but misc did just ask about the funniest options!
but the eight hour shift zombie ritual has variants that can add 2-4 dots of innate merits and there are some silly but unrealistic combos there
Direction Sense + Eidetic Memory, my smartphone zombie
quadratic zombie factory
oh, you can get your big dark souls guys, you can just about squeeze in Giant
good for work
wall walking, gills and wings all present slightly interesting ideas about how Skullstone works
you get all the cool zombie variants from China Mieville's The Crawl
How to win at being undead:
Burrower Zombies are only 2 dots of merit...
Winged Zombies
burrower with claws for Mole Rat Zombies
I admit a certain liking for the idea that the underworld has a slightly better handle on systematic, industrial magic than Creation does at that point, because ghostly tendencies towards strange fixations tend to really engrave stuff like that on their societies
and also because there are a lot of First Age dead who remember industrial-scale magic
Enhanced Sense (Vision) + Thermal Vision would be very funny just for 'what do you mean your zombie has 4 dice of senses and two automatic successes when detecting warm blooded people?
it's not totally generalisable because of all the different afterlives, but "sorcery gets you bespoke demon servants/slaves, necromancy gets you Saruman-style pocket economies and armies" is kind of cute as a comparison
Hunting zombie….
except ideally more competent than saruman because his sucked
Can third circle demons learn third circle sorcerery?
Or can literally only solars and Infernals do that
Who knows? We don't have any that can do it but it's entirely possible if its within their themes?
Because I was reminded that “oh right deathlords can do Necromancy 3”
four of the nine deathlords can do Void in 3e
(i wish it was all nine
, i don't love that necromancy isn't A Big Thing for all of them)
I could see a Qaf third circle having that potential, with the 'enlightnment' theme and him having a full sorcerous initiation themed on him.
...actually, we have a demon named who likely can.
this guy probably is a solar-circle caster
if not he's definitely a sapphire circle caster with like
a "can fake adamant circle somehow" trick
I would rather the variance tbh
I like that Lion is just a guy who walks up and swords you to death
i like that they just sword you to death!
I also feel like even being a second circle necromancer is still 'A Big Thing'.
That's on par with the Best Lunar Necromancer
rereading The Crawl has made me want to do a plot about a "regular" Creation necromantic ancestor cult opposing a bunch of insane spectres and nephwracks making new and especially awful kinds of zombie
And Lunars are very noted necromancers
Also it lets you have a plot point of them having a majordomo Abyssal necromancer
Who is immenintely more killable
but i think there's something lost
even if there's also something gained
i do also hope that the "fused with a neverborn third-circle" thing is at least loosely canon, because that's neat
I do think it’s fun that Lunars are #2 necromancers in lore
I forget if we get to see any lunar coded Necromatic initations
we do not
the Skull Diary is pretty agnostic
and you could easily have a bunch of lunars with it
the terrestrial/ivory circle is sometimes a bit underrated because exalts can either do that or better, but you can very much be a big shot caster at either of those two
but none that are super specifically lunar-coded
Umaza's Hymns looks cool on lunars, though
makes me want to play a lunar necro
Lunars do also have imo the single best magic merit in the entire game.
It's hard to argue with The Big Book of Spells
big book very good
deathly siren allure is neat
Giving Lunars the Offical “most likely to be 2-2 and thriving” award
interested to see how Green Lady and B.I.S are doing with the necromancy this time around
god i love black ice shadow's dumbass crow spell
it's so funny
and it looks real good
I know I stole the Big Book of Spells for a necromantic initiation. XD
Remembrancer (Merit ••••): The Necromancer draws on fragments of the past, calling up memories of ancient magic. Once per story, she may cast a necromancy spell she doesn’t know, although she must still meet its prerequisites. Thereafter, she may learn that spell without a mentor or source. The Storyteller may deem some spells do not echo deeply into the past, primarily those newly invented by Second Age sorcerers.
I think once you have four different shaping rituals you may only be thriving by your standards
3e does a very good job of making the different kinds of sorceror/necromancer different kinds of extreme weirdo
Leviathan has been underwater for millenia
farming those motes
you fuckers aren't even ready
i think big book of spells would work really well on the Skull Diary
if you wanted to
speaking of initiations
Elegy to Starless Skies: Once per story, the sorcerer can spend a scene dramatically soliloquizing about ways the world could be more beautiful, or ways people's lives could be improved, gaining ([Appearance or Charisma] + Performance) sorcerous motes, which last for the rest of the story. If she has an audience and successfully instills a Principle related to her soliloquy in them, she gains additional motes equal to the effective Size (Exalted, p. 206) of the influenced characters. These motes can only be spent on spells that directly cultivate the world the sorcerer described.
Moonlit Revel Serenade: Once per scene, the sorcerer may gain (Performance) sorcerous motes when her music inspires a listener to impulsive action, or to passionately express his ideals. They last for the rest of the scene. If her roll leveraged a festival that is occurring or the listener's anonymity, she gains (Essence) additional motes.
Medley of a Rambling Maiden: When the sorcerer spends a scene interacting with a stranger and shares something new about her culture, learns something new about his culture, or teaches him to play music, she gains one sorcerous mote. It lasts for the rest of the story, up to ten maximum. Once per story, when she enters a city or other settlement for the first time and spends a day learning about its culture, she gains (Essence) sorcerous motes, or (Essence + Intimacy) if she has a Principle involving journeys, new experiences, or love for the world.
seguing into that, do these look better?
That does still feel like the first two are the same thing to me
i ended up shoving "doesn't need to interact" into one that already existed and making the third something else
oh
the first two are uh
shuffled around
Overall, they look fun.
#3 the first time is #1 now lol
because of alphabetizing
...that i fucked up anyway because i renamed the third
Honestly actually
Rereading through the necromancy initations in the abyssal book
I can see most of these being “Lunars did it first”
(Besides The Maw that one feels like a Nephwrack type grind)
if all three of them looked the same and they still look the same, i'll have to go back to the drawing board
Yeah the thing I see is that like
If you used this in-game
The person would need to, almost at every opprotunity, grab a random bystander and then hit both ticks at once
because there's nothing you can't do both at the same time and so why wouldn't you
Which I think would get really grating
hm
i didn't actually see that as a huge issue, because a lot of existing initiations do that too
On that topic: Do people mind taking a squiz at a necromantic initiation I made?
but...in that case, should i just obliterate the second and make something new?
I think you should have at least one that can be done without any audience whatsoever so that there is the option to do it "off-screen" for ease of play, personally
that was the (new) first one
which can now just be you dramatically giving a disney hero/villain musical monologue
no audience necessary
and you can just do it offscreen if you don't actually want to yap
That being once per story means that people are almost always going to want to do it with an audience
I think that makes more sense yeah
But this is the part of my brain that's dedicated to Ru-style cynicism of like "If you give a player a limited option where they have a bonus in an ideal circumstance, they'll probably only use it during that circumstance"
I also think if you make it specifically a villain monologue you should make an explicit caveat that summoned minions count.
As a valid audience
Because you should be encouraged to Be Prepared your Blood Apes
it's supposed to be kind of an "I Want" song for idealistic disney heroes, but can also be the classic Count Frollo I Want
or the Jafar/Yzma/etc. "i will"
Death Warding Talismans (•••): When the necromancer suffers harm from necromantic energy, any damage is reduced by one degree (Aggravated to Lethal, Lethal to Bashing). Damage that was already bashing — whether automatic levels or damage dice — is halved, rounded down.
This will not protect against effects that are merely enhanced by the grave (Such as a Deathknight's Daiklaive or a Zombie's bite) but will protect against direct usage of such power (Such as a God-Scourging Wail) or most environmental hazards within the Underworld.
Hmmm...pondering this. It won't affect most actual tools necromancers use to kill you, as 'sword' and 'undead horde' both bypass it but it keeps you safer from Pyreflame or Flesh Sloughing Waves.
what if, rather than caring about audience size, you get a bonus the first time you stunt a roll revealing your plans to someone?
Do you have a initiationn that you're specifically looking at so I can be on the same page for design desires
I don't wanna be a fuddy duddy just due to difference in expectations
huh, honestly i'd probably try to make this a bit simpler and do it as a four or five-dot with "1/day you can negate (X) levels of damage from necromantic or soul-targeting magic"
which fits in my eye for talismans
you slap em on, they burn out protecting you, and then you get some more when you rest
Maybe. This one already has a 4 dot so I was playing a bit careful to not make them all super high dot value.
uhh, the ones that i've been specifically referencing for this are Umaza's Hymns, Efficacious Demon Dances, and Dreamer of the Caul
and taking general mote-number cues from all of the initiations in Abyssals and Infernals
since they're the most up-to-date
gotcha
Dyrim's Call (•): Those deep in death hear the call of Lethe in her voice, drawing them towards her. Undead and Gods of Death who’ve heard her speak this scene count as having a Minor Tie of fear or respect toward her, whichever best fits their relationship with the philosophy of the Transcendent Course.
The last merit is rather low dot value at least.
The vibe for this necromantic initiation is that you're a champion of the natural flow of death, not a disruptor of it.
Guardian of Lethe
Not all who are drawn to necromancy are drawn by darkness within. The strongest tool to fight necromancy is necromancy itself and only a master of souls can act as shepherd to those seeking Lethe. One of the most powerful tools used by these necromancers are the Exorcist's bells; a set of Starmetal and Adamant bells, the original of which are thought to have been crafted for Saturn herself. They are passed from master to student, their clear tones cutting through the spells worked by slavers of the dead. One day, it is hoped, the ringing of these bells will crack the foundries of soulsteel that enslave the underworld.
Out of interesting, do you have a writeup for the theme of the magic style?
Love Song to the World is a sorcerous relic (Exalted, p. 470), and can be taken at character creation as a sorcerous initiation instead of requiring the Artifact Merit. Its Evocations blur the line between spell and song, and draw on the memories and philosophy of the Sidereal sage whose bones it was carved from. The chime is exceptional equipment (Exalted, p. 580) for music-based Performance rolls, and for influence rolls against characters whose lives the wielder earnestly wishes to improve.
I would presume it's like living in a musical
it's made from the opalized (starmetal) bones of a divine revolution-era journeys sid who lived to see aurora die and then spent the rest of her life preaching love and being a saccharine disney character
I thinkkkkkk
damn, that's a superpower i still haven't learned
I think the amounts and the general vibes are good, but I also think you should make the activities different so that you can't double up
do you have any suggestions? no worries if not, but if you've got something in mind i'd be happy to hear
Hrmmm
Saccherine Disney character, I think the only thing I don't feel fits is that learning about new cultures thing
ah, that one was kind of
Not because it's out of theme but because it's trivially easy to do in any game with travelling
spreading joy through the lens of Journeys
ah ic
i don't think that's a huge issue since it's got a max
You will probably be doing that in any game with travelling as a given exposition, thus you just kinda get motes for existing in a game with that concept
It's not a huge issue but it doesn't really encourage you to be weird in any particular way
fair
which I feel like is half the flavor of initiations
yeah, i can see the issue
the others i hope are like
forceful enough to avoid that?
Yeah they make sense and require you to go out of your way
it's the kind of thing that a "normal" person really ain't fit for
So I would say maybe something like "when you arrive at a new locale, if you spend a night doing nothing but raucously exploring the confines of your new environment, get a mote"
Something that demands you go out of your way to do something weird
And potentially irresponsible
i like that! making it all about a super exaggerated form of Naive Sheltered Wonder
for new and exciting places
thanks!
I don't have any cute thumbs up pictures, only got this to respond with
So is Hollow Envoy Wisdom, tbh
hollow envoy is the ancestor cult one right?
was about to go to sleep, realized i never wrote down voy's proposed changes
further realized i could do something funny
Medley of a Rambling Maiden: When the sorcerer arrives in a settlement, if this is the first time she's been there this story, she gains one sorcerous mote if she spends her entire first night meeting new people, experiencing everything she can about local culture, and raucously carousing. It lasts for the rest of the story, up to ten maximum. Once per story, when she goes on a drunken bender, embarrasses herself at a party, or otherwise causes problems for her future self during merriment, she gains sorcerous motes equal to her strongest Principle involving journeys, new experiences, or love for Creation, plus additional motes equal to the effective Size (Exalted, p. 206) of the witnesses.
encouraged to be an absolute fucking bozo in front of everyone
Panjandrum
A Panjandrum is a Raksha noble who has made perhaps one of the most dangerous decisions a Raksha can make: To discard any faith in systems in favour of their own opportunistic exploitation. Having seen that the letter and spirit of the rules often bear no similarity to each other they have decided that the only truth in law is the results of it. Capricious judges, tricksters and con-men, these nobles are perhaps some of the iconic fae creation knows, the fae who will make deceptively truthful deals with a too-wide smile on their face.
Their mastery of twisting laws extends to the very laws of fate, Panjandrums showing an expertise in shaping Creation and those that dwell within it that many castes cannot. This makes them powerful wish granters, sought out by those who feel that the natural law of the world has dealt them an unfair hand. There are no end of tales of those granted an edge by a friendly fae...and even more of those who bargained without realizing what they were trading.
Panjandrum are chaotic even by Raksha standards, delighting in havoc and upending of systems. Despite that, they are not inherently malevolent. Those who bargain with them openly, honestly and make it clear their emotional stakes of their goal can find themselves a powerful ally. Those who seek them with iron and tong and binding spells however find their own words turning to vipers in their mouths, biting the fools who speak them.
I hope this reads okay?
I like it a lot
Working on that Fae
Waking To A Dream (5m, 1wp; Simple; Instant; Essence 5): The Panjandrum can grant the wish of a willing character that expresses a wish within medium range, granting him up to six dots of benefits, divided among of the following:
-Up to two dots in an Attribute
-Up to four dots in an Ability
-Up to four dots of Backing, Contacts, Followers, Mentor, Retainers, or Resources Merits, which are drawn into his life by the end of the current session or the next one.
-Up to five dots of Mutations.
The Panjandrum can only grant effects that fall within the scope of the wish being granted but the target has no control over the specifics save for careful wording of the wish. Someone who wishes to be a famous warrior could easily be granted a mentor to train them, melee skills or the backing of bards who tell false tales of his mastery.
These dots must be immediately purchased with experience, even if the choice dots themselves end up not being what he desired, though he can go into Experience Debt to purchase them. The Panjandrum cannot affect unwilling characters this way, though they can grant wishes of characters who are unaware of the mystical nature of the wish, if their player approves.
This is notably worse than VEE (Can only do it permanently, not temporary boosts, you can't inflict it on unwilling people, doesn't give out mystical debts they can draw on) but on the other hand: It is still an in-universe very powerful effect.
So it gives that fae a big lever to pull with people.
. . . huh
i just noticed that artifact shields don't suffer the shield tag's damage penalty
...except the one in alchs!
but like
both in arms
i would be shocked if it wasn't deliberate
since the shields in Heirs, Lunars, and Arms all dodge it
and other shield weapons don't
the artifact umbrella in agents has the same stats i think
o7
Oohh artifact umbrella
makes sense! you gotta have one to pair with cerulean lute
pretty much
there's a bow too
also a sword which works very nicely for anything a sid may want
ooh, was the bow a backer artifact or another?
sid sword? 👀
@buoyant summit you're so back
yes, sid sword
it's called Naya's Model and it's got kind of a mix of math and fencing in its themes. very good if you like aiming and dueling, plays nice with Sid Melee, Even Blade, etc
siiiick
the bow is called Span-of-Heaven and has some strong energy from the constellation of the Quiver, and is kind of, like, a really bitchy sentient weapon
the first of Mars' weapon-daughters
weapon-daughters.
thats cool as fuck
i have one more question about agents cause Misc has regularly opined this - is there anything in it makes getting SMA compatibility easier? like giving SVN's kiais SMA compat for instance
in the sense of opening up new ways 'in' or changing rules fundamentally, no
that wasn't really something in my remit to tweak
to be expected but thank you for the confirmation
no worries
and thank you for being so patient
weapon compat stuff is one of those topics where i wish 3e had more centralized, like, official statements at least if not outright errata, sometimes
i don't think everything should be compatible with everything but it would have been nice if Crucible or whatever had a section talking about how and when people should consider modifying these things to suit their tables
yeah
yeah, it's not that there aren't lots of ways into SMAs already so much as there are a few weapons that just get left in the cold
(and it's slightly annoying when you're at E3 and nine charms deep into an E4 MA and can't get SMA yet, but that's a lot easier to solve)
SMA armour cap is very sad. One day we'll get a sma for someone who accidentally got a starmetal breastplate
The sid with no martial arts. XD
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

the weapon thing can be weird
like, sapphire veil's signature thing across editions is urumi, so, obviously it uses urumi (and whips too). but there's nothing that uses urumi previously published
so.... what do
not literally asking but like, sometimes you just have to make judgment calls on this kind of thing
I guess the rare Holistic Arsenal Methodology melee enlightenment sid gets to flail his urumi around with both their combat trees, so good for them
pretty much
interested in the new sword, my Sidereal swordsman uses hook-swords and sucks at larceny so I wrote my own but it'll be nice to have a larger sample of starmetal gear
i'm kind of a sword conservative
i don't really think of hook swords as swords, honestly
swordservative
I'm a huge fan of rapiers but man they turned up late in exalted for MA compat. XD
I'll admit when I make sids I keep staring at Unweaving Method. It talks to me like the Green Goblin Mask going 'I'm compatable with all ranged styles and batons and knives are both ranged weapons!'
do not listen to it
that charm is so fucking bad
I was able to make it good on an E6 Sidereal elder with Thousand Wounds Gear and Air Dragon Charms comboed in but that's about it
lmao
I generally end up ignoring it due to 'Okay, ignores armoured soak...which QC actually lists how much of their soak is armoured? I'm not making the GM have to work that shit out on-the-fly with every character'
i wish unweaving method had like an upgrade or two similar to elemental bolt attack
i might write that actually
Stares at the Entire Page of Essence Cannon Submodules
I think Alchs are a little spoiled
i love 10 points of post-soak damage
I am kinda tempted to write up an unweaving method upgrade that is like in Endings. Where it converts the energy into Lethe Energy, punching through that extra resistance undead normally get to unweaving and sending them to lethe if they get taken out by it.
But I kinda just like how Sids seems to be the only exalts that do much with Lethe. It's an element of Death that Abyssals don't touch with a ten foot daiklaive.
https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/general-exalted-thread.44/post-26644433 friend of mine wrote this unweaving method dive a few years ago
The Big Dumb Deep Dive Into Unweaving Method
So I’m currently playing a Sidereal who, for Reasons, has Unweaving Method as his main method of attack. Right now it’s a standalone Charm, I don’t have anything to combine with it (though I have some alternate methods of non-damaging attacks like...
Oh, that's a good deep dive yeah. I remember it!
The Charm also says "If she has a positive Tie to him, the attack supports it; such is her hypothetical sorrow," and I have no idea what the fuck that means
Perhaps the single most Sid Charm Statement about.
"hypothetical sorrow" is definitely a very comedically sid phrase
I admit I find the standard hook-swords kind of goofy-looking and stole an old supposedly-auzhian design for mine that are more chopping-sword shaped
Wait huh
but I really like all the hook-sword martial arts
they look all right in normal crouching-tiger-hidden-dragon scale, but when you blow them up to daiklave sizes it just gets a bit odd
this shit rules
i just don't think any of the hook swords i've ever seen are actual swords
i'm fine with hook swords because i had an on-off crush on jet from avatar the last airbender when i was a kid
like, I've spent enough time handling swords IRL, i do not think you're going to be using that thing in a fight at all like any other kind of sword
in a literal mechanistic sense
they should be called something else, it's true
Looking over this and hypothetical upgrades, it feels like an upgrade charm for unweaving would really like to steal one of the submodules that alchs got.
Interceptor Spark Emitter (6xp): When the Alchemical uses a Simple or Reflexive Charm to make an attack, she can use Essence Pulse Cannon reflexively to make it.
So they can make use of all those 'Hi, I'm a Sid Thrown or Archery charm that's also a Simple Action'
Well they aren't really called hook swords
i wish it was just standard tech in the trees
the english just called them hook swords
I'd want a mote surcharge on it for Unweaving Method given that breaks its Artifact statline for less-than-5m privilege
instead of being relegated to infernal privilege and reasonable alch stuff
But yes that is a big thing
Every Direction Arrow + Unweaving Method: "Hey, so I learned this trick from our good friend Prince Balor..."
oh wait!
i forgot that elemental bolt attack gets it too
so it's missing on uhhh
sids, abyssals, blazing solar bolt doesn't really count, and i genuinely don't even remember if lunars get one
Tenth Unweaving: Devil-Rending Hurricane Blast (12m, 1wp; Simple; Instant; Decisive-only): Make a ranged decisive attack with 13 dice out to medium range, ignoring armored Hardness; enemies immune to Wyld-exposure and the undead gain +5 Hardness against this. Double 10s on the damage roll. If it deals damage, knock the target back one range band and leave her prone, or two at 3+ damage; this can’t move her further than long range away from Strike-the-Heart. If the enemy was lower-Initiative, add +1 damage dice, or +2 of she's crashed; every three levels of damage inflicts a –1 crippling penalty on physical rolls for the rest of the scene, maximum –6.
at one point i had this in a QC but i ended up cutting it
Lunars don't really get a 'bolt'
it was kind of a thought experiment as much as anything else
mfw no moonfire eye beams
Though I do think it could totally be something they got. I'd make it like Wyldflame or something.
exercise in trying to turn unweaving technique into a fuckin' kido blast from bleach
i'd just make it stem from Cloaked In Moonfire
lunars do spit acid in a couple of places, but in general their emergency ranged attack is "I have four arms so I can carry a bow, eat attribute charms"
Lunars can get like 5 different ranged attacks yeah
i want them to get a Lover-esque "sorcerer's combat cantrip" button
it's a v different aesthetic from puking up acid blood
...I could see a Lunar Bolt in their 'I am a Witch!' charms, yeah.
oh actually, i know exactly where i'd put it
i'd make it an upgrade tree off of their thaumaturgy one and fluff it as a specific blend of lunar magic and thaumaturgy
and let them give a dinky version to minions as a thaumaturgical ritual
similar to uhhhh
pyreflame baptism
I do kinda wish there was rules for hitting people with terrain
like if I throw a Yeddim at someone what damage does that do
i think they'd probably just want you to stat a yeddim as a heavy improvised thrown weapon?
I feel an entire yeddim has to qualify for siege weapon stats
oh right those exist
yeah sure, mundane siege weapon but with close/short as its preferred ranges?
that makes sense
Collapsing Point of Destruction is definitely one of the coolest evocation names, too
Siege Weapons are funny. Never seen them used but they're very funny.
Solar Charm: Wise Ruler Invocation
Cost: 3m; Mins: Integrity 3, Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Duration: Instant
Developed in the First Age, this charm lets the user know if the decision they are making is the correct one. Unfortunetly, since it's not divination, 'correct' is what you were already going to decide to do and it makes you feel good about doing it.
hmm
are there any Form charms anywhere that aren't specifically templated as [Words] Form?
i don't think so because they're just in MAs, Sids, and one artifact that i'm aware of
and none of those break the pattern
but if there are, it means that you can make a ligier MA with Form of the First Sun...
There's a couple in core! Steel Devil
As it's for some godforsaken reason got multiple forms
Core...
Core!
are there any that do still use the word Form?
i also just fucking noticed that it doesn't even have a reflexive clause outside of mastery
this is glorpshit
Hey, you asked 😛
infernal monster awakened
alas, neither Infernal Monster Awakened nor Dark Messiah's Wrath are form-keyworded
although it would be cute if they were
Taunting Wyld Dance (5m; Reflexive; One Tick, Essence 5): An enemy attacking the Panjandrum suffers a -4 die penalty on a attacks against it. If the attacking character has a tie of Hatred, Anger or Frustration for the Panjandrum, a number of points of penalty equal to the value of that tie are converted to subtract successes instead of dice.
For a Raksha Noble (2nd Circle Demon Equivalent). Pondering if hitting ties of anger and hatred makes it too anti-abyssal/anti-infernal. Seem too much?
I missed Unweaving Method discussion ;_;
I feel like the biggest strike against Unweaving Method is just that it's incompatible with simple charms
pretty much
it's not actually the worst thing in the world, just kind of painful sometimes
There’s like one fun synergy for it that I’ve spotted, namely with the mastery effect of Ebon Shadow’s first attack charm
But one fun synergy is not really enough
I hate to say it but it's kinda 'potential charm'. XD
It's got so many things it feels like it could do.
But doesn't quite hit the mark with any of them.
I really like that it exists but yeah
Quickly, give Essence Pulse Cannon the 'can be used with any ranged martial art'.
I promice Alchs won't abuse it 😛
I don’t even know that I think that would be excessive, alchs pay out the nose for MA
do they?
it's 4 xp and they don't even need brawl.
I guess 8 'cause it takes a slot
I suppose there' sno way to get favored costs for charms
MA charms don’t take a slot but they’re the full 10xp
That's fair
And they don’t get the favored discount on ability purchases for prereqs
Not saying it’s bad, just that I don’t think it’s excessive
horrifying ....
i don't think alchemicals need more help with ma tbh they're borderline best in the game
at least with full dex offense
Would Essence Pulse Cannon really change that?
Maybe I’m underestimating it but it didn’t strike me as that crazy
Likely not but I imagine there's an element of 'better safe than sorry'.
I might have done a quick check and sadly the 'better with smashing attacks' style isn't ranged compatable
So you can't go 'gave my essence cannon smashing + sat in the smashing boosting stance'
I would totally let an Essence Cannon be used for Righteous Devil.
It's a gun, let it use the gun style
Also Righteous Devil cares a lot about reloading and thus isn't that big a boost for essence cannons
That said: If the Colossus Martial art isn't compatible with Essence Cannons I'll be a bit sad.
As that's less 'general martial arts' and more 'the martial art made for alchs'
...if that makes sense?
You know, Essence Pulse Detonation I could see being an issue
If allowed with 10 billion other things
...I kinda want to make the Ultimate Bard Alch some time.
Cerulean Lute for Aura of Harmony, Silver Voiced Nightingale for Aria of Victory, Perfected Harmony Amplifier
I can't attack but my allies gain:
-Allies add a non-Charm die on attack rolls, which is converted to a non-Charm success if their attack benefits from an ally’s distract gambit or if their target has a −3 onslaught penalty or higher. If they take a defend other action, they gain +1 non-Charm Parry for purposes of defending their ward.
-Double the Resolve bonus from positive Ties to communities they belong to or fellow group members, as well as Principles related to cooperation, belonging, solidarity, patriotism, or other positive aspects of group membership. Once per scene, they may reduce the Willpower cost to resist such influence by one. They also gain +2 non-Charm Resolve against influence that would weaken such Intimacies or create or strengthen opposing Intimacies, and against any Psyche effect.
-The martial artist and all allies who can hear the song gain a single point of Willpower at the start of each turn, which must be spent to resist influence or add a success to an action before their next turn.
-She and allies within medium range gain (higher of Essence or 3) soak and Hardness, and ignore one point of onslaught penalty.
That's spicy btw. It might be a little undercosted? Maybe 6m. but it's probably fine?
Yeah, I've been trying to keep NPC charms to being mostly multiples of 5m to make them easier for GMs to track.
If that makes sense?
legit
Hm, you know I don’t think I realized how great being an alch or lunar is for Silver Voiced Nightingale
Oh? I always feel a hair iffy on it due to the loss of 'my weapon is an artifact'. It's also got a lot of mastery. Even if going full Hasune Miko would be very funny/comboing it with the alch song charms would be funny.
I’m mainly thinking that they can combo their native charms with it
Whereas everybody else has to ask their ST if they’re screwed by compatibility
That's fair
i believe the pair of SVN-compatible artifact instruments provide artifact combat stats?
if not that could probably be an evocation
missed the reply
when the clash hits real good
E1 potential resistance solar down, luckily without injury but only due to some pretty solid dice luck on withering clash + risky decisive finisher
when this guy gets some more essence and starts throwing big brawl + adamant skin technique around he's going to absolutely smoke me, but that's OK
when?
did bro not get splattered
by that double-kill decisive
or is he a "five ox-bodies at e1" solar?
exact damage to incap and I liked him so I stunted for bashing because Telek wants everyone to grow to overcome their weaknesses
only two
zamn
admittedly if I hadn't had my artifact spear I would have been absolutely cooked, and he was throwing mundane hands
as is traditional for dynasts I bullied him with privilege
truly the greatest tradition of all time
Hrm. I might be blind, I thought there was something in solar occult for like, clearing shadowlands/wyld zones. Am I misremember or is that purely within the workings of sorceorus workings?
Wyld-Shaping Technique clears the wyld
it's worded in the most fucked ways, but later equivalents streamlined it more comfortably
sids can sacrifice a random innocent victim to reclaim parts of the wyld
not sure anyone can WST a shadowland
abyssals can't
and infernals can't either
sids can cleanse a shadowland with some other charm i think
yeah this one
Hmm.
I'm pondering the capstone for tha tmartial art i've been working on, and I was thinking a big 'hit a target and everything out to short range of it' decisive aoe with the usual decisive aoe caveats to it, but if the area it hits is a wyld zone, shadowland, or blight zone it is no longer that for the rest of the scene.
that would be wildly above par for the effort it usually takes to do that, but if it's only suppressing the effects for a scene that definitely changes the math
since everything currently is big roll to do it for a significant amount of time
(at least that i can think of)
yeah, definitely just suppressing. MA5/E4
Huh, where are those?
i thought there was a second, but i can't find it
the one i know of is the Thousand-Winged Fiddle in MFS
(base attunement 2m, so it's an evocation + 5m to make it an artifact weapon)
svn-compatible artifact instrument is hilarious
which means that it's time to combine SVN with earth dragon...
hunting horn time, baby
okay time to rip gorgon apart for fun pieces and make my Bloody Hand her sword for realsies this time
smash attacks at range
mods, yeah, right there this poster. kill them with hammers
The nefarious thrown Sidereal
evil prone penalties
oh yes, I should add Rotten Leaf Arrested to my Infernal's arsenal, I haven't ragdolled anyone with flying spear technique yet
it'll be fine!! there are like half a dozen ways to do that already!
what's one more, applied to one of the best MAs around?
(unrelated: damn, Burning Branch goes hard, I love my (Essence) autosux double 10s decisive that I can just throw out once a fight for cheap)
wait how
I wouldn't call SVN one of the best MAs
for your juvenile prank you will know nothing but chained smash attacks
But yeah
i meant "ranged smashing applied to earth dragon"
i thought that said "i see reddit"
which would have been much worse
and this one was me pointing to hunting horn (instrument that's also a giant hammer) fusing [SVN-compatible instrument] and [ED-compatible giant hammer]
'twas a jest
I was gonna make an Insect Glaive artifact at some point
wanna know what stopped me?
the insect?
I just stole the name of Lu Bu's weapon and called it a Sky Piercing Halberd
IIRC I had it closer to a Direlance
anyway i think you could do an IG and just say "here's your special little guy it counts as a familiar" and end it there
yeah but I wanted the evocations to mimic the powder-and-buff systems
because I'm teh sort of person who has JE SUIS MONTE tattoed on their forhead* (*not really but I would)
oh no, i meant "end it there" as in end the familiar argument
that'd be your attunement bonus "here's your blorbo, this is its stat block"
it was mostly like, trying to figure out how the fuck to stat it up
"it counts as a familiar (or doesn't)"
makes sense
as like, guidance for 'sure here's what a spirit familiar might look like'
might revisit it sometime
i'd probably use the machine spirit template with no demat
or maybe with demat!
and with the demon excellency so it's easier to level up your little guy
Cost: 2m? Mins: Ess 1

When you make a Withering attack with The Black Blade apply effect based on Wakefulness
Closed: Attack becomes Smashing as the exalt crashes the stone-scab sheath of the black blade against their foe.
Slitted or above: Add the Wakefulness rating as automatic successes on the withering damage roll.```
im really fucking around over here.
please give me EXTREME RANGE. give me some SOAK REMOVER. give me PERMANENT ANTI-DEATHLORD KITING. look at these things we give the sidereal host motes for
black blade of sorrows
much like Shaping defenses, i imagine that any deathlord would by necessity have a way to go "stop that you weasel fuck" to anyone trying to range kite them
yes it's called 'the circle of deathknights that is their miniboss squad'
or in the lover's case 'can you kite a blizzard fucko'
mostly bc i ripped gorgon for its original stats and then went fuck. shit. fuck when i realized its entire charmset was e2+
ligier has that explicitly (but still no shaping defense) but any Big Boss Goober that dies instantly to keep-away probably would have died 6000 years ago
and gorgons wakefulness gimmick is fun but i can ignore the poison gimmick in favor of Something Else
she doesn't range band hard enough to stop Sid Thrown because that just keeps moving backwards at like 3 bands per round relative (they knock her back 1 with every attack) while throwing from Extreme
it's so toxic
(I say, approvingly, with a thrown sid)
it is really funny that gorgon has a whole one e1 evo
look, it's either laugh or cry
chopping tag is worth half an evocation i think,,,
I should remake my journies sid from ex2. The Seafolk are still a thing, right? Hmm. An artifact atlatl. Would ti be broken to make permanent longfangs for throwing? Is them nto auto-returning an important balance point?
What are seafolk
the good inhabitants of fishman island oppressed by the world government, of course
a first age human variation designed to live in the far west, underwater
the western equivalent to airfolk, dunefolk, and treefolk
I mean the niobharans exist that's true
well. Existed?
aquatic beastfolk communities and even polities still exist especially in the Undersea
gorgon really has been me going: wow okay there's such a cool little wakefulness mechanic it adds autosux on withers that's nice. oh its a little hard to stack well okay, im sure it'll be fine and realizing oh its just spend a wp for a scenelong +1 if i don't roll enough tens, and i get one charm that just inflicts an okay penalty and.... the rest of a kit locked away at e2 and e3 damn?
the Niobraran League itself is long gone
the big thing with her was she was a scout for her community who, uh. Could not read. And inherited a position that had a lot of paperwork. A lot of paperwork. For a woman entirely unsuited to things that weren't Big Game Hunting and Exploring Deep Trenches.
so! we write my black blade of sorrows and we'll give it some fun things
the Old Realm broke it
Theres an entire Fishman island in the west
Like where normal people live in a society with fish people
Theres also otter people, the fish people Leviathan lives with
Who else
Oh the guys that live by the realm
the Undersea of today is probably very very different than the Niobraran League was for a lot of reasons
Really hard to imagine the 10% of those guys that survived still kept the grudge that hard
Adversaries has a funny person called Sawana who has lore about it that namedrops the Dakkar Collective as a lesser confederation if that tells you anything
niobrarans weren't human
Right I know there's lots of options, but it was more 'her backstory in ex2 specifically had her being a Seafolk from one of their larger cities and partaking in that civilization' though Ican't for the life of me remember which one since it was more than a decade ago
fish-humans are different
niobraran is a political term
so it was a question of 'does she just plop in as is or do I need to do a rewrite'
the Spoken weren't humans
E3 specifically says that humanity is largely a political designation
technically beastfolk are all humans
also yeah wasn't there a first age solar who sided with the league because she was an aquatic beastfolk from them?
oh, "Niobraran" as the bespoke leviathan people was used like
the Spoken were their own thing though before the Old Realm genocided them
once in lunars (and is used by the fandom that i see)
to refer to the Spoken's race, separate from the Niobraran League, aiui
I think that was a case of the concept evolving although its been a while
i wish there were Spoken
and dragon kings
although those just suffer the No Rulebook plight
there are dragon kings discussed in Agents although they do not get rules
dragon kings have a section in alchemicals!
there's dragon kings in autochthon!
I was so excited when I read taht!
they're called the people of the molten sun or something like that
they're in there with the sapient rat colonies
I don't think the line explicitly says so until Agents but the Old Realm did just explicitly commit genocide on the Spoken the way they did all of the big non human races except for the Dragon Kings
jungle stalkers
Thats the spice
Actually borb, question for you
Can the sentient wolves in the east Exalt
Fie
the Spoken were a break from this rule in that the Voice in the Trench found some fuckin way to do it but I have to assume that just meant they had some kind of lower soul higher soul split
i assume it's that they were bespoke designs for the Spoken
Man how many people have cracked the code on making Exaltatons
instead of bespoke designs for humans
outside of Incarnae? Ketu
er
and Sachavarell & Oramus
it was before it was the voice
and then the other Yozis co-opted Solar exaltations, and the Deathlords co-opted Solar exaltations, and...okay the five elemental dragons aren't Incarnae and neither is Autochthon, but they're part of the same political body
so Ketu and the two weirdest primordials
So is the Dark Mother an incarnae?
oh right her
probably not
she's apparently primordial-adjacent
in that she's tied to a fundamental force of Creation (the Lethe & Sea of Shadows, as the proto-Underworld)
the Abyssals are neverborn juiced, not necessarily Deathlord juiced, and the deathlords got some of the tricks from the Yozi, so we're mostly on "Primordials, major gods, the Elemental Dragons and then The Dark Mother and whale boy just kind of tacked on the end there"
and so you've got the divine rebellion, the dark mother, the Weirdo Primordials, the voice in the trench (incarna), nebiru (incarna), aurora (incarna), ketu (primordial-adjacent)
whale boy was a major god
also i sure fucking wish the Abyssals were neverborn-juiced
there are so few whispers charms
i think there's Deathlord juice in the Abyssal mocktail
the deathlords are themselves hopped up on neverborn juice and I don't think they're Exalting anyone without it
Abyssal charms are nicely deathlord-shaped though
nah, there's...a little bit of deathlord juice in their charmset
not even a fraction as much as primordials to infernals, but
most abilities have some obvious DL influence
some with big trees
deathlord salt on the rim of the drink
it's kind of neverborn-as-seen-via-deathlord
like the stealth gangstalking tree is heron mojo
and the classic resistance Take These Chains suite
and the survival ice witch bullshittery that we now know is lover stuff
I figured the dark mother was a Yozi or Incarnae that died and went “fuck. okay. fine. I’ll play with new toys.” Since then
she's apparently tied to pre-Divine Revolution death
the way it was before the Underworld existed
so def not dead yozi
and dead incarnae just kinda die, as per aurora and the voice in the trench
same as other gods
eh~ it’s a mystery box innit? shove a fun answer in when you need it yaknow?
ye
insofar as it needs an answer at all
both the Dark Mother and Ketu seem mostly like handwaves to excuse the existence of the new weird exalts
(Ketu's apocryphal, sure, but probably the best illustration of "entity that exists entirely to sit off the map throwing exaltations at people")
which one's ketu
elemental dragons
dream-souled
oh yeah them too
ah right
also the maidens
who are just
"oooooh, we showed up magically and no one knows where we came from"
"nobody knows anything about us, but we have an agenda"
the maidens and the other incarna are bad examples here because they do stuff
you can make declarations of asspulling from anyone
we just don't have a dark mother book
because that's liminals, which doesn't exist yet
presumably she will have content when she has content
The Maidens aren't just giving you exaltations, they're also your bosses
yeah but they don't show up in person
the elemental dragons also don't do stuff, nothing wrong with not doing stuff, but as patrons all of those are in the general category of "doesn't matter, get on with the exalting" as opposed to Sol, who will appear in the timeline doing stuff and being tired of life and so on, or Luna who shows up for a chat
all of the Incarnae are just in gay baby jail forever
yeah they do, you can go meet them and ask for new charms
Sol is the least active one of the big seven and even he sends text messages to his new Zeniths
and at one point mediates a strike action
slash riot
that was a long-ass time ago was it not?
What do guys think the Games are
EU4
my mental image remains Azad from The Player of Games
I don't have a specific what but im sure the inspiration was from part of the cosmogeny in Gods of Pegana
if I was at my computer i could find the exact thing but it's pretty direct there that the gods of pegana view existence as the game itself i think? id take that just to mean that the Games are at least in part a sort of heightened awareness of reality
higher state of consciousness and all that
this is why i had him watch a flower war!!!
Well it's a game that's causing the active downfall of society due to it's addictive nature so I must assume it's League of Legends
Leage
I do not make the gifs
i appreciate that it's the mandy skeleton
... an artifact flame piece with a 'fuller auto' mode....
...huh
"artifact flame piece with a multiattack because it's automatic" feels like the kind of thing that i'd have seen a bunch
but instead haven't seen at all
(in homebrew, not official content, i know official content shies away from gunliness)
Speaker made one for his Autocthonian ganger
I've put an effect like that on a few weapons here and there.
Burst: This weapon deals damage as if it was one size larger against battle groups and legendary size targets.
Not a full on multi-attack but something to play up 'each attack is actually several'.
righteous devil has a multiattack and also does five other things that make your firewand 20x better
so there's not much of a use case unless you really like archery
righteous devil is an MA though, so you can't put it on your sun-killing abyssal archer or your wood element deeb sniper
Oh right important thing from flower war- the jobber mentioned here got his Infernal exaltation and the abyssal watched it happen! Yay! His whispers got in a fight with Ebby for narrative control
let's go??
i hope he gets a really good showing somewhere else
but not after he eats shit and gets clowned on again
Cinnereon is gonna Have A Time
He got a neomah for his coadjucator and certainly this will be normal for him
moving up in the world
moving downwards, kind of lateral, not straight down
Here's a vague pondering - For attribute exalts, would letting them use str charms with weapons that don't use str...actually hurt balance?
Like I'm not sure what 'An alchemical can use str charms with a bow but not a crossbow' really avoids breaking.
As it doesn't avoid 'getting benefits without having strength', as having strength is needed for the charms themselves.
Can't they already do this?
Oh wait I misread the question
Never mind
damn, where did all those autosux come from
weird foundry formatting from attack roll threshold sux
it only applied the 22 init + 3 extra dice i had
Invoke Chaos (10m, 1wp; Reflexive; One Scene; Essence 5): Automatic successes in hostile actions and damage rolls against the Panjandrum are downgraded to one rolled die each. Failed attacks against the Panjandrum botch if they have more 1s than (Attacker's essence).
I am being an ass on NPCs.
the reckoner and knife infernal keep killstealing from him as soon as he gets into melee range of something, and he's the only person that's talking this fight other than a blood ape
hope is having a normal one
hate when that happens
yippee, getting 11 sux on a knowledge roll and getting to riffle through the ST's notes on a later antagonist
i love taking derangements
This rocks
post-fight i got to see a weirdo that...i don't actually know what they are! but the fight was all ink-based clones and summoning and the description really made me think some kind of Neverborn soul, which is neat!
and now we're e2
and i have...just under 50 fucking xp to spend lol
he definitely needs to learn how to read eventually, so he can actually send a report to his boss by something other than "other deathknight sends a familiar" lmao
hmm...spend four dots and one charm on disfavored abilities, or be responsible?
what am i saying, Hope is not a responsible creature
time for reckless spending
oh neat, didn't realize the green lady's who my group's purplesid backed
Illusion of Fairness: The Panjandrum's ability to twist natural laws is great but not limitless, always requiring some method through which they can be broken. A character affected by a Shaping Effect or Sorcerous Curse inflicted by the Panjandrum are also provided a riddle giving hints of an esoteric method that will undo the Shaping Effect or curse. These are generally a Serious Task once understood, though they can be as easy as an Inconvenient Task or as painful as a Life-Altering Task depending on the Panjandrum's opinion on the affected character. The Panjandrum can provide the same method for more than one shaping effect or curse.
This make sense to people?
should clarify whether it's doing a thing for the QC or not, bc if it is that's way stronger
otherwise makes sense
It's not intended to, no. it's intended to be more 'do some random mythic bullshit' with the task values just there to indicate Usual Difficulty.
Like to use the example in my head 'They'll remain stone until the castle raises above the clouds' David Xanatos has the castle deconstructed and put on top of a sky-scraper
yh i'd just give examples then
Fair
The intent is that it gives an 'out' on a QC that is very liberal with shaping effects and curses.
If the PCs don't have someone who can cure such effects/their shaping defences fail
it's not punny enough of an artifact, but i'm now rotating an evocation for one of mine that's just called No Skin Off My Back...
that lets you picture of dorian gray a rando to take physical harm when you would, or maybe when you commit a social faux paus
lmfao
Prototype Replicating Exaltation Matrix
Cost: 10m, 1wp; Mins: Intelligence 6, Essence 3
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Theurgic Emulation Converter, Champion-Forged Panoply Conduit
Orichalcum extensions to god-crystal lattices allow the Alchemical access to the unique essence flows of the most powerful of beings, simulating the narrative power of Raksha and the Divine Gifts of other exaltations for reproduction.
When the Alchemical or an allied character in medium range incapacitates a supernatural being, the Alchemical can save a Pattern of their essence flows. These patterns can be expended as part of a three day project to imbue an existing Artifact with (Target's Essence) additional evocations based upon the powers of that supernatural being, which may alter the artifact's thematics towards those of the supernatural being. These evocations will not generally directly copy existing charms but instead draw upon the identity and capabilities of the incapacitated being. A Fire Aspect Dragonblooded may imbue a sword with flames, while the Unconquered Sun's Light may make the wearer of a circlet speak with the authority of a creation-ruling mandate.
An individual supernatural being can only provide a single Pattern once per story, no matter how many times they are defeated and must be incapacitated in genuine conflict. In addition, each artifact can only be imbued with a single Pattern, though evocations granted by a Pattern do not count towards the maximum evocations an artifact can have.
The Imbuing Alchemical can use Great Maker’s Panoply to awaken evocations granted by a Pattern this way, even if they did not originally craft the artifact.
||Yes, this is Megaman's Copy System||
Pedantic: Fire Aspect, btw, not Caste
hell yeah megaman
...vague pondering: Do you think it would be out of place/a problem to have an anti-battle group charm that hits order's dice stacking especially hard? As well, the ability to go 'hello, I have a billion order dice so I can make 5 dice peasants attack with 25 dice' is kinda silly.
My thoughts was 'Penalize a battle group's attack, ramp that penalty up heavily if they're benefiting from Order dice'.
sounds cool
On the brain because I came up with a fun name for a charm and thought it seemed the best place to put it.

Rebuke the Dialectic of Fist And Flame

Prerequisite Charms: A couple.
The Wanderer tests wyld power against the might of iron and hate, dispelling thier influence upon the world.
When an opposing enemy commander makes a command action, the wanderer can oppose it with a (Charisma + [Presence, Performance or War]) roll. Each success on the Wanderer's roll subtracts one success from the command action.
Reset: Each commander can only be affected this way once per scene.
Keys:
Extinguished Flame: Each 1 or 2 on the opposing command action inflicts 1 die of withering damage upon the commanded battlegroup after resolving the command action.
A Better Way(Extinguished Flame, Essence 3): Each magnitude lost from Extinguished Flame's withering damage restores one lost magnitude of an allied battle group as enemies are inspired to defect.
That’s extremely cool
everyone loves my solar babyface (the infernals decided he was Too Cool to kill)
(sorry I one-tapped him, I really thought he had Adamant Skin, round 2 will presumably go longer)
i really thought he had enough soak and hardness stuff and didn't want him to completely invalidate telek's build
now i will be getting help on my characters
it's round 1, everyone else was beating up on Heroic Mortals and Adversaries terrestrials, so it makes sense that he was not quite ready for artifact weapon beatdown and will be more locked in next time
if telek had a normal spear with no fire and didnt make that super clash work he was gonna get heaven-thunder-hammered
mostly bc that clash was a Ox-Stunning Blow
yeah I was a little worried there but luckily full excellency + WP successfully went brr
Jerun the Mighty is a fishman (marlin) who wants to end the guild's predation on his people, so he's seeking to become The Strongest In The Southwest
so far he has charmed 2/3 infernals in the group
by being Sting (92)
having a spear duel with a man who simply has a giant spike attached to his face instead of an actual weapon is the right blend of cool and silly
exalted fishman karate...
i think its good that his tactic was to try and smash burning branch out of the way, focusing his hand strikes on telek's limbs and aiming for the headbutt/stab as his cashout
yeah, it's an interesting matchup physically because Telek can use telekinesis on his spear and has bronze skin for punching and blocking, so both of them have fisticuffs-assisted spiking
they're good rivals!!!
Telek, like any good dynast, gets basically none of this power from his native charms and is channelling the power of raw privilege
spear (stolen), sorcery (qaf), outfit (pretentious)
man if this guy had exalted as a deeb he would have been such a Young Master stereotype
he's kind of getting there but he has too much PTSD to really lock into the domineering stuff yet
i think he still is, it's just as the Arrogant Young Master first arc villain who couldn't actually cut it in his sect and sold his allegiance to a demonic sect instead
he's still deebing it up publicly, but he's plagued by Wicked Loyalties and his own self-doubt
he has literally gone off to found his own shitty wasteland sect where he occasionally grabs random people and refines them into crafting ingredients, so that makes sense
his manse is this big broken-off fragment of Qaf that landed in Metagaos and had a town steadily carved into it because having the odd 1CD abducted by the mad infernal who lives on the peak is a better deal than trying to live in Metagaos normally
hmm
requesting a look at a charm, once i finish writing the last bit
initially i had it as one e1 charm + one e2 charm, but now it's just an e2 and i'm not sure if i need to split it again and/or make some of the effects higher
mm, actually, i don't have good mechanical ideas for the third option, so i'll just post it as-is

The bearer is a blade, swinging like a hangman's noose. She knows that there is no threat in a sword unheld — so she wields herself with reckless disregard, mantled in her darling's name.
After a scene spent stirring the ghosts within Oizys and inciting them to neurotic fear, the Hand drapes herself in one of the following mantles:Blood-Mad Mongrel: The ghosts froth with wordless rage and terror, and the Hand always seems a hair's breadth from violence. She gains the Hideous Merit, and characters can't bolster their Resolve against threaten rolls made by her or leveraging her presence, except with Intimacies whose subjects are physically nearby, such as a Tie of Immaculate faith with an Immaculate temple within shouting distance. An ally benefiting from her distract gambit adds (her Appearance - target's Resolve) dice on the decisive damage roll.
Pretty Little Thing: The ghosts grasp at the tatters of desire, fearful of forgetting all they coveted and lusted for, unaware their memories are long since lost. The Hand seems an extension of her soulsteel arms, nothing but a resplendent display of art. She loses the Hideous Merit if she had it, and her Anchor adds (her Appearance - target's Resolve) non-Charm dice on instill and persuade rolls that leverage her as an art piece. Characters without Ties to her treat her as an object, rather than a person, which is a Psyche effect that can be resisted for a scene by spending one Willpower when she enters somewhere a servant shouldn't be, displays significant independence, or takes a harmful, threatening, or obviously supernatural action.
Sinner-Eating Jackal: The Hand stokes the ghosts' neuroses above all else, reminding them of old obsessions and forgotten secrets. The Hand seems both furtive and intrusive, a person with everything to hide and who knows what everyone is hiding.
[people with something to hide think you're on to them; nerve breaks when they lie, penalty on stealth and larceny]The Hand may only don one mantle at a time, and it lasts until she spends a scene changing it.
Dissonant: This Evocation gains a cost of five motes, and its duration becomes one day.
no good ideas on the last, "lying" in exalted is kinda fucky
but i'd at least like opinions on the first two
he follows in the tradition of all good sith lords
he's such a shithead i lvoe him
THE BOY THE BOY
He's so majestically awful I love him
Oh, huh! Not how I envisioned him! Very cool, changes my image of the guy somewhat.
@marsh garden Did you see that someone's doing an Exalted game in the PMoon setting over on the discord?
I probably can't apply and my knowledge of PMoon is approximate at best, but it's just an interesting mashup
Huh, I'm actually curious what the vision was
A little more of a rough and tumble, I Am A Warrior type
No ping for the PJM avatar amongus....
Perhaps that's because the main scene I encountered him in was in the whole Harkonnen Pools Context
Did not know that's a PJM avatar, my bad
this is fair
I'm kind of targeting "this guy is Ethnically Realm" in the structure
ethnically wán?
not quite sure of the translation there, I admit
(GRAVES BACKSTORY SPOILERS) ||he was a senior Tepet mortal armiger who got his Bleak Exaltation at Futile Blood||
||so he's got and keeps those aristocratic lines even in death||
hopefully that makes sense, hah
oh, i was just talking about like
ethnicity in the Realm is weird
the Wán are sort of the biggest one on the eastern Isle iirc
the classical dynast look is them
ah! Sorry, that's me just being a relatively new transplant to the system, then
Correct
a major influence on his design was also Villeneuve's Feyd-Rautha, since I thought the idea of those catlike, kind of otherworldly and deathly pale features veined with corrupt Essence like marble really sold the Abyssal look
With the caveat of 90% of all humanity, in terms of evolution, JUST died
Like thats what I mean
i think the vision of 3e is a solid yes on that one so that's just gotta be squared with the bottleneck somehow
700 years ago is quite a long time
Yeah I figured its something not to think too much about
Not in terms of like
Making new ethnicities though I would think
It is
Ethnicity really isn’t that high a degree of variation, it’s mostly just common superficial features bounded by geography
There are some rare more significant genetic markers attached like that one ethnic group in East Asia with the huge spleens that make them very good divers
But mostly it’s just that people in a given valley are going to all end up with similar face shape over the course of five or six generations
I admit I tend to massage the 90% figure slightly because even with magic nonsense it doesn't quite hold up, but assuming your homeland wasn't literally eaten by faeries then a decent number of the pre-existing societies should have survived
A generation being about 20-30 years, that’s
Like 28 generations since the contagion?
90% of all life in Creation or something is the figure i think for what the contagion wipes out?
i'm gonna be real this is one of those "don't stare directly at the sun" things for me
And yeah, if anything you might see intensification of ethnic traits
Due to loss of local genetic diversity
I put that one down to "yeah that is the kind of thing people write when plague ravages the land and the world is being invaded by legions of doom fae" and adjust it down to merely one and a half black deaths at once but I admit I am more touchy about that one due to being a grumpy epidemiologist
Yeah I imagine this is the caveats to work with
But at the same time its interesting to take at face value
How the FUCK do we have megafauna
Theion really liked dinosaurs so reality naturally gives them an edge :V
looks at Dragon Kings
i mean in fairness the black death only hit europe
and uh
parts of the middle east? i think?
unless those were parts that are "also europe"
I believe it ravaged the entirety of eurasia
wait fr
yep
okay time to do some googling, i love the american education system lol
But yeah, I think we’d only see a decline in ethnic differentiation if the survivors were all concentrated in one place
Also doesn't Creation have a fucking massive population due to being massive-er than Earth?
Well yeah but thats kinda irrelevant when we have a percentage
10% survivors would be a lot more overall though
90% of everyone dying is Bad
but yeah
And even then its only a percentage of that 10%
Because everyone then also died to the fae
Well, but if 10% is 10,000 survivors the ability to recover is different than if it’s 10,000,000
And then presumably began starving to death
i assumed that the 90% was including the fae sloppy seconds
damn
THEN the balorian crusade happened
Thats why everyone hates the dowager
She tops the leaderboard
most people don't actually know it was the dowager
No I meant the deathlords
this is also why I change that number because 10% survival rate of all life across all Creation before the fae invasion is "welp, that's all she wrote" territory
Ye
most of them aren't actually described as hating her even after that, it's mostly like...lingering fear or continued pity
and then the Eye's a sicko that just wants to crack her open
I mean it kinda was
Then Big S stepped up
I think Voy’s point is more that if we’re competing for kills, she inspires significant envy
From everyone
yh fair
no, as in "forget about the fae, the world is done for" territory, because you do in fact need 90% of all life forms other than man
It requires something of a handwave, yeah
I believe in prior eds it was something like 50% of the Isle, 90% of the Threshold, which is a bit too hard of a line but makes more sense
If 90% of bacteria died IRL that would be very, very bad
would be neat if they got some sickos to work out how they could keep the 90% of life figure and have magic salvage it
I dont actually think we know if bacteria exist in Exalted
I’m making a more general point about food webs
Ofc
But anyway, one possible answer is that Heaven fuckin’ scrambled for the next two-hundred years
Or more
I had occasionally considered inventing some kind of creation-wide Yu-Shan Ark project that was derailed halfway through by heaven going onto full lockdown, just to justify having a bunch of weird otherwise extinct beasties hanging out in heaven
that's cute
Could even use that to play to the current graft-ridden state of the Celestial Bureaucracy
Journeys Botanical Garden is an idea I've had kicking around in the back of my head
And say that a lot of gods got a lot of emergency powers during the Contagion which still haven’t expired
(had to come up with Crystal's favorite place in Heaven)
This might be my new headcanon
Meanwhile the Jadeborn: "I don't think the contagion was that big a deal. People left us alone for a while. "
the contagion and raksha invasion afterward surely had no lasting and traumatic impacts upon members of the sidereal host. they are all very normal because of it
meanwhile, the jadeborn:
(they all died)
actually, do the jadeborn have any kind of intrinsic disease resistance?
would they be more fucked because of smaller populations or less fucked because of robust biology?
They're all essence users and notably durable ones.
They also live in isolated vaults.
I'm sure the Silver Pact is also completely normal in this respect. Surely.
huh, new character concept just hit
if I ever get to play in an elder campaign I'll have to pull out purplesid (medicine) (there for the contagion)
Both them and dragon kings reincarnate but unlike the DK jadeborn are sapient to start and their souls can't be permanently destroyed, even by spirit destroying effects.
So they avoided 'fae invasion permanently fucked our numbers'
CPOC?
Drifts is very normal about his memories of the contagion
I also have solidified the God oc I will eventually need to stat out
Oh I didn't realize he was that old
He isn't, but his previous reincarnation was there for it
Aha
yep, cpoc/craft (sculpture)/medicine/sorcery is what the concept is saying to me
they have a whole memorial garden full of statues of people no one's seen since the Balorian Crusade
I also was thinking more of the God OC I need to stat out eventually
Corona, Goddess of Valor
One of Conky's Nepo-Babies who inhabits an aspect of his valorous nature in combat but who essentially locked herself out of heaven during the Contagion and is so traumatized from all the death that despite being a goddess of battle who loves fighting she has done everything in her power ever since to make sure she never has to witness a war again
Autochthonians, in a conversation about the Great Contagion: "90% of your population???! How are you still around? You must have numbered in the low hundreds, at that point!"
Creation-born: "..."
She was very nakedly formed into being from me watching Fate Babylonia

Extremely normal, having disease-based trauma and using a disease-based martial art XD
I think the Silver Pact is more normal about this purely because they have a rather faster turnover so less of them were there for it, but I can't imagine the survivors are less shaped by it
Corona is most likely going to be an NPC I play if the pbp ever gets to the Realm Arc
Sids: Known For Normalcy
Because she's going to see the War kicking off and go WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT
Also she's half escstatic and half terrified of the solars being back
"Cool I loved wrestling my little brothers and sisters but also they keep Doing Wars"
well the contagion is like, a spooky magic disease
i'm not sure it's working the way normal ones do
Yeah
You didn't survive because You Were Cool
you survived because you got infected and it just spun the wheel
I think essence users were stated to be slightly less owned
but it still killed elder exalts and third circles and so on so clearly it was only slightly
Incredibly hilarious to imagine a big demonic meeting and Ligier just watches one of his demon-brothers fall dead on the spot
"Hmm. Ah shit."
Wonder if that caused any personality changes in Yozi
speaking of, did you end up getting on to speaker? i need his ass for the Sid scenes
I did but let me do so Again
I also need to bug Noelle because she DID
sign up to be the Lookshy representive
I have applied to that PJM Exalted game
I'm still very confused on like
What does it mean for the Exalted to be in the City
yeah, i was trying to figure out the timeline and like
how the City coexists with Yu-Shan
I am thinking about trying to make an Ex-Middle Siddie work
a Siddle if you will
Though I'm wondering how well a Pure Brawl Sid works
very
A lot of grappling
brawwwwwwlllllll
speared boar struggle very funny for my cerulean lute girlie
hit 'em with the
Actually Speared Boar Struggle is just Peak Middle huh
So the goal I would assume
Is to bump your Defense as high as it can go to sacrifice all of it for a big wham
honestly you don't need to buff it at all, just use the post-getting-hit defences from there and Resistance
consider: ring abyssal
nah you just accept you're getting nugged and be a soakbeast
they banned solaroids
Yeah
fuck
no solarroids
go "I subtract three from my def, you hit me", tank it and then lock in the autograpple
ring abyssal is so cool though...
it would be
The character ideas I had so far are:
-
Dragon-Blooded Liu Association-subsidiary office Fixer who was orphaned by the Smoke War, and is hoping to make sure that never happens to anyone again.
-
Sidereal ex-Middle Little Brother who doesn't feel any connection to his family since they are unable to remember who he is anymore.
-
Alchemical full-body augment user akin to Multi-Crack who thinks everyone needs to get on this.
-
LEAST fleshed out by far, but Hearteater or Lunar Bloodfiend sounds rad.
eventually you can respond to someone punching you by automatically grappling them and killing their wife instead of taking damage, but that requires E4
i need to workshop the actual PC for decent presentation, but i'm thinking about either a-
BLOODFIEND BRAIN
i was thinking umbral bloodfiend, but
God the hellish task of Exalted character creation
it's become surprisingly simpler as I build More Guys
the thing that's really hell is Evocations
I like doing evos
was gonna present either an umbral bloodfiend or an alch who went hard into debt trying to join the Gaze Office
yeah man just homebrew 1-2 charms every single time you make a character
it just don't click
and completely failing because that's like...an actual office
Ah okay
Also can I ask what the point of effective strength is
Cuz it feels like the way the FoS table works that effective strength does't matter without a bonus on top
to the roll
Don't you need a certain amount of Str to be allowed to attempt large enough feats?
you need both, but it's good to have a bit of extra effective strength because your excellency can get you into the low end of strength 7+ feats on that alone
but you can't actually do 'em until you have more strength
honestly kind of an odd system
it is so ridiculous
truly one of the Charms Of All Time
nobody is ever allowed to lowball an attack against you again, lest you just eat it in exchange for a mega slam
A Brawl Resistance focused Sid seems like the play
Hostility Acceptance Technique is also very neat
