Or any of the other winds, really
Sid I'm building has evolved into the daughter of a wind god
I think the only big mention is with the wind bears
I imagine they'd be part of the Beuro of Seasons. So while I'm not sure we have much on specific wind gods, we do have the political structure they're connected to.
Wind Masters!
Blue Skulking Bear
Five dragons all named "bear" XD
Or 0 if you're doing something relevant to World-Shaping Artistic Vision
WSAV is simultaneously god tier and good characterization
Developing a sudden dislike of Solars in the wake of learning more about Sids seems oddly appropriate

I was thinking more the continued persecution of the Lunars
Honestly the Jade Prison seems like a reasonable precaution
the ultimate time out box
Well, that and not trying to do anything about the Underworld
Which is something Lunars could have helped with
Given they can do 2nd circle necromancy
And Sids and deebs cannot
A lot of 'em are pretty mad about their Designated Husband Caste dying
Yeh
I feel "kill whatever Lunars we needed to to make the usurpation work then try really really really hard to make peace, using the Lunars who sided with us as ambassadors" would have been sensible
up until the whole "neverborn waking up" thing, there wasn't really much indication that the underworld, as a whole, was something that needed a solution
But I think the continued efforts to kill them personally probably mattered more
Also they have a noted adaptability in the Wyld that I bet could be brought to bear in the Underworld
possibly attempted peace treaty stuff was fucked up by Arcane Fate in the really early days
since nobody was used to that yet
arcane fate on one side and the bond on the other is a bitch
But also the Sids made an explicit decision to write the Lunars into the Immaculate Faith as antagonists
And that was done because the Lunars got grumpy and tried the whole 'rebellion to take over the deliberative' thing IIRC
so Sol and Luna went 'no, that almost threatened to destroy creation, get in the get along shirt'
I just feel like the Sids, masters of being controlling fuckwads, should have known better than to leave the Underworld, a place outside of Fate that they cannot easily monitor, entirely to its own devices
The Underworld went really quiet until Thorns tbf
Well, they thought it was being quiet anyway, because nobody was watching
Great Contagion is caused by a Deathlord
There are cities and kingdoms and all kinds of weird stuff down there, it just seems negligent
Really, the Usurpation and even the Jade Prison seem reasonable, but the policy of the aftermath feels impressively Collective Sidereal Limit Break
tbf the purge took pretty long and brought a lot of friends into conflict so everyone was doing limit breaks mid conflict left and right
yes, explicitly. the more sids are involved in a prophecy interpretation, the more they're blinded by their own ideas of what Should happen. at least, that was how it was before 3e
I could see the purge finally being completed and the sids are collectively so filled with hubris over that, that they're all standing around making bad decisions
that is no longer how it works, because it was kind of annoying to go "literally whatever you decide will be stupid as hell" as a faction dynamic
nobody else's great curse mandated that they sucked
solar murderblender limit breaking into furious anger is going to go on a great rampage
2e kinda had a hate-on for the sids, in retrospect
But I would chalk it up to years of limit breaks followed by everyone taking a big sigh of relief and patting themselves on the back leading to just a collective feeling of "we've got this, we're in control" in the Fellowship
yeah
I will also say that the lunars are also making some kinda wonky decisions here
even the toned-down 3e Lunar Elders are pretty big on the genocide thing
And also yeah, they'd just spent years fighting the lunars
It's easy to decide someone is going to continue to be your enemy
(hi, Ul the Burning Eye, a man who was actually very reasonable for a long time and then decided that pacifism demanded he kill every dragonblood with Great Contagion 2)
I think all this makes sense as a story of normal social dynamics and tremendous bias, exacerbated by a curse that made the Sids overly certain of themselves
of the problems facing the Sids, "begin to build bridges with at least some of the Lunars" is one of the more approachable ones, and that's saying a lot considering it's a 700 year old blood feud
It would be funny if there were one Sid elder who essentially ruined his status and career running around shouting "WE NEED TO MONITOR THE UNDERWORLD" at the top of his lungs for centuries and centuries, and now everybody should be listening to him but he's burned all his bridges
Green Lady
that's basically always been her deal
she was a junior sid shuffled into the sleepy Convention On The Dead and eventually everyone was like "oh, she really is right about this"
Oh, she was doing Underworld stuff before the Deathlords? I thought she was just focused on espionage
Okay
we should perhaps be monitoring the underworld
with how many sids? get real, there's five of us with any free time on a given day
still in her 3e writeup, yeah
the Sids are explicitly engaging in underworld diplomacy, it's not just Kill Kill Kill the Ghosts
To-Do List for my little homebrew Gold Faction grouplet, By Approachability:
- kill rakan
- recruit gets
- be nice to the newer lunars
- oh god the Realm
- lamp??
amazingly, "kill the most powerful man in existence" is step 1
Although I suppose being Bronze Faction specifically to get people in the faction to care about her personal issue would fit her profile
It's noted that she actively helps with Wyld Hunts and the like, but I could see that being mostly political
Iron Faction (oh god we need to fix the underworld)
Glass Faction:
THE FAE
glass faction, or: One Weird Trick to break the Fellowship's taboo on outright murder
dirt faction: mortal
Still working out non-mechanical specifics but here is a person https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16HoGyhxJW4YSLUSYETQNFnhwQYmy9K0ZSq0gfP10Zqg/edit?usp=sharing
I forget, is that a 7SS or explicitly nunchuks?
is there any mechanical distinction
martial arts compatibility
answer: it's a seven-section staff
so yeah you can take CMOS with this
which is great
add 300 more sidereals and expand the faction system to have: Iron Faction, Glass Faction, Brass Faction, Silver Faction, Copper/Dirt Faction, Blood Faction (Liminals), Mirror Faction (Gets), Adamant Faction, Cogs Faction
Faction Faction
Gold Faction 2
I can now alloy the copper faction and the tin faction to make more bronze sids
Maraging Steel Faction
there's already a silver faction tho
they are, probably understandably, not very outspoken about it, but they do exist
i dont think silver is a thing in 3e yeah
oh. that's kinda lame.
I thought Silver Pact was filling that slot, metaphorically
well, 3e also pushed the 'sidereals and lunars all hate each other and want genocide against each other and ther'es no real way to fix it, its' been tried and it's failed every isngle time' really hard
I mean really hard
the factions aren't just "which exalt do we want to be on top of Creation" any more either
gold faction is more than solar fan club in 3e so i think lunar friends fall in the tent
yeah, it's more conservative verses liberal in like, a risk-taking sense
bronze faction doesn't want to take undue risks in pursuit of a better creation, gold is willing to take those risks if it means a better creation, sorta deal
bronze is supportive of the status quo, gold wants to try different, and such
I enjoy that everyone now has political opinions on things that aren't just "I'm for solars (good)" and "I'm against solars (evil)"
And Emerald Gyre, VBOS, Centipede, and Mantis - all but the last of which are very attractive pickups
The first draft had VBOS and Centipede charms as well
The backstory for the Bureau of Seasons makes me :D
So they also get a writeup in the Sids book, it turns they are dragons with the heads of bears :D
trying to find a good martial art to pair with CMOS
Live Wire works, although you have to lose the armour
Live Wire is extremely rad
tbf it's not like a mid-to-high essence sid isn't likely to have a bunch of reasons to want to avoid armor
Oh, huh, The Center Must Hold just ... immunizes you to a source of uncountable damage for 4m
Jebus mccrizzle Sidereal resistance is good
iiiiiinteresting
It's got a lot of ways to say "actually no, fuck off" to attacks, rather than just making them slide off of you
Perfect defense against an attack unless the opponent hates you specifically
Feels odd the Sidereal Sail is so strictly about being on a boat
When part of the deal with Sidereal charms is they so often go wide afield
there's a whole bunch of things in there that work without a boat
the good thing about sid sail is that you can take your boat anywhere
Solar Sail cannot pick the boat up and park it in a small oasis 1000km inland
I'm still not sure what kind of intimacy you need to cite to resist Unwavering Wellbeing Meditation
I would assume Intimacy of Punch That Sid
Yeah I would imagine a negative intimacy of most types would work
to be fair, most solars don't need a charm to do that
This statement confuses me
... looking again, there is more than I remembered on first look
Lots of War type stuff
....yeah, they very much do
solar without charms is just a normal very swole guy
solar magic looks like they're just that good but they are using the unmatched bullshit of the mightiest deity in the setting to do it
in the same way that Sids look like lucky bastards who never really exert themselves if you don't know they are actively warping causality
(Lunars are pretty straightforward in comparison, because they use their magic to give themselves comically huge bear muscles and pick the boat up like that, the methodology is a bit more obvious)
Simply become the boat
or that
I chose falcon and nightingale
Since cmos let's you "fly" the synergy seems good
i probably should have specified they don't need a sail charm for that
Solars and Lunars answering the eternal "how did that boat get on the roof" question
Rather pleased with this
Daughter of Blue Skulking Bear, Wind-Master of the North, Wise Songbird spent her childhood among the spirits of her father's icy palace. When her father's supervisors learned of Songbird, in a rare moment of agreement, they saw that she was brought to Yu-shan to be taught within the Bureau of Seasons. There, in the course of what was often an ad-hoc education by the bureau's line-workers and staff, she learned the history and structure of Yu-shan from the perspective of its working class, developing a radical political stance whilst training with the organizer Let Mountains Fall. In that time, she met and bonded with Lupercal, and was trained as a sorcerer.
Songbird was watched by the Bureau of Destiny from before she entered Yu-shan, and they played a careful role in spurring her father's supervisors to act. While helping elementals of the Bureau of Seasons research a series of increasingly esoteric weather anomalies across Creation, she exalted, racing across the sky on the back of a huraka. The Bureau of Destiny was ready to recruit Song properly upon her return, revealing the role they had quietly played in assuring her opportunities. Glad to finally have her own place in the Celestial Bureaucracy, she accepted immediately.
...thinking about it, being Similar to Flickering Moonsilver likely isn't a problem (Though better and cheaper is a concern. I'll up the cost and move it to later in the charmset), as PAOC and this style don't actually Share Form Weapons.
Tragic how Deadly Claw Blow doesn't work with medium weapons :(
question
is there currently any charm that says "You may move freely for a turn, but at the end of your turn you always end up at the position you started"?
Witch-Beast Unicorn Familiar seems like it would be really good with Self-Buff spells like Invincible Skin of Bronze.
sounds like something that would be Siderial?
Athletics: Red Queen's Futility?
I'm very slowly designing a Sidereal smash fist artifact
the idea is that it has a charm for each Maiden
In their positive and negative
oh my god
Almost certainly not usable with witch-beast, which disallows apex predators but
... I feel like there is a level of inconsistency here
Yeah. I'll admit, Unicorns are a bit of a grey area. I don't think something that is the subordinate mount of lords can count as an 'apex predator' but it's also big and scary. XD
Dolphins are more powerful than any kraken
Another 3-dot familiar falling behind dolphins, smh my head
where does it disallow apex predators?
I checked it and all the pre-req charms and they work on any familiar, though they're specialized mroe towards animal ones
oooh
From Many-Faced Strangers
there's a charm called witch-beast ascendency in FATG that grants a familiar sorcery
@tulip folio Check out dream hawks, they seem like a really good candidate
sorry I got confused
Riding Hawks are cool familiars
What book are dream hawks in?
Hundred Devils Night Parade
(did they ever stat up mospids in 3rd?)
ye
dope
hunting archeopteryx my beloved
oh my god
Dream Hawks are pretty good Support Familiars, yeah
Mice of the Sun are fuckin' 3-dot familiars this is the best day of my life
...wait...
They're more Solar-oriented, tragically
Could a Sidereal learn Plague of the Sun with Citrine Poxes?
oooh not sure
It's a supernatural plague and it's not 'great contagion' big
It's also just like, the most degrading supernatural sickness.
As there is a simple, easy way to cure it
Just pray for forgiveness~
I'm really tempted to add 'Mouse of the Sun' to the list of familiars that Sid Blademaster of mine has, as she's a beastmaster with a Hawk and a Horse right now.
Honestly Plague of the Sun on a badly-behaved Zenith seems exactly appropriate
...it's surprising that Aughdeighe don't have a familiar rating
They've got like 4 different 'master' or 'latent ability' things.
I could've sworn there was a clear definition of an animal lying around somewhere. Anyone remember?
Aha, lunars
I'll admit, it does irk me that a chunk of the best lunar familiar charms are locked off under 'animal' as that definition kinda screws over 'moderately supernatural animal' getting them.
Yeah the definition of animal in Exalted is "anything that exists or could have reasonably existed on earth"
Which means Tyrant Lizards are somehow a valid option for buffs but not Dream Hawks
(I'll admit, as a GM I'd ignore the animal limitation on familiar charms, with the understanding that as a GM I will veto particularly bad combos. A Unicorn is a Magic Fey Horse. If you want to buff it, it's still not going to be Tyrant Lizard mean.)
Aye, I'm looking at the same issue re: sid charms
Just put it on a monkey
All I'm saying is, this is clearly not an apex predator
Look, if it can't beat an E1 lunar, it's clearly not an apex predator because lunars are part of the ecosystem 😛
This is also a bit weird because Simhata are listed as animals, and have an explicitly magical power
A pair of Quetzalcoatlus engage a T. rex guarding an Alamosaurus carcass…
A confrontation between two of North America's top, yet highly contrasting terrestrial hunters, Tyrannosaurus rex and Quetzalcoatlus northropi…
One is a heavy, muscle-packed, heavily armed theropod, sporting a strong bite force and bone crushing teeth, tools that ena...
brb, nerfing the lunar by bringing a palaeontologist to tell him that the dinosaurs he likes are fake
Simhata sorta work for me in that they're just primeval horses 99% of the time
Incidentally Tyrant Lizards have an actual merit called "apex predator", surely this means everything that doesn't have that merit qualifies :V
I keep forgetting how many dinosaurs are in exalted
Siege Lizard, amusingly, probably qualifies as a three-star animal which is not an apex predator
As do River Bastions and Shieldback Lizards
As long as the Tyrant Lizard exists, I don't think any other dino can be an apex predator
Siege Lizard with Invincible Skin of Bronze
Yes
...you know what would be terrifying?
Any of those 'I turn into a substance' spells on a Witch Beast
'I put this on my siege lizard'
As that 'I have no gear' downside rapidly stops being a downside
I believe river kings can eat a tyrant lizard
Or whatever they're called
Wait
Tyrant lizard
Made of electricity
Close enough
Welcome back fulger anjanath
Do you think it would be unreasonable to have something at a lower dot level than usual if you can't use it for the purpose it's normally a big/impossible purchase? Like a Thousand Forged Dragon as like a 3 dot mentor rather than Artifact N/A as you know where one is and he'll talk with you/provide lessons on first age knowledge but he's not cleared to 'actually fight things/his command codes are long lost so he won't be burninating the countryside any time soon'
'Giant metal lizard wizard, likes his books very large print'
Hmm. I don't see it on a book or quick google search, do we knwo what the god in charge of infantry combat is called?
... wait, war falls under Abstract Matters, not Battles?
War is under Battles
I mean, the Bureau of Destiny has a very specific job - the God of War In General has a huge portfolio
It's why a lot of the Gods in Destiny's service seem to have narrower purviews
The better to focus on the Destiny thing
the division of battles is concerned with war but only insofar as it involves destined wars rather than war as a whole
war as a whole falls under abstract matters
this is also why, for example, the god of death isn't in the division of endings per se
there's a lot of cross-bureau work in this regard. lotsa paperwork. meetings that could've been a letter
Letters taht could have been a kung-fu duel
yes that too
okay, Ahlat is part of the Bureau of Heaven in the Department of Abstract Matters, that's confirmed
it looks like the closest option to a god of infantry might be Sunipa, the eastren war god, since she's the goddess of soldiers and officers
of Heaven’s Division of War and the Bureau of Seasons’
Aerial Legion. It orchestrates training drills and heavenly
wargames for them and coordinates deployments of
martial deities. It conducts security operations in concert
with the Department of Celestial Concerns, a duty that’s
grown increasingly prominent as the Getimians have
struck at Heaven itself. It also maintains close working
relationships with a number of gods in the Bureaus of
Heaven and Humanity whose purviews concern warfare:
war orphans, weaponry, battlefield illnesses, and so on.```
war as a whole gets divided across like 5 directional gods
Yeah but there is a god that's just god of war, flat out, that those five answer to
E-Naluna, per some googling
regardless, Sunipa works well enough for my purposes
Heaven's military being part of Seasons is funny
its warm, crops are planted, harvests a few months away, looks like its war season
Look, they don't cross a picket line!
I am also pondering doing something very silly for Architects
In backstory, all from the same place
('every social connection I could possibly have ever had')
"Brother, may I have some motes"
But also it cost me a lot because one of these artifacts is 100% cursed, one is arguably cursed, and one probably makes the curse on the first one noticeably worse
(Ajelin is an extremely cursed sword, Penumbra is a shield that feeds self-doubt, and Seven Furies Caged makes the Relentless Lunar Fury line so much more excessive)
Also: is there any way to get extra mutations on your spirit shape beyond Chimera-Soul?
Sorcerous Workings should work to add mutations to spirit shapes
if you can use a workign to entirely remake your castes you can make your spirit shape weirder
alt, if casteless: spend some time in the wyld
Cornerstone of Yu Shan (5 Dot Artifact)
Starmetal Warstrider
Not technically a warstrider but a stone that can be pushed into a building of at least 3 stories in height. Over the next hour, the building slowly rises from the ground as a massive building-shaped City-Titan Warstrider inlaid with starmetal.
Special: The city-titan causes no collateral damage to any urban environment it was formed from, or to the inhabitants of that area (Though it can still cause deliberate harm). The Cornerstone of Yu Shan cracks as the City-Titan takes damage, requiring repair as normal for a Warstrider.
The City-Titan is compatible with First Pulse Style, despite the style not normally being usable in heavy armour. Architects are always resonant with the Cornerstone of Yu Shan.
My silly pondering.
Six-eyed, white-furred bear with patches of black chitin at vital points and legs ending in the claws of a spider.
To be tbh given this character's soak is already like 18+wound penalty, dropping unusual soak would probably be just fine >_>
Does the Cornerstone seem Too Silly a 5 dot artifact?
20-24 soak in spirit form :D
Nah! Portable Warstriders are fun, and like. You can just adjust the stats down slightly to account for not requiring first age artifice
and for being easier to sneak into places
That's sorta part of why I went with 'takes an hour to start up'. As normally warstriders can be booted up in like...10 minutes without charm support, 1 minute with charm support. XD
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12Q6wOe-uroZpcHH1n8epcPV0eyM1tEaLjHJpkue1ETQ/edit?usp=sharing Here's the abomination in all her glory
To make the 'easier to sneak into places' not quite as 'SUDDENLY WARSTRIDER!'
There is a stealth warstrider, fwiw
...snrk I know what I'm going to list in the 'Standard Armaments'
Smashfists
Another Building
Spire
Guard Tower Crossbow
Give it like 3 Improvised Standard Armaments, since this is associated with First Pulse.
Hmm. On the one hand warstrider pilots need a lore specialty, on the other hand I've already got occult, and I feel like I want at least one defensive ability in this set of exigent abilities (right now i'm looking at Athletics, War, Occult, Craft, and Integrity)
nice
@sinful cave does great art.
but yeah, if you were making an exigent of a warstrider god, given the abilities needed to pilot a warstrider, what set of five caste do you feel is more appropriate:
athletics, war, occult, craft, integrity
Athletics, war, lore, craft, integrity
athletics, lore, craft, occult, integrity
athletics, war, occult, craft, lore
these are the four sets I'm vaguely pondering
Hmm...I like the first one. You need a sorcerous working to fix a fully trashed warstrider.
So I feel like occult is needed.
Lore would make sense but it's kinda just a 'mandatory benchmark' ability.
So it's the most cuttable.
And a god of warstriders is legally required to have Hot Blood And Courage, so Integrity isn't really cuttable
War is where the combat charms are going to live, Athletics is kind of 'the stat for doing pilot stuff' for warstriders (it was ride in ex2 iirc)
so yeah, i'll go with the first one. rip chosen of warstrider god, you have to spend points in a non-caste ability to actually do your thing (one dot and a specialty)
Vague Pondering: War is the ability for using Siege Weapons.
I could see them getting an ability-swap charm that is 'when In A Warstrider, use War instead of the normal ability'
ooh
After all, what's the difference between a Warstrider's Crossbow and a Ballista?
Also a silly pondering: You can have Forms in a normal charmset (Looking at you sids). You could do something with that and warstrider stuff. Mechs do love their 'I have activated my cool ability' and forms let you have multiple scene-long effects without them getting stacked on top of each other.
I had a vague thought for each ability getting a form-style charm that basically changed the mech's specialty to something else, War getting a super offensive mode, integrity a defensive one, one of them getting a Sneaky Scout Mode
"Be very very quiet we're hunting Solars" - 30 foot tall giant robot
Borrowing what alchs can do with Devastating Actions would be fun for one of them.
Where they can use it to beat up another Legendary Size Guys
yeah, I'll probably steal some stuff from it
and yeah, definitely stealing some colossus stuff too
(Artist is ibaranatsu_pbw) “Wow this is perfect! White hair! Silver equipment! Armor and shield! And … high heels.”
God-kicking boots need spikes to deal lethal damage more effectively
It's also within range of Cavalry Heels. See: Some Persian ones
Yes but those are both not for foot combat and have a very large point of contact
Heels are just a peeve of mine
Their entire purpose is to change the center of gravity to exaggerate the T&A
So if you see someone standing perfect upright and poised with them, the anatomy of the leg is wrong >_>
Isn't this a Lunar?
It's very possible the joints under that dress are doing something seen only in an obscure species of extinct equine
I like that Lunars get to pull shapeshifting out for extremely minor shenanigans, it's the one thing that might make me play one other than "don't you want Crane Style compatibility?"
Apparently one of the secret techniques in the Sid Book is "crane + black claw" which would be a horrible monstrous no moon if you slapped DBT on top
You'd need like seven attributes at 5 to max it, admittedly
doing black claw style in DBT sounds hilarious
"i'm just a little guy, are you gonna pick on a little guy" says the 12 foot tall murder armadillo
DBT Black Claw: He's literally kicking a puppy-person! The monster!
"I am a rare species of near-extinct sauropod! How dare you!"
I was thinking "freakishly beautiful bird-person with marble feathers" but that might need some form of wyld bullshit
look, fogsharks are (despite FATG's insistence) a perfectly normal creature in creation
I'm sure there' ssome sort of marble-feathered secretary bird out there
Would be perfect if the color scheme were different, so might use it
Artist is Tudasix on bird
... huh
I just realized, I think Sovereigns are the only terrestrial-level exaltation who's Great Curse actually manifests with a Limit track and break?
Possibly this! (Artist is ankoku broccoli)
Oh wait heels again
Damn it they’re hard to see but I’ll know
Luna is really determined to give this girl high heels
Might just be part of the curse on the armor
TFW you enter the “armor” tag and you get back a lot of women in bikinis with one pauldron
Fuck yes (source: https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/66774057)
Everything I want and best vibe so far
Can you only have one martial arts form at a time?
yep, primary limit on just slamming every martial arts form into each other and becoming a demigod
the one exception is Prismatic Arrangement of Creation Form, which allows you to either combine all four of the other PAOC forms or any one SMA/two regular MA forms of your choice, gaining the pick of all their weapon and armour compatibility
combining Soul-Fire Shaper Form, Crane Form and Single Point Form and augmenting them with Sidereal Melee full defence charms will result in heavenly censure for too much powergaming
Bird-Shaper Into The Void
The Black Heron?
dropping Single Point for Sid Melee is probably more sensible, I really want to try that build out someday
unfortunately the sensible progression is "get 10 charms from Sid Melee, then get all of PAOC, then add crane on top" which denies me funny crane moves for the first four essence levels
Even the four PAOC charms add up to a pretty crazy suite of bonuses
I want to make a melee sid who has the sentient sword artifact and single point into the void
if you can get onslaught negation from somewhere else you can commit horrible crimes with that combo
Now I feel bad that my Sid is going Sid Melee + Single Point. XD
"My squad is me, my sword, and my sword"
add on Charcoal Style
"Me and me and me and my sword and my sword"
you have Defence 13 without spending a mote, you can use that one neat Eclipse Charm to reach 15 for 3 motes by entangling the enemy in your crane form robes and you make two attacks at full excellency overwhelming 10 on your turn for 0 motes, then one more whenever someone attacks you
throw on ISOB for Soak 18-22, Hardness 13
respect your Sidereal Elders
Lunar: "No"
the way you beat a lunar with this is literally to just keep hitting them until they run out of motes, because if you decisive them when they still have plenty then they hit the Borg Adapt charm and suddenly you are giga sad
because your overwhelming 10 is now 0
luckily, nobody on earth can soak you
bonus points for pretending to be a full moon the entire time purely for BM
ah, here we are
yeah, decisive only when crashed
(I do really like Lunar combat and their general themes of STOMP STOMP STOMP but I like being a gremlin with martial arts more)
you knwo your sidereal builds do have that taste of Absolute Gremlin Behavior to them
(this is a compliment)
the crane one is "I really want to be a raid boss"
I have many more builds that are more normal than this
honestly "literally just attach CMOS + WSAV to any other tree" gets me to acceptable gremlin levels
Lunars have a lot of 'witch' themed stuff but I must admit I'm not 100% sure how good they are if someone wants to be more mental/magical more than a beatstick. XD
they have very good direct social and basically no bureaucracy stuff
social lunars are very scary because they have 50000 charms to buff up their choice of FEAR ME/LOVE ME, but if you want to summon an army from nowhere or similar you need a Solar or a Sid
good niche honestly
Well if you want to summon an army from nowhere you can just turn into the army
you can still very much do big stuff but you do it by finding people in positions of power and wrapping them around your newly shapeshifted sixth finger
Lunars can do animal armies from nowhere iirc, but yeah, if you want humans they're not great at doing it instantly/with charms
They can shadow clone an army of themselves
Lunars rarely have "summon (x) from nowhere" because they almost always have "you are now the (x)"
they basically don't have bureaucracy charms, both literally (attribute exalted) and practically (the closest they get is "take territory, defend territory")
they do their pack-leading with Presence-analogues instead
Oh yeah I was thinking more mental than social. Lore/Investigation/Occult/Linguistics sorta nerdery
lots of that, especially occult
I admit I don't pay a ton of attention to social lunar stuff because my eyes blur reading page after page after page of very similar charms for each attribute
Alchs are much better formatted for my brain
Eating Gods for free merits is always fun
trees too goddamn long
Omm Nomm Nomm Conchy
The full PAOC suite is:
- unarmed attacks get artifact weapon status (this ain't much, but it's not nothing either)
- the PAOC attack charms have -2 mote cost (this is most consequential for stacking 2-3 versions of Five Jade Fury on every single attack, and also mote regen via the orichalcum charm)
- immunity to crippling
- hi i can use weapon evocations i've learned while unarmed, without even needing the artifact, if that makes any sense at all and i'm resonant with 4/5 magical materials now
- +2 essence for all calculations jfc
- kill the willpower cost on several of your anti-bullshit moves
- turn initiative gain into mote gain 1:1
- spend 5m instead of paying 1wp (only once per turn! this is not a meaningful only)
- gain half of essence as initiative when you use an anti-bullshit move once per round
- get +Appearance dice on all physical actions against opponents who can perceive you, so you know free excellency forever, all the time
- +1 evasion if the opponent has resolve lower than appearance (not huge but)
- opponents have to pay wp the first time in the scene they try to attack you after booting up
- people get addicted to watching you fight wtf
- five free hearthstone effects
- if any of those hearthstone effects work on your attacks, congrats, you get +3 to +5 damage for free
- you ... get bonus successes on Lore and Occult rolls about manses?
- +lore/2 or +occult/2 to base initiative when fighting in a manse or demesne (situational but it could come up!)
- get +(martial arts styles learned, max 10) initiative for getting all of this up and running
Also you can realistically do this while attacking on the first round
And this is essence 5 and is ultimately the combination of a lot of charms
- if you're in a demesne , get +1 to +3 motes/round depending on how cool a demesne it is
But once it's on it's just ... on
fun fact - "counterspell and steal an enemy reflexive charm enhancing their attack as long as you're ahead on init" costs 2m 1wp
with Soulfire Form that becomes 2m flat, and using it gets you 3-4 init back which you can exchange for motes 1:1
MOTE POSITIVE HEAVEN THUNDER HAMMER
Starting to think I can get very silly with that SMA I was plotting.
If you're a celestial circle sorcerer, you can stop a solar circle spell for 5 motes
the fun thing is that alone, each of these charms is "strong, but nothing overwhelming"
then you put the entire 16-charm mega suite together and you just never run out of tricks ever
average sid moment, really
The big thing with PAOC is getting a fucktillion bonuses, some modest and some quite strong, and then using them all at once forever while constantly generating essence and initiative
'Stab a guy so well you kill one of his charms' no longer seems quite so silly. XD
this is also why the entire Anys Syn statblock is scary-but-nothing-overwhelming
her actual statblock is hidden in the prerequisites for her elder charm
It is a testament to just how much bullshit other SMAs have that this is not just the intrinsically best style
What do you think is the most generic loadout for a warstrider (as much as such a thing could exist), a longsword, a crossbow and Bigass Hands And Feet (TM)?
Protagonist of pacific rim
CMOS is not worse than PAOC which reveals that CMOS is completely insane
if you aren't giving your warstrider a zaku heat hawk, what are you even doing
at essence 3, a Sidereal using CMOS can dematerialize reflexively every single turn for no cost and rematerialize at the start of their next
this shuts down... basically 90% of things in the universe
you must be this tall to rumble
the heat hawk's going to be in the 'I am here to fuck my enemies and terrify my allies and i'm all out of allies' mode
This is why my assumption is that the first thing every PAOC stylist grabs is manse-and-demesne emulation to get the spirit-striking hearthstone >_>
(I believe people have actually ran some whiteroom tests with Anys Syn using all the martial arts her statblock and combo suggest she actually has, and she only loses to Falafel or a sufficiently cracked E5 Solar Brawl cheese)
oh, you want something even worse? if you are willing to dip both, Spirit-Cutting Attack is a supplemental charm enhancing your enemies' attack, and as such is vulnerable to Essence Redirection Technique
you can parry so hard you can knock your enemies' sword out of the immaterial realm and then just ignore it
personally I rule that you cannot use counterspell to end reflexive charms that create attacks to perfectly block them, but it isn't one of those
the fact that Solar Brawl is still uncontested as most bullshit combat suite in the game is something of a testament to how broken core was
I do like the lunar ability to just become a manse, on the hearthstone front
mental image of a sid and a lunar showing up covered in hearthstones, looking at the solar and going "well where's yours?"
"we just found these"
... oh shit
lunars can just fucking
grow a Hierophant's Eye
do you think that's at 'GM will veto this' tier or nah?
What's that one do
What's that one again?
hmmm
the DB empire doesn't automatically declare Exigents Anathema
How tightly does it try to control them?
according to the deeb and exigent books, this varies wildly
Very big "depends" yeah
the Foxbinder (and her gremlin fox god) is an anathema-hunter in the service of the Immaculate Order, many others have never had an interaction with a realm official in their lives since they keep the exalt stuff on the down-low
oh yeah that's very doable
then again the uh
example one that is vetoable by the GM is 'you can't die, ever, for any reaosn'
the bullshit tends to be stuff like "free glory sphere" and "I am literally invincible"
Oh I forgot since this all probably puts you at bonfire, you're also probably getting +3 to rolls and +2 to static values with five abilities or two attributes
(Gem of Incomparable Wellness, from arms)
"8xp glory sphere" is only bullshit in very particular games, too
if you're in a mixed party with Solars I would be tempted to start issuing glory spheres as standard equipment if I hadn't nerfed supernal
Is glory sphere the +1 essence for 1 charm rock?
ydeah
ooooh
but yeah as far as anathematic exigences, it tends to be more like
politically motivated, there
I imagine if a god is in good with the immaculates, their exigents will typically be fine
an exigent that works for Lookshy is probably going to be declared anathema by the Immaculate Order, which will make the Immaculate Faith go 'what bullshit no it isn't' and then there's a big political hullabullo until someone offers a concession and they go back to sharpening their swords
(it's also important to remember there's four major branche sof the immaculate religion and they don't all agree on a lot of things)
And "in good with the immaculates" is ultimately a political matter
Like, not even in a perverse incentives way
Just one? Yeah, that's easy done. Hell, that's just a Normal Alchemical Charm.
Non-charm
Ye that makes sense
If a god is behaving according to what the immaculate faith says is protocol, they are entitled to certain benefits, as a matter of dogma
beast
So like, yeah, if a god is in their bad books, his servants are probably shit out of luck
And if he isn't, his servants will probably be seen as part of the normal order of heaven
of the example exigents: the Strawmaiden is Anathema, the Architects usually aren't, the Puppeteer probably is, and Sovereigns should be but aren't
(again, for political reasons)
And for Exigents whose gods are dead?
it boils down mostly to politics again there. If they're willign to accept the immaculate's yoke, they're not anathema. If they aren't...
And would probably come down to a mix of politics and local theology
the politics of "which exalts qualify as anathema" has at least as many edge cases as "what qualifies as heresy" did for real-world religions
(after all, they have to work hard to prove themselves worthy of a reincarnation into a less sinful form than an exigent)
there is a degree of "figure it out"
there's a section in the immaculate order section of The Realm about how each exalt type is regarded
The big thing is that the immaculates envision a specific order of creation with dragon bloods at the top, and so the question is "do you fit into that order"
oh yeah that's good
the Exigent Blacksite is some top tier Sidereal Bastardry
especially since they don't even run the place
I imagine the average Sid doesn't even care about it.
Like the immaculate order is a useful tool but they don't hold to its precepts.
I must imagine the useful ones get a tap on the shoulder and "psst, want a new job?" sometimes
This does make my plotting for an architect to play very 'Okay so how did you bribe the sids to be allowed to exist?'
Since she's the Architect of Yu Shan, attempting to clear up all that divine corruption. XD
Backing 4 - Big Shot God Patron, surely
i quite enjoy the section on sidereals where they wrote in a whole section for the immaculate texts that says 'sids are cool dw about it' but it's too obscure so sometimes it doesn't work out
my own sid (former monk) carries around a copy of the relevant texts at all time just in case
Yeah, my plan was to basicly go Backing 4: Beureuo of Humanity.
"Look, take it up with Wun Ja."
Also helps that she's got a Pretty Damn Solid chance of remembering a sid. Not certain but pretty damn solid.
does wun ja have a statblock
And being one of the Top Gods of the setting, she's likely a bloody terror.
(Also potentially the creator of First Pulse Style, depending on who you ask)
Hm, do Lunars have any tools for negating mobility penalties? I don't see anything.
Quicksilver Armor Approach in dexterity does it for an action
only from armor
Living Library Concentration: (Essence) non-Charm dice on Mental Attribute rolls involving memory.
Museum-Mind Atelier: Reroll 5s and 6s until they don't appear.
Eidetic Memory: +1 non-charm automatic success on memory.
Major intimacy directly towards Sidereals.
This architect's not certain to remember Sids but...she's well set up to have Pretty Good Odds by most people's standards.
lunar penalty negators are split up a bunch of ways, which can sting
... oh nice with many-faced strangers lunars can get up to 4 personal hearthstones inside themselves at all times
wiat, higher
6!
I have become six manses
damn, that's better than Sids, they can only be five manses at once
Becoming a manse is probably something a Metropolis Alchemical can do
must be this Manse to join
off hunting the Living Manse from HDNP, one of the most wild adversaries in the game
very much a worthy boss even for a solar circle
yeah, metropoli can explicitly develope municpal charms that act as manses
also alchs are a big ??? for immaculates iirc
alchs are a literal unknown yeah
the ones who exist in creation are basically treated as Weird Exigents
an alch can have five hearthstones installed at once but cannot spontaneously manifest specific one slike lunars and sids can
Speaking of
What are the practical consequences of a god's death/disappearance? Would it get noticed because of paperwork, or because the river has turned to blood, or something else
On the plus side: Alchs forgot to include the 'GM may veto broken ones' wording, so go enjoy the immortality rock
a) paperwork not done, they don't show up at the local spirit court
b) if anything does go wonky, it will not be fixed
this will be fun as i will be having 2 alchs in the rivergame im running
mild wyld encounters that a god would easily zap will steadily spread over the whole river, or a fate glitch will make it start flowing backwards, etc.
how fast does house heal. defeat house with hit and run tactics
I do like Architects a lot. Their charms are not great and thier trees very short but they're cool. XD
does house being a doctor factor into this
🤯
no healing charms, but it can just leave
no spirit cutter, CMOS solos
(assuming you can repeatedly win when it delays turn to clash you with an entire manse)
Tragically, the PAOC sid is required to have a permanent list of them, and can only do one at a time outside of the relevant Form charm
This does feel like a good setup for a series of escalating problems
That said: Architects don't have Terrestial and can get Celestial-Tier Sorcery (At serious cost and you almost certainly won't have both) so they can get some tricks that other terrestial-tier exalts would go 'Holy shit' over. XD
yeah, Sids are the men in black sent in when the gods and the lesser operatives can't handle things
Wyld glitch->hey where'd the god go->hey what's their exigent doing
which usually means "the problem cascade has been happening for a while"
Yeah, Lunars are the same, they get one that is representative of their soul (and must be a greater oen), then up to five that are representative of people who's asses they've kicked
but they do get all of them at once
the ass-kicking rewards also cost XP to be permanent, 6 for a standard and 12 for a greater (or free/4 XP for your first purchase of a permanent one from the charm)
the sid one is a great toolkit because you can just shove spirit cutting, wyld corruption negator, Smashing attacks and a couple more of your choice in there and pop them out when you need them
Gem of Crushing Might isn't actually that good, but it does allow you to qualify all your decisive unarmed attacks for +5 damage while in PAOC Form for 1 mote committed
There's a couple of natural picks, yeah.
also holy shit that damage bonus
I didn't realise it was post-soak on withering
fuck you, PAOC Black Claw is now punching for post-soak 8 smash attacks, 13 with Endings
...huh, I didn't realize Architects were the only terrestial exigent with a Full Size Excellency
Puppeteers have Stat + Spec
Sovs have 4+ Anima level
While an Architect anywhere urban has a full Stat + Skill Excelency.
hmm, completely useless for DAMF but you want this in your silken armour
Not many exalts period have Stat + Skill
sid goes even harder than sid previously thought possible (this costs 5 motes, not 1wp)
Tragically, no existing suit of silken armor has a hearthstone slot
So you'd need an amulet as well
Which costs a mote to attune :(
I suppose
sid going all out with this can get their dice to succeed on 4s rerolling 1s doubling 10s, although it does cost 2wp and Sids eat willpower like chocolates
so 8/9 of a success per die
shame it doesn't work on crafting
amazing for some kind of light weapon clash build though
E1 w/ sid melee + WSAV, that's 17-18 successes for 8m 1wp
that's putting just about anyone on the floor
Had an idea for an exigent that's the Sword Saint
Which probably already exists
But I like the idea that it's an exigence anyone can earn if they defeat the current holder in a completely mundane duel
Any use of magic forfeits it
On either side
Can you just not accept the challenge to a duel?
Either way, there's a pretty powerful god of swords who could be good for that
I feel that "using magic doesn't count" does make the inevitable super exalted sword duels a little less cool, because if someone challenges you to the duel that is a key hook for your character you both have to put all their charms and excellencies away and then roll normal attacks at each other for a few rounds
Also permanent charms like Ox-Body would get weird
or, like, being a lunar
with your 5000 attribute points
not that a lunar could win said exaltation
I mean I guess this challenge would only work coming from mortals
It's not like you can be a Double Exalt
disguised lunar, holding Sword That Exalts You: "what am I meant to do with this?!"
I genuinely don't remember, is it possible for mortals to learn martial arts at the terrestrial level anymore? I would think not
they can get dots but not charms unless they do Something Weird
the one in Adversaries is the sifu of a Snake sect which is blessed by a snake spirit, and as such she and a few of her top students can use Snake Style charms and are a bit weird
Right
I don't think you can just cultivate so hard you get a mote pool this edition, although I would be inclined to allow it if you meditated and trained in a particular demesne for one-and-twenty years and never left or something similarly occult
bones of literal earth, can use a few earth dragon style charms or what have you
There are I think a couple of ways to do it with exalted help?
yeah there are a few Upgrade Target Mortal charms around, but they tend to be more specific than the old 2e stuff that gave you a generic Enlightened set
lunars give mutations, solars I think can hand out a couple of low power Solar charms, Sids are the most likely to be able to manufacture Enlightened martial artists because they can forge god-bloods with blessed adoption papers
thus giving them a mote pool
Well the duel is specifically FOR the exaltation, so only a mortal can challenge for it
it does cost the Sidereal 2xp per guy, refunded when the target dies or retires
I am not sure Lunars or Solars have anything that provides a mote pool
The funny thing is that means mortals are probably the most effective people at fighting the exigent
Since a fight with no charms is much, much more likely to involve a lucky hit and the big guy goes down
Yeah that's the point
I feel like it would get passed around a lot
You have to be the best swordsman in the world BEFORE you grip the sword
Yeah it probably does
The best swordsman in the world can still lose
And probably does, frequently
Being a mortal is like that -_-
I cannot for the life of me find the Solar charm that empowers underlings with actual charms
But yeah other exalts cannot do the honor duel, it's up to the current sword Saint to decide on terms if so
maybe I imagined it
A real world anecdote: Fiore, the Italian longsword master, professes in his work that his bonafides include winning seven duels to the death. And on the one hand, fiction has trained us to say, "just seven? That doesn't seem like very much". But then one thinks about how much skill is involved in killing another trained swordsman seven times without one of them getting lucky.
they have a few for handing out dots, but that's it
Yeah I imagine this is a dead god who gave it their all to the exigence
So like, celestial tier because they are the embodiment of the God of swordsmen
But if a mortal challenges them they have to meet them on their level
OK, lunars grant mutations but no motes
Chronically avoiding hanging out with mortals
only Sids can roll around with a battlegroup of god-bloods they manufactured on the side
Only way to keep your power
That just means the one who eventually finds you and kills you is probably worthy
I'm ignoring the Essence charms that allow Getimians to manufacture exalts out of nowhere because being able to summon extra solar exaltations into existence is stupid as hell and should not exist
Or just really likes caving and mountain climbing
It turns out there's an inevitable conclusion when one lives by the sword
wait what
That's stupid as hell
And should not exist
the new Essence supplement includes a bunch of insane stuff
That's ... that is frustratingly stupid
isn't there that one in... I wanna say Occult Lore?
I also like the idea that the God in question made a deal with Heaven so if the sword ever gets lost somehow it always ends up in the hands of a swordsman
like "solars can now learn other exalts' charms without even asking them first", "getimians can pick up mountains and use them as ranged weapons, no roll required, fuck you Imperial City/Neighborhood Relocation Scheme", "Gets can arbitrarily create new exalts" and "Gets can destroy an entire direction for 3 motes at E5, no cooldown"
Empowering spirits is a lot easier than empowering mortals with magic
Which pisses off the BoD because sometimes the sword Saint dies at sea and they gotta cook up a typhoon to dredge it up or something
since you have 15 motes at E5, you can literally blow up creation by rotating 90 degrees each time and then casting directly down
What
Essence is very big on "giant flashy narrative effect with no conditions attached", it is inherently a bit more gonzo than 3e
which actually vaguely cares about balance outside of solars
This is only reinforcing my dislike of Gets
Essence is being reinforced as "an equally complex and unbalanced system just in an equal number of different ways"
also Zeal is back
WHY
it is nearly as broken
now it is "you must beat the Solar by at least [essence+1] successes or they win, fuck you"
Who thought that was a good idea
What is zeal
I will say, I think it's funny that one way for solaroids to learn SMAs is to fight a sidereal who's mastered them many times
Just getting your ass handed to you until you pick up some tricks
old Zeal was "press button to succeed at a thing instantly, no ifs, no buts, ignores perfects"
in an edition revolving entirely around Perfect Defences
this didn't actually work because Perfect was not a keyword and there was a sidebar in core that said "if something says it beats a perfect, no it doesn't"
Zeal was widely decried as the greatest mistake in 2e's design
Which is saying something
anyway, I will not be playing Exalted: Essence
now back to the good edition, and I can't believe I'm saying this
I was looking at the stuff for Infernals in Essence and it was all ... extremely pigeonholed and specific
I do like how they condensed down most of the SMAs
they filed off the cool capstones on BOKL and totally mangled Scarlet-Patterned Battlefield Style, but the rest look good
otherwise, nah, not bothering with this
I am frustrated with how the writers seem to really want everyone to be a rebellious iconoclast antihero
that's now Gets, Infernals and much of Lunars
And Solars to an extent
I don't want to do that, I am world no. 1 Institutions fan, I want to work with all these fun social structures you've laid out for me to play in rather than blowing them up arbitrarily
I kinda really liked how 2e Infernals were weirdos and failures struggling with a changed and invigorated nature and an extremely strange new home and an insane boss
even if that means "I have started my own trade consortium and am now negotiating with the steadily breaking-up Realm"
And I know people didn't like "the Yozi pick people who failed to be cool and awesome" and thought it was dumb
I really liked that
But I thought it made thematic sense
it was a nice unique thing
and presented interesting hooks beyond SMASH SMASH SMASH
new infernals feel very, I don't know, "rebellion chic"
Because the yozi are overcome by a sense of their own failure
They're looking for people who are like them
"I'm rebelling!"
"why?"
there are plenty of good things to rebel against in Exalted but I would at least expect a better answer than "because it's what we do, and smashing power structures is Always Morally Correct"
And also insofar as it's a bad decision to choose failed heroes, uh. Yes, the yozi make incredibly illogical decisions because they're a collective geyser of mental illness.
As awful as they are Infernals gave me a sense of sympathy for the yozi
I always thought that was pretty cool, especially in contrast to Solars
They're in terrible, constant pain as a result of being mutilated in a way that was unthinkably cruel. They were not kind entities beforehand, but they probably didn't deserve what was done to them!
And because of that, they're kinda ... wacky and cruel in a way that makes me kinda sad?
And their choosing people who failed or even gave up feels very appropriate
Because they're both giving those people a second chance, but also dragging those people down with them.
good candidate for a sid sidequest actually
"gently nudge object X into hand Y, the intended transfer route was disrupted by two deebs having a fight and fucking up the road"
Heaven would be very happy to have an exaltation that was willing to be halfway predictable for destiny planning
I do think Lunars work well if you read them less as "rebels and iconoclasts" and more as "people who don't fit into the social order in some variable sense"
That could involve being a rebel or iconoclast
lunars also got the angle of carving out their own kingdoms
Yeah, now that they're Exalted, they can build their own damn social order
Which could be "everybody get the fuck outta my woods"
that's kind of an every-exalt-not-part-of-an-existing-kingdom thing tho
It feels a little more focused with Lunars for reasons I can't fully explain
yeah, but the Essence and 3e writeups do kind of lean into "angry rebel moon person from previously-oppressed group" because of the obvious juxtaposition with the Realm
rather than "glorious terrible beast-king (oh god how do I kingdom)"
which is more fun to me
A lot of the Elders tend more towards that second thing, though
Ma-Ha-Suchi is the big Elder who's got a specific fixation on being the worst >_>
A lot of the other Elders are just kinda kicking around or running societies
well, Raksi, Leviathan and MHS
so about half
Feather Drenched, Sublime Danger and what's-his-name from the Caul are either vibing or carrying on with the insurgent schtick (very successfully, in the case of the Caul)
Lillith is just sort of sitting in trees
People go ask her questions
"Mrs. Owl,"
(She will not tell you how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop)
(It is forbidden knowledge)
I do really want to make a Sid who can kick the ass of Feather Drenched at some point
I think Feather is cool as hell and also I want to kill her and take her really salty sapient sword
(which doesn't even like her, it still wants to be the sword of her solar husband, but they have made a rough peace on the grounds that killing sids is fun)
who
one of the Lunar elders in Many-Faced Strangers
used to be friends with the Sids and hang out in Yu-Shan until they Usurped her husband and she barely got away
now she has many defining ties of Fuck Sids
and a sword that does this
heavens are already red baby it's real Mars hours
(her statblock isn't that choppy, I think you could very plausibly take her down with a decent combat Sid, but she's smart and sneaky and a walking anti-fate ECCM device so the usual "follow around until you can drop a huge prophecy" techniques won't help)
having fun playing pranks on my group by abusing the trust they've placed on me
amazing
what's Ligier's deal btw
is that the Green Sun himself
don't think he's been extensively covered in 3e yet so if you go off 2e yea
but ligier can also separate away from the actual green sun as a human shape
his human form is a beautiful green-eyed man, usually with four arms because Malfeas does not have a complex relationship with the Unconquered Sun, no sir
hmmmmmm
(Malfeas another name for him? or the general name for Hell, or something else?)
Malfeas is both the name of Hell itself (the great brass and basalt dyson-sphere city that Ligier sits in the middle of) and the king of the Yozis
he used to be Theion, the Empyreal Chaos, the most powerful primordial, until the Exalted overthrew him, slew half his soul, turned him inside out and bound his many siblings and their sub-souls inside him
in the process turning him into Malfeas
Ligier is Malfeas' "fetich soul", the first among his third circle demons
he used to have two, but one was slain in the Divine Revolution
"primary avatar of Malfeas", yeah
who is himself a whole person
primordials are like corporations
a primordial is too big to fit in one soul - they have a number of Third Circle Demons, who are all aspects of themselves
(somewhere between 7 and 20-odd)
each Third Circle likewise has seven sub-souls, the Second Circles
and then second circles form First Circles as tools and agents, rather than soul-shards proper
this rules
third circles are disgustingly powerful, like "equals a max level solar in their specialty" powerful
even for the few Solars who can cast Summon Third Circle, the advice is usually "don't"
second circles are generally around mid-level celestial exalt strength, although there are outliers and they vary in specialty - the master craftsdemon is not going to fight great
tbc, Malfeas the demon realm and Malfeas the primordial are the same entity
When the Solars bound the defeated primordials, they kinda used their own bodies to construct their prison
If that sounds not great
You're right!
note: you can't fight the actual primordial with a sword, they're too big and too abstract - a primordial is the entire boss level on/in which you fight their sub-souls, to use a videogame metaphor
this is probably a good thing because Ligier is one of the dozen most lethal beings in existence on his own
The primordials are essentially a group of unshaped raksha (unthinkably powerful, ambiguously defined quasi-beings of pure chaos) who decided, "hey, what if we got together, stabilized our concepts, and used those to build an existence?"
This was the first and most critical mistake
metaphysically, "these beings are too big to fit in one soul" is actually not too odd for Creation - humans have two souls, exalts have (effectively) three
Yeah, they take a bit from Chinese folklore there
if you kill all the Third Circles of a primordial (truly kill, with Exalted soul-destroying magic) fast enough, the primordial has no time to change its nature and produce new souls and ?DIES?
this is how you produce the Neverborn
I really like this writeup of what a neverborn is so I just link it every time
Notably, when the Primordials invented death, they did not invent a mechanism for Primordial death
So they kinda clog the drain
killing a primordial produced a kind of metaphysical divide by zero error and broke reality
And the result is the Underworld
Maybe stabbing the fundamental pillars of reality in the face as the first recourse was a mistake
a few of the half-constituted third circles of the dead primordials, ghosts of ghosts, roam the depths of the underworld as the Hekatonkhires, some of the mightiest of spirits
if you're a good enough necromancer, you can summon one
(Don't do this)
tbf a couple of their siblings (gaia and autochthon) sided with the gods and exalts because they were tired of the other Primordials bullying them
I do love that Gaia is just out on business surfing in the Wyld, trying to answer certain fundamental questions that have popped up in the intervening period
Autobot has done some pretty drastic soul-surgery on himself at this point, he's probably the strangest primordial
also one of the weakest, which puts things in perspective considering he's literally an entire setting
"Where is the goddess of the Earth? She's in space."
the one Hekaton that has stats is an Essence 8 zombie-manse, basically the Dreg Heap from DS3 that got up and turned itself into an engine of death
it's not an actual soul-husk but it's on the same level
incredible
it's incredible how exalted is simultaneously one of the settings I most want to make a necromancer in and least want to make a necromancer in
3e necromancy is really quite good
lots of gems in there, especially at the higher levels
🤔
Is it possible to make a fucked-up death scientist who's Fabius Bile-ing their way into the rotting corpses of the primordial sludge and have it be decent to play
(is Arms of the Chosen good or is it still in the Questionable Solar Design era)
It's good when it's general and a bit boring when it's just a thing for solars
that's Average Daybreak Caste, yeah
I play one, although he's more Evil Faux-Elven Guildmaster
Yes, I am indeed familiar with Crimsonibimbor
so for a non-Solar campaign, it's a worthy resource?
There's some really busted artifacts like Mela's Coil in there, I'd probably vet each artifact on a case by case basis
iiii do not trust myself to know what's busted
Asking here is a good move
Noted
Generally I'd chuck out anything that has a bunch of "this enhances X solar charm"
Which is design that's very largely been moved away from
balance of AOTC is a little wonky, but it's good for inspiration and has some decent ones
the best artifacts, IMO, are in the Abyssal and Sid books, plus Many-Faced Strangers
the fun thing about Ex3 Necromancy is that it's much more grounded than some of the sorcery
sorcery lets you pick your servants out of the prearranged list, for necromancy you're binding particular ghosts and constructing necrotech golems with your own two hands and eventually designing unique binding rituals for use on one particular horrible abomination
and then occasionally you get to threaten someone with, and I quote "applying thirteen kilomotes of sorcerous unlight directly to your dome"
Note that Heirs of the Shogunate has a ton of rock-solid Dragon-blood oriented artifacts
There's a flaming hoverboard
You can use the flaming hoverboard as a thrown weapon
While riding it
BASED
Arms is definitely still in the era of "hmmmmm" but it has some compelling stuff
Stormcaller is aggressively cool as a concept
still funny that the best deeb combo with stormcaller is endlessly looping water aura by drawing it to start a purely aesthetic storm and spending 1 mote to stay dry in the rain
or at least the most accessible deeb combo with stormcaller
I had some dumb combos with my stormcaller deeb
You can sheathe stormcaller as part of the melee fire flurry
It's how he could judgement cut end
Bayle...
I HEREBY VOW YOU SHALL RUE THIS DAY
what are the bits from Crucible of Legend that should be regarded as like, retcons to the 3e core book
i remember that either Projects or Crafting got a good makeover
there are optional replacement crafting rules but they didn't replace the charmset so it's altogether a lot more work to use them than it is to bootleg your own patch
hmmm okay
there's alternate chargen that unifies Bp and XP
needs some tweaking for non-solaroids but it's 'you can whip up the rules in ten minutes' tier
welp, I have found myself finishing a writeup of everything but the charms for the chosen of the god of warstriders, lol
Fun!
Chosen of Charkaid, God of Warstriders Charkaid has not had a great millenia, despite being (arguably) one of the most powerful divinities in the Bureau of War. He is the God of Warstriders, patron of the god-machines and the exalts who pilot them. His machines marched to war a thousand times si...
Oooh, interesting
what would Jagganoth be in Exalted
Abyssal.
Is heaven and earth shaking tred only when you attack? Or can you use it to tank hits?
As it feels a bit overpriced for the former. 5 motes, 1 wp is a fair bit for a single attack to hit Legendary Size normally/ignore the warstrider penalty on one attack.
Oh, it's meant to be used both offensively and defensively, I'll clarify that
See Jagg feels too Big Huge to be an exalt
evil sunboss
locking in on Juche as the home turf of this campaign i think
👀 House Nellens?
What's their deal again? It's been ages since I learned all that houses
They're the Patrician House. They have very few dragonb looded compared to the other great houses, and their house is lead by a council of mortals instead of a dragonblooded matriarch. Their founder, Nellens, was a mortal, one of Her Redness' favored concubines and father of several other house founders.
Ah! Yes, okay
ah, sorry,e xcuse me; the council has dragonblooded on it including the house matriarch, but the mortals on it have equal voices
but yeah, Nellens fathered Sesus, at the very least, and I think at least one other house founder
Does it have an elemental tendency?
he was a politician before he was a consort, part of the deliberative's lesser chamber, and was very vocal about mortal rights in the realm
nope! No elemental tendency at all, and their dragonblooded often suffer from low breeding and generative essence
this is also their house mon.
it might look familiar!
This is assuredly a coincidence
They own department stores?
hmmmmmmm
lmao
I mean they do they're one of the more mercantile houses but
anyway i'm not saying Nellens was one of the anathema I'm just saying that if it wans't for the fact that house nellens is one of the mroe faithful houses of the realm when it comes to the Immaculate Order there might be questions asked very uncomfortably
Just to make sure, DBs in 3e don't have anything that makes charms of other elements work less efficiently for them, right?
no
Couldn't find anything but I wanted to check if I was missing something
except when you go bonfire you enter your aspect's elemental aura and can't use any other
It's just a situation of Managing Your Aura, so if you keep mixing elements it can get a bit awkward.
Oh! I did miss that
The dragon styles of course being the answer to having combat charms that mix with one's bonfire aura
yea if your main combat trick is your aspect's immaculate art this becomes more of a boon than anything
Some charms require you to expend aura of a specific element, iirc?
yes
or have a duratin of (appropriate aura)
essentially it's easier to operate within your own element's aura but you don't get super extra penalized outside of it
Virescent Eyes of Division
There are few who can say they have fought a master of Albicant Sepulcher of Extinction and survived. There are even fewer who can claim they have stood within the tombs of the Neverborn themselves. The Green Lady is the only one among the living who can claim both. A relatively recently created Sidereal Martial Art, Virescent Eyes of Division is a rejection of the bleak focus on Oblivion over eternal pain that Albicant Sepulcher of Extinction preaches and a reinforcing of the true nature of Endings. That even as hope and love must one day fade, so must pain and heartbreak. It speaks of endings not merely as a cruel loss but as a step in an eternal cycle. A tyrant must be cast down so that people may be free and sickness must fade so that one can be well.
Students of Virescent Eyes of Division learn this style among sickhouses and unrest, watching the final moments of many and gaining an understanding that not even an ending is eternal. They must internalize that even the most painful wound will eventually fade and the greatest heartbreaks will be one day gone. They are taught bladework that can pick at the threads that hold together reality, hastening the ending of cruelty and bringing fated judgement to its targets early.
Virescent Eyes of Division Weapons: Virescent Eyes of Division cannot be performed unarmed, requiring a blade for its practice. It makes use of knives, short swords, slashing swords and greatswords in graceful cutting motions, snipping the threads of the physical and the metaphysical easily.
Armor: This style is compatible with light and medium armour.
Complementary Abilities: Practitioners of this style require exceptional Awareness to spot the correct thread to cut.
Nature: Flowing
This read okay for a Sidereal Martial Art?
Yeah, I like it
Ooh, nice
I almost feel like it could be another 'flowing or still' style? Unsure of the balance of that given we don't have gets yet but
Styles usable with tiger claws: Centipede, Falcon, Tiger, Ebon Shadow, Hungry Ghost, Rat, Water Dragon
That's a pretty solid list of them.
Currently trying to brainstorm things for this SMA. SMAs don't really have any 'basic functionality' intro stuff (Outside of the 'I do everything' prismatic.) XD
Pondering water dragon or fire dragon for a DB
Fire can more comfortably get a lot of fighty stuff outside of martial arts, but afaict the only other martial art that uses short swords is VBOS?
Oh I guess steel devil ( 🤢 ) and thousand blades too
Water on the other hand can be used with all of that
And fire and water are both styles I like
iirc, water is the better 'all around' style, with fire very powerful but also very focused on a specific way of fighting.
The vibe I'm going for with this SMA is 'You are so good at cutting that you can cut and kill the immaterial, not just the material'.
It shouldn't be an entry charm but one I know I want is:
Target a guy with a special gambit. If you succeed, you cleave one of his charms of your choice from him. He can't use it and it's effects end if they're currently ongoing. They can re-develop the lost charm after the scene but it's gone for the rest of the scene.
what does redevelop mean here
Regain usage of it again. Fluffwise, they're having to re-learn how to do it again (But very quickly since they did know how to do it in the past)
There's also a fairly compelling pair of short daiklaves that make fire aspects much better at stealth and assassination type of stuff
Hmm. Scout, Defender, Duelist, Artillery, Command? That feel like a good set of five 'archetypes; of warstrider?
I'm remembering correctly that Steel Devil barely functions, right?
As I understand it, yeah.
Targedy
Seems fine, yeah. I'd maybe add an option for going Eva 01 but that's just a vague pondering.
Eh, there's already an Eva-01 warstrider, though I could do something like that prrrobably in War?
Fair
it's really good at killing thingst aht can't negate onslaught penalties easily and nothing else
And since 'a way to negate onslaught penalties' is a fundemental aspect of 'doing exalted combat'...
What book was Thousand Blades in, again?
my favorite part is that it can only be used with paired identical shortswords which you think would make it a style with some clash-focused stuff but it's actually like. actively antisyngergistic with clashing. cause double and triple attack don't work withi clashes
many faced stranger
Warstrider that summons a copy of whatever artifact you are interred with
I could maybe fit that as a craft charm...?
...in 3e does Deathlord Immortality beat Ghost-Eating Technique?
Or is that one of those 'Solars win' situations?
it's what they used to kill primordials so like probably
ghosts can kill other ghosts by default (I think?) and a deathlord died to being suplexed through stygia's royal palace and came back, so
same case for all celestial exalts' respective kill spirit charms tho
Pondering for that SMA. I know I want to give them a classic 'Just perma-kill a spirit', as Sids surprisingly lack a basic version of that (Having to use Terminal Sanction for it), though with a twist on it.
If this incapacitates the target, their upper soul immediately passes into Lethe. In addition, their lower soul will not rise as a Hungry Ghost. Beings who would not pass into Lethe when killed (Such as Gods, Dragon Kings or Jadeborn) are still affected this way, being spun into a human life for their next reincarnation to better understand life through human eyes before their native form of reincarnation reasserts itself.
not all ghosts survive getting killed by default, it's a case by case basis
gods: always regenerate as long as they have even the slighest cult
demons: only 2nd and 3rd circle
ghosts: maybe if it's cool
I feel like in ex3 fully killing the deathlords requires having the neverborn not reincarnate them for one reason or another
mostly because with how fucked up neverborn-reincarnation makes them, that makes a like
tension in 'do I kill the deathlord or do I imprison them forever'
It does give a big thing on 'The deathlords know there is a bane that can stop them coming back and their terrified of it'
'if I kill them they might come back WORSE'
yeah but if the bane is an occult 3/essence 1 charm it kinda doesn't have much narrative spice
And I feel like 'A solar' is a bit too basic a bane for it to be an Entire Plot Point.
3e ghost killing charms is pretty equivalent across the board for exalts that have it, it's not specific to solars
terminal sanction is a solid sidegrade. lunars got the whole 'i eat you' thing going on. deebs struggle with it but they can put you in a rock
Pokeball Faffle
Ooh, something that could be fun: fire dragon + thousand blades using both Eska's Fangs (the set of six short daiklaves from AotR), and the fancy assassin short daiklaves from the DB book
But yeah, this is designed to be an interesting sorta alternate to 'I can Perma-Kill A Spirit' for the SMA. Not that big a deal for a solar trying to get into it but for sids it gives them a Less Hoops alternative to Terminal Sanction. Does it seem like an interesting concept?
I like it!
I don't think you should specify if it can kill a deathlord or not since I don't think any other ghost-killing charm does
Yeah, I ended up making the list of examples 'Gods, Dragon Kings and Jadeborn' instead of bringing them up.
Maybe also/eventually grab VBOS
Question: if an elemental dragon martial artist expends their aura to ignore terrestrial limits, and then activates a charm with a duration, do the terrestrial limits stay deactivated on that charm, or do they start again on the next tick?
I'm guessing they start again
But my optimism knows no bounds
unless there's RAW that says otherwise I'd say it'd last for the duraiton of the charm
this is Exalted, you get to Do Cool Things
It's a very potent martial art.
That's just a scene-long effect you're putting on top of your form charm!
Wild stuff
Very exthpensive douglath
At chargen, yeah.
artifacts cost 0 dots if you're quick enough
Well, at least 6 for artifacts unless you're being really silly
Nah, don't need that
you don't need the MA merit for it
It's what inspired me to make one of my MA require Thaumaturgist rather than MA. XD
you just need to be THE LORD OF INFINITE SWORDS
Potentially as little as 3 dots
(I will never stop stanning Anima as Exalted's insane spanish cousin)
