also I may be reworking this character because the GM is saying he thought that you had to use the MA you were using a charm for
so like my Toad is 3, if I use a Toad MA charm I have to use Toad unless I use White Veil with it (which is at 5)
whereas I thought you always got to use your highest MA for your dice pools generally speaking
it's how I've always seen it run
That’s wrong
Like PAOC says it’s possible to add a soulsteel charm of some sort
And maybe an adamant charm
I refuse to believe that auntie 'I know literally every martial art' from the Sid book doesn't know tricks for most martial arts that most masters don't even know exist. XD
I've basically countered with 'okay, so I just always use Excellent Abyssal White Veil for one mote on every attack, then'
since excellencies are MA charms
but if the GM rules against it I'm going to have to rework things a good bit because it makes mixing more than like, two MAs way too much of an XP sink
She just builds new SMAs :P
if you need toh ave all of them at max to be functional
Alchemical-Unique Charms
The Jadeborn do not have all the capabilities of their Alchemical Kin. As such, they may not learn the following Charms: Vat Surrogate Reweaving System, Colossus-Class Upgrade Installation, Integrated Artifact Transmogrifier, Transcendent Multimodal Artifact Matrix, Programming Language Eloquence, Clarified Data Assimilator, Infinite Clarity Consciousness Simulation
Altered Charms: Empathy Simulation Engine affects gaining and learning Divergence, instead of Clarity. Alter Ego Dissimulation Cortex, Embedded Armor Plating, Hierarchical Dogma Lock, Clockwork Companion Template substitute a day of meditation with the Rite of Reconfiguration.
In other news - Going through the entire alch book for 'these charms shouldn't exist for jadeborn' took a while. XD
If you could point out the rules text in a book, faq or errata that I could show to him?
As long as your weapon or lack thereof is compatible, you can mix styles
Gimme a minute
there's this but it's explicitly for using charms that are between two styles
This means you can make a Toad Punch with Rat charms
For the same reason you can punch with toad while not using any charms at all
welll, I've presented it to the GM so i can only hope
I'm not giving guys who already have a full excellency the 3e Sidereal Excellency too
if the Gm rules more strictly I'll be dropping MAs and probably just be a generic assassination missile setup in combat. Maybe use abyssal thrown.
Solar thrown always weirded me out by being the only solar charmset with like...a very clearly defined identity
Brawl and Melee are very just 'do the thing, good'
While thrown is 'Be A Ninja'
Brawl has some amount of mechanical identity, at least
thrown feels like it was written by the one designer who just really wanted to do night caste shinobi
oh yeah no abyssal thrown is great
I like Brawl’s Weird Onslaught Bullshit
i'm impressed because it's actually not crazy hard to like... create good flavor with something that's like "divine levels of skill"
I was just looking forward to being more toxic than a DOTA 2 guild
"study the world and its history, and then work from first principles to recreate the wyld-shaping that forged the world" is how i'm reflavoring Wyld-Shaping Technique presently, and like... that's tight as fuck?
...huh, that's a weird 2e fact I'd not realized until I started this project.
Jadeborn souls are in that 'no, it's actually indestructible indestructable, even if you toss it into oblivion' list alongside exaltations.
I kinda really want to do a Solar or Sidereal Cartographer one day. Someone who's so good at it that the world shifts to line up with the maps they draw, rather than the other way around.
In our Nobilis game one of the high Aspect characters improved the Philly roads by picking them up and rearranging them
At least one
like
But yes, they should have identity
Abyssal Trees are based on the Deathlords and shit
Thrown stems from the Black Heron
Resistance draws on the First and Forgotten Lion
...okay, yeah. I'm going to just scrap the entire Chaos Pattern charmset for this project as too much of this is 'Hello, I am Literally 3e Sidereal Charms' and I don't feel comfortable writing 'Oh yeah, you can just steal Unweaving Method and the Sid Excellency' becuase I know what the concept of 'role protection' and 'game balance' is. XD
I think they can be less specific than Abyssal trees
To some degree you might be able to draw on the UCS?
Solar Larceny, War, and Resistance are all based on Conan the Barbarian
(this is roughly 70% shitpost0
yeah i guess but like
the whole exaltation is
based on him
and "This is the Aspect of The Unconquered Sun's Archery Prowess!" doesn't really inform anything
this is not me shitting on you or anything, an' i hope it doesn't come across as that
also do you mean like
I don't think that'd help Philly tbh
in universe archetypes or ore genreal ones?
Needs stronger magic
All ruined by one Eagles game
well, here's the problem. what in-universe archetypes or past solar heroes are really available to draw on
but also
out-of-universe ones might not fit amazingly well?
The Mosiac Reality Has Fractured
Go Birds
I think I might make Void Seer a sorcerous initiation instead of a charmset.
makes sense, iki
My Power of Vacuum created a massive 6-hour aurora over the whole Eastern seaboard
Shenanigans were involved
I think out of universe ones can fit well enough, considering that Exalted, of course, is not a vacuum and is built up on previous fictions
misc suggested Hou Yi for archery once
sun boy does have his four artifacts themed after the four virtues, so you could just split the trees four ways vibes-wise and then steal whatever other gimmicks you want and file the serial numbers off
Conan could actually work as an example of... well, quite a few attributes
The Grey Mouser woudl be an excellent inspiration for larceny solars I feel like
Hm, okay, what about gods in proximity to the UCS
Five Days Darkness, uhhhh
Doesn’t he have a charioteer?
Sorcerous Initiation: Void Seer
To become a void seer is to attempt to hold the entirety of creation within one’s mind. Much like attempting to force an entire ocean into a bottle, the container will shatter. But from those shards of sanity grow an intuitive wisdom, an ability to reach out and pull the strings of reality together into shapes designed long ago but unseen by any other. The most common Void Seers are those of the Mountain Folk, the entirety of the loom of fate spinning within minds no longer able to handle it. However, some mortals have achieved a similar blind idiot godhood through deadly amounts of intoxicants, the madness of the wyld of becoming the victim of spells that unravel time itself.
This read okay?
pretty sure the whole "what is the daystar" thing is left intentionally vague in 3e
the Charioteer of the Daystar is one of the major gods written up in Sidbook
oh word?
the Daystar remains unspecified
Yeah, the 'is it actually a spaceship' part went unspecified.
wheremst
page 40
Is the Moon in Exalted Luna or something else?
Luna is the goddess of the moon but she is probably not the actual moon itself, maybe
much like how the UCS is probably not the actual sun, probably
said charioteer of the daystar is now in charge of making sure Creation's Sun continues on its proper path
so he's definitely not unless she is wheeling him around in a chair at the Games of Divinity
Maybe the chariot is a complicated set of mirrors that reflects the Unconqurered Sun into creation to make the daystar
I like Misc’s idea of aligning them to his virtues, as well
luna they/them nowadays, boss
well i was already bringin’ in the virtues
but like
gotta have somethin’ more ya know
I was under the impression luna's pronouns changed regularly (with the phases of the moon even) so I tend to use whatever hits my keys first for them
to inform how those virtues come through
god damnit fingers stop putting that r there
I had fun with that. I wanted something with a bit more bite than just 'You're CRAAAZZZYYY AND THEREFORE EVIL', as that's a bit Ooof as someone neurodivergent myself and also just not interesting
maybe i should just make a fucken survey for each tree
Solar stuff should be fairly straightforward, I don't think you really need to imitate specific guys
that might be easier
for each ability
abyssal trees are like deathlords and infernal trees are presumably like yozi, but that is for very specific reasons
Just making some shit up in the fashion of Sid constellations to give some minor identity could be fine
yes but if it’s too straightforward it becomes a bit boring, and boring is what i’m tryin’ to fix
and also The Balance
but that’s a joint effort
Maybe like, phrased as Gods The UCS Taught/Effected
i’m not saying it has to be Crazy Yozi/Deathlord-esque Horseshit
“Things the UCS taught the god of swords” or something
I’m very tired and spitballing
Deebs get by fine with five different vibes for charms and Lunars have basically-one, so surely four for the virtues and then the spear/shield/cornucopia/whatever the last one is should be fine
spitballing still useful
okay the core book still uses she/her for luna, let me open up lunars... lunars uses they/them mostly it looks like but also refers to luna as a goddess...
at the very least, a lot of the basic charms are going to be "basically what they are now but with less broken shit" because they're the baseline effects for the whole game
so I think you're fine with the sun's panoply and maybe a little bit of caste-themed stuff
Luna is genderfluid but usually feminine
yes, that much i’ve asserted with backporting the abyssal charms that are just number boosters
Okay so if it’s the four artifacts
We have 25 abilities
Maybe Brawl is none of the four Because Reasons or some shit
Maybe rather than in-universe people, have them inspired by mythological characters? Like Solar Athletics could be Hercules inspired with a 'do massive amounts of physical labor' stuff in there alongside the moving places.
Does Luna have a writeup in sidereals? probably can't hurt to check...
I don’t think so
Hercules, Achilles, Kongming, Goku
probably lines up most easily if you do five categories, one for each virtue and then Neutral
i’ve been looking more to the Crucible of Legend Virtues
admittedly
but i suppose we can cleave more firmly to The Old Four
5 times 5 is an old school Exalted vibe
bonus numerology points if you do five abilities with minor vibes of each Caste and then within each caste have one of each virtue and one neutral
the four virtues are actually still mechanised for exactly one splat - each Sid Essence Replenishment charm is themed around one
because they always used to love their virtue channels
okay luna doesn't have a writeup in sidereals, I checked
so core is she/her, lunars is they/them but also refers to luna as a goddess and specifies that luna appears as any mix of or absense of genders as is necessary
so now they have Heroic/Slick/Stern/Compassionate Essence Replenishment
I would usually just change up whatever gender I used to refer to luna at any given time because I thought that was appropriate and it amused me/is similar to my own experience of gender but if it seems to be disrespectful I can stop?
it’s fine if you’re mixing it up, i’m just used to some people like
My hot take is put Melee and/or Archery in Temperance
Not Doing That
which apparently used to stack until a playtester showed up with a Sid that had three of the damn things and as such could squeeze functionally infinite motes out of Black Claw
I also think you should make charms based solely on shit people did in romance of the 3 kingdoms
lol
I think Archery gets Temperance
because Sid Melee is Temperance and I like changing it up
<- knows nothing abt RotTK
Zhang Fei scared dudes so hard one died
ID, stop panicking. That's fine.
Isn’t Temperance related to the shield, though?
Shield feels like it should be melee
and? he has a shield, a spear and no ranged weapons
this is going to look cluttered either way
apologies
Spears are ranged >_>
I would go Brawl -> Valour, Archery -> Temperance, Melee -> Conviction, Thrown -> Compassion personally
I'll let people get back to the conversation at hand, lol
I would not give Thrown to compassion
Also yes, Luna explicitly has a changing and even subjective gender presentation
Otherwise that makes sense
Gaia and Sol and the Maidens all have set genders though
I suppose you could shunt Compassion over to War and then leave Thrown neutral
but I'm going purely on vibes here
Melee Conviction good, yes
Compassion being War is pretty powerful
hmm yeah
Like thematically
it’s an interesting statement
I like that
I wish to make my troops invincible so I will never feel the pain of loss
bureaucracy valor
you need the valor to dare all this paperwork
Bureaucracy should be one of the Solar trees most focused around me-me-me-I-am-the-godking-here, so Valour works
that was my thoughts exactly lol
Solaroid bureaucracy being hard focused on creating incredibly overpowered orgs with a bus factor of like 0.2 is something I very much like about it
what's a bus factor?
maximum number of people in your group who can be hit by a bus before everything breaks due to lack of core competencies
also, if I may make a suggestion: Id on't feel like Medicine should be Compassion if we're linking solar charms to the four virtues.
... that's amazing, misc
normally it doesn't go below 1 but somewhere, an Abyssal has had a bucket of water thrown over them by a water immaculate, which uncommitted their 25 motes spent on Iron Tyrant Reign
oh?
i’m listenin’
Not everything should play against type
as someone who works in medicine, while compassion is... like, it's a major part of why people go into medicine, but compassion is not nearly enough to stay in this job
if all I had going for me was compassion, i would have quit long ago. Long hours, lack of appreciation, watching people wither and die quickly or slowly? You actually have to be a little hardened to stick in the job.
I could see Medicine as Valor
Valor or conviction would be my calls for it
I'd lean conviction, but that's likely due to personal experience; Valor implies a level of heroism I do not personally feel. I'm not brave, I'm just doing my job.
yeah im feeling conviction more too
I’m not sure grim necessity fits the way the UCS would engage with medicine
it's not even, like, grim necessity here. It's just at the end of the day I got into this job to help people, but if I wasn't able to harden myself against some of the suffering I see every day I work, I wouldn't still be able to help people, if that makes sense?
I would go Conviction
i don’t think grim necessity was the implication
I feel like anything the UCS does, all the virutes owuld play into it, but there is one that wins out
compassion gets you into medicine, conviction keeps you there
hang on, how did they previously split all the abilities by caste before they fixed the Dawn problem
I just want to see if we can play sudoku here
huh
yeah, I know, I just need to check which ones were which
because it would appeal to me on a pointlessly petty aesthetic level if we could get one of each virtue and one neutral into each caste
hang on I'll write it out
Presence Performance Resistance Survival Integrity for Zenith
Lore Occult Craft Investigation Medicine for Twilight
Athletics Awareness Dodge Stealth Larceny for Night
Yes but I was doing them from memory :P
DAWN:
Archery (Temperance)
Brawl/MA (Valour)
Melee (Conviction)
Thrown (Neutral)
War (Compassion)
ZENITH:
Presence (Valour)
Performance (Temperance)
Resistance (Conviction)
Survival (Compassion)
Integrity (Neutral)
TWILIGHT:
Lore (Neutral)
Occult (Temperance)
Craft (Valour)
Investigation (Compassion)
Medicine (Conviction)
NIGHT:
Athletics (Conviction)
Awareness (Compassion)
Dodge (Neutral)
Larceny (Temperance)
Stealth (Valour)
ECLIPSE:
Bureaucracy (Valour)
Linguistics (Temperance)
Ride (Compassion)
Sail (Conviction)
Socialize (Neutral)
if this produces strange assignments I will throw this scheme away immediately but I do want to see if I could figure it out
Ride Compassion, Sail Conviction, Linguistics Temperance, Socialize neutral?
That tracks
zenith is a hard one because they're basically the Conviction Caste
resistance obvs Conviction
Survival compassion, for the beastmaster stuff?
and I'd put Presence as an obvious Valour
see
my opinion on Integrity is that it's either Neutral or a mix of all of em because well
I like compassion survival
I would have Integrity Neutral
Because it's about your little guy
it's your ability to stand strong against things that would change you
doesn't matter what your integritying
i'll probably have some virtue-themed charms within the integrity tree tbh
I'm just going to assign my best guess at vibes and then people can argue with me
Conviction Sail: “...to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.”
Real actually
I think Sail is an easy Conviction yeah
proposal for a second counterintuitive one
Larceny Temperance
Hold your ship together will sheer willpower. Lasts until you leave the boat, so if it's still destroyed it will fall apart at the end of the journey.
OK, stuck on Nights
What's your current thoughts?
larceny temperance, because it's funny
Stealth for Valor
Stealth places you in immediate danger against great odds
Compassion Awareness: Awareness is used not just for spotting ambushes but spotting oportunities to intervene/things in need.
weirdly i like athletics temperance
compassion awareness is a good one
I like Athletics Conviction for like … powering through
yeah, I'd go with athletics Conviction
especially with the classic solar inspirations
Pushing oneself beyond
samson etc.
I would like to go Larceny Temperance Dodge Neutral just for the fun idea of temperance-themed theft
just enough (that they don't notice)
we're assigning 2e virtues to 2e ability spreads, what is this, 2012?
Unironically: A big part of being good at stealing shit is knowing when to stop taking, so you don't get caught.
Idiots get greedy, go too far and lose everything.
and that leaves Dodge as neutral
which seems fair
Solar Larceny also has a bit of gambling in there
so Temperance fits
Larceny is also often social in scope
Idiots also forget if they've silenced their pistol on day three of a long heist... :P
It’s not just pocket-picking
was someone playing Payday
in iki's defense it was like 4 AM for him at the time and we'd been playing for like eight hours at that point or something stupid, in our yougner days when such things were normalized
I think it took me something like three real-life days to beat Framing Frame DSOD, I sympathise
man Payday was fun, I could go for some Payday 2 one of these days
I did that once
XD
and you'll never live it down
mostlyb ecause it's hilarious
(hot take payday gang is a great way to handle solar heistlords as a campaign concept)
That crossover they did where they put John Wick in Payday both worked perfectly and made the Payday universe make way more sense
why are there infinite respawning cops who can only hold you for thirty seconds? this is John Wick, there are always more goons and they're easily bribed
why are you invincible badasses with bulletproof suits? you have John Wick's tailor
why is money so fake that you will freely burn millions on a phone call? you pay for all the important stuff in continental doubloons
anyway, Exalted
Fuckin dubloons
where money is not fake but might as well be for some people, because Resources is funny
I am wondering how much of a murderer to make my Abyssal
Does it ruin the vibe if his atrocities are too Dire
I feel you're allowed to do a good amount of atrocity
you have a wide selection of charms for throngling people and turning them into toys
I mean yeah Waking Smiths thing is that he'll turn an entire village into a corpse tower but only if asked
Or told
And he'd probably not do the same if politely asked not to and given an alternative
my guy is a strange amoral trade baron but the only reason he's not condensing the populations of villages he conquers into thousand-corpse goliaths is becuase a) most of them are ghosts, who don't condense well due to not being meat and b) his allies in the form of Shark Lunar, Athens Lunar and Khan Lunar would be mad at him
being able to condense some villages would make his life much easier
necromancy is just really big on meat
Crimson also has so many downtime charms he practically needs a WoW rotation so it's not like he's running out of things to do
I am suddenly remembering the mole of moles from What If?
needs to bathe in blood for a shaping ritual, carve some effigies for another shaping ritual, summon merits with Shade-Summoning Conscription, craft his artifacts, run his auction and write charming letters to the mortal queen across the strait who doesn't like him very much, for funsies
thousand-corpse goliaths are a sometimes food
although if he had enough resources to spam them he absolutely would be building one a fortnight
I also have decided his Lunar mate spotted him in their chance meeting but he wasn't paying attention and didn't notice her
Resulting in her assured the immortal romance is resumed and him still not knowing what the Bond is
Because no one's told him
I'm putting these two in a cultivation romcom
come to Crimson Rain's cultivation auctions
a guy on the Exalted discord even gave me a list of a couple of hundred Exalted magical ingredients and their functions so I can put together an authentic docket of stuff for protagonists to try to steal
the best part about playing loyalist abyssals is doing Real Villian Shit
hopefully the number of xianxia protags who are unreasonably rich and willing to give me a huge cut to get their Heaven-and-Earth Sapling outweighs the number who will just randomly explode a few dozen young masters to steal it
it's a decent place to ask questions
it's mostly chill, I've had no trouble there myself
I love that in Exalted I can play Mysterious Vizier or Guy Who Runs Cultivation Infrastructure and it actually has narrative weight
... jesus foetid earth miasma is mean
I always feel bad when someone in one of these stories has put together this giant edifice of commerce to generate wealth with which to produce a lineage of high quality sword perverts and it just casually gets deleted on the way past
I want to see a story about evil cultivator merchants, those sound fun
lol
luckily with Abyssals I can just play one
i need infernals like i need air
i need my freaks
i have my goths, but i need my rockstar princes of hell
I don't think I could actually do Infernal Crimson, he's too cold-blooded and his gimmick depends too much on exactly how the Underworld works
I should come up with an Infernal
i've got infernal harrow and infernal irilae in the works
vaguely
malfeas union man
well, yeah, but I read about that stuff in real life, I want to get weird with it
the Realm apparently has a stock market, I bet that gets pretty wild
"Ragara Tozad is guilty of insider trading and I am about to kick his fucking ass"
if it had a cool name I'd make an Exigent of the [name of stock market]
but I believe it's unspecified
gonna b real
Exigent of Invested Wealth
Loviatar was my main infernal and she was...all sorts of 'not doing well mentally'.
A particularly bright slave girl, who was taken in to be trained as a potential sorcerer for a noble house. She had one chance to earn a better life for herself, to pass the test of Fear (Back when 2e Sorcery forced your character to confront and overcome their greatest fear) and to become a Sorcerer and prove herself one of the best minds of her generation despite her background.
She entered the test of fear...and found herself being told that she'd failed it. That she was being sent back to the laborer slaves, likely sent to a mine. And then she...failed the test genuinely by being unable to stand up for herself against idea, to push back against her fear. She broke down, things went red and she awoke to find herself having smashed in the skull of the sorcerer trainer, the only person there that had ever treated her with respect and compassion, in blind fear and rage.
And then a demon came with an offer for her.
She played up being a big bassass mage and sorcerer, complete with Too Many Titles (Master of Nightmares, Keeper of Celestial Flame, Sorcerer, Witch Queen, Chaos Incarnate) to hide the fact that she knows the time she'd had a chance to actually become one, she'd fucked it up.
if someone brought exigent of the stock market to my table
you work like Kiryu in Yakuza 0
i'd leap over it to strangle em
adding [resources] non-charm parry to block that
I love this idea
but you know that somewhere Ragara Banana is becoming a rogue trader on a scale never before seen and developing a spectacular dreamstone habit to cope with the stress
I want to see this exigent
on the run through the Imperial City, he is hunted down by the tremendously capable detective Sesus Amogus
Exigent Of That Specific Guy's Cocaine Addiction
(the fact that both of those are valid Dynast names is one of the most important things I took from the Exalted discord)
your numbers are fucken fake
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10xcIxHzHUrjSOh37l1d9eSp5OjYjZKRJ8qxGqvgluOo/edit?usp=sharing This is dangerously close to functional (The big thing that still needs to get done is Caste Abilities). It's a quick and dirty hack to avoid inventing a Whole New Charmset but it should work pretty well.
Enlightened Jadeborn Alchemical Exalt Variant The first of Autothon’s species, it was from the Jadeborn that humanity was crafted. When the Primordials rampaged, it was the Jadeborn who sheltered the first humans within their cities and taught them Autothon’s gift of creation. They saw their youn...
can't hear you through all this jade that I'm using to build dragon-line channels and power my giant manse with BANK written on the front
I activate Disheveled Knock-Off Accusation
Your Jordans Are Fake
Ragara Banana and his brother in the Scavenger Lands, Ragara Caravan
Freedom Lets Go, i no longer care about the authenticity of my Jordans
Ah, but you see, I have activated Drip Of Crystal Clearing that gives you the Major Intimacy "Be fresh as fuck"
Sid ability: Retroactively make my Jordans real
fucking sidereals
I would have to give this Exigent a pretty decent anima copying charm purely so that I could activate Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
I think there's some themes here, although I'd need to write up the exigent's god first because their personal vibes tend to put a twist on it
'+1 willpower to resist my social action if you're resources 2 or less'
Deaf Ear To The Broke Bitch
Money Speaking Technique
the obvious route is "hard-charging inspector and regulator" because that's what gods do anyway
but you also want a vein of charms where you just slam down All This Money
possibly scope for a fun mechanic where your rating in the resource merit is instead a kind of mana bar that you run down to use powerful effects and build up again as you go
fully money-is-fake, you don't even have Resources in the normal way
Your Bleak Expiation equivalent mentions Abyssals once, and the submodule for the countermagic initiation is on both of them, which might be unnecessary. Might also want to specify that their charms use the normal costs for Attribute Exalts by including the usual table, since just removing charm slots without changing the XP cost table means you have half price charms.
Whoops, yeah. I'll grab and replicate the Lunar Table as 'use this'
As the intent is that relative to Alchemicals they don't have the 'I can have like 2-3 loadouts' aspect.
And their Great Curse Equivelent is a lot meaner than the absolutely pillowfisted clarity
I'll also do up a couple of different submodules for the Celestial thing as I didn't mean that to be a copy-paste.
Oddly enough: In 2e they had 'can't do sorcery of any sort' then...their natural charmset replicated a couple of spells.
So I might give them a submodule for celestial that is 'You get Summon elemental, ignoring your usual restriction of not being able to cast spells'
As their 2e charmset gave them 'Summon Elemental: It's a Charm this time!'
Thanks for that btw.
What's people's thoughts on the Wings mutation? It looks fun but those are some pretty hefty penalties to 'doing something while flying' for something that pricy.
I think the penalty for doing something in the air is kind of ridiculous
The disguise penalty I get but given how restrictive the positives of wings are already, I'd at least want it reduced
Or ignored if stunted properly
I can see how they wanted it to not be 'hover in the air, firing arrows' but also: It's a very expensive mutation when you factor in you can't really use it for that purpose. XD
Yeah like
There's already several charms that make nearly-flying easy as pie
None of them come with "also you can't disguise yourself and can't do shit in the air"
I think my general thing is I'd remove the penalty and just go 'Look, any foe capable of using essense is going to be able to Stunt Their Way To You, so you can't play keepaway against other exalts super well'.
Yeah
For 4 dots you get the ability to buy into martial arts. It should be more useful than that
And sure, avoiding falling damage is nice but if that's all you can use it for, that's not 5 dots nice
Hmm...debating what to do with Jadeborn Martial Arts. Being pulled in a few directions:
A) Their 2e version couldn't get martial arts. At all. Not even terrestrial. That's...kinda boring.
2) Being Attribute-based, they really would like martial arts as an option as it mixes well with their charms.
iii) Their old charmset included elements of Prismatic Arrangement of Creation, a Sidereal Martial Art despite lacking any other martial arts.
Δ) This is a Variant Alchemical and they've already lost more than they've gained, I worry about this ending up 'well this looks like a miserable to play variant' if I take away martial arts, something Alchs really like.
I feel like the obvious direction is to just keep Martial Arts as they are for base Alchemicals. This is 3e, you can change lore stuff, that's fine
Yeah, I think that's my default unless I get some weird ideas that are fitting. Keep It Simple.
Could keep it to one martial art per martial art access charm whose name I forget?
Or maybe 2 with an enhancement?
that's still a nerf
In other things: As someone who's not played 3e DB, how do they gain aura? I'm somehow missing that.
when you hit bonfire your anima flux turns on
Oh, I mean the like 'if you're in Wood Aura' etc. Does that take bonfire?
ohhhh
Nah aura is this
Charms and/or anima powers of only one element during
her combat turn (or a similar narrative interval outside of
combat, such as an action in a scene of social influence or a
round of naval combat). At the end of her turn, she enters the
appropriate Aura.```
Ah, I see.
I'd say let them learn martial arts as alchemicals, but instead of the charm have 'em... do it like any other mortal in creation
slash exalt
Martial Artist Merit etc?
yeah
That could work.
Ironically: I cut one of the Alchemical charms despite the 2e jadeborn book listing doing it as an option XD
As I thought: 'Jadeborn can join together to form Captain Planet' was a bit silly and I wanted to leave 'Become Legendary Size' to actual alchemicals. XD
(Also: There is basicly no example of 'multiple characters join together into one' in RPGs that makes it fun for all players involved)
entirely fair
... do the abyssal charms that let you inflict diseases you've treated before work with the supernatural diseases from citrine poxes?
I'd lean 'yes' for the 'normal' ones, I think, but no for Iphimedeia Ithink?
since at least one of the diseases tied to the style does occur in nature, ife xtreme rarely
Seems legit
I'm also pondering the most fun apocalyptic for a full on 'Vampire Princess' style Abyssal. XD
and like, you still gotta experience the disease to add it to your repretoire
presense maybe?
I'm tempted by occult to get God-Scourging Wail for some real nonsense but there's a lot of options. XD
lol
Broken Heart Triumph is a very fun 'look what you can get way earlier than normal' though.
yeah
Occult Apocalyptic doesn't let you get magic earlier so maybe skip that and just pick up occult normally. XD
Hmm...2/3s of the Midnight Caste abilities feel really dull though.
Like, Wake From Death is 'Wow, making zombies. Have you seen the abyssal charmset? Or necromancy?'
Prophet of the Void is the only part of it that really sings.
Moonshadow has a bit more spice but doesn't have that 'Get a pile of non-charm dice to social stuff'
being fair midnight's zombie creation is extremely mote efficient
and teh ghost familiar thing is cool, I think?
I guess so and I guess Prophet of the Void carries a lot of the weight for it.
yeah
... I just realized a potential issue
is there anythingi n the abyssal charmset that lets them poison/disease ghosts
Are ghosts immune to supernatural disease/poison, or just mundane ones?
I don't think becoming a zombie stops you getting turned to stone etc
per the core rulebook
it doesn't say they're NOT immune to supernatural poison/disease
there's this which might work against them if 'works on creatures of darkness' overrides 'immunity to poison'
Dawnflower's poison mode should 100% work on undead.
The other two effects work on undead
Is there any rule about supernatural diseases specifically
Like under the disease rules
only this bit
and nothing about supernatural poisons
so it looks like my uh
bad touch abyssal build is probalby going to need to change, given the game's set in the underworld so 90% of what we're going to fight is going to beimmune to all my charm-bsaed poisons and diseases
... and I think my environmental effects, too
Is there any fluff about ghosts falling to plague
so
there’s at least one necromancy that creates a supernatural diseases that affects “spirits”
i’m gonna go check it again
just in case
Curse of Creeping Calcification sure affects spirits, which is tha umbrella term for all things what dematerialize and have funky soul setups
It looks like generally if a poison or disease does not specifically say it can effect spirits, it does not, atl east from my reads?
Well actually
Abyssals can suffer disease
And they're undead
So like
I do not think this is a hard rule and you should just go for it
Abyssal's state of death is 'yes, but also no' tbh
but the GM's ruling that ghosts are immune to poison and disease that doesn't explcilty say it effects spirits or creatures of darkess, so my bad touch build is... not gonna be very good for a game set in the underworld.
explicitly undead “only when it is beneficial” and they don’t get the usual benefits of being undead
alas
I would say being immune to disease is beneficial
“and they don’t get the usual benefits of being undead”
if something in like a charm says “this does not affect the undead”
an abyssal is counted as undead for that purpose
The Abyssal Exalted have not died, yet death is their very Essence. When faced with magic that has different effects for the living and the dead, Abyssals are considered whichever is most advantageous to them. However, they don’t gain the benefits of undeath listed on Exalted, p. 503.```
be weird to be immune to disease/poison and then have a resistance charm to make you better at resisting disease/poison
man abyssal larceny's capstones aren't that spicy are they.
death-cheating deception is... neat, I guess?
hmmm
temperance archery huh
held breath, restraint, patience and waiting for the perfect moment
could probably take some hinters from Sidereal melee's more straightforward stuff
the chair of the Sidereal Convention on Hell is explicitly designed to be "fuckboy Gojo", apparently
I don't know what that means, I have never seen JJK
but he's apparently a boss for a couple of fighty low essence infernals at once
Unsure if it is rude to fight the diplomatic delegation to hell or if it would be rude for the Sidereals to not get in fights on their diplomatic missions to hell
WAIT WHAT
I'm so excited
this is all we've currently got on him but he's getting a full QC in Agents of Heaven
If you want more Gojo vibes

This is like, one of his two quintessential fights
Local Sidereal fighting off Two 2nd Circle Demons using nothing but martial arts and excellencies.
OK, that is very siddie
I may have to take a look at this, I admit most of the martial arts stuff I watch is in the older live action mould
Judging by that description of an antagonist for them, I guess they're going all in on 'Infernals are plucky hell rebels vibe' for 3e.
I am hoping they keep the best fan interpretation of 2e infernals, which is that they're all trading favours with 3cds at the Althing, split between a billion different agendas and not united in the Glorious Reclamation because that was silly
we already have a Rebel Against Heaven splat and their Rebel Against Heaven stuff is the weakest part of their thematics, IMO
the Essence example Get is kinda fun and that's mostly because he told Rakan to go fuck himself and went back to doing stuff actually related to his Origin
My issue is that a lot of splats has some amount of 'rebel against heaven'. The Lunars are actively at war with the Sids, the Solars are coming back and being actively hunted by heaven's agents in the immaculate order. Abyssals...Abyssals.
'Rebelling against heaven' isn't really an interesting trick in exalted when most of the other splats are already doing it. XD
Well the Lunars are more at war with the Realm than Heaven
That and I feel like it's kinda a flattening of 2e Infernals into a more 'generally heroic' version with a lot less bite to it. Taking away all the self-destructive and grimy sides of their 'Infernal Rockstars' aspect.
I liked that the internal rockstars was not just 'Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll' but also how it burned the person up, playing into the self-destructive aspects of the Yozi.
I dunno, I'm not sure what 3e Infernals will be but I hope it's enough like 2e infernals to make it fit. As 2e Infernals were incredibly flawed but also had some incredible aspects that I worry will get stripped out or flattened down into nothing but a patina.
I've heard it said that steppe archers shooting at a full gallop learn to fire not only at the apex of their breath, but also in the instant their horse has all of its hooves off of the ground, so nothing can jar their shot
I liked this bit. I liked this bit a lot.
It's just that it was packaged with...You know...
All of that stuff
<gestures vaguely
i'm pretty sure they're still doing some Rockstar Prince of Hell type shit, it's just also mixed in with some new flavors
i also think, given how abyssals turned out, we gotta just be patient and not worry about it, y'know
I'd be really surprised if after 4 books of bangers they'd just suddenly start sucking
the impression I've gotten from lurking in here is that ppl are worried because of how Essence depicted them, but like. abyssals fucking rule and so did sids before them. so I think it's gonna be alright
keeping it real, we can't be relying on Essence for the most part because those are two separate teams/projects/goals
whole-ass different game
I haven't looked at alchs but the impression I've gotten is that people fw them heavy as well so my original point stands
alchs is pretty good
did some fun stuff with em
their charm setups are real fun too
yeah this is also a good point. given what I've seen of the deathlords for 3e compared to 2e I think infernals will be alright. team working on 3e's splats is doing a good job
I really need to grab the Aybssals book like as soon as it becomes printable
I am a physical media snob
It's kinda interesting that some of the 2e martial arts have turned up in Essence but have not been announced for the 'lets have a heap of martial arts' sid book.
again, different teams/projects/goals. also the trees are much smaller in essence, nor are they quite so meaty
there aren't individual splat supplements for Essence
just core book, pillars of creation, and the upcoming player guide (i think that's all of em)
Oh yeah, less 'why not turn up' and more 'interesting differences in what they want to see turn up'.
I'm kinda glad First Pulse hasn't been announced for the sid book after I spend several hours doing up my own 3e version of it. XD
Crazy lack of juice on a lot of it, yeah
there'll probably be a lot of other martial arts dropped with getimians
but that's
A While Away.
random aside but I might have a new favorite abyssal charm now
Gasping Sargasso Gallows has the juice
oh?
It seems like I'm pretty safe on most of hte ones I did. With the sid book having a Smoking Martial Art and a Drinking Martial art, I doubt they're updating Orgiastic Fugitive Style any time soon.
A bit too 'covering similar bases'

'so i heard you lke to drown ghosts'
Ooof
That's a beefy fucker.
...I wonder if it works on people who do need to breath but like...can breath water.
Like a Water DB
I'd rule yes, personally.
I think "I am immune to drowning" is specific enough to cancel out the "normally need to breath"
Broad loses to specific
because like, it's not just water. 'putrid brine and seaweed', y'know?
I'd likely go with 'look, whichever one of them is the player charater wins. Player characters get cool moments'. XD
a few of them got split up - Orgiastic Fugitive is now Devil-Pipe and Seven Drunken Gods
and there are a couple of criminal streetfighting styles which will presumably be the descendants of First Pulse
I'm still convinced that calling oneself "Master of the Devil Pipe" gets you on a list, but I adore martial arts in this game and I'm really looking forward to it.
Gets apparently has at least seven SMAs in it, so I would expect the actual book to be a little slimmer in other places
probably lore if anything, Sids have a whole dimension that needed fluff and zen-mu is a little less of a big deal
And I miss First Pulse style. I remember having my House Tepet nerd using it with a pair of God-kicking boots and making his peers very confused.
I would expect Roaring Iron Style and Prince-Eating Mendicant Style to have grabbed bits of it
There is something delightful about dragonblooded nerds just busting out absolutely brutal martial arts moves
Prince-Eating Mendicant is half peasant rebellion half Frenzied Flame
I had a water-aspected house nellens bureaucrat/merchant accountant who used a combination of terrestrial hero style, five dragon style, and first pulse to beat people to death with her ledger
admitteldy her ledger was also a brick of solid jade and an artifact, but, you know, not DESIGNED to kill people
Five Dragon Style certainly had the charm naming scheme of all time
peak
chaos, the world, take it, etc
Five-Dragon Claw, Five-Dragon-Force Blow, Five-Dragon Fortitude, Five-Dragon Blocking Technique, Five-Dragon Form, Five-Dragon Fist, Five-Dragon Invulnerability and Five-Dragon Wrath
that's the whole style
yep
I basically borrowed some stunt moves from Def Jam Fight for NY. 😛
It seemed appropriate.
Mine was more Yakuza, lol
also because this was 2e, the second charm costs 2 motes and doubles the damage of your attack
was still considered abysmal for most purposes
mmmmm ex2 combat
tastes like 'as long as you don't think about it, it almost manages to entirely fail to not work'
every time someome thinks about 2e combat, the five ghostly clones of Jon Chung wielding sledgehammers get one second closer to reawakening
some of the charms are pretty fun to read, though
looking at you, BOKL Style
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Hz0AYxSD7MulgBWoJVnQSBx1JxoXRgs5bbKM722_rcI/edit?usp=sharing I did a 3e version of it. A lot had to be tinkered with as some mechanics didn't really translate and 3e sorta scrapped the line between Terrestial and Celestial but I'm kinda proud of it.
First Pulse Style First Pulse, like many styles, draws from the world about it. Instead of the flow of rivers or the movement of animals however, it focuses on the power of civilization and worked stone. No matter how mighty the mountain or hostile the forest, civilization will make itself known...
It's still a dirty streetfighting style but I drew from Titan of the Streets and Introduction to the Stone Prince to make it more urban themed.
First Pulse Style
First Pulse, like many styles, draws from the world about it. Instead of the flow of rivers or the movement of animals however, it focuses on the power of civilization and worked stone. No matter how mighty the mountain or hostile the forest, civilization will make itself known in time. Mere mortals, armed with hammers and spikes, can carve their way through stones that the primordials themselves made and shape it in their own image.
Some claim that the original creator of this style was a slave pit fighter in Nexus, who drew inspiration from the shattered bones and splattered stains left upon the arenas that he fought within. Some Lunars claim that it was invented by one of the first Immaculates, a precursor to Earth Dragon that was discarded as the order sought to hide the brutality of their conquests in the illusions of protection and stability. Others among the stars theorize that its violence is divinely inspired and that this style is one of the reasons that even when the Bureaus of Heaven and Humanity comes to blows in their disputes, few are willing to challenge Wun Ja within Yu Shan’s walls.
First Pulse is violence without restraint; lashing out with driving fists, shattering knees with brutal stomps and gouging at eyes. Only a fool believes it is violence without thought, however. Its practitioners are masters at identifying the cracks in the bedrock upon which their opponents' styles stand, then hammering them like an architect’s wedge splitting apart a boulder to craft the bricks of a new street.
faffle
With Jadeborn having 2e charms that gave them rituals for for 'summon elementals' and 'summon demons' I kinda decided to go 'fuck it' and let them learn Ritual Spells but only ritual spells. They also don't get Control Spells or a free spell for initiating (You get your Excellent Countermagic instead).
what mechanics lend themselves to this? beyond improving aim and whatnot
Perhaps being able to move a zone before or after an attack? So you can nip into close range for better accuracy then move back out to medium?
Air Dragon gets a lot of use out of that sorta shoot and scoot
i realize now that i tagged the wrong message lol
meant to grab mine using gk’s as a steppin’ stone
shoot and scoot is nice but i’m just wondering if it leads itself to temperance and patience, restraining oneself and waiting for the perfect moment to loose an arrow/fire… blast
i am Open to thoughts
maybe it is perfectly on theme and i am Short Sighted in this regard
I would not make an entire tree about kiting, kiting is the exact thing that the game's movement system is designed to avoid
even Charcoal March doesn't let you move away from people without being attacked first
Yeah generally it wants you to be In The Scene
Isidorosposting
mighty is isidoros
Isidoros more like Is Adorable - Szorenzy Probably
I was going to put my Endings sid into PAOC but honestly I'm starting to feel the pull of Charcoal March
doing Sid Melee from the other side of the room is pretty hype
my crane stylist can deal with PAOC, it's more his type of thing
...how is Earth Scorpion perceived here?
who/what is that
Exalted fan who has been around a while. Had strong opinions on the game. Wrote fair amount of homebrew rules and setting material, has strong opinions on the setting, did not like the initial direction of 3e at all, and has been running a decade long campaign for a close friend.
Never heard of him.
never - yep
Fair enough.
Names vaguely familiar but I have no emotional attachment to it
His version of the setting, threw our the guilds, made it so the original Scarlet Empress is long dead (they were on their fourth and fifth when one went missing with no clear heir), underworld significantly reworked throwing out the canon deathlords almost entirely?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
eyeroll
Cool, he can sit with the rest of the custom setting fics out there.
Honestly, I don't think anyone here seems to really know about them. The only annoying homebrewer we have here is me 😛
Basically. Someone who I rather like because some of what he has done is cool and due to the weird way I engage with games historically I got steeped in older fandom discourse about two years ago
why are you annoying, iki
that was a poorly timed message on my part, damn
The 2E era is complicated, I think everybody agrees on that. ^^;;;
I don't think I've ever paid attention to fandom discourse in my life and I assume it's had a statistically measurable positive increase in my mental health, tbh
Probably
adds years on to your lifespan actually
Because I keep posting homebrew for things people don't care about (Jadeborn, homebrew martial arts etc) XD
Yeah but you're nice about it!
nah that shits rad
I love ur drunken martial arts
Mhmm interesting.
Anyway i would rather we don’t like, just drag random peoples work out like this
Howsabout them Dragon Kings i always love those dudes
they're fuckin badass, I barely know anything about em
Dino people or some shit right
With perfect reincarnation
wicked fuckin sick
The former favored people of the Unconquered Sun, to whom they offered the hearts of men in the days of eld…
My first 3e Solar character had a Dragon King mentor, I love those guys.
Dragon kings cool
Reason why I brought up ES is because I like his work a lot and due to my own shortcomings he became a major influence through which I viewed the setting. And in particular a crossover fanfic he did and the various demons he has written up are why I am obsessed with the Yozi
Dragon Kings are cool. They're something I'd really like to see make a return but they're also tricky. I managed a basic hack together for the Enlightened Jadeborn (Iki, doing Sidhe Stuff? This is entirely out of character for them!) but Dragon King are so different to anything else they'd be very 'make from scratch'. XD
Oh, that’s fine, i saw folks being snippy and may have jumped the gun there orz
peak mentioned
can this possibly be the first time i’ve ever met a zx advent enjoyer since the first time i played that fucken game back in like 2009
i’m going to the games channel, i need to nerd abt this
I like a lot of ES's writing, he had a fun take on Infernals, don't care for edition wars
Yeah thats really fair.
I overdosed on edition wars because my approach to learning more about exalted was reading 1000+ pages of discussion from the beginning
about the only thing I disliked about the old Kerisgame writeups was the fact they are Extremely 2e and as such most of the people who aren't Solaroids or third circle demons Do Not Matter mechanically
some really fun vibes in there though
oh god did you binge the SV thread
vietnam flashbacks right there
ten page argument about whether Solar charms can break a one-time pad
fear
Yes. Saddly I never finished it. Refused to keep reading unless I read inks game. And each chapter of inks game was wordy enough I never got around to it
never looked at that one
the SV thread had a very particular take on the underworld, yu-shan and lunars that was basically designed to remove the fact they had terrible lore but were still vaguely necessary to think about, and now I find I can happily discard all that and use the actually good fluff in the new books
nodnod
I like some of the ideas for the underworld Earthscorpion has but the new lore sounds super exciting
on the other hand, there were tons of very fun demon writeups and I love the general consensus on the Infernals being batted between scores of third circles with their own agendas that emerged there at the same time
new deathlords rock
don't think there's a dud in there
having a great time with my Moonshadow in Skullstone
Are ludicrously dangerous solar hungry ghosts canon or is that something brainstormed by sufficient velocity?
(also the fandom brainworms about Sidereals were something else, just entirely informed by Sidereal Death Squad memes and random broken mechanics from 2004)
those are real, albeit less heavily emphasised
and they'll form from any elder exalt that kicks it, not just sun boys
also probably wouldn't be Essence 10 anymore because the essence scale for plausible entities you punch goes about 1-7 rather than the old 4-10
I rather like the enlightenment hack kerisgame uses
it was cute for the time, but now an Essence 5 Solar is not capable of ignoring an arbitrary number of Essence 5 deebs so I'm again happy to put that aside
there's a power gap but it's not represented by "you shall never reach the realm of actually relevant abilities"
hell, E5 Sid martial artist or Lunar Full Moon vs E5 Solar martial artist is close to a dead heat, possible slight advantage Siddie but definitely down to build and piloting
what Enlightenment remains good at is representing the fact that ghost/god/fae/etc. Essence was and is not remotely on the same scale as Exalt Essence, and that's just not a very big deal
what, like, recently?
blast from the past
yozis are fun, we have effectively zero detailed material on any of the canon ones in 3e
Sids now have a charm that invokes a subclause of the Surrender Oaths to summon a chunk of Adorjan, which is kind of neat
there is an attached warning that if you do this too much Adorjan might develop a crush on the summoner and that rarely ends well
Warning: She might fall in love with you. This is bad, as you know.
Yeah. Basically have like. Main themes and a list of the basic ideas of about ten to twelves souls.
Design process consisted of going, "I am currently obsessed with yozi... I want to make one to feel smart. None of the canon yozi are full on ice and snow themed... Hmm, if I pour my own insecurities, habits, and neuroses into this it actually works!"
that sounds like most of the canon yozi, yeah
How so?
Adorjan the Silent Wind is partially defined by her succession of literal whirlwind romances, and she is a sandstorm that snuffs out all sound and breath
She's not an acidic sea?
if she takes a fancy to you you will be flayed alive in the span of a few seconds as she takes you in her loving embrace
adorjan feels intensely and feels swiftly
and if you feel her, you’ll die swiftly
at which point she will hit Freedom Lets Go and go not-whistling off into the not-sunset without a care
you’re thinking of Kimbery, I believe?
misc, am i right on that
Was confused cause I kept seeing stuff like acidic sea, primordial river, when I googled Adorjan for Exalted.
Kimbery is the Sea That Marched Against The Flame, yes
ah, there's a reason for that
Adorjan was originally Adrian, the River of All Torments, who encircled Creation and shredded trillions of invading Raksha with a soggier version of her current gimmick
in the Divine Revolution the Exalts killed Adrian's defining soul and the resulting psyche rearrangement produced Adorjan, who is a lot less damp and a lot less attached to.... well, anything
adorjan my love
I'm curious, where is the info that exists about Szoreny and Isidoros? I keep hearing bits and pieces of their lore but I haven't found any big rundowns on them.
there was actually very little, a lot of the discussion is a series of extrapolations from a couple of paragraphs in Infernals 2e and Games of Divinity
Isidoros in particular is just fun enough to get people posting about him a lot
everyone loves Very Big Pig
That's the general vibe I got, like Isidoros x Szoreny are the One True Ship among the yozi fanbase.
Isidoros ismy favorite Yozi. I'm a sucker for black holes and black hole boar is just a fun concept. There's a reason he's the Yozi I did a Martial Art based on. XD
My favorite is probably SHLIHN, but I think that's mostly off the power move that is the Three Spheres Cataclysm.
Ligier I have sold myself as my favorite
if only because in my head he's just Exalted Sukuna
ebon dragon my love
we can let him out of hell for a bit, it’s fine
we can bend the surrender oaths just for a day, it’ll be fiiiiiiiine
literally what is even the worst that could happen
I find it funny that so far I don't think Ebon Dragon is canon to 3e?
Wait do Sidereals draw some of their abilities from the Yozis? I thought that was Infernals?
Some of them
The Sidereals get their powers from some beurucratic leverage
including with demons
? why would he not be
iconic yozi
I don't think Ebby has been mentioned yet but most of the Yozis haven't, it's only been the ones relevant outside Malfeas which is not tons
some of his sub-souls are around because we have stats for Mara, though
...
Ooh
My homebrew yozi would probably actually destroy creation if she was released
but we only have significant mention of Malfeas and Cecelyne because they're important terrain features, Sacharavell and Oramus because they're the progenitors of the Getimians and Adorjan because she made a deal with Saturn and as such is part of the Sid charmset
i think ebon dragon has been mentioned a few times- yeah
he's probably been out of focus for various 2e related crimes as i understand them, but how i imagine him is more as the concept of Not That, and through being the antithesis of everything else, he is defined by everything he is not and holds no real opinions or free will of his own. he knows this and is deeply insecure over it. thats my spin/understanding at least
as far as I know it's literally just that charm, although the House of Endings has a few things with vaguely Adorjan vibes but no explicit link
Sid Integrity has a duty-flavoured version of Freedom Lets Go, Sid Athletics is The Rising Smoke, etc.
really good terrain hazard charm actually
costs a lot but since 3e generally limits freeform movement to 1 range band/round without fairly powerful charms you can usually get two rounds of pain out of it on any one target
also being aggravated damage, it's going to stick
only diff 4, but it is the blood ape blender 5000
-Fetich who is deeply concerned with keeping her fellow souls in line and dreams of somehow severing her link with her greater self.
-A twin of the fetich who wants to kill Joklua (the yozi) greater self
-A soul who pushes others away through bitter storms
-a soul who will lash out emotionally pushing them into self loathing
-a soul who is greatly concerned with masking the pain of her greater self (and coating her greater self with snow to hide the unsightly rotten ice that makes up much of Joklua's form)
...I wonder if that 'become super resistant to an element' presence charm would protect vs the vortex if you pacted with Air.
certainly if you had Air and Earth resistance up I'd be inclined to give you something against the mega sandstorm
...I wonder if Sids can pact with non-traditional elements. Like if a Sid ends up in Autobot City, can they pact with Smoke or Lightning?
I see no reason why not, it's in the same line as the do-stuff-with-Elementals charms and I think there are elementals for the autobot ones, right?
I feel that you should be allowed to take a deep lungful of the fumes around Xexas, blow a smoke ring and then swandive beautifully off the side of your airship as it fails to touch your skin
Yeah, the Autothonian elements are Steam, Metal, Lightning, Oil, Smoke and Crystal.
I seem to recall something odd like the oil sump being at the top and smoke being at the bottom but that could be half-remembered 2e
I have not scoured the 3e book carefully like I have with Sids/Deebs/Abyssals
-A soul who indulges in the pleasures of the flesh and pushes the creeping expansion of joklua
-a soul that loathes conflict and imprisons those who disturb their peace in a prison of ice
-a soul obsessed with collection whose ice gardens hold wonders of a previous age in suspension
-a failed creative soul whose unfinished artworks are innunerable
-a frostbitten soul who desperately yearns for the warmth of others even as she herself destroys those she touces
Generally the alignment is like:
Steam = Air
Metal = Eath
Lightning = Fire
Oil = Water
Crystal = Wood
Smoke = Autobot's Corruption.
For what's 'closest to existing element'
I will say that Autocthonia is steadily charming me more and more
I kind of want to go to robotland
oooh, there are definitely some fun charms to be made from a yozi with souls like this
Smoke likely links most closely to Vitriol. Being an Element of transformative corruption.
the Vitriol Elementals are admittedly kind of fake elementals
because they're just a local brand of 1CD
but yeah, fits stylistically
Would be kinda cool to see those rare Autothonian Dragonblooded take on aspects closer to the Autothonian elements.
No mechanical changes but an Autothonian Fire DB surrounded by Crackling Lightning instead of flames etc could be fun.
autochthonia is a fun place
one touch i like is the center where the godhead is being incredibly cold. because its a supercomputer. it needs to be cold.
also update on Sid Play Experience: man these mote efficiency charms are fun
Delicious Resources
I've got WSAV and Heroic Essence Replenishment applicable for the first time in this campaign and I'm just slapping this battlegroup around with full excellencies that average like 2 motes
clashing every round to negate their attack because they can't go this hard
I can't just freely do this to exalts or big BGs of elites because I can't reliably overmatch their dice pools or their join battle, but it is quite a good tactic for things like Fae Cataphracts who have no excellencies for their dice pools but tons of damage and soak
Defining Soul of the Stinging Springs.
Really tall demonic oak tree man split down the middle and bound together with bands of iron. Is good at history, entomology, copying texts, and being really big and enduring. Is surprisingly stealthy, especially in the East. Can reach some spells from the first circle of Necromancy.
Negative attitude. Avoids offering their own opinions unprompted. Doesn't like moving around too much. Spreads mutant strains of wasp. When summoned arrives at a portion of his full size, needs time to grow into his own, and needs a fair amount of maintenance especially in the South.```
To be fair, Fae Cataphracts make up for 'no excellency' with 'what the fuck is this base dicepool?'
yeah, they can be very spooky, they just get hard countered by Sid Melee clash setups in particular because you don't need to spend that much every round to keep them reliably suppressed once you have an init lead
or really any clash sid, melee has expensive clash boosters but you really just need to be constantly holding down the cheap excellency button
Sid vs Fae fight - Whichever sides stops bullshitting first loses.
cataphract statblock is mostly just a high-stats beatstick with an integrated battlegroup of lads, so default cata probably can't
but yeah, fae in general have some shenanigans
Sid vs Fae fight is Jojo past part 6
The concern with the Fae Cataphract is that the Cataphract is like...he's not a minor fae but he's also a fae who's minor enough to have non-named versions you can put places. He's the 'Oh fuck, it's an Immaculate Shikari' of the Fae. A scary fucker but a scary fucker that's still a Broad Category of dude. We've not really seen the Sad Ivory, let alone Anys Syn of Fae statted yet. XD
we do actually have a selection of larger fae
no top-tier fae nobles but there are some named ones and a couple of behemoths
Oh right, we've got that Living Whirlwind Lightning Storm Rock Thing.
the wyld bird flocks that divide in two when you stab them are royal pains
very possible for a party to just have nothing to do against an enemy that can't be stabbed and can't be socially influenced
Would you ever fight one of the top-tier Big Honking Head Honcho Fae in modern Exalted, anyway?
yeah sure, they're around, unless you're talking Ishvara
Big Fae Prince is a fairly standard NPC to need to talk to or hit with whacky sticks
I'll admit, I'd be very tempted if I wrote up a statline for a top-tier Fae is to make their non-combat dice pool listing 'Almost Everything 14 dice, Empathy 2 dice'. Rather than listing the things they're good at, you list more the things they're bad at and just assume that a big fae is Good At Most Things because they're Lugh'ing it up. XD
the Ishvara are 2e-only fae incarnae-equivalents who are invariably Essence 10 and existed to get styled on in fluff by Conky or Luna, don't think they're coming back
I'm not sure we'll see a Balor-Tier Fae statted any time soon as that would require pushing the system further than I think the devs are comfortable stress testing it.
As well...see what Misc just said.
the Balorian Crusade as a distinct event has had a lot of the specifics filed off since it turned into a bit of an oddity
Giant Fae Invasion happened after the Great Contagion, but not due to this one dude with a particularly big mythos
as i understand it, the wyld being a place where nothing Is, a Large Guy can just show up occasionally (?)
pretty much, yeah
wyld is like subnautica
lots of shallows around with fairly normal rockpool creatures that can still give you a nip
can go sailing near the coasts
Yeah, the Balor-tier were what I was thinking of.
Oh right, this has reminded me (Due to my Lugh comment) I was going to do a thing to help make Jadeborn Better Crafters without just being a Big Numbers thing.
a long way out you have endless depths where human concepts start breaking down, and those are mostly empty but occasionally shaken by dreadful whalesong
exalts are occasionally called upon whenever a big thing from the depths washes up on the proverbial beach
the Fae are also not what they once were - Creation greatly lessened them, part of making creation and stabbing Mount Meru into the centre of everything as the Omphalos was permanently imposing One True Reference Frame on existence
there are few wyld-things left from those ancient days, and they are usually bitter, spiteful and too ruined by the un-Faelike curse of linear time to come to Creation's borders
yeah, now that there Is, there's now an Isn't where previously is Was, being neither Isn't as an Isn't implies an Is, and Isn't is in the shadow of what Is.
so the fae are pissed about this thing that's there now providing a reference frame outside their window
this is one of the reasons that Exalts all come with Fuck-The-Wyld magic built in - as creatures of either Creation or one of the adjacent dimensions with its own mythos (Underworld has Setesh, Malfeas has Yozis) they can basically show up at the Wyld game of pretend and go "no, actually, this is a real sword, you actually die when I stab you with it"

Jadeborn are the children of Autocthon and share his genius in crafting, able to apply their skills to any task put before them.
Jadeborn do not buy Areas of Expertise for Craft skills as seperate abilities. Instead, a Jadeborn purchases them as Specialities for the Craft ability. A Jadeborn may use their full Craft Ability for any usage of craft they have a speciality for. All Jadeborn start with Craft Specialities in Stoneworking and Geomancy, in addition to any others.
What I'm giving Jadeborn on the craft front. They're still not crapping out First Age Artifacts like a Solar but it's very easy for a Jadeborn to be Several Sorts of Mundane Crafter cheaply/Getting to the starting line of 'can make an artifact' is cheaper for them.
most "modern" fae that you'll actually see have adapted to Creation - they like hanging out just about close enough to creation to leech some shape from it, which is why you get semi-consistent forms like hobgoblins and cockatrices rather than random incoherent concepts hanging out in the local middlemarches
the wyld-stuff further out has less and less shape and (as a rule) less and less desire to come in and get any
have you considered making the bits of this that aren't the starting specs a charm? almost every exalt has a Get More Craft Dots charm, and the Alch one is rendered basically nonfunctional by the removal of charm slots
so you may as well pull that out and replace it with the much stronger "craft is now specs" to keep the usual costs roughly balanced
That's fair. I might ponder that.
still a significant upgrade over literally every other exalt's Extra Dots charm, but having played both with and without this houserule it would feel really bad to be the craft splat who didn't have this if your teammate got it for free
standard extra dots is basically "pay 8xp for Craft (Artifacts) 5 rather than 19xp" , whereas this is "pay 8xp for Craft (Stoneworking, Geomancy) 5 and then get all future crafts for 3xp"
also the only applicable mundane craft for Geomancy is Architecture due to a random sidebar in core about building manses
so you might want to lead with that instead of stoneworking
That's fair. I'll amend it to a charm. The intent is to make them feel like Quite Good Crafters even if they can't hit the 'fucking hell, just shitting out 5 dot artifacts everywhere' of a Solar. XD
I would put existing alchs as third in crafting power after Solars (in first place due to having OP jank as well as useless jank, so if optimised go nuts and if not optimised are really sad) and Abyssals
could argue for Alchs being joint third with Sids, but Sid craft is interested in such completely different stuff that I think they're more Does Not Compute
Yeah. I love Sid Craft but it's a weird one
Half of Sid Crafting has nothing to do with Crafting
As it's the only one not interested in playing Daiklaive Clicker
It's baller
I'm not sure if my plan to just raw excellency all my craft projects with like one dedicated crafting charm will actually let Rival make 3-dots in reasonable campaign time but it will be really funny if it does
hi everyone im gently microwaving bloody hand. I love her so much
if not, Sids can get a pretty decent artifact suite with maybe 3-5 charms and then fill the rest with delicious tech
Del I sold myself on Abyssals
oh yeah, Rival has obtained Ascending Destiny Mien because it lets him dump two different abilities even if his Int is bad
he's starting out as kind of a nerd, ngl
local silversmith and would-have-been househusband exalts as Sid, prior incarnation's legacy starts carefully shaping him into the finest-edged weapon in Creation
You cooked girl BH rules
Yaaaaay
She’s a contrary little fucking villain I love her
Beautiful girlprince with a disorder
She's going to be a beautiful disaster

The original Jadeborn were the children of Autocthon in all ways. They could paint as well as they smithed, shaping poetry and stone equally well. Since their shattering they are greatly diminished but that nature still shines through.
Upon purchasing this Charm, the Jadeborn compresses all her Craft abilities into a single ability equal to her highest craft skill and gains a Craft Speciality of her choice. She may use her full Craft Ability on any action she has a relevant craft specialty in.

Will ponder here, no current ideas.
Adapted into a charm so it's not quite so cheap. Still very cheap if you want Many Crafts but even dedicated crafters don't generally need more than like 3 crafts so I'm not super concerned about 'And here I get my 12th craft skill'. XD
Equally Skilled In Many Arts is one of the titles of Lugh, one of the Tuatha De Dannan. Playing a bit into 'Jadeborn were Fae' + Autocthon with the naming.
I would suggest wording along the lines of "refunds the XP cost of all dots in craft abilities past her first, if any" in there somewhere but yeah, this works
don't worry she knows if she fucks up everything it won't matter
because it all ends, right. so no one is allowed to be mad at her. because the world has to end.
That's right
...pondering shinies for Caste Anima Abilities and theming them on gear. A Celestial can get +(Essence or 3) to All Social Actions (As noted by the Daybreak/Midnight Caste).
I'm pondering like 'When you make use of an Exceptional Tool, the bonus is +(Essence or 3)' instead of 1. So you get 1 less bonus dice than a Daybreak/Midnight would if they had an Exceptional Tool (As they'd get the +1 and the +Essence) but it's wider in the number of things you can apply it to.
My thoughts is like:
-Workers get a Protective Gear Bonus
-Soldiers get a Weapon Bonus
-Artisans get an Exceptional Tool Non-Combat Bonus
Alternatively I could play into Artisans as the Leaders of the Jadeborn and give them an Ally Buff Bonus.
Give soldiers a protect other bonus too :3c
That could be fun, yeah. As I'm leaning against just like 'Hit harder'. As it's more about 'we have the bullshit skill of fey + a tendency towards defensive action'
I was pondering making the weapon bonus 'Hey look, some Bonus Parry' and some other shinies.
The intent is that none of these castes are offensive powerhoues.
They've all got defensive tools.
As an aside: The Void Seer Jadeborn art is very funny.
This is the face of a man who has the entire Loom of Fate stuck in his brain.
Fuck yes I love him
My current thoughts on the '5 motes, free at bonfire' is:
-Workers get extra soak/some hardness to represent them being as constant and durable as stone
-Soldiers get some bonus parry and bonus to movement actions. They're skirmishers and defensive troops, not beatsticks.
-Artisans impose a penalty on attacks against them, with Fey-like Glamour/Untouchable Beauty.
They're all Defensive Bonuses but defensive bonuses in different ways.
Showing off different aspects of the Jadeborn. Durability, Skill and Wonder.
made another bh chart that is less elric shitposts @icy ravine @merry arch @fading cypress
There are actual venoms less toxic than this looks (Approvingly) 😛
Hmm...how much penalty do you think '5m (Free at bonfire)' buys for like
Glamour (5m or 0m; Reflexive; Until next turn) A spark of the Jadeborn's unearthly brilliance inflicts a –??? penalty on attack rolls and other hostile actions against her. Enemies can pay 1 willpower to ignore this for a single action.```
On the subject of toxic abyssals I have to report that my omni-badtouch build has been retired for that game as I realized ghosts can't get sick by normal diseases, but had it not been her E3-ish setup would have had her doing this on a successful martial arts decisive:
Poison:
Black Claw Poison (Damage 2i/Round, Duration Ess + Manip, Penalty -2)
Snake Style POison (Damage 1a/round, duration 1 round/2 dice of raw damage, penalty -2)
arrow frog poison (Damage 3i/round (L in crash), duration 5 rounds, -2 penalty)
centipede poison (Damage 3i/round, duration (essence or 3) + onslaught, -1 penalty)
Disease:
White Veil Disease (virulence manip + 1, morbidity 5, interval 1 day)
Infected Wounds (with +2 virulence and morbidity)
WHite Sun Fever (or other citrine pox supernatural ailment)
Any disease I've cured or been infected by
Environmental
-1 dexterity
Oh, btw folks, looks like the Master Sheet was updated a few days ago
I suppose that's as good an excuse as any to make an Abyssal
lol
Hm, Day Caste created by the Black Heron who Just Wants To Fuck Around
Defining Principle: "If I fuck around enough, eventually I'll find out"
Yes
Apocalyptic Dodge maybe?
Also I'll make them with the self-imposed constraint that apocalyptic gives max essence + 1, rather than max essence = 5
Hm, Brawl or Martial Arts ...
Abyssals can get some nasty MA combos going in combination with their native survival and medicine charms
(see above)
Oh right Abyssal survival lets you summon blizzards and such, right?
Yeah
Is there a list of charm trees-to-Deathlords correspondences that I'm missing?
don't think anyone actually wrote one that I recall
love her your honor.
honestly i’d love to see more abyssal brawl goin’ on
shit’s fun as hell
I do appreciate that Abyssal Brawl and Abyssal Melee both have strength-primary stuff
I guess with Dodge Apocalyptic, Thrown and Brawl are both solid picks ...
She is my beautiful prince with a disorder
Thank u she’s Worse
shes fine actually, i said so
you should see her sister
oh yayayayay
girls get to be contrary and awful
you should see her dad
girls are encouraged to be so
i should drag another lancer oc i made recently into exalted and make another abyssal.
i love u alicia u fucking terrible awful butch
So, something I'm noticing about Abyssals is that they share one sick bone from Solars: their charm trees seem oriented around the presence of Apocalyptic, with a lot of really excitingly Abyssal-feeling-stuff being locked to higher essences
Is that the Supernal equivalent?
Yeah
It's a problem for Solars, too, where a disproportionate number of Essence 1 charms are Not Very Interesting
Abyssals have it better on account of their whole trees being interesting
But I think the skewed proportions are still there
yeah i can kinda look past it when the entire trees are interesting vs. the amount of uninteresting bloat in solar trees. granted i still don't like it as a solaroid gimmick
Yeeeeah
i like to build wide and solaroids seem to push you towards putting all your eggs in one basket and it sucks
Something I started noticing with Solars after building a sid for the first time, and which I'm now noticing with Abyssals, is that the layout of the charms Yes That
There's some really cool stuff buried deep in the trees, seemingly under the assumption that you'll access it with Apocalyptic/Supernal
Yeah this is how Duck Fate works
Is this a Water DB trying to assassinate a sidereal?
(who they probably didn't even know was an exalt)
SCARLET YAAAY SCARLET
@winged swallow Probably something to keep in mind if you weren't already, re: make sure there's weird shit at Essence 1
i contemplated a mechanic where you could opt out of a supernal and gain generalist benefits but i didn’t know how to mechanically represent that
yeah things need to be rebalanced anyway since new supernal is (effective essence = (current essence + 1)))
Yeah
But even beyond balance I think there's a secondary question of excitement
Where like, even if E1 is loaded with top-tier dice tricks
If all it's got are dice tricks
I am bored now
when i say rebalanced
Is what I'm getting at
Aye
There's an E5 Abyssal survival charm for creating a blizzard, which is amazing and I love that
yeah i like this idea personally, though im not a game designer or homebrewer in any capacity so. sounds cool. got no clue where to steer that either LOL
mm, yeah i know what you mean
But that portion of the tree's only E1 part is "weather doesn't do much to you"
Del do you have a blank version of this
i should fill this out for harrow sometime
Is it a bad sign that my first two thoughts for the Abyssal I'm starting to put together for this are FLCL Naoto and Toph Bei Fong
don't see why
this is the butch im considering fastballing into exalted
oh. ohohohohohohohohho
Also Seven Edges of the Raiton is an unreasonably cool charm
HAHAHAHA
It would be very funny if every single time one of these ref sheets got posted Alucard Castlevania was on it
look alucard is fundamental brainrot for me
felt
Oh I'm just amused that he appears on both yours and Delilah's
And think we should keep up the streak
lilah helped quite a lot in the brainstorming of mr. alicia there
hm. harrow’s would be… the punisher, hakaider, DRK ff14, marie sanson, uhhhhhhhh
strong as fuck already
the funny thing is i never knew or considered hakaider when i was making harrow initially
delilah was like “hey, hakaider’s pretty harrowcore”
and then she brought up the “if you are justice, then i am revenge!” quote
and i was like “oh wow that IS harrow-esque”
HAHAHAHA
hakaider is good civilization
