this is fascism
meh, ensures party variety
From what I know all of us players like the same role generally speaking
even then like 5e is so playable that you can manage with a party of all fighters or all rogues or two wizards and two clerics or one barbarian and three sorcerers
He has also included guns
So I am very tempted to go Kensei instead
and just
be a fucking monk sky pirate
Kensei sharpshooter monk is fun, do it
Or Mercy Gunner monk so you have healing utility
Fun fact mercy monk is one of the only reliable ways to remove stun
space elves with stupid haircuts gang
lol
hell yeah
Hearing good things about the 2024 GM's guide
no variant rules lol
Oh yeah this guy is a kensei monk with a bolt action btw
Cuz guns exist
Fuckit
So no variant human?
I like the 2024 guide
How's it looking?
im eager to see how they handle the "fully written exploration section" mostly, and the bastion stuff is neat
the idea of tracker sheets for new DMs also seems promising
Oh that is good
I FUCKING MADE SPACE ELF SHAGGY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
HAHAHAHAHA
proud of you
no, but backgrounds fill that bit of customization now
thank god v-human is dead
Wdym?
its overcentralizing design for a feat
They said you can just pull over stuff from the 2014 version so could I just get custom lineage for two feats?
but now you just get a feat as part of your background
If your DM allows it
i would not personally allow 2024+vhuman
And custom lineage?
I also use custom lineage bc it allows me to have more freedom with species n all
I've never allowed that in my own games so i cant say
How come you didn’t allow it (sorry if I’m asking too many questions)?
Theres like 40 species to pick from already, if you cant pick one from all those options I don't know what to tell you
but also im reducing overhead and range of stuff i have to deal with as DM
Wdym by overhead range?
The less optional stuff I am juggling as DM, the easier it is for me to DM, since DMing in D&D is already a lot of work.
Alr, thx for answering!
this is so fucking real
my setting has like 30+ canonical species, some with subraces, and i give everyone a level 1 feat because 5e is easy anyway and that lets me make combats more ch alleging and dynamic, so if you really don’t wanna play anything i have to offer you can find a different table
For any who have the patience to read it
I tried to make ranger good for my in person 5e group and want some opinions and constructive feedback
So far no problems have cropped up (due to there only being a sessions worth of play testing)
But I wanna be sure
Fbaul ranger revisions. Favored Enemy1st-level Ranger feature Through rigorous training, you’ve honed your skills in tracking, understanding, and battling certain types of foes. At 1st level, choose a Favored Enemy from the list below. This choice grants you the following benefits: Skill Profic...
Mood, I'm trying to keep it down to 6 personally.
basically just cutting out any that are "Human but X"
Before you ask the alternative to spellcasting is there because it was a request from the group who want there to be an option to aragornmaxx
i kinda get you
i guess my original plan was it was very low fantasy. humans elves dwarves halflings
but that just doesn’t play in practice when you’re running 5e. it’s too eclectic by design
so i figure that the continent that my current campaigns are set on, upper gloria, is that part of the world. and the rest of the world has a bunch of wacky shit in it
I handle that with just having lots of cultures
It also comes from hating "The Elf Kingdom" or "Orc Tribe"
same
are there perish tribes? sure
are there perish feudal societies? orcish theocracies? yes
one of the biggest powers in my world is (well, was) a hobgoblin-centric religious empire whose primary demographics otherwise were dwarves and dragonborn and humans
the face of a sky pirate kensei who gets drunk and also high
badass
He is following in the great and hallowed milieu of jack sparrow and hondo onaka
You guys think I can mix the atavist with the original necromancer?
What’s an atavist?
gonna be real I don't think most people are gonna know random homebrew
Basically a half caster based on sacrificing HP to be able to go at the enemy
Fair enough mb, someone here just told me about it in the first place
No not really but it’s more the flavour aspect
It’s con based
Huh
My immediate shout'd be Sorcerer then
Iiiiii wish my internet wasn't hot garb rn
Oh mb I need to clarify even more, what I meant is take the flavour and ideas from the atavist and put it together with the wizard school of necromancy for something new (with credit of course)
? XD
I didn’t read correctly
that was to the thing you deleted lol
um
I mean I would have to see it but based on immediate vibes
I didn’t see the my
Sacrificing blood for necromantic effects seems On Brand ™️
also the character I’m making is like a guy with some really strong or fucked up powers (dm said he likes making players strong)
But he carries around really expensive candy for children
i LOVE hot garb
lol
I love rolling stats
Very balanced
monk moment
Would appreciate some attention and help here
same. i always make people roll
fuck balance
if i wanted balance i wouldn’t be playing d&d
or at least 5e
im a point buy guy
Point Buy lets players make meaningful choices
I’m a 3d6 down the line
I'm of the "roll 4d6 drop the lowest, for each stat" enjoyers
I do 4d6 drip lowest in order, based on what I get will determine my class. Unless I'm joining an already running game, then I will play what is needed and place stats where they fit best.
it’s a game with the swingiest die imaginable as its core resolution mechanic
i vote let the player choice come in the non-rolling department
Yes. Like Point Buy
On'kor Dohna, Githyanki Way of the Kensei Monk
some low power gaming! how do they like that?
i guess i mostly stick to point buy to keep balance and RAW in mind, makes it easier for me and easier to players to play what they want
It's fun for the most part. Eventually you will get a character with all 5s and 6s but darwinism usually kills them off. It's very satisfying to have a character be successful though against the odds.
Very different from my games for sure
I'm a OSR guy what can I say
My dm had us do roll 4d6 drop lowest but had us do it 10 times for each 6 spreads, and had us choose which spread to use
Thats fun
sup
thinking about the big city
they get there
it’s uhh
like a week into the start of summer
10/91 days in i reckon
safe average
maybe 15 ish
ok,fixed the pronouns
i’m thinking the summer festival is underway, then in a month it’s the centenary festival
they’ll need i’m thinking 500 gold each to enter the tournament
which is only 5000 silver
but they’ll have to work out a way to get that
Tax collecting or robbing tax collectors
5e question
Two-weapon fighting explicitly excludes ranged weapons for the bonus action attack, which is shitty and frankly really fucking stupid, but would offhanding a melee allow for two-weapon fighting?
yea
the 2024 rules are different now tho
two weapon fighting i think in 2024 allows for hand crossbow shenanigans but disallows regular+regular and regular+light, but allows light+light
with the right weapon masteries though you can have three attacks without a bonus action with two lights
Issue being, I'm planning on two non-lights
I know I need Dual-Wielding Master at least
I'm just hoping that I can shoot the pistol and then swing the offhand sword rather than swinging the sword and shooting the offhand pistol
if you have Extra Attack you can attack with two different weapons its doable
Gunner lets you ignore the free hand requisite too
Eh, I'm making a sword and pistol artificer, so that already isn't a concern
Repeating Shot go brrrrrrrrrrt
Apparently my introduction to the party is gonna be as part of a fancy ball the party is attending
Given I'm a githyanki, and one who is intent on exploring and enjoying all the material plane has to offer, probably invited to show up as some sort of oddity
One of the characters is a bard and will be performing as well
there’s a fun one
they can do some work for the iron hand
which is like a fighters guild type situation
this seems fun imo imma steal this
Could have them turn up thier nose at all the food on offer. Since they might not be used to eating.
Nah he's lived on the material plane long enough to both have to have eaten and find it fun
Fair
downtime today
the old souflios house went up in smoke (again)
literally a level 1-3 rite of passage in my games now
and so did folier’s hunting lodge
so setille is without any black powder now
and the local law enforcement are looking into it
and he’s fucked
serious brain damage
Readers may remember our terrific run with Handiwork Games’ a|state earlier this year. Just a great, smart game all around. Designer Morgan Davie took an old Forge-era indie fave and reframed it with Forged in the Dark tech, then went on to add several sharp quality of life improvements to the FitD framework as well.… Continue reading FiveEvil: ...
this is neat
All has gone according to plan
I now have a full table for my Odyssey of the Dragonlords game
niiiiiiice
We have a Circle of Stars Druid Medusa
She has a familiar and she's debating which one
And the winning vote is a snake that fell out of her hair
Yeah, we're having our Session 0 in a few weeks
nice
So far we have a Water Genasi probably Rogue
Druid of Stars Medusa with the Cursed One Path
A Monk of unknown race just yet
Goliath with the Demi-God Path
dumb fuck campaign idea "We're ripping off the Deltora quest series of books"
hell yes
cook
I mean you havea clear objectif "get pretty stone" a BBEG called the Lord of Darkness, a bunch of monster
and it's already post apo fantasy
you can even rip off the books for the pûzzle
Yee, it's a good source
next up we're fiwing The Knights of Emerald serie
you guys think sorcerer or wizard is better for a subclass that will mix a bit of melee with mostly spellcasting, with themes of necromancy but also mind manipulation type stuff
sorcerer
i would go warlock
mind manipulation is a aberrant mind speciallty but i don't think sorcerer have a dedicated spell and sorcery subclass
wizzard has one but i'm not sure it's adapted to what you ar doing
you couls also multiclass
I love the gunner feat being relevant in the game I'm joining
Oh how so
In that gun proficiency is readily available and guns dont have the reload detriment?
In that guns are reasonably prevalent but the Gunner feat or being an artificer is how you gain proficiency in all firearms, with crossbow expert giving you pistols
Ah okay i misread that as "irrelevant"
Not relevant
Most of the party has pistol proficiency or is a melee specific class or caster
lol
I believe I am the one bringing long guns to the table
+1 to dex is nice too
yes all my stats get to be even now :3
is there a way to make characters who fight with both strength and dex viable?
Giant belt-
also, last night i had a dream where someone was fighting people with three longswords, but the longswords were justified in a very video gamey/dnd rules-y way
Thri kreen
not exactly
it was funny because in the dream ithought "why don't you just zoro it?" and she didn't
thinkin. about. the gods.
thinking about the draconic island adventure the party can run
basically when the emperor dies the city will lock down. they can either wait that out OR smuggle themselves out by working for one of two criminals
- lucius laquaine, a pirate aspiring to greatness
- scarmiglione abrutto, a gnome looking to climb the ladder
either they’ll be going to an exotic island to find treasure or they’ll be asked to uhhhhh [something less cool but still fun]
dragon island i’m thinking
big dragon theming
tortle island villagers, abandoned research station from the glorian empire, hostile animals on the island, antagonistic villagers or hunter gatherer types? something else kind wierd probably
give us real answers man
like something that we can take for sure for free because the rules say so
Barbarian Rogue who attacks with Strength but since they can't wear heavy armor they partially defend with Dex
You can do this with a normal Barbarian too but Barbarian Rogue gets the "fusion" effect across better imo
oh true....
the play with Barb Rogue is crit fishing and sneak attack
dual wield, reckless attack
i have one extra dot there that's how uknow i'm getting progressively more and more pensive
lowkey highkey yeah no on god no cap yeah no yeah lowkey
To up your odds of getting a sneak crit, don't trigger sneak attack on your first swing unless it's a crit
i did the math for that
but you can ignore it if that's too unintuitive
as a side effect: if you're ever not dual-wielding, you are now an absurdly good grappler (Athletics Expertise)
i wanna do shit that Does Not make sense. i wanna make a character who carries around a rapier and a greatsword. a character who duels with a spear as their offhand. i want wacky awesome bullshit. i intend to find it
wicked and tubular
Rapier and greatsword is doable if you know how to juggle free actions with drawing/stowing/picking up weapond
If youre using 2024 warlock, a level 1 dip for a pact weapon that shapeshifts with a BA also works
ooh i've never thought about shapeshifting pact weapons that's neat
i'm mostly worried about narratively how to have a character use one weapon (to the degree of looking like a competent swordsman) and then pull out another while still being equally if not more competent with that weapon
Consummate professional weaponmaster
practice a thousand weapons once versus practicing one weapon a thousand times? No. Practice a thousand weapons a thousand times
Something like that
roll-wise
i know i can justify it like NARRATIVELY narratively, but what i meant was would my rolls and numbers justify it
like it's a role playing game yadda yadda, but disconnects between what characters are supposed to be and what the dice make them do can really take u out of the game
Hey what would be a good boss for a mow level (1 to 3) level party ?
Illusionist Wizard (MotM version)
err level 3 imo
its got potent damage and ways to delay an inevitable walloping (various illusion spells that you can replace if you wish)
quick question, what do you guys think of the following character concept:
Rogue assassin, field medic but also combatant, so the character is very good at anatomy and all, but can also use idk bandages or something
Mercy Monk
depends on the party's builds, any magic items, and if this boss will have adds/mobs with it
https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/3Tic8J_eKBNN
ranger revisions im working on for my uni group
feedback is appreciated
i think i wanna start working on a whole ass He (harry edition) rule book including the world details and stuff
Do y'all think it would be unbalanced to just
Ignore the two-weapon fighting rule of "It can ONLY be with melee weapons"
...I don't really understand why it exists to begin with tbh
What, were they so worried about rogues getting all of one extra chance to proc sneak attack that they had to just ruin it for everyone?
Ranged weapons are better because you dont have to be next to the guy stabbing you to death, partly
some balance niceties and all that
also if anyone is ruining ranged weapons its fighters
glances at spellcasters
i dont think it would really hurt any homegame balance if you arent sticking to fully RAW anyways
as long as someone isnt munchkinning it to hell and back or w/e
Not sure how you could munchkin something like this anyway
crossbow expert is a hell of a drug
gonk
lmao
I am joining a party of a kenku* (humblewood corvum race) arcane trickster, an owlin bard/warlock, a dragonborn cleric/sorcerer, a goliath barbarian, and an elf paladin
sup
i’m now realising the imminence of the city that the party will reach at the end of session 4
so
who wants to help me prep and plan some stuff for that city?
What's the basic premise
it’s the capital city of the province, one of the “big three” cities of the cadric league. so one of the largest cities in the empire. and it’s summer. and the emperor will be here for the centenary of his rule soon
you need a big ass church
when the players arrive, they’ll be separated from the priestess they’re escorting, who will be escorted by the duke’s people
oh buddy
and a hot springs
the cathedral of mollebourg is one of the wonders of the church
dóthtown (like little italy or chinatown but for dwarves) has hot public baths, and have lent this technology to those living in the fancy parts of town too
i can finally be at peace. the campaign is real. i have written in character correspondences between the characters in my world
Robots, horseless chariots, cool trains, self-propelled boats
i actually don’t think it’s super that. you want marvels and wonders you go to majeckell or caspia, you want imperious splendour you go to mollebourg or cadris, you want technical achievements you go to nachter
noted for nachter
mollebourg is very much a sprawling metropolis of the empire. very much a melting pot. has a dense urban sprawl with a layer beneath for a more unsavoury element. has docks and fields both. has a castle and a cathedral and a colosseum.
houses the halls of inquisition. the archives of inquisition
the cathedral of saaaaaaint
hm. need a saint name
matthias
Wamly
nice try crab nerd
can you read this
if this shows up then these are those letters i was talking about
Aye
adding a fun bonus plot hook to the mollebourg of it all
tying in to the stuff from this starting town “tutorial area” AND the bard’s backstory
So big markets huh?
biiiig markets!
and exclusive guild businesses. magic shops accessible to members of the circle, the magic guild. specialised weapon and armour shops accessible to members of the iron hand, the kind of fighters/mercenaries guild
but then plenty of other stuff, everything under the sun in cities like this. and black markets underground too
thinking the party will likely end up staying in dóthtown, on the north side of town just within the walls
which is a nice working class area of dwarves
they’ve got a recommended place to stay: the hammer hearth inn, where their brief bounty hunter friend was actually raised (he didn’t tell them as much!)
but they can get a discount there if they mention rupert, said npc, sent them
which is right next to the dwarven temple
there are two dwarven gods in this setting, named stón and skae
effectively ordinus and exogarus from the imperial pantheon
which are the two patriarch gods
law and chaos
thinking about religion now
lux primus is a kind of messiah-lite role, of which there are one for each of the approved gods, and the party know one
then they have a pope and a high benefactor, usually an elected archbishop and the ruling emperor
and then there are archbishops, elected among bishops for each province
and then there are bishops, then deacons, then abbots/abbesses and their priors/prioresses, then priests (fathers, mothers) and acolytes (brothers, sisters)
e z
dwarves have priests
dwarves get it
be like dwarves
Do they all have a council or something or are they doing their own things
no they have meetings
not sure of their frequency
once every few years seems reasonable though. and lots of them show up to big events such as ascensions of new popes, coronations, stuff like what’s gonna happen in mollebourg, big trials if relevant and nearby, etc
but they mostly act independently within the church
and sometimes are sent to do stuff on behalf of the empire. diplomacy. military stuff. healing those who are facing plague or blight
My cousin's partner's kenku has the funniest voice oh my god
your cousin in law
not technically married yet but they are engaged lol
okay so i wasn’t far off
Mmmm Kemku
bird people
ayo?
It was not but some weird political stuff happened lol
A ball seems like a really bad place to do a coup. Firstly you can’t really get many of your dudes in and weaponry wise you’re also screwed. Also how are you actually seizing anything to hold power after you kill the leader.
Conversely, everyone important is likely to be there.
You can have the "real" coup happening simultaneously while you eliminate leadership and declare victory
Right but the important people have guards and panic rooms and escape passages etc since generally the person in charge hosts parties
Which turns into an advantage if the host is on your side
But the coup is against the person in charge
So, there was a fine tradition of traveling to other lords places in order to strategically drain some of their resources
step has figured out the secret most important part of the plan
Fair, a macbeth situation
Everyone in the room got charmed, but it turned out to be a ‘the princess of another kingdom can’t control her charm powers’ situation
Dnd was funny today
The dumbass Druid decided to touch the ORB OF UNFATHOMABLE FEAR AND AGONY
Twice after I touched it
Turns out it only stuns you the first time you touch it
So now he plans on using it as a improvised weapon
Because dc13 int save or stunned is comically good
hard images
played tonight, the fourth of five downtime sessions
it was the best of times it was the down of times
the big bad guy, already in jail, escaped because of the paladin
the lawful good paladin let the chaotic neutral at best renegade paladin go free from his cell, out of a kind of pity
wild
but also because he gave him the information he wanted
he has been demoted. to chaotic good at best, if not chaotic neutral
an act of extreme self interest
good / evil: scale from selflessness to selfishness, also from love to hate
law / chaos: scale from order and structure to a lack of that and randomness, also rules versus power
someone chaotic evil, to me, is someone self interested who thinks might makes right. someone on the opposite end is someone whose interests are selfless who believes that authority should derive from more than simply strength and power, but a code of ethics
someone neutral is someone just going through the moshe
anyway point is, gonna give the pally an angry dream
because the gods are mad
lightly
but this puts everything back on the map in an interesting way, as it was also a kindness
so. the party are going places
maaaaannnn rly good vibes from this campaign
was talking earlier with one of them that whenever they complete a sizeable chunk of content, like enough to close a book in a metaphorical sense and say those characters got used to a new status quo, we’d take a little break and run some smaller self contained adventures and one shots
What do you guys think of the reborn?
they're okay
What are those?
Undead but playable
yeah, they're really just a step above revenants in terms of sapience I find
What about plasmoid thief?
What ranger subclass?
havent decided
What about gloom stalker?
well I plan to pick up the Seraph transformation from grim hollow
so im not exactly gonna be in much darkness
Ah
Then why not cleric or divine soul? (If this ain’t helpful I’d go ranger if there’s a good subclass from a 3rd source if not I’d go with swashbuckler
Seraph uses wisdom, and there are things that fuse nicely with Seraph-Ranger
more damage, extra attacks, etc
But isn’t ranger like monk level bad?
Ah
and monks are fine
The only martial I’ve like so far was paladin
rangers and monks just need slightly more specific builds to be good
unlike other classes which are good no matter WHAT you do
rangers and monks are a little more restricted
meanwhile monks over here can one-shot Tiamat
I still fuck my wizards up
With an int of 18

I’ve only played variant humans, custom lineage, warforged and like one other species iirc
I like custom lineage bc I can say: Human but with dark vision
Shoutout kobolds
I will do Tucker proud
In one round
you can run up to an enemy, booming blade sneak attack them, then skitter away whilst STILL having a Bonus Action to do stuff
Kobold Swashbucklers are peak
I just remembered my first and last encounter with kobolds
I was in a cave with two other guys then all of a sudden someone yeets a rock at me
Eldritch blast saved me
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/IT_WAS_DM_136030827.pdf
Just made a lvl 10 2024 Druid for a oneshot what do you guys think?
the sea druid look cool
i'm actually working on my deltora campaign an read the books plot and Shifting sands is not a lot about the shiftiung sands... more about the weird toutnament
should focus more on the tournament of keep the desert bit ?
did it gang
wrapped up an arc of the campaign with the five downtime sessions
over only two weeks
so that’s 3 full group sessions and 5 individual sessions in the span of two months
onto session 4!!!!
so. how do you make a session of half travel interesting
a table to randomly generate 4 or 5 encounters on the roadside.
hisssss
i want one set piece combat, farmers attacked by a pair of ankhegs
and then a few idle roleplaying encounters
maybe a dog starts following them
like dropping them a stray
maybe i introduce that subplot someone suggested with the pet crow that spies on them
as long as you don't do a goblin you're golden
The "Boblin the Pet Goblin"
If a player ever does that at my table I'm melting all their dice into a giant triangle
Gun is also an accurate reaction
one of those Quirky DnD Things that vexes me
Shoutout Pille Nillson my goat for deciding goblins were uncapturable in Mork Borg
This was the reason he gave for it.
they tried to steal a gnome
the gnome does not come with them
characters? no
they didn’t try to steal the gnome
the players joked about it in that way that starts as a joke and gradually became much less of a joke
mostly work banter though
Havent cracked open my borg in a while, what does the text say?
treasure from the time in setille, the party have:
- a potion of fire breathing
- spiked gauntlets (for punching)
- moderately sized barrel of pickles
- fine formalwear
- statue of an evil god
- four-volume set of a historical romance fiction series known as the crimson tapestry (smutty)
- pocket guide to the empire (not smutty)
- two healing potions
- a climbing potion
- unidentified bracers
- stolen and retouched light plate mail
- amulet of thoughts or whatever it is
- boots of striding n springing
- adamantine chain shirt
- no gnome
- scroll of ice storm (they are level 3)
thoughts (and prayers?)
It was in an interview but the reason goblins have the curse is so you can’t keep them alive as pets because the author hated that trope
Valid, i dont like the trope either
i don’t mind having goblin. like. friends
you help a goblin tribe or clan or crime family or regular family out of a jam. sure. they might scratch ur back
but the whole “can we keep it” whenever i introduce a goofball is dumb
The fucked up power dynamics of murdering a goblin's entire family, press ganging them into slavery and gaslighting them into liking you is
i have more sympathy for a party torturing an NPC for information than stringing along a creature of dubious willingness
Eugh
You know, while I can see how that is a conclusion that's arrived at.
It's pretty much a group deciding they like a little guy almost every time.
oh 100%
but the point is more like
The lightest version of that
yeah. sure. you can keep it. hire it
i do sorta wanna do a baby yoda thing at least once. cute magical baby needs rescued from eclectic monstrous thugs
Have you guys actually run into a group that goes "We killed your entire family, but you're our pet now!"
Because I... Just haven't.
"You're my friend now, we're getting soft tacos later" sure
once but the idea is pretty dark
lots of this
or at least
some of this
lots by comparison
“can we keep it?”
cat. dog. dog. bird. cat. cat. weasel. frog. bullywug. some kind of dragon. undead hand. cranium rat. baby purple worm. kenku. pig. imp. quasit. and now. gnome
It happens
Possibly not That much but it happens
i was a late addition to a rime game and my party did that with a duergar
anyway moving past the getting angry about tabletop games economy
with no gnome to keep
Granted none of us were good people (everyone rolled a pirate for some goddamn reason, individually) but still
two words buddy
rime. and maiden
okay so
need to think about the road into the city of mollebourg
they’ll go through leshays to get into town, and then part ways with the lux primus as she is escorted to the castle by the duke’s people. they will then be able to find lodging
and take in the sights sounds n smells
Still thinking of the mopdule I wanna play, forever outside my purview
Yep
also what software is this?
Is 173 a lot of HP for a lvl 10?
for a PC? in my experience, yeah
So 103 is also decent then
Cuz I got a Druid with 103 HP and he has a Elemental gem with an Earth Elemental
So that should be enough chunk to survive most effects i hope
forget the name but it’s online. been using it for years now
anyway session 4:
- 10th day of summer, party heads out. day six of their time together.
- need to reach mollebourg, which is three days away 10-11, 11-12, 12-13, arrive on the 13th in the early evening/late afternoon
- escort mission, accompanying lux primus lissoria to the capital of mollebranque
- end of the second day they will stop off at a roadside inn for lodgings and food
- during the second day is likely when i will have the ankheg encounter take place
- they are provisioned well for the circumstances, though some of them are running low on rations, so they may need to share, or acquire food mid-journey through hunting and trade
SO
need a few benign random encounters
i’ll say d6
got so far:
- stray dog
- travelling merchant
As in like, just random stuff they can find on the way? How big we talking?
should present a roleplaying opportunity, environmental obstacle, worldbuilding flourish, combat opportunity if provoked to be so (but starting passive) or some combination thereof
-Lost familiar/animal companion
-Remains of a previous camp with something forgotten
-A minstrel out in search of inspiration
-A wizard/witch in some variety of traveling home (I once did this with a large crab that had a small hut on its back)
i like number 2
His name was Nairos, a traveling potionmaker and scroll scribe, and he lived on the back of an exceedingly large hermit crab who had taken his hut as its home, and he just kinda ran with it.
don’t like number 3 because i would hate to see a bard-off, 4 is GREAT but not great for this area
so up north absolutely
stray dog, travelling merchant, former campsite with something left behind
A ghost seeking an answer for a question it had when it was alive
too fantastical
well
too supernatural
good for somewhere more magical but we are in the mundane parts of the world
Fair
what did the campsite leave behind
In order of potential interestingness:
- Marching orders
- A letter aimed at one of the people camping
- Their food, they left in a hurry.
- An opened, but half-full, bottle of liquor
- A scroll with nothing on it
ooh i like 2 and 4, what do you mean by 1?
like for a military?
can rule that out as it’s relatively peacetimey
Or IS IT? /s
How you guys handle crossbow reloading and ammunition?
the way that it’s handled
my players have ranged weapons. those ranged weapons have ammunition. i have them mark the ammunition off.
In no game that I have ever run have I made my players track ammunition, but that's just a me thing
if you can mark off spell slots you can mark off arrows
this is not something we’ve ever had a problem with
I agree it's not actually that book-keepy
I just find it more entertaining not to consider
it can be a lil tedious sure but
yeah like
there’s nothing wrong with not tracking it
i’d say tracking in-game time is more meaningful
and that itself isn’t super duper meaningful
Usually with basic ammo it's assumed you can retrieve enough that it doesn't matter. But I also have played games where each round was tracked and did not slow play down, so I'm indifferent.
Gygax rolling in his grave
;) bait
I change DQ book 4 so that the evil guy with the gemme are not discount sand worm, but the mator of the town where they have a tournament. He use the tpurnamznt to send the winners to the Shadow lord for his army of grey guard (wich are more or less grineer when you think about it)
Character idea for dnd: the hollow knight from hollow knight (not the lil guy)
I am now working on the Maze of the Beast part of the Deltora campaign
Books 5 part is pretty straight forward, mountain is prison where dwarf mine and forge weapon for the Shadow Lord (you'll never guess whonthe BBEG is...)
point is to liberated King Dwarf, lead a shortking revolution, with operation asabbotage and kill the green dragon at the en and get the emeraldf
Book 6 is fun cause it fully introduce The Ols (store brand changelings) and you ghet many ocasion of puting on in the group
plus pirates and I think that in this case the beast be a beholder that's actually the captain of the pirate.
Next up would be the Valley of the Lost and the weird old wizard dude tower
What’s Deltora?
It's a serie of fantasy children book written by Australian Writer Emily Roda. The basis of the story is that a group of 3 heroes (Lief, Barda and Jasmine) must go all over the land to find the 7 gems that would restore the magic of the Belt of Deltora to liberate their country from the influence of the Shadow Lord.
each book is fairely short and focus on one monster and getting one gem
they are verry well written and well known in France and even Japan where it got an anime
And i'm trying to do a dnd campaign that go by the book
Like compared to the original or in general?
both
series 2 had the gang travel through underwater lakes, talking with magical goblin-esque folk who used to be the original inhabitants of the main antagonist's dark realm, assembling a magic pipe to free the slaves still trapped in said dark realm.
series 3 has the gang tour the land once more to wake up the sleeping dragons and defeat the Four Sisters, a quatro of eldritch horrors who sing an evil song that slowly ruins the land
2 doesn’t really sound dark
Sounds like average DnD stuff imo
aside from all the giant bugs they have to deal with while traveling in the underground
and the bio-horror that the Shadow Lord does with his genetically-engineered monsters. ||There's a scene where the gang, already in the dark realm, come across a pile of melting bodies of the shadow lord's Gray Guard servants, who were built to have an expiry date. Two of them are conscious enough to grab at the main character and gurgle-laugh, feebly thinking that if they catch him, the shadow lord will save them. They melt just as the characters leave their clutches||
the Shadow Lord was a good antagonist. Always having backup plans and worst his conquest of Dletora is just a step in his world domination plan
also The main characteers have really good chemistery, begining by barely tolerating each other presence and becoming actuall family
for the enemy was cunning and sly
for which a thousand years was but a blink of an eye
He just seems a bit too much like only evil from what you guys have told me, great for a children’s book but outside of that idk
yay the prologue is dark too
Series 2 also had a romcom misunderstanding subplot that was funny
like it's basacly a post apo fantasy children book
||The plot with Jasmine "sister" nearly broke me but show how much of a evil bastard the Shadow lord is||
Maybe I should give them a try
I think you can find them as paper back for cheap
yea and theyre very easy to digest
and the anime is not the most faithfull
i finished the books as fast as a day, back when i was young
So like all in all better or worse than hunger games?
very much not but its fun as its own thing
||Jojo Stand King Adin||
cant compare, never read the books
Alr
weirdly enough i'd say it's for a younger audience
I really want to make a hunger games oneshot some day
||in the campaign I replaced the giant snake of The city of rat by a legal distincrt Skaven Verminlord||
Also what is grim hollow about?
also replace The giant toad of book 5 by a green dragon, i hope a level 5 party can take it
I once was in a like lvl 3-5 omeshot don’t remember which level specifically and a baby black dragon almost caused a tpk
well then i hope the dwarves i'll give them will be enough... To be faire in the actuall book they don't fight a lot (and they loose often when they do) they usually use their brains
Something I like a lot about one of my DMs is that he rewards you when you think outside the box
For example
Pumpkins that come back from the dead each round, I happen to have a shadow being as a player character part, I make it eat the pumpkins
Took them out of the fight for good
very classic dungeon crawly of them to do a lot of thinking over battling
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/deltora/images/9/93/38.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130823222456
i forgot that the anime put this pretty boy as a major threat to the heroes in the latter half of the story
yay I hope to have them do like sabotage and stuff all around the mountains and weaken the dragon some how
that's Dain ?
nah, some guy named Oacus
pyromancer
wasnt in the books
Oh that's why i don't remember the bastar
frankly I watch like 5 episodes and i cannot find them on a streaming platform here
i havent watched most of them too, used to have em on cartoon network but that has a lifetime and a half ago
now i also want to to do serie to with pseudo phyrexia as the Shadow lands
guys how do i handle the evil vampiric conspiracies of baron vlademyr olgimsky
like. how do i make it so that the players can suss out what the big bad vampire lord’s role is in everything. what kind of paper trail did he leave. how do they trace things
he’s responsible for the plague and famine in deregost, one of the imperial provinces, and he rules the province to its north
had an idea for an extremely endgame item. the philosopher’s stone.
it would allow for spell slot regeneration, using spells that were actions as bonus actions if desired, that sort of thing
basically just a fucking BORKED mage nuke
but it would have limited uses
ok
basically there are elaborate plans in play here by the villains
duchess corvarian, baron olgimsky, and lord vandrake
glorattica in the east, smišia in the central north, and somewhere between those two in the mountains of dóth respectively
aims are to destabilise and debilitate the empire in the wake of the late emperor’s passing, and then use that chaos, and the empire’s resultant weakness, to stage a hellish incursion of the lands of mortals
primary means of doing so:
- olgimsky is the reason that the plague and famine in the west is tearing that region apart
- corvarian, though not killing the emperor, will be there when he dies and will have her forces mobilise from the east fairly promptly at the slightest hint of unrest.
- unrest has been brewing in the east due to the crusade and the population there being a weird frontiersy mix, and there is talk of “the prophet king” from central/southern kazmi
so the empire is basically gonna fold in on itself and splinter
this, itself, is not necessarily a terrible thing, and the groundwork has been laid throughout the worldbuilding
there’s civil unrest all across the west, including the plague and famine, and the east is still scared of raiders even after the crusade (reasonable ish), and the emperor is about to die
but it won’t just go straight to shit
So I guess the question is, do the players need to figure this out? Or is it just going to be stuff going on in the background?
they don’t need to at all
i’m just thinking i wanna leave it so that they can figure shit out
Hey how do I have 24 passive preception with this build?
Another build that a friend is running also has proficiency in perception but they only have a passive perception of 19
If i have to guess, it must be related to the sentinel shield and the advantage it gives me to preception checks but I'm asking to make sure of it
Oh yeah
Advantage to perception checks converts to +5 to passive perception
I See (preception 24)
More people should give their dungeon bosses a love of furniture
Way cooler then just “you find a pile of gold in a chest”
Steal their paintings and Endtables
soz for super late reply lol but the interaction they have with dragonborn is cool
if you pick a dragonborn and make them reborn they get necrotic breath instead of their original
Good for Dungeon and Deltora Book 7 is stupidly easy to adapt... I still don’t know what they’ll fight in the Maze of the beast, but the core of the book was the pirat shenanigans.
Bad news for dungeaon and Deltora Book 8 is really hard to adapt caise most of it revolves around the mystery of the identity of the heir of the belt and it may depend on the pc group
Its a pseudo avengers assemble too
I mean i'll probably pull a TLOZ and make the palace it’s own dungeon woth Farrow as the boss somehow
Maybe change Farrow to be like an actual Dragon and the Dread mountain one be like a wyrm or a knucker even
(Like it want to be an actual dragon so it ammassed the riches of the dwarves or something)
I like it as a toad though
Dragons have a different narrative vibe in deltora
And Gellick is just an oversized Cane Toad that the aussie Rodda would have had some background with
It also explain the undergroung spider and shifting swarm insect
Yay I know for the gems dragpn but since i'm doing milestone xp, by book 8 the PC are level 8 and ot still dnd so when i think big scary monster i think dragon...
(Replacing the Ol in the court by a black dragon thay gleefully fucked the country)
Damit that’s super cool
Plus i'm thinking thay if A Black Dragon is scared of the Shadow Lord he must be realy something
Immagine you fight the dragon burst in the main court of the palace.Farrow say something like " You cure, you've been a thorn in my sode for too long" abd then big black cloud form above you red lightings inside. A voice booms from it cold and hateful "Farrow..." the dragon look up, fear in his eyes "Master ?" It muttered.
I found this as a joke in another server, but you know what? Farscape is probably the best D&D campaign in space that I have ever seen.
devised a prayer system for the gods of my world
basically:
- matching (or partly matching) alignments may pray to a higher power and expect a boon
- level% chance for this to occur as long as the alignments line up
- boons vary
thinking the god of natural death would grant for that day advantage on death saving throws
Seeems like a cool way to get non clerics to interact with the world’s religions
Should probably add different requirements for each god to satisfy when praying to them
of course
thank you! mechanically incentivises stuff
good incentive for me too to lock in some of the other gods, like stón and skay
or the various nature spirits worshipped by the wood elves
A rule for my games is that a god of oceans shouldn’t be worshipped in the same way as a god of the mountains
i should play a religious cleric one day
As opposed to a non-religious cleric?
Yeah thats all ive played
specifically none of the mechanics of 5e cleric require any religion
ive played a light cleric as a sun shaman, a knowledge cleric as a Vecna cultist (so i guess worship kinda? but more like wizard-but-undead-stuff), and a tempest cleric as just a dude with thunder powers
This seems bizarre to me but cool
how so?
its just another casting class and i like the spell list
same as, idk, using a barbarian's rage as a silent samurai's focus
okay lads let’s think of those gods
improved imperial idolatry:
Vivis: Life
Timos: Time
Ruminus: Tides, Sea, Skies
Gerim: Agriculture and the Land
Palados: Bravery and Victory
Polimis: Community
Termina: Travel and Freedom
Intellius: Learning and Knowledge
Craeotis: Craft and Industry
Nilis: Natural Death
Naturna: Nature
Nebula: Fate and Fortune
Ordinus: Order, Law, Civilisation
Exogarus: Chaos, Disorder, Balance
Lanina: Chaos and Accidents
Amora: Love and Beauty
Alvoris: Art and Entertainment
Solumnis: Peace and Quiet
Vivis: more potent healing perhaps?
Termina: bonus to movement?
I don’t know I think people should play a cleric when they play the class called cleric
You could easily make your own homebrew or talk with your GM to use spells from the list in other classes if you just like the spell list
but im using all the class features, spells, and stats
and i do not like homebrew
i.e. for the light cleric shaman, i wanted Warding Flare, i wanted those exact spells and proficiencies, etc etc
why do you need homebrew if nothing you use needs it
and tbh none of those refluffs seem particularly out of field
So apparently in 5.24, the distinction between magical and non magical BPS damage is confirmed gone now
Ie monsters that have BPS resistance will just have blanket BPS resistance now
And we also did not in turn get magical weapons dealing force or other types now, as some had speculated
So martials just have to always deal with resistance now
Unless you're a Monk I guess, because they just get to deal force damage with their unarmed now
dogshit design
except this. i think i sort of like this
thinking about the empire
thinking about the ancient elven city in the heart of the gostwood
that grew in step with the natural world around it
and eventually became a place of great shame due to decadence and infighting many hundreds, nay thousands, of years ago
That's been a factor of playing DnD since 3.5 but it's worse now because we got a tiny glimpse of sorta good design in 4e that Wizards has been trying to bury ever since.
Tbf that isnt entirely WotC's fault. There was a culture of hating 4e for some reason. For a while
4e is not and was not without its faults, marketing included
its my favorite edition but its launch had Issues for sure
And there is the spongey early HP math.
WotC just embraced the culture for a while
yeah with the later fixed math its really a fun time
and i genuinely like the printed adventure path
I will say that part of the hate came from the jarring switch from 3.5 to 4th. It also felt very much mote like a MMORPG with the way powers were handled/labeled. I will say that labeling enemy types and the minion rules made gming easier.
4e DMG is still one of my favorite DMGs of all time
i was thinking of what to make of the crew of the ship that will carry my players across the seas to their next objective
what about
captain no-beard,the dwarf that chides away all forms of dwarven culture by both shaving his chin clean and being a sailor,as far away as possible from underground on the high seas
dope
Does he have to wear cork armour so he doesn't sink?
Dwarfs are naturally buoyant
Touche
his hair makes him naturally magic resistant or something
it's because he hasn't washed it in a while
Well right and that’s why the water walking spell doesn’t work on him but I think in general dwarfs would be buoyant just due to shape and bmi
Depends on how dense your dwarfs are though
"why would I need to learn to swim? I got the sun kissed for that. And if I ain't got'er,something went horribly wrong hours ago"
Day and night
I toss and turn, I keep stress in my mind, mind
I look for peace, but see, I don't attain
What I need for keeps, this silly game we play, play
dungeon meshi ahh duneon meshi
more worldbuilding than a dnd question
....what would be the ramifications of a split sea that goes between two continents
about 20 meters wide
wh
no
like
i will just
use azeroth to illustrate my point
how would you bridge between THIS
God I word things horribly
its like
like if when moses split the red seas, that just became a permanent thing
iiiiinteresting
okay each side would start developing its own ecosystem more or less independently from that point
but it wouldn't change too drastically since they're connected from the other side
i’d pee in both
people would start peeing in both
to be like “ha ha, i did the thing”
Good news, there's a new trade route that's easier than ship travel!
Between those two continents,yes
But what about the rest
build a city there
how wide is the split? Because a big enough ship might be able to use bump over it
Had a world building question come up in another discussion. At what point does a setting go from apocalyptic to post apocalyptic? And when does it go from post apocalyptic to normal I guess? When the last person that remembers the old world dies? Or when the records are lost?
Like I said, about 20 meters. It goes to the bottom of the ocean
Depends on the nature of the apocalypse
The difference between apocalyptic and post apocalyptic is
Is it currently happening
Are people still in the process of dying in droves,or are they living in a destroyed wasteland
Good points, when would say a world moves past the PA phase? For context this started because my GM disagrees with the new DMG calling Dark Sun PA due to how long ago the dragons messed the world up, with new civilizations and culters forming since that time.
thats a pretty dumb point
fallout is like, the default post apocalyptic setting in the minds of the people and we have the NCR,shady sands, diamond city. hell, even the legion is about as advanced as the DS societies irc
I'm no sailor but I think anything bigger than a schooner could just bridge that gap. The water on the sides is still fluid, right? As long as the prow doesn't tip too far down before it cuts into the other side then it'll stay afloat
My favorite post-apocalyptic setting is Creation from Exalted
Post apocalyptic is definitely a spectrum. If people are hanging onto the past, wearing scraps and fighting over ruins, that's more PA, and if they're making new stuff and growing their culture it's less so
honestly i do like the idea of there being
ships made specifically to bridge the gap
that seems fun
Funnily enough, if you want to see a fantastical society in a post-apocalyptic setting I'd recommend Adventure Time
It does show how the world can change, sometimes unrecognizably, but life persists in new forms.
Old Fallout games are also better at showing off the idea that society will begin anew and will often run into very similar issues. That series gave people less than a century before they went back to building new settlements, and about two centuries to recreate a state.
Things moved on, and pretty quickly. People don't generally want to live in filth, peril and squalor forever, and will try to improve their quality of life however they can manage it
Now, the distinction sometimes goes from post-apocalyptic and post-post-apocalyptic, but that's semantics. Anytime after the apocalypse can be described as such, but at a certain point it can cease to be defined by the apocalypse and more just a new era with new people and new struggles
When things get better
I have heard that before, probably should watch it at some point.
It's got a lot of that early 2010s kinda humor and affect. I find it charming but others may not
arrrr, the jumpers they call ‘em
At only 60 meters across that sea, I'm imaging things like the barges on the Mississippi. Or small ferries
We have uhh, a LARP that's post-post-apoc in a way
and we've come up with our own definition
Apocalyptic: The world is actively going to shit, civilization is crumbling, all semblance of order is lost.
Post-Apocalyptic: The world is starting to rebuild, civilization is beginning to order itself, but it's still rocky
Post-Post-Apoc: The rebuilding has gone on long enough that it's no longer REbuilding, but something brand new coming from the ashes.
Basically every dnd setting is post-post-apocalyptic. Like whole civilizations have collapsed so many times in order to have all these dungeons that there’s some sort of great filter theory going on.
yeah working out my lore it becomes obvious that the cadians and the glorians and the malmoans and so on and so on left a lot in their wake
One of the most common ones I have seen in most editions is the Giant Empires that collapsed during a war with the dragons .
Silly Recursive Illithids
I think two good points for where a setting is no longer post-apocalyptic is when 1) the average person's concerns are no longer immediate death by violence or scarecity
Or 2) society's culture is no longer strictly looking back at what was lost and instead looking to define their own great monuments, ideals, and stories
One series I just remembered was the Shinaria series. That setting would normally be considered post apocalyptic by us, with the series taking place in the ruins of our world, but to the characters that isnjust the world now. Planet of the apes works in a simular way I belive.
Yeah the Planet of the Apes films (with the exception of the original Rise trilogy) is only post-apocalyptic from the point of view of the humans. To the apes, it’s just life.
i think that the dark sun setting is
always post apocalyptic since it is more or less defined by it's incredible lack of resources
immediate survival will never stop being the main goal of their societies
Yeah it’s a pretty straightforward analogy of industrialism and poisoning the world so it’s going to be a shithole until people stop killing all the plant life just to move up the ladder.
I require advice
Playing in a gestalt game, I'm trying to decide what I wanna play as
It's down to either a Warlock/Paladin, Warlock/Sorcerer, Artificer/Fighter, or Artificer/Wizard
What say ye lot
Character concept is a living suit of armor spellsword, setting is a great big dead jungle that people are exploring to try and figure out what in the fuck happened
Artificer Fighter
It would be the most traditional martial of the lot
Aint it fun
steel wind stirke not being available to eldritch knight
is a tragedy
Idle question for everyone who cares to answer: Which pronunciation for "tabaxi" do you use, ta-BAX-ee or tah-BAHSH-ee?
A fox finds that the latter pronunciation just seems to flow better.
I'll be a contrarian and throw in ta-box-si
Ranger is a good option if you’re going to be exploring the jungle
Artificer/ rougue make yourself a magical gun and learn the true meaning of sneak attack at range
Could flavor it as a finger gun built into yourself
Lmao that'd be funny
Turn your head into a gun
got d&d tomorrow
Weirdest question
Anyone got a good picture for a time-sword
my friend has made the foolish mistake of running the game
i will be playing a minotaur fighter (eldritch knight) for this one shot
do i find familiar or do i charm person (i am starting in jail)
depends
can you have pre-cast find familiar
if not,charm person
charm person is what i’ll take
idk if i’m gonna be able to get the incense
witch bolt, shield, charm person, thinking fire bolt and toll the dead
this guy might be fucking unkillable
thinking of taking tough
40 HP at level 3 doesn’t hurt
two bound weapons i can summon at will while in prison
a good number of spells
a minotaur with horns
This cracter's whole shtick is rewinding time a few seconds, and he's got this sword-bat thing attached to it, if that helps any
I am aware of ekko
I love his aesthetic, but the giant popsicle doesn't mesh well with the "sword made by the primordial god of time that absorbs the lifespan of the people it kills" thing I have in mind
Fair, I just heard Time Sword
SOUL CALIBER!!
alright
i think my ranger revision should be done
i got inspired by BG3's ranger then added a bit more roleplay sided functionality and moved some underwhelming features around
everything that isn't specified in the google doc stays the same
the last optional feature is what is unfinished but since i'm stuck, i want to make sure at least that everything else is fine
anyone who wants to help, feel free to leave comments on the doc or just reply to this

Make a locathah rogue, call that shit the bass witouth a trace
maybe
bonus if you give them a french accent
It keeps being equally funny and frustrating to me how much people online argue about the new Hide rules
They are really stupid, but people just keep reading stuff into it that's not there
what’s the new ruling
So basically the way it works now
When you take the Hide action, which you still need to be behind cover or heavily obscured to do, you make a DC 15 Stealth check
On a success, you become Invisible
Until you attack, cast a spell, deal damage, or get found by someone by making a Perception check against your Hide result
okay tbh
that sounds like decent enough design
like i don’t hate this. not in love
but it’s good enough to work in 5e
that is
odd
why so hard?
no need to gate it behind that high a DV then make it so that the enemies have to roll over it
would be simpler to just make it dynamic
the original ruling was fine of like
beat enemy passive perception
or arbitrary DM-chosen DC that’s appropriate
wait like magically invisible until spotted?
Not literally invisible, but they don't know where you are so it's the same as being invisible
basically the invisible condition
the spell and the Hide action have the exact same wording actually
both just say "you gain the Invisible condition"
but this does in effect mean you can now Hide behind cover, become Invisible, and then when someone walks around the cover you continue being hidden because you're Invisible so they can't see you
you can even move around like this too
until someone makes an active check to find you, or you break it yourself, you continue being Invisible
i prefer it tbh i didnt like trying to work around original hiding stuff
just Invis and go, ez pz
eh
too skyrim
i already think stealth, the way it tends to be used, is shit
i am personally halfway tempted to stop letting players roll stealth themselves and doing it behind the screen,
or in their own rolls telling them “sure you attempt to hide”
because you don’t know if you’re being hidden
gonna take a crack at building some terrain shortly i think
That’s how I do insight checks
yeah same
sorta
the second part
like unless you absolutely nail the numbers and then i’m like “yeah he’s fucking lying”
Well if a NPC is lying and insight is rolled but the DC is not met then I would just tell the player “You don’t think they are lying.”
They have no idea if they rolled over or under the DC but if the character is fairly smart then I guess they would assume they are right.
“come, friends, let us dine tonight on a great feast to celebrate your victory”
“seems sus. insight check. 12”
“seems legit”
I would rather roll the insight check for them and ask their mods unless it’s an opposed check where I hide the NPCs score
I will always support players rolling, i want to minimize the amount of times i roll as dm
REAL
Okay so I have this mega dungeon I’ve talked about before. It’s 4 castles stacked on top of each other in a swamp and I’ve ran into a problem. How could I make flooded areas on the third castle but keep the fourth castle relatively dry?
water elementals on strike
magic mirror tied to a water source malfunctioning, or frog folk moved in with it
I don’t follow on how any of these stop water from leaking/flooding down into the 4th castle
Magic water, so it doesnt need to follow the rules
You could have the flooded areas slightly lower than the entrances/exits between floors?
so it forms a sort of lake
funniest idea
water flowing upwards into the land
some kind of magical effect that’s maybe not a big deal in the grand scheme of the megadungeon’s ecology but has drastic effects for the terrestrial ecology
yeah dungeons are a fun place to mess around with that sort of stuff
old castle had a small portal to the elemental plane of water for the lord's convinience? well oops its been abandoned for a few decades and that shit needs a plumber
Hey I need some ideas
My players are hopefully on the next session gonna find a invitation
That invitation is for a magical restaurant that constantly changes location, and also the only way to find it
How should it lead then there
the invitation folds itself into an elegant origami bird/animal to lead them
that could be cool thanks
i’m thinking i may play some solo D&D tonight after i go do my grocery shopping
I finally got a slot in the module I've been wanting to play 😌
Oh?
It gives solid advice on handling inter-player conflicts
and isn't just "here's mechanics"
Lots of stuff about respecting players and social contracts
Fair
It's the kind of stuff a DM really needs to learn rather than just being a mechanical guide, which is important
i think the DMG should basically be two halves
- running the game
- running the game
Yeah, the entire first chapter is "How to interact with other human beings in a respectful manner while playing D&D"
shame that has to be written tbh
I mean honestly
i think if i end up making a DMG at all for journeyman, that’ll all be covered in the introduction as succinctly as possible
my autistic ass would have appreciated that chapter when I was first learning
i am not the prospective players’ father, nor really any authority or responsibility in their life. they and their friends are to establish the same boundaries and respect that they would extend to each other normally, and the same should go for players who are otherwise not so close
but i also doubt journeyman will need a GM guide
Should be in the PHB tbh
It should
What helps is that a lot of people know how to Identify problems at a table but not how to Talk about them, so this is really nice
Man,that just
Makes me want to play a evil character again
I never got the opportunity to
one of my favorite characters was evil
I really wanted to do the "monster who hunts monsters" angle and have a spicy relationship with other party members
one of my characters was evil
oh mine was just an evil shitbag
chaotic evil really
hated gnomes
dwarf with gnome beef
I don't even want to go that far
Just
"leader of a crime syndicate"
Not any plans for world domination
Just make money being evil
yeah mine was just a cultist who found themselves stuck with the party to kill a vampire
raised the fun question of "can a cultist of vecna and an agent of the raven queen work together"
which was fun because the moment the vampire was dead, the dm let us pvp
Also,I want some opinions on a DND character Idea I had
Barbarian
Noble background
Haughty, prim and proper 90% of the time
Psychotic Murder blender during rage
Like, she fights with a little rapier normally
but then the giggling starts
and gets progressively worse
until the rapier dissapears, two axes come out and you have a crazed maniac running at you in a dress worth more than your house covered in blood screaming some borderlands psycho tier lines
Could they?
they did indeed work together from levels 2 to 10
very tentatively
then after we killed the vampire we faced off and my cleric was left for dead </3
Damn
that goes kinda hard tho
sounds about right
I've seen a few parties turn on each other once it comes time to divy up the loot or the big bad is dead
it was neat because we had asked permission to do it at character creation, and finally getting to pull it off felt so sweet
oh yeah this is the shit
realising that the party of seven, four of whom work towards different goals but all of whom allied to fight the dragon
are now victorious
and it’s only a matter of time before someone makes the first strike
could be right now as we rummage through the coins
could be while we sleep on our way back through Rannock Stead
could be they slip out with the artefact this very moment
I just think the idea of the pretty lady that acts as the party face and is too delicate to carry her own stuff so she bosses a servant around to do it
Suddenly turning around on a bandit leader and SHOW ME ALL THE PRETTY SHADES OF RED YOUR INSIDES HAVE has some pretty good potential
Or will it become boring after a few sessions
it's gas
First session of my Dragonlords game is today
very hype
My party is:
-Water Genasi Divination Wizard, Demigod, son of Pythor, the God of Battle. Pythor's ex-wife and adopted sister killed his mother in jealousy.
-Thylean Medusa Druid, Circle of Stars, Cursed one path, cursed to be a Medusa and hunted by her once lover, who is unaware of who she is.
-Goliath Barbarian/Bard, a warrior-philosopher with the visage of a moving marble statue, alabaster skin and well-maintained physique.
-Thylean Minotaur Barbarian/Monk, cursed to be a minotaur by Sydon rather than being born as one, he seeks to end the curse and prove his worth.
let's gooo
You know. At first I thought the steady aim feature of the new rouge was kind of not great, until I built one with sharp shooter and a long bow...that is just a mean combo. Especially once you get the ability to knock someone prone with a sneak attack die.
Hey anyone know a good way to upgrade item magical items
Like,I want to have my players invest in upgrading their weapons rather than
Replacing then
solo d&d update: things looked pretty fuckin bad there for a second, but we prevailed. at level one, i slew like. four spiders in one turn due to a mix of Cleave and Great Weapon Master and a crit
shit was crazy
so marx was able to protect his hunting buddy (useless), peyton, and his newfound ally in distress (less useless on paper but still got hit real bad from the spiders), linhart
we are currently taking a diversion from our hunting trip to seek out hilde, linhart’s lady friend who was taken during the night
by a phase spider ooooooooo
Let them go on a quest to get the the items re-enchanted
we also found 50 gp and a potion of mage armour among the bodies in this spider den
are you familiar with the Fizban's Treasury of Dragon magic items?
Kinda
The slumbering dragon items are a nice weird way to do upgrades on a magic item without making a whole new ruleset imo
