get out
- Makes you want to hurt people
Had another idea
The Ghoul
Failing: Hungry
Truths:
- I cannot die
- I have the memories and skills of everyone I have eaten
- I am faster than light
Serpent: Allegorical, Sealed
Ratotoskr (from Tumblr): Prophet, Architect
Manticore: Lore, Hunter
Fomorian: Eide, Deepness
Spiritual Primate: Aspect, Style
Photino Birds: Theft, Gardener
Peregrine Bears: Monstrous, Visage
Questing Beast: Holy, Wyrd
Lamassu: Adept, Flore
Sphinx?: Persona, Wounded
Phoenix: Domain, Symbolic
Oh? What is this?
I can paralyze you by hitting you Kappa
Ah, D&D 2e Ghouls
So deadly.
Oooo that is another fun one, though you could integrate that into their Style
The Hidden World Of Posioners
Other big divine animals of the World Ash. With arcs
Fun
Its soooo fucked
Keep in mind the way Actuals work they get these as Very Strong geas/afflictions
Sphinx is maybe getting replaced by something else. Too much overlap with Manticore and Lamassu
Do they all also have Vastness and Wanderer or is 4 stats serpent exclusive
Waaat Sphinx is not like Manticore and Lamassu at all
I mean they all have lion bodies but Sphinx is the only one that does riddles
as far as I remember
All have wanderer and vastness. Lamassu and Manticore are now in process of absorbing vibes formerly belonging to Sphinx. Persona/Wounded will now go to... Hippocampus. Something fishy becauase fish dont have good representation.a
Link to tumblr things with the Ratatoskar and a few other things like Demons
The thing with big word ash animals is that by trying to come up with Arc assignments for many animal types is that the last few are always the hardest.
Alright everyone I have a pitch for how to stat out an actual in nobilis 3e
No stats but can buy gifts
15CP baseline but can go up to 30 points like npc deceivers
Noble level health I think
8 skill points
35 points of bonds and afflictions and if an affliction is higher than 6 you treat it like a Greater Emulation
I like to imagine that the Rule views the Game as their eternal enemies while the Game thinks of the Rule as their somewhat stuffy neighbors who keep on coming up with ideas which are cool because they inevitibly go horribly wrong.
The trick is that both of them genuinely hate each other, but for Gamers, "I genuinely hate you" isn't a dealbreaker for any sort of dynamic
just like real gamers
There is. One idea I had for a Strategist was dying of mummification. They were a weird mashup.
Oooo
… oh god this is a deep cut these days but I have a perfect Strategist in fiction
Himawari from xxxHolic
i unfortunately dont know this one
was that a CLAMP manga
It was
Himawari is a girl cursed with bad luck
Like
Extremely bad luck
But the luck doesn’t hit her personally
It affects everything she touches
Only she and her parents are safe
Catastrophe swirls around those who get close to her
Obviously that’s not 1-to-1
For a strategist
But it has the right vibe
nice nice
Average Nobilis PC tbh
...vaguely reminiscent of the protagonist of Undead Unluck, except that it only hits people she touches (usually), and her parents weren't immune to it.
yes, but I'm mad you got that read on me while I was typing. (Or, rather, I feel called out.)
gk's powers of foresight are strong
XD
I did wonder if they were strategists! But, despite all the Negators being cursed (for... varying values of cursed, ranging from "this has completely ruined any chance I have at a normal life" to "this is mildly inconvenient under extremely contrived circumstances ||which are invariably the circumstances under which I received these powers||"), the fact that some of them can basically live normal lives and simply Not Use their power... sort of derails that. Also, not all of the powers are externally destructive; one of the two main characters has the titular power of Undead, which makes him giga immortal, and while that's still a curse it's not really the kind of thing he can inflict on other people.
...llike, one guy's power is ||power copying|| and it appears to be totally voluntary. How is that a curse?
I guess I can kind of indirectly see it actually, and will move this to #book-club.
The mummy strategist. Is sometimes an ancient λgyptian archaeologist, sometimes a magical warrior-prince, amd sometimes a power rangers villain.
He left the whole war against creation because someone stole his (physical) heart which really messed up his Wyrd.
oooooh
lmao
The problem with Nobilis is that I want all the stats
All of them
Give them to me
I am shifting things around, currently I'm looking at Aspect 1/Domain 4/Persona 0/Treasure 3
Corrosive Presence
Greater Unfettering 10
Automatic (+1)
Local (-1)
One Trick (-5)
Uncommon (+1)
Total Cost: 6 CPThere is something in your words, your actions, your very presence. An insidious poison, a fire those who listen to you cannot shake. The more time anyone spends in your presence the more it affects them, though with a bit of attention you might focus the influence on someone in particular. It corrupts their thoughts, or perhaps you prefer to say it enlightens them, to a terrible truth they can no longer deny.
The world is Wrong.
Mortals will often succumb in the face of this truth and renounce their ties to Creation or even glitch themselves, though a few might still stand tall and prevail. The Nobilis may be shaken, having to grapple with this revelation, but can resist the influence if they apply their willpower, for a time at least.
had the inspiration for an evil gift, and thought I'd also put it here
nice
I kind of envision that a lot of Bright Lords as being associated with things that are good on paper. Then the dark gets involved
Whoch is why I like the idea of the Dark actually having a positive view of the Bright. Because the Bright has all sorts of big ideas that don't work out
Hah
Lmao
Bright Lords mad that Shadow of Mordor exists and they never actually copyrighted their title.
So that’s why they changed it to Rule
“Time to blow up Warner bros”
I dont know why but light lord always sounded awkward to me. Bright lord though works much better
brightlord works pretty well
i just personally love Rules
I do like rules and game, yeah
They’re less … grandiose, in some ways snippier
And less favorable to light
The snippiness suits them well
Imo
Also the dichotomy, I think, more directly communicates what they're about
also its means you can call Game Lords Gamers
You can hear rules and game and get that there's something about freedom and control to that
Also that yeah lol
It is extremely funny to talk about "gamers" doing something outlandish and horrific
Gamers voted most likely to betray the world
I feel there have to have been a few rogue Gamelords
well, gamers are always telling you to kill yourself so not much change there
Is it okay to make philosophy jokes if you arent actually that familiar with philosophy?
if you get it wrong, it's a learning opportunity
Yeah that's correct
What I remember from ghe deceivers in depth document. Which has write ups for Deepness, Theft, and Deceiver Sealed.
Deepness
0-1 cant remember exactly but had a thing to check how real things were.
2 was slightly odd power to push people away.
3 was the signature deepness withdraw from world.
4-5 forgot
6 is establish a set of properties in a region with the greater variation of 2 doing anti properties.
7 had the enlightening people thing.
8 allowed yout to adjust a set of effects you could give to people.
There was definitely things related to tweaking your manifestation in the world, messing around with abstractions. Stuff.
Sealed, honestly I forgot a lot of it. But there was a decent amount of early stuff about sharing your experience. 2 was a charisma power which made dislikiking the character take effort. 5 was the level which let you actually use someone elses miracles. 8 was for swapping second skins.
Theft.
0-1 forgot.
2 utilize weymarks, similar to what Lore has at 2.
3 had shapeshifting.
4 was Extraction which seems a good place for it
5 I didnt quite understand.
6-7 forgot
8 Let you set destinies for people whose weymark had been stolen. I think. I know that the level 12 version had wishes/psuedo-wishes.
You can check the Chuubo's arcs; the cross-conversion chart (with links to the relevant pages) is pinned, or otherwise those are Awakening, Creature of Delirium, and Reality Syndrome respectively.
The two gentlemen standing in front of me are either hoteps or Excrucians and I am choosing to believe Excrucians
Oh dear
@quasi patrol
Two immaculately stylish young black men with a mix of modern Western and faux-historical Middle Eastern/North African clothes, supplemented by extremely prominent jewelry with Ancient Egyptian imagery. Looked amazing. Asked one of my coworkers a bunch of really uncomfortable questions.
They looked so fucking cool I think they might have been Warmains
God
Nobilis headcanon: Wisconsin is the world’s largest lacunae
(Lacuna is the singular)
Ah
Ohio is the biggest Mimic Chancel
Meme Ohio or normal Ohio?
Both work but
It is the passive wrongness of the Mimic that makes rhe answer both at the same time, bleeding and melding together at times
Counterpoint: the entirety of the prosaic earth
They both exist, you just need to know how to get there (or not get there)
I had an idea once. Just a bunch of mimics all made by an incompetent Excrucian.
You could play that really hard for tragedy
"This one turned out to be harmless. The Warmain thought, 'is gay' would make a suitable blasphemy"
Like ... I dunno did you ever watch Steven Universe?
There's a whole plotline about ||collections of gem shards that have been stuck together manifesting a variety of horrible, misshapen forms||
And it leads to the revelation that ||there's an enormous one in the planetary core, which will explode the Earth if it manifests||
And that leads to the revelation ||that the gem shards are unspeakably lonely and in pain||
So what if you had an Excrucian leaving behind a trail of half-formed mimics in the same way?
Dang. Poor things.
Ultimately Steven is ||able to put the shards in psychic contact with one another so they don't need to reach blindly for each other anymore||
||Granting them some measure of peace||
:3
It's a good storyline
Mimic chancel shaping up nicely
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
There was a perch jackson/glitch crossover fic. The aithor talked about maybe modeling the strategist version of Percy with a pair of really strong gifts. One which automatically made him not exist. And another which slightly stronger one that made it seem like he existed.
The author, Ryuugi, thinks that the WBH is too expensive. I think it should just be allowed increased narrative flexibility.
And also that Strategist Immortality could be interpreted in a weird way
oh lmao
oh shit a ryuugi fic?
lmao
Nods. Like most of his fics it is dead
yeah
hes got a bad update habit but like
i mean hes doing it for fun so i aint judging
Nods. He writes some real fun stuff.
WBH is expensive, but it also can do a lot if you get creative with it
It can kiiiiind of be an omnitool
You can destroy specific emotions for social influence, f'rinstance
(In a pinch you can try erasing the absence of something, but that, usually doesn't work out so smoothly)
it sometimes works, but not as reliably yeah
you can also do stuff like erasing the distance between things, for The Hand shenanigans
i find this passage next to wbh's description useful for getting a sense of wbh's utility
destroy your own visibility/sound
Its why I mentioned narrative flexibility. Hmm. Birb. Sleepy.
The. Different sirld miraculous bige animals I brainstormed. I find the phoenix/elemental bird idea funny. Just immense birds who are pretty much all in on whatever element all yhe time
If I am going to make up wacky animals I whpuld make up wacky personalities as well. Will do
i do like phoenix but it can be any element
I am suddenly remembering somethng which is, awkwardly enough, from Scoob and Shag (which is kind of extremely Jojo's): ||one character's power is Dead Air, which creates clouds of staticky white noise which erase anything they touch other than the user... so they use it to erase air in front of them to create a vacuum to pull them around and let them fly.||
For another thing, which I feel like could be modeled in a way which is not Reality Syndrome, but which I keep feeling like should be modeled as Reality Syndrome: the ability to manifest Zeno's Paradox (i.e. the dichotomy paradox), whereby in order to traverse any distance, one must first travel half that distance, ad infinitum, and so there cannot be any logical "first step" taken because any finite travel distance can be halved and thus motion is an illusion.
There's a character who actually has this as their power, who primarily uses it as a way to stop attacks (including some which otherwise cannot be blocked or avoided), but who also uses it at one point to stop someone from running away, and at one point to create privacy by making it impossible for sound to leave a specific little bubble. It actually ends up blocking any attack that would hurt them, not just attacks directed at them, when used defensively. Yes, this has shockingly similar consequences to the Stand ||Gold Experience Requiem||.
I want it to be Reality Syndrome for Cheating reasons, but also it feels strongly Chthonic, not Miraculous. It's establishing a new rule: "Movement is an illusion".
Why do the Zu have Star Quality rather than Become Somebody? I thought a big part of cultivation fic was etching yourself into reality and establishing your identity, but not as much about making the world into their story? Plus cultivators charming people is A Thing sometimes, and Become Somebody (Façade) has that.
Wait is Dimentio an Excrucian?
From Super Paper Mario
Become Somebody is sort of the Actual iconic stat, like Accursed for strategists and Spiritual for nobles
I can definitely see the argument though
The other big thing to consider is that Jenna categorized their Persona as a treasure stat, which implies its what they use to connect to other people and the world around them
They might be really into using Bindings and Enchantments to teach other people cool martial arts and shit
Considering his goals and demeanor, absolutely
My brain randomly hops between ideas. Never actually developing them.
A few days ago I made a joke about Beige Miraculous Arcs which are about being places.
Immortal Beige==> I was already here.
Frantic Beige==>How do I get in here.
Sickly Beige==> Help I am trapped here.
ooooooh
Quest Miracle: Redecoration Rite. Establish a region property
Problem is that the limited amount of thought I have put into this is that I am not certain how serious of a joke this idea is.
The problem is that what you're trying to do is probably accomplished via either Silver arcs, Green arcs (especially Called Away), or A Keeper Of Gardens, depending on what version of it fits best.
Nods that makes sense. Part of the reason if I ever did anything with this it might be a primarily a joke.
Fanmade miraculous arcs. There is one website with a few. Two of them were made to represent Specific splats, Darklords and Warmains. Which were interesting.
One of them is an amusing imo frantic blue arc about having a job somewhere sketchy
Oh neat
