#

Four?

bleak hazel
#

your traditional regular MA is 9 charms long, occasionally 10 with an E4 capstone

Crane is the only one I know by heart and has 5 mastery 4 terrestrial, so yeah, call it four of each, spread out

#

Throne Shadow, to pick a newer one, is 4 mastery 4 terrestrial

fierce star
#

ah, I overestimated how many charms, that's fair. Well it means fewer filler; I only have 5 out right now, to an E2 form. So I can probably do three coming off of that leading into an E3 capstone easy. Regardless, if 9 charms has 4/4... two of these should have a mastery and two of htese should hav ea terrestrial, roughly.

Even Blade has one terrestrial, one mastery in the generics

marsh garden
#

that's fair

fierce star
#

i"m baiscally looking for two charms to put a Terrestrial effect on, and two to put a Mastery effect on, and this one popped at me as an easy thing to Terrestrial (not let artifact ranged be artifact melee), but the consensus seems to be that's too much of a nerf?

buoyant summit
marsh garden
#

Terrestrial is for "this shouldn't be available at the terrestrial level"

buoyant summit

Hrm

marsh garden

and "artifact traits contingent on an existing artifact at a 1-2m discount" seems pretty reasonable

buoyant summit
#

Greatsword & sword & dagger

fierce star
#

Well, my other charm effects are 'reflexive reload a ranged style weapon or ready one when you make a melee attack with a style weapon or unarmed', the above as needs must, 'ignore mobility penalty of armor for a movement action and gain that many bonus dice, non-charm if it's a rush' (terrestrial: these dice are not non-charm for rushes?), a withering attack supplemental that lets you attack another target in close range of the first (only gaining initaitive from teh highest damage dealt), and then the form charm which is a pretty generic 'list of buffs' form charm--negate mobiltiy penalties to evasion, reflexively ready style weapons 1/turn, flurry melee attacks adn defend other with no penalty, flurry ranged attacks and take cover with no penalty

This is fucked up and probably doesn't work

It's not suitable as an intro charm given how the form works, but

#

And of course

#

Form charm gives you the dual wield clash bonus for sword & dagger

#

'Suddenly my parry is 9.'

#

'The fuck?!'

marsh garden
#

as a charm that's effectively just +2 non-Charm Defense, which you'll have to price rather high

#

but it's definitely doable

buoyant summit
#

I mean it

#

wouldn't be non-Charm, no?

#

It would be the result of a Charm

marsh garden
#

it would if it applies your clash bonus

buoyant summit
#

Shite

marsh garden
#

since that's a non-Charm source of defense

#

+1 non-Charm Eva/Parry exists already though

#

with upside

#

(usually they're like 4m for +1 and upside, so pretty damn expensive, but still good)

#

so you'll want to figure out what bonuses, maluses, restrictions, or prices to give it for +2

buoyant summit

mhm mhm

Probably has the Terrestrial of 'not while Crashed lmao, eat shit'

tulip folio

I think you can price 'gets the existing dual wield clash bonus' a fair bit cheaper than non-charm bonuses there

To know another's name is to be among friends. To know no names is to be alone even in a crowd.

The Wanderer strips knowledge of names from a character in medium range, rolling (Appearance + [Linguistics or Socialize]) against his Resolve.

An affected character finds that he cannot remember proper names and cannot identify people. The difficulty to remember a specific proper name becomes (3 + Wanderer's Essence) and characters without inhuman or supernatural senses cannot identify specific characters, no matter how distinctive they are. Characters with supernatural senses attempting to identify a character (Perception + Linguistics) to bring the name of a character to mind and identify them but otherwise all characters are shapeless strangers to them. A nontrivial character may spend 1 willpower to ignore this effect for a single action. Once a character has spent (Wanderer's Essence) willpower this way, the effect ends.

In combat, an affected character does not lose track of the position of his foes, allowing him to continue fighting them unless they achieve stealth or otherwise break visibility.

Keys:

Curse of Babel(Essence 3): An affected character cannot understand or speak any language.

Chaos in the Ranks(Essence 3): An affected battlegroup cannot benefit from Rally or Order actions. Its attacks affect all characters, not just foes and including itself.

There are none who doubt the power of a promise, with the world itself twisting to punish oathbreakers. Forging a pact with a fundamental concept, storms and blades alike shy away at doing harm.

The Wanderer forms a contract with a concept as broad as a speciality, such as 'Fire', or 'Bladed Weapons', representing the force that will attempt to not harm her. She gains the following effects when she would suffer harm from an effect covered by contracted concept:

  -Against Withering Attacks, she reduces the initiative she loses by 2. This does not change the amount the attacker gains.
  -Effects that would deal Lethal Damage or Aggravated damage downgrade the damage type one level (Aggravated to Lethal, Lethal to Bashing)
  -Once per session, the Wanderer may introduce a stroke of good luck, making a dramatic edit to reduce the danger she is in from environmental harm. A fire may fail to spread to the house she is in, or a key be found for a door just before the flames reach her.

This charm lasts until another pact is made. The Wanderer may never pact with Iron and objects of Iron do not downgrade their damage type.

Onnyeong the Avalanche teaches that the blade is a hideous thing, and its unsheathing is the last resort of sword-arts. Once an infamous assassin who glorified her teacher Azure Crane, the Earth Aspect only teaches those who already understand the cost of killing —repentant criminals, survivors of violence, former soldiers, and the like. She is a brutal teacher, not cruel but without mercy in her training, which teaches students to fight defensively, withstand punishment, and win fights without drawing their blades in the first place. Her school is deeply antagonistic to Winter Songbird, defined by its starkly practical and anti-romantic philosophy.

spiral cosmos
#

my first thoughts are that Twinfang Defense probably wants another effect instead of just +1 parry, because while that's effective it's kind of very inert, it's not doing much tactically. a way to integrate it more directly into the clashing theme (ik it has the dagger clause) or whatever other part of the gameplay loop is there would be good

Satisfaction-Demanding Technique is probably mathematically worth the cost while in the Form and dual wielding but outside of it i'm not sure it really is worth it - keying the effect off of the clash bonus is probably worse than just giving a mathematical floor. i think you want another way to get at the idea, like making it work into the Form or taking a note out of Laughing Monster style's Deeper-Into-Trouble Technique (or perhaps Weeping Maiden Strike in CLoH?. this is probably the thing that's going to be hardest to handle from a design perspective, because it makes you better at hitting people who hit your friends (which is good), but it needs to either be good at that, or serve as a reason to make people hit you.

i think the Form giving a clash bonus is good, but as a mechanic clash bonus is kind of niche. the Form wants to be feeding other powers, like ways to generate clashes - you have that already in the not-losing-Initiative clause, but it's worth thinking about what other ways you have to generate clashes at the e1 suite, like something to boost your Initiative, defend other into a clash (!?), yadda yadda

#

this is kind of hard to do in an e1 suite, because all the clash-generation tech is normally Celestial native suite-e1 only and willpower gated in some capacity. so you gotta really use all your tools to make forcing clashes part of (though it can't be all of) a viable gameplay loop at e1

#

that's a lot of feedback but with that said i think this is fun and i like the yelling beast and fangs imagery, feels like something a Lunar made

#

maybe there's some fun synergies you can find in the Lunar set

hope that's helpful @buoyant summit

#

Homebrew balancing question

#

are full defenses and aim actions

#

roughly equivalent in terms of value when tacked onto charms?

bleak hazel
#

FD is rather stronger, since Aim at base is +3 NCD on one attack, full defence is +2 noncharm parry (so the equivalent of 4 dice) on every attack against you for the rest of the round

buoyant summit
#

Mhm, mhm

bleak hazel
#

FD also triggers stuff like Crane Form and Prismatic Bulwark's various riders that are inherently quite strong because FD is not available reflexively like Aim is

#

whereas something like Sid Melee has reflexive aim tech and then a bunch of while-aiming riders without going overboard

buoyant summit
#

Okay, would the value be the same if it gave you the noncharm parry against the single next attack to target you?

#

I'm trying to puzzle out how to fit a piece a defensive tech into the MA I'm making based around 'no, you attack me'

bleak hazel
#

what, without actually being a Full Defence and thus triggering Crane instinct mode? it would be slightly more valuable in pure stat terms, since 2 def is 4 motes and 3 attack dice is 3 motes (ignoring the fact that they're both non-charm)

#

but reasonably close

buoyant summit
#

Yes, without it being a Full Defense

#

Not that this MA is compatible with Crane

#

Actually, would that change the calculus? This MA isn't compatible at all with Crane afaik

bleak hazel
#

it would change it a bit but not by much, since a round-long FD is just worth a lot more than an Aim and you can finagle pseudo-compatibility in a few ways with FDs because the things that trigger off them don't care what you used to do the full defence, just whether you are full defending at the time

buoyant summit
#

tru tru

bleak hazel
#

of course it depends on the cost of this effect, what exactly it does and how many prereqs it has, but if it's a cheap+cheerful early charm I would stick with flurrying FD, not making it reflexive in some way

She rolls (Wits + Martial Arts) against an enemy’s roll with a free full Excellency, or against a difficulty of the Storyteller’s choosing, usually difficulty 5. If the stylist has any negative or nihilistic Intimacies towards herself, she adds (Intimacy) non-Charm successes also.

This Charm can also be used to cure characters of the above effects with a touch. Doing so can be crueler, however: their life flashes before their eyes as it truly was, not how they remember it being. Subject to this intolerable recollection, they must immediately roll (Willpower) dice and lose temporary Willpower equal to their successes. If this drains them of Willpower, they become incapacitated.```

Language and metaphors in the most ancient surviving treatises on the style suggest it holds its origin in the warriors of the Lunar host, the nameless masters’ boasting of their victories over great raksha in single combat interspersed between descriptions of techniques and more practical thoughts on the style’s applications.

Treatises housed in the dojos and dueling academies of Realm satrapies and Shogunate Successors, Immaculate monasteries, and even many of the libraries of the great Yu-Shan lack these characteristics, suggesting an effort to dull the style’s association with the Anathema.``` I have finished Regal Fang's flavor text

Unlimited Steam Works
Cost: 25m, 1wp. Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 4.
Type: Simple
Keywords: Perilous, Mastery, Terrestrial, Decisive, Aggravated.
Duration: Instant

The Martial Artist makes a Decisive attack against every enemy out to Short range, splitting his initiative as evenly as possible among the targets. This attack always deals Lethal damage. Against Enemies of Fate and Creatures of Darkness, it instead deals Aggravated. If this is performed in a Blight Zone, Shadowland, or Wyld Zone, the environmental effects of the area are ignored by everyone for the rest of the scene.

Terrestrial: This attack only reaches out to Close range.
Mastery: This charm permanently renders a blight zone, shadowland, or wyld zone normal instead of only for the rest of the scene.

#

Alch JB booster seems broadly worse than Joy In Violence Approach, since it's reroll 1s and a tiny bit of init gain for 3m, but you can submodule it to reroll 2s and do other stuff, so... no idea, alchs are weird

#

Sids don't have any join battle boosters, Lunars just get double 9s and a stat-swap for 3m so you're in-line there except for the WP part

#

I think you're good at 4m

bleak hazel
#

I'm inclined to put this down as "deebs can have nice things as a treat"

buoyant summit

Very fair

#

The other charm this apes from is the opening of Fire Dragon as well

#

Wait no

#

It used to do that

#

then I changed it to double 9s, not rolling twice

#

bleak hazel
#

the opening JB charm on fire dragon is quite sad, so that's probably a good idea

tulip folio
wise ocean
#

well, everything in GJ is really quite bad and then becomes good when it's against doomoids, which I think where-is-doom falls into

#

otherwise: sfs

#

sfs is the gold standard jb booster

tulip folio
#

buoyant summit
#

Is Clash as a mechanic too good to base a martial art around?

#

Cuz so far all of this style's so far 4 charms is 'yo lmao Clashing is awesome'

tulip folio
#

I don't think it's too good but martial arts are rarely about a Single Thing.

#

Like even Crane, the Counterattack Style doesn't have all it's charms be 'Oh yeah, I love counterattacking'

buoyant summit
#

hhhhhfuck...

#

well the theme is dramatic dueling and defending others (not the action itself necessarily) so I likely need to look at ways to expand it via the latter theme

bleak hazel
#

Crane has four counterattacking charms, counting the form, and a damage booster that goes well with them

#

Crossed Wings Denial, Crane Form, Mournful Crane's Cry, Wisdom of the Celestial Crane

#

oh wait, five, Feather-Stirred Arrow Deflection is only applicable to counterattacks

#

so half clashes and clash accessories and half other stuff seems to be vaguely in line

buoyant summit
#

are any of the pre-form Crane charms not counterattacks or counterattack accessories?

bleak hazel
#

one of them is a withering damage booster and one of them is a Defend Other charm, there's no counterattacking stuff before the Form at E2

buoyant summit
#

Gotcha

#

Is there literally any world in which Honorless Knave Chiding (that defend-other-esque clash we discussed in the fancord) is a pre-form charm or is that like

#

mandatorily a post-form, E2 charm

#

Honestly nevermind, either way it's healthier as an E2 charm

#

Should I just make a pre-form defend other charm...

bleak hazel
#

Reflexive clashes are functionally always E2+ charms because of how strong getting to declare your clash after the enemy attack charms is

buoyant summit
#

truuuuuueeeeee...

bleak hazel
#

usually E3 if they're full damage decisive clashes

buoyant summit
#

I will admit one of the reasons I'm hesitant to make a defend other charm is then it gets comparisons to Crane

#

More than it has already received by you, top, Iki, and some people on the fancord

#

Which make me worry it feels redundant?

#

idk it's probably nothing to lose sleep over

bleak hazel
#

The other counter-heavy style is Laughing Monster, the specific emphasis of which is something I can't remember off the top of my head, so you may want to look there also

#

Does a bunch of things at once

buoyant summit
#

oh yeahhhh

#

I stole the scaffolding of Satisfaction-Demanding Technique from it

tulip folio
#

Laughing Monster's got really common counters but they're very small ones.

#

The form lets you counter if someone misses you

#

But the counter only deals damage based on how much init they lost missing you.

I think it depends on how much you've gotta spend on your Join Battle rolls to begin with

#

buoyant summit
#

The stylist gains 1 Initiative if she makes a Clash attack after delaying her turn.

When wielding a knife or sai in her offhand, the stylist calculates her sword’s accuracy as though it were a Light weapon of the same quality.

If the stylist took the Defend Other action on her previous turn, she may pay 3 motes to reflexively do so again, with a Defense of (Presence/2), increased by 1 if she is wielding a knife or sai in her offhand.
```Is this too good as a Form charm?
Regal Fang is about the central contradiction inherent in the fact that we tell stories to ourselves about certain weapons having a noble character while they get just as coated in the blood and guts and shit of the battlefield, like how the stag's antlers are a noble crown, despite existing to wound and lock with another buck's over the right to procreate
World-Devouring Warlord Form
Cost: 8m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 1
Type: Simple
Keywords: Form
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Antagonist-Naming Technique, Sword-Stunting Methodology
The Stylist takes on the imperious, forceful mien of the Sword, the supremacy of force over all other tools. Armies of Gossamer illusion form about her, preludes to the inevitable victory of the Sword.
The stylist gains the following benefits:
-She adds (Appearance) bonus dice on attack rolls of Counterattacks, Clashes and Slaughter
-Foes treat the area out to Close range of her as moving through a Battle Group (Difficult Terrain and costing 1 initiative to move through).
-The supremacy of the Sword denies Battle Groups any benefit from Might against her.
-When an enemy battle group suffers Dissolution, the stylist may reflexively make an attack to Slaughter, as her phantasmal armies become all too real to the fleeing survivors.
Special activation rules: When the Wanderer wins Join Battle or a Strategic Warfare roll, she may reflexively assume World-Devouring Warlord Form.
This was one of my first charms desigend for it but I'm not 100% sure.
wouldn't have fixed the deeper issues with that expac's writing but i think he'd have annoyed people less
bleak hazel
#
I need to stat up a couple of different Corpse-Engines since Crimson is walking around with 1d3+1 of those things at any given time and if I tell a PC raid to fight two thousand corpse goliaths at once they are legally allowed to mail me a pipe bomb
wise ocean
#
probably
as done currently, it produces this awkward effect where if you're playing tank he just straight-up can't touch you And Then You Autolose, which feels bad
marsh garden
#
i don't play ff14 but that does sound peak
wise ocean
#
default corpse engine is a Thanatar
#
this means you need domitar, vorax, and arlatax
bleak hazel
#
I was mostly cribbing various Nid big beasts but that also works
#
Arlatax it is
#
arlatax and his ursarax ducklings
velvet raft
bleak hazel
#
oh yeah, absolutely
#
only pro necromancers allowed, get these script kiddie constructs out of here
next niche
#
... okay Misc finally dragged me in here hi fellow exalt nerds
marsh garden
#
gret
next niche
#
someone was doing some abyssal stuff I heard-
velvet raft
#
I’ve been contemplating chain and armor mortification
bleak hazel
#
Vix has also homebrewed about half of Abyssal Melee 2 so I figured I would throw her at the various abyssalizing discussions
marsh garden
#
oh sick
velvet raft
#
The funny thing about Abyssal Brawl is that it really doesn’t have that much grapple tech
next niche
marsh garden
#
it just has like four charms that scrungle you
velvet raft
#
It’s got a really good attack charm for grapplers, and the legendary size charm, the one where you throw people really far, and … I can’t remember any others
#
In fairness you don’t need grapple-specific charms for savaging
next niche
#
but yes lol
a mutual friend of ours introduced me like... 2 years ago and it was like introducing an invasive species somewhere i had no defenses
sooo now ive been working on an abyssal melee rewrite
and uhh hi
next niche
#
oh mine?
marsh garden
#
yeah
next niche
#
Thank you!
velvet raft
#
Ye it’s good for savaging
next niche
#
i do also draw this is tru
wise ocean
#
welcome to the gang vix
I don't know if Misc has actually lancerfied you yet but if not we'll have to get on that
marsh garden
bleak hazel
#
I have not, Vix has resistance to mechs
next niche
#
i was mostly dragged here for Exalted chat I confess, I am the world's only trans woman who's kinda eh on mecha
marsh garden
#
lmao
velvet raft
#
Honestly this is funky but given grapple melee weapons exist maybe I should just brew up some custom melee charms for that
bleak hazel
#
just skip the accuracy booster because Excellent Spook is already a crazy boost to decisives/gambits there
marsh garden
#
honestly? you could just do the schwifty thing infernal war did
#
stealing lunars' gimmick
#
and just make it like
velvet raft
#
I know I don’t need Chains to have a corresponding statblock to write about her but it fills me with joy
marsh garden
#
brawl or resistance, with chain-and-armor Charms as the alt prereqs
next niche
marsh garden
#
Contemptuous Warstrider Disassembly...
next niche
#
see that's so much better
#
thank you
velvet raft
#
Also I kinda like her having melee + martial arts just aesthetically
marsh garden
#
yeah that's fair
#
which arts has chains got?
velvet raft
#
Since she is A Warrior
#
Mainly Bear
marsh garden
#
makes sense
#
scrunch
velvet raft
#
She would also like Mantis
#
But
#
That’s a lot
marsh garden
#
i wanted to eventually do MAs on Hope, but i looked at his xp budget and shat myself
#
brawl it is
#
not exactly a trial for me, though, considering it has the charm named Life-Annihilating Castigation, and it does exactly what it says it does
velvet raft
#
… would a melee charm that specifically allows itself to be combined with MA charms when doing a grapple attack be too much, I wonder
#
Probably
wise ocean
#
this castigation really do be annihilating life
marsh garden
#
i like Buster Wolf
#
what can i say
marsh garden
marsh garden
#
i do wish abyssals had more versatile Charms
next niche
#
versatile charms for non-siddies are in the realm of ancillary thematic thing that you can't really get in MAs otherwise.
marsh garden
#
but blanket permission to drop the whole kit is terrifying
next niche
#
or that don't really combo with MA stuff
coral wraith
#
Oh hey Vix!!
#
Good to see you there
next niche
#
Hello!
#
Misc dragged me in here finally.
coral wraith
#
It was inevitable!
velvet raft
#
It was foretold
wise ocean
Gang Collection Method
coral wraith
#
Best Friend's Server Method
velvet raft
#
It’s okay I don’t care about Lancer anymore either
next niche
#
with mentions of someone else doing abyssal melee rework as the straw that broke the camel's back lmao
velvet raft
#
I played a campaign! I had a reasonably good time!
marsh garden
#
lmao
#
Lancer was fun its just kind of a dead game
marsh garden
#
i haven't really looked for a lancer campaign recently, but i would enjoy playing more screatures
coral wraith
#
I feel like dead game is such a strange way to descrbe a tabletop game
next niche
#
fuck i really need to finish that wyld behemoth sketch
marsh garden
#
behemoths...
