#Arkham Horror: The Card Game

#

Yeah, Greed is basically going to be a testless "take 3 horror" with how low you'll typically be running

mortal hazel
#

There's a few different ways to build Bob, for sure, but you usually want to be making money positive every turn if you can

#

Or at least neutral

dapper moon
#

True. The idea is only to use compass if I've already Short Supplied Greed

wispy phoenix
#

Right, but then that's one of your few ways to get those Investigates passed gone as well

#

If you can't use it

#

Like...okay, for reference

dapper moon
#

Keys and Lantern are my backup there

#

And matches were going to be but.... taboo and stuff.

wispy phoenix
#

A typical shroud of a location is 3. Your base book is 4, and if you're lucky, you'll have PMT to boost by +1, maybe you're using the Compass or Fox Mask to go to 6

dapper moon
#

(Fox to 7, if PMT)

wispy phoenix
#

On Standard, the biggest starting token is -4. Even with those boosts, your'e still failing some 10, 15% of the time, and that's assuming you have those cards out, unexhausted, and charged

#

On top of that, your Scavenging rate is not great either

mortal hazel
#

Hrm, scrolling up to look at that deck, I think, as a rule of thumb, if you have more than five hand assets, you ought to know exactly what you're doing

wispy phoenix
#

There's pieces there, but the engine is lacking in grease and refinement

mortal hazel
#

This one has twelve

wispy phoenix
#

Mhm

#

They can be sold off to other Investigators, but that needs Bob's sig

dapper moon
#

12?

wispy phoenix
#

Oh, isn't it 8?

dapper moon
#

Cut to 7, if PMT is counted as a duplicate, and I've got Toolbelt, assuming it can either start in hand or discard for Scavenging to snag

mortal hazel
#

Oh, I looked at the post earlier

#

Oh yeah that's a lot better

dapper moon
#

Oh yeah

wispy phoenix
#

Anyway - getting down to real brass tacks here, my overall thought is that you're still going to need to slim your assets down by a lot

#

By a lot I mean 8 or 9

#

Not all Arkham decks need like, some kind of silly engine that does 20 things in one turn. But I think the base requirements for a deck to run smoothly boil down to Draw, Money, Boosts

#

You want to see important cards, you want the resources to play them, you want to boost your stats up in order to beat the bag

#

Assets are cool and all, but particularly in the case of ones that provide actions, they're typically only providing No. 3, and even then it might only be situationally

dapper moon
#

In order of what I would cut to drop 8:
Ok With: Track Shoes, Scrapper, Compass, Cig Case OR Rabbit's Foot, Switchblade, Fox Mask, Lantern
Prefer Not: Bandages, Thieves,

wispy phoenix
#

If you grease the deck with more Draw, more Money, and more Boosts, it'll operate a lot smoother and more efficiently. I can give you suggestions of what to cut or put in

dapper moon
#

What would you sub in to get more money/draw? (Manual Dexterity and Perception being obvious options)

wispy phoenix
#

Cut: Lantern, Derringer, Compass, 2x Tool Belt, Scrapper, Switchblade, Thieves' Kit, Track Shoes
Put In: 2x Perception, 2x Lockpicks (1), 2x Take Heart, 2x Faustian Bargain, Backpack

dapper moon
#

That does mean I lose any ability to fight or flee until I get XP to buy Shotcaster with Gun Mode

wispy phoenix
#

Your ability to do either was always going to be really limited, unfortunately

#

Derringer puts you at 5 Fight, which isn't cutting it against anything but things that are particularly weeny

dapper moon
#

But not 0

#

True, but I was not intending to shoot at the very very big stuff

wispy phoenix
#

Sure, but you also have a dedicated monster handler on the team

dapper moon
#

mm, true.

wispy phoenix
#

As the amount of players goes up, there's more room for specialization - you don't need to be able to do everything

dapper moon
#

Mm, true.

wispy phoenix
#

And if you swing for a flex play, you're much better off swinging for something big that has a splashy effect

dapper moon
#

I've just had really bad experiences with only having 1 person able to fight at all

wispy phoenix
#

eg. Blur

wispy phoenix
#

A badly built fighter or one that gets screwed or draw can be really bad

#

But a well built one is a machine

dapper moon
#

Hmm, I may reconsider my deck. Let it percolate at least till tomorrow. Depending on what Alaen end s up with may also influence me here

wispy phoenix
#

Sure thing, no problem

#

Hope that all helped, Hades

dapper moon
#

Yeah

mortal hazel
#

Bob can fight, but it does require fairly elegant deckbuilding, and probably heavy reliance on Well Connected or High Roller (in addition to a high-modifier weapon like the Derringer, Lupara, or upgraded Bulldog)

dapper moon
#

I don't need bob to fight boss monsters or elites. I want to either be able to kill or evade diff 3 creatures with some degree of reliability

#

Like slotting 1 copy of Azure Flame or Withering into a purple deck. Not a fight everything option but a "I can handle this mook* option

proven acorn
wispy phoenix
proven acorn
#

yeah the Pilfer I was considering cutting
curious why Blackmail File specifically?

wispy phoenix
#

Consistent, one action enemy management

#

It's a stall, but it's a very good one

proven acorn
#

hmm, fair enough

wispy phoenix
proven acorn
#

Also true
I'm mostly banking on recurring the parley events with Eldritch Tongue

#

And getting to also committ them via Crystallizer

wispy phoenix
#

Do note that if you put your events under Crystalizer, you can't recur them until after you commit them to a test

#

Since they only go to discard at that point

wispy phoenix
#

@proven acorn @dapper moon are y'all aware of TCU's beginning gimmick?

proven acorn
#

the prologue, right?

wispy phoenix
#

Yeag

#

We can hopefullyyyy power through both it and scenario 1?

dapper moon
#

nvm, figured out how to search for bonded cards

#

@wispy phoenix what do you think of Ravenous Myconid?

wispy phoenix
#

You have unfortunately hit upon another card I think is very busted, haha

dapper moon
#

oh no

#

Well darn

wispy phoenix
#

The upgrades are all jacked as fuck, with the Treachery cancelling one being probably one of the best cards in the game

dapper moon
#

I kinda want to include it in a Mandy Cluever Deck

wispy phoenix
#

Yeah it's just kinda like, one of the cards that just means you don't need to play the game in some circumstances

dapper moon
#

Oh, I just realized what it is.... It Christopher Milan part 2

#

"Get money for Investigating Good"

#

(The base version)

wispy phoenix
#

Even the baseline Sentient Specimen version is nuts, its a Ward 1/round, and there's ways to abuse it with Shroud reduction to cancel every treachery investigators at a 0 Shroud location draw

#

And yeah it's just uh

#

Too much

#

I expect the next taboo to slam the fuck out of it

#

Deservedly

dapper moon
#

@proven acorn you want to go Alessandra and I'll ring up a Mandy Deck to search decks and get clues. Bob was not quite working out how I wanted.

high kindle
#

I have a house rule I usually run where we ban delve and obol

#

and just give everyone +1 xp every second scenario

#

and I think it generally plays a lot better

dapper moon
#

What do we think of Refine?

high kindle
#

I think the other xp cards are less problematic

#

refine is very awkward

#

pelt can be too

#

my issue is that delve kinda deflates the tension of missions at the end

#

and encourages all sorts of weird playpatterns where people have to get out except one person that does it totally safely

#

I think the card would be interesting as a dillemma

dapper moon
#

Something like Reverse Read the Stars?

#

Shuffle a big, angry monster worth 1xp into the top 10 or something?

high kindle
#

no like

#

when you draw delve

dapper moon
#

oh!

#

It fires immediately

#

That'd be interesting

high kindle
#

choose: exile delve too deep OR everyone draws an encounter and put it in the victory display

#

the issue is that its just always used with total safety on the last actions of easy missions

#

so it slippery slopes campaigns both ways

#

if you get ahead you all get +2 a mission, if you struggle you get nothing and have dead cards

#

similar issue with obol, plus the question of what to do when someone actually does die with it

wispy phoenix
#

Basically kills the greed problem

dapper moon
#

m, I would maybe have it trigger if the card is in your hand at start of turn?

#

Instead of when Drawn

wispy phoenix
#

I think that takes away the bite of it

#

You need to have it be a distinct risk and a hard choice

dapper moon
#

Fair enough

#

I would just hate to draw it with Upkeep

high kindle
#

I mean if you get it during turns it can be worse

#

dump enemies on people and stuff

#

but yeah I think it should have real bite

wispy phoenix
#

Yeah that would be real rough, but like

#

If you take the greed card, you accept the consequences of said greed

dapper moon
#

Fair enough

high kindle
#

I think it was a silly card always but early arkham needed it

wispy phoenix
#

Dunwich was uh

high kindle
#

it was pretty tough and dunwich was harsh on xp

dapper moon
#

Dunwich T^T

wispy phoenix
#

Yeah, you got pretty nickel and dimed

high kindle
#

and the general card quality was pretty low early on

#

you had to really make do with some bad cards

wispy phoenix
#

Not even bad in a fun way really

#

They were just shonky

high kindle
#

I mean sometimes it was fun

#

I definitely enjoyed it in its own way

wispy phoenix
#

Thats fair!

high kindle
#

but the silly xp card was less of an issue then

#

nowdays decks are very strong and you can do it very reliably

dapper moon
#

I think I'll go Mystic and look to pick up cards to move damage/horror and otherwise shore up allies with this deck

#

Maybe also snag Open Gate

#

idk how big Circle maps tend to be

dapper moon
#

Well, Mandy is here to do silly things.

#

65 card deck? Apparently

wispy phoenix
#

I would highly not recommend Forced Learning for your first time playing Mandy, you're gonna be pretty miserable

#

Also, Knowledge is Power was chained to be a 2XP card

#

So you can't include it, unfortunately

dapper moon
#

pain.

#

It won't be my first time Mandy, just my first time non-solo Mandy

#

(Solo Mandy is the definition of Miserable)

#

... Emperical Hypothesis is 1 in play. not 1 in deck, isn't it?

wispy phoenix
#

That's correct

dapper moon
#

What would you trim if you were removing Forced Learning?

wispy phoenix
#

Cut: 2x Fieldwork, 2x Chemistry Set, 2x Knowledge is Power, 2x Tempt Fate, 2x The Truth Beckons, 2x Forbidden Tome, 2x Drain Essence, 2x Forbidden Tome

#

Oop Tome is there twice

dapper moon
#

Can I ask why Forbidden Tome?

wispy phoenix
#

Meant to be "Throw The Book At Them"

wispy phoenix
#

What is its eventual role in your game plan

dapper moon
#

Because FT (Dark Knowledge) is an easy solution for post-flip Hank Healing

wispy phoenix
#

I very much appreciate your concern, but I promise you I'll be okay on that front

dapper moon
#

Oh, ok, in that case, totes can cut

wispy phoenix
#

I have the two best soak allies in the game on tap

dapper moon
#

Is the reason to Cut Fieldwork because it's kinda doubled up with Mouse? or is there another reason I'm missing?

wispy phoenix
#

Its just a heavily ancillary card you don't need, really

dapper moon
#

oh, doubly so without Chem Set

wispy phoenix
#

Mandy's 50 card deck really wants you to run a core set of cards with some level of redundant backups, buoyed by fast cards, research cards and draw

dapper moon
mortal hazel
#

Generally a slimmer deck is a stronger deck

#

Mandy was locked at 50 to nerf her

#

The thicker the deck, the harder it is for her to find the things she wants

#

Forced Learning in general is a card you should only pick up if you know exactly what you're doing, as it makes all the draw and search in your deck weaker, and reduces the density of your high value cards, especially as you gain XP

wispy phoenix
#

I actually made a Mandy deck myself a while back and played it through a campaign, Hades, do you mind if I show you? I can guide you through my thought processes, if you'd like

mortal hazel
#

After three years of playing Arkham as investigators of every class, talking about Arkham with other, even more experienced card gamers, and winning nearly every campaign and every scenario on higher difficulties even when playing them unspoiled, usually with fairly experimental, gimmicky decks, I've still not really found a home for Forced Learning

#

Seekers kinda hate it because they already have great draw and search and very little recursion or use-from-discard cards

#

Survivors could like it but only Darrel and Pete have access to it, and of those, well, Darrel is a seeker, too, and Pete... I've tried to make it work pretty extensively with Pete, but it's tough, because a lot of use-from-discard stuff isn't compatible with Duke

dapper moon
#

I'll post my questions as a singular big chunk, if that's ok?

wispy phoenix
#

Go for it

dapper moon
#
  1. Why no Book of Lore?
  2. Do you have enough econ to ignore Milan?
  3. You have a lot of 2x, is there a reason to skip Dream-Enhancing?
  4. You have 7 hands worth of assets (4 if you ignore dupes). What is the plan there?
  5. Would you recommend going into Rogue, considering the Monster Fighter and Parley Master we already have in the party?
  6. Were there any cards you were disappointed with or disliked in this list?
wispy phoenix
# dapper moon 1. Why no Book of Lore? 2. Do you have enough econ to ignore Milan? 3. You have ...
  1. Old Book of Lore is extremely action intensive if you want it generate value and your name isn't Daisy. During initial play, I simply did not have the time to do small value searches every turn, it's not worth it until you get high octane action compression like Archaic Glyphs (Guiding Stones) and Pathfinder
  2. Easily; the deck doesn't run expensive, but still has 10 cards worth of highly efficient econ regardless
  3. I have never found DES to be worth it, and the odds of hitting dupes are even less in a 50 card deck than a 30 card one despite the Myriads
  4. I don't intend to have them all in play at once; the Scrolls and Memoirs are ephemeral, then once they're gone mag glasses or the Lexicon give consistent value. They all provide useful redundancy
  5. yes, imo, Rogue is imo Mandy's best subclass due to the overall compression it provides that she desperately wants
  6. Maybe the Lexicon but that's about it
dapper moon
#

Ok, thank you. I'll probably cut up the deck a little further and see what I get. Thank you

wispy phoenix
#

No problem, happy to help

mortal hazel
#

Adding onto the above:

  1. I'd say Old Book of Lore can be worth it if you very specifically build around it, specifically if you're planning on building around Abigail Foreman + the Raven Quill and/or Knowledge is Power, but beyond that, the value is just kinda low
  2. DES can be incredibly potent but much moreso for a small deck than a big one. Pre-taboo Mandy could include it as part of an incredibly overpowered package, as could many other Seekers. If you can make DES work for Mandy these days, that probably means you're doing something very weird and absurd and are planning to be useless for ten turns then perform infinite actions and win in one.
  3. Rogue, if nothing else, provides a lot of very good economy for Mandy. Mandy is the reason a lot of Rogue 0-1 cards got taboo'd, but there's still a lot of good and efficient stuff there. These days Seekers have enough healing and encounter deck management and stuff that Mystic doesn't add much. There's an argument for Survivor, but I'd also lean towards Rogue, yeah.
  4. wrt; Lexicon, the absolute certainty of it is nice, it works nicely with very high-draw (as opposed to search) decks, but yeah a lot of the time Seekers would prefer various events for enemy management. (i know the Lexicon technically works through events, but yanno what I mean.)

#

But I'm not confident

wispy phoenix
#

Are we kicking off soon?

proven acorn
#

I'm here yeah

wispy phoenix
#

yippee

#

Hades is in SSC, I'll be there shortly

dapper moon
#

Tis indeed my router. I told it to restart and it decided to also update then

mortal hazel
wispy phoenix
#

Pete and Jess Dream Team

proven acorn
#

We had some awful luck this scenario

wispy phoenix
#

shockingly bad!

#

Like wow

#

@proven acorn @dapper moon If y'all want to substantially change your decks or even change your gator, in my games we typically allow people to do that after scenario 1

#

But not after

proven acorn
#

I think I'm good as is
deck worked mostly as expected

wispy phoenix
#

I think my deck worked well aside from the parts where I just got completely shit on by token pulls

proven acorn
#

yeah, awful luck with the autofail

#

and how you drew Rotting Remains like five times

dapper moon
#

I think I need more search effects? Not sure

wispy phoenix
#

yup, and you have just the card to do it with

#

Uses (4 secrets).
[fast] During a skill test at your location: The performing investigator may search the top 3 cards of their deck for a card that can be committed to this test. You may spend 1 secret to commit that card. Shuffle the performing investigator's deck. (Limit once per test.)

#

Mandy staple, every deck wants two of these ASAP

proven acorn
#

feel like I need something for Willpower, but not sure what I could get
maybe Moxie 3
though I still need to actually draw it too
though I have a good amount of committs from Crystallizer at least

wispy phoenix
#

Might want some Black Markets?

#

To help with draw

proven acorn
#

I was grabbing 2 Snitch so far, and then deliberating what to do with the last 3 XP

#

Black Market could be good

wispy phoenix
#

Black Market is such gas

proven acorn
#

got one Black Market
not much to do with the last XP for now
could upgrade 1 of my Lockpicks, but I think I'll just save it for now

dapper moon
#

@proven acorn @wispy phoenix both of you still looking good for Monday (or local equivalent)?

wispy phoenix
#

yeag

proven acorn
#

Yeah

dapper moon
#

I cast cookieyays

wispy phoenix
#

I am no longer good for Monday, argh

#

Is Sunday possible instead?

dapper moon
#

Sadly, I have a one-shot to run 😢

wispy phoenix
#

Is earlier or later viable?

dapper moon
#

Later, totally. Earlier presents a slight problem of being awake, but I could make it, if that is the only possible time(s)

wispy phoenix
#

Depends on Alaen, basically

dapper moon
#

(Should I ping.... or?)

mortal hazel
#

Is there any reason not to ping when it comes to scheduling stuff? @proven acorn

proven acorn
#

huh the ping didn't show up for me, weird

proven acorn
#

an hour or two later or so probably, because I do also have something else before that normally (though not this week)

wispy phoenix
#

Ogays

#

It's only for this week probably

wispy phoenix
proven acorn
#

well this week I'm probably good either way, since my game is cancelled this week

#

but if we had to in other week, about <t:1712455200:t> would be where I should be relatively definitely free

wispy phoenix
#

Easy

#

What about you, Hades?

proven acorn
#

if we're only switching days today, you two can probably just ping me when you're free today and it should be good

wispy phoenix
#

Ogays

wispy phoenix
#

@dapper moon thoughts on the above?

dapper moon
#

I will be occupied for probably the next 90-120 minutes, if starting then works I'd be down

wispy phoenix
#

2 hours from now sounds good

wispy phoenix
#

@proven acorn @dapper moon still good to go in about ~half an hour?

proven acorn
#

yep

wispy phoenix
#

I'm just waiting on some food atm

#

Hades is still running their one shot it seems, so I think I've got time

proven acorn
#

I'm ready, just chilling until Hades is here

wispy phoenix
#

Yup yup

dapper moon
#

HERE

#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn in IPS-N hangout

wispy phoenix
#

nice

wispy phoenix
proven acorn
#

not doing much this time
Vamp just seems like a good upgrade, means I can test against 0 with Fine Clothes

#

also I realized now that Alessandra can actually get Eye of Valusia

#

might be worth an inclusion later in the campaign as a boss fighting tool

wispy phoenix
#

Yup, its kinda neat

#

I'm just collecting early game consistency upgrades

proven acorn
#

yeah I also still need to round out my staples still

#

I want a second Chuck and probably upgrade both of them to 5 if possible

wispy phoenix
#

For sure

proven acorn
#

also still thinking of getting Moxie 3

#

for some extra Mythos protection

#

for an alternative weapon, I was also considering picking up Ornate Bow

wispy phoenix
#

Bow is definitely nice

dapper moon
#

I might.... Just grab deduction upgrades?

#

Unless there's an easy way to send my research events back to deck

exotic robin
#

if you're running big hand, Farsight is probably the only reasonably way to do it

#

but Deduction (2) is just kinda cracked

#

hello yes I would like a Pilfer that costs 0 resources

dapper moon
dapper moon
#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn
Everyone ready for ~6:30 tonight?

#

Er, or relevant time in your zone

wispy phoenix
#

yeag

mortal hazel
#

pretty quick once you get used to it

wispy phoenix
dapper moon
#

In 10ish minutes

#

<t:1713227400:d>

#

Nope, one sec

#

<t:1713227400:t>
@wispy phoenix

#

(bow dow dow dow, bow dow, bow dow can't touch this)

wispy phoenix
#

Cool cool, I may be a bit late since I need to eat

dapper moon
#

I will as well, as I need to find a file for my wife, apparently

dapper moon
#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn
Very sorry, I committed eepy and further what day it was

wispy phoenix
#

oh!!

#

oop

#

are we skipping today, then, or?

proven acorn
#

I'd prefer skipping this week now
getting a bit too late for me

dapper moon
#

Sorry :(

proven acorn
#

Np
We'll just pick up next week

wispy phoenix
#

All good!

dapper moon
dapper moon
#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn we good for monday [or applicable day for you] at the usual time? (I can grab the timestamp if needed)

proven acorn
#

should be good, yeah

wispy phoenix
#

Yup!

queen rune
#

starting The Devourer Below, looking forward to finish an arc

proven acorn
#

good luck on Devourer

wispy phoenix
#

Yeah good luck ||you will definitely need it||

queen rune
#

rusty, enemies with doom tokens on them put the doom token back into the box when they die right?

wispy phoenix
#

Yes

proven acorn
#

yeah doom only counts while a card is in play
if they are defeated/discarded the doom is removed

queen rune
#

more mechanics questions: if a monster has prey and no hunter tag, they don't move if there's no investigator in the location?

proven acorn
#

yes

#

but Prey is also only a tiebreaker if there would be multiple valid characters for engaging or Hunter

queen rune
#

ok good that i checked hunter tag cause the question i would have asked would be "hey if i failed disengage as first action against an opponent with prey, wouldn't it make no sense to try disengage using action two considering even if i moved away with action three, the monster re-engages from move right?"
but i guess the question is still valid for enemies with hunter?

proven acorn
#

Well if you Evade them, they are exhausted, and they only untap in the Upkeep phase after the Hunter trigger happens

queen rune
#

OH, that is the part i forgot to do

wispy phoenix
#

Which means they'll only ever auto engage the listed character

queen rune
#

ah

proven acorn
#

oh yeah, that is true

#

though I think that's mostly on some monster weaknesses

queen rune
#

dang

#

daisy died to grasping hands... due to a -2 token

proven acorn
#

rough

wispy phoenix
#

Oof

queen rune
#

wait hold... nvm she just got knocked out, didn't realize how death work

#

1 physical trauma tho (on top of one psychic... and this is only mission 3)

proven acorn
#

well Devourer Below is the last scenario of that campaign

queen rune
#

that's true

#

but man this is untimely

#

still only in act 1

proven acorn
#

Devourer Below is really tough

#

infamously so

queen rune
#

ah

#

engaged investigators are allowed to drag the enemies they're engaged with via moving and tanking the attack of opportunities right?

proven acorn
#

yeah

queen rune
#

and agendas only advance during mythos phase?

proven acorn
#

the agenda only advances when the doom is added in the mythos phase, yeah

#

or if a card explicitly says it can advance the agenda

wispy phoenix
#

There are exceptions, like if you draw doom placing encounter cards out of phase that explicitly state they can advance, yeah

proven acorn
#

this is why Ancient Evils can be so tough

queen rune
#

ok cool mine just adds more tokens than the agenda target so it's... accidentally fine?

#

for certain definitions of fine lmao

proven acorn
#

if something just adds extra doom tokens, that does give you an extra round to respond, yeah

#

unless you draw an encounter during upkeep somehow, which can happen

queen rune
#

merely chose to get punched by silver twilight acolyte during investigation phase since this is banks originally staying in a location with no clue and a whimpy enemy

#

note that bank also missed so.... calculated move but man am i bad at math

proven acorn
#

ah yeah

queen rune
#

whew, that rush of endorphin an elder sign reveal gives

#

shame it didn't do much flashy stuff, merely prevented bad thing

#

oh...

#

i was checkmated 4 turns ago...

#

setup had ||the healing location||, which means ||upon drawing cover up, i lose due to not having enough possible clues to turn in. which i did, 4 turns ago||

wispy phoenix
#

I don't quite understand

queen rune
#

i misread what Cover Up does, turns out.

proven acorn
#

Cover Up takes clues from the pool, yeah

#

not from you

queen rune
#

i thought i'd need to discard the clue from both the board and the card

#

whew

wispy phoenix
#

yeah

queen rune
#

alas, hit time limit, just gonna say this session never happened lmao

proven acorn
#

Devourer is very hard, especially if you didn't do perfectly in Midnight Masks already

queen rune
#

i am certainly sweating since i'm still on act 1 when the agenda went to 3

dapper moon
#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn we still on for <t:1715041800>?

proven acorn
#

yeah

wispy phoenix
#

yeag

dapper moon
#

Cool <3

dapper moon
#

90 minutes, yeah?

wispy phoenix
#

yup!

dapper moon
#

@wispy phoenix @proven acorn everyone still good for the usual time, usual suspects?

proven acorn
#

yep

wispy phoenix
#

In two days time? Yup

proven acorn
#

we fucking blitzed through the second half of Union and Disillusion
and cleared out all the victory locations to boot

#

things just really came together for a bit

wispy phoenix
#

alessandra good

proven acorn

wispy phoenix

You're missing a lot of staple cards that way unfortunately

queen rune

Ah

#

Lol wait even with dunwitch added into the pool, it's still too shallow for staples?

wispy phoenix
#

I mean, it is a pretty expansive game, tbf

queen rune
#

Fair

mortal hazel
#

Core + Dunwich works pretty well for Guardians and especially Seekers, some classic gamebreaking Seeker combos (if you play without taboo) only require Core + Dunwich, and even with taboo they're really solid.

#

Mystics and Survivors have basic functionality, but Survivors really came into their own with Carcosa, and Rogues... took a few more expansions

queen rune
#

No wonder Jenny felt the most underwhelming... Granted that's partially related to her flat statline

proven acorn
#

flat 3 statline is also pretty hard to make work

#

especially on a small cardpool

exotic robin
#

she's like, not the strongest Rogue ever, and Rogues only get like, functional in The Circle Undone

queen rune
#

yeah going in i didn't realize AH rewards specialization more than jack-of-all trades-ing

proven acorn
#

the small cardpool also just does you no favors
with the full pool you have a lot more tools to cover what you need, which does also matter a lot for some classes

dapper moon
#

If I've got a teammate who likes putting bless in the bag and even more so likes drawing it, is it worth taking Versatile on Daisy to grab Book of Psalms? It's an easy solution to Necronomicon horror, is a team-wide buff, and is generally a good card to have.

#

(From deck creation to be clear)

mortal hazel
#

From deck creation, if you wanted to be clever, you could take parallel daisy's deckbuilding and combine it with the original front. It may not be worth it to give up higher-level seeker and mystic cards for it, but it's a consideration.

#

Otherwise yeah if you build Daisy right, a 35 card deck is not hard to churn through

#

Though I usually just leave the Necronomicon in play since I'd rather spend three actions doing something else than clear it

dapper moon
#

Yeah, I was planning on (if I take Psalms) taking the "draw cards but add curse" event

dapper moon
dapper moon
exotic robin
wispy phoenix
#

Daisy can also take Astral Mirror if you're not running anything in your arcane slot

#

Which is both more hand slots and even more extra actions

#

Daisy has a glut of options here

proven acorn
#

the handslots reminds me of when Ace and me did Unspeakable Oath in Carcosa, and she as Daisy just spent nearly the entire scenario with the ||straitjacket|| in her threat area

Anyone have thoughts?

#

I was thinking about dropping something to grab healing word or medical text for a little bit of physical healing, but I'm not 100% sure.

wispy phoenix
#

Emergency Cache is pretty easily replaced with Burning the Midnight Oil, and you have room to include Crack the Case as well

#

Which pretty cleanly takes care of your econ

#

I'd also ditch Scientific Theory, which is similary just not a good card

dapper moon
#

I do need something for evade (played a teaching game tonight and got absolutely lampooned by the number of enemies that chose to jump me) so is there a cheap card you'd slot into the spot Scientific Theory leaves?

exotic robin
#

Cryptic Writings is a pretty solid option for Daisy - it's pretty reliable when you're searching 3 cards every turn

exotic robin
wispy phoenix
#

If you're in a 2p game you doooon't really need enemy management of your own unless things get really dire

wispy phoenix
#

Oh, that was not mentioned

dapper moon
#

Ah, sorry

exotic robin
#

Seekers also just have some cracked events to fight with Intellect that'll get an enemy off you

wispy phoenix

I'd either go "I've got a plan" or Transmogrify

exotic robin
#

Transmog is great

dapper moon
#

Note that I will have a(n) xp if I drop SciTheory

exotic robin
#

Daisy can also use Occult Invocation p well, she defo has the card advantage for it

#

Occult Lexicon is also. a decent option

wispy phoenix
#

Transmogrify needs some foresight to use, but it can hard shut down stuff with one action other stuff needs multiple to do

exotic robin
#

it's clunky, but testless

#

and Daisy has the hand slots to hold the book

wispy phoenix
#

yeah Lexicon is pretty sweet

dapper moon

@dapper moon @proven acorn I am unfortunately not good for game this week, can we move it to Tuesday?

dapper moon

Not easily. If we need to pass this week, that's ok, cause I don't have a lot of days where I'm free late enough to play

wispy phoenix

I can do Sunday as well if that works

dapper moon

I could do Sunday at T+4 hours from our usual start time

I could do Sunday later than our usual time, because Monday is a holiday fortunately

wispy phoenix

I'd be down for that

queen rune

#

||did we just misread this or miss something, or does the resolution on this one just basically not matter?||

#

no, that sounds about right

#

it's ||not a popular scenario,|| and people doing ironman challenges (play and win a campaign in a day) often ||just resign on turn one||

#

We decided to restart because Hades's internet was really poor, but before then ||we were on track for a Round 5 advance of Agenda 2||

proven acorn
#

thinking of making some starter decks for easing friends into learning the game a bit
I'll probably make one of each class, and let them choose
a bit unsure on some still, but currently my thoughts on picks are:
Guardian: Mark or Zoey (not sure if the self damage aspect of Mark is maybe a bit too much for beginners, and Zoey helps with econ on blue)
Seeker: Rex or Daisy (Rex feels a bit simpler, though Daisy has that 5 Int)
Mystic: Jacqueline
Rogue: Wini
Survivor: Stella or Pete (unsure if the fail forward suite with Stella is maybe a bit too unintuitive for newer players, and Pete can flex pretty well)

wispy phoenix
#

Oh I actually have some starter decks already made if you want em

#

My picks are actually identical to yours as well, lol

#

Zoey/Rex/Wini/Jacqueline/Pete

proven acorn
#

oh yeah true I could have just asked you for yours haha

#

I would appreciate those deck lists, yeah

wispy phoenix
#

Sure thing

astral flower
#

I recommend Pete for survivor

#

I myself started with Stella and failing forward was unintuitive

wispy phoenix
#

Yeah

#

The unfortunate thing with Survivors is, because they're the oddball class, there's no real good beginner option

#

I think Pete is good enough

#

But I feel a lot of the power in Survivor is in mechanics that are at least somewhat advanced

astral flower
#

Pete is good enough because you get instant setup with him at the start of the game

#

you can always contribute a little bit, you're never useless

#

But the gap between "contributes a little bit" Pete and "optimized" Pete is gigantic

Posted about the game(I was Rex) in card games and then was directed here

dapper moon
#

ooh, got a link to the deck?

formal depot
dapper moon
#

Interesting. Is there a big reason for the Scavenging include? I count 5 qualifying cards, all of which stick around without overwriting and no Short Supply

formal depot
#

I think its for the ice picks later

proven acorn
#

the Scavenging in that deck is mostly to set up for Ice Pick 3 later yeah

#

I just ran people through Gathering with some premade decks for now

#

think we can do Midnight Masks to get a taste for a more proper scenario, and then try for a real campaign

#

side note, it's always funny to me how generous Gathering is with XP
though I guess you need it for how short the core box is

dapper moon
#

Gotcha.

#

Yeah Scavenge -> Ice Pick(s) is a pretty good combo

proven acorn
#

On Rex especially, you can get to three clues fairly reliably

dapper moon
#

Oh yeah

#

And the fact that it can pick it up on the same check that tossed it is really good

#

Oh, real quick: What is the primary issue that people have with Deep Knowledge?

proven acorn
#

But that just means you do it every other one or try and cycle both of them when possible

dapper moon
#

Oh you right

proven acorn
#

It seems fine to me

#

Though Seeker has a lot of card draw options already

dapper moon
#

Uh, people recommended against it in my Blurse Daisy Deck

mortal hazel
#

In Daisy, it's mostly just that you don't remotely need it

#

It's better to just get your old book of lore or grim memoirs out as quickly and reliably as possible

dapper moon
#

Ah, I have played the deck twice now and I really appreciated it in both games when it came up

mortal hazel
#

If you specifically want to put curses in the bag, that's something else, though I'd probably go with Tempt Fate instead

proven acorn
#

Daisy does have OBoL yeah

#

Which gets you a lot of draw

proven acorn
dapper moon
#

Ah, I usually use the Book Action for Dream Diary, Psalms, or solving Archaic Glyphs (less so now that it's done)

#

I... could use Feed the Mind?

Or Empirical Hypothesis

proven acorn
dapper moon
#

I'm near positive that is true, but I have books I use a lot more. Notably, cause we're in Scarlett Keys (cw: things you face in early Keys) ||there's a lot of horror, so Book of Psalms is really good|| and the Essence of the Dream is really, really good

Look at this Photograph - Darrell Simmons Deck for a Forgotten Age Campaign as the Cluever
I'm not sure I like Long Shot and Medical Student here.
On Long Shot, I feel like I could grab a better skill from the Seeker category to buff investigating, but having the ability to chip in that extra damage feels really helpful
On Medical Student I'm not sure if there's a better option for a little healing and tankiness in Survivor, or a better option for Darrell's Ally slot.

#

Thoughts and feedback are appreciated

low osprey
dapper moon
#

Both, ig? Like, if there is feedback that is general but you wouldn't give knowing it's for forgotten age, avoid that, but all other advice is welcome

low osprey
#

Okay, so first I think I'd recommend literally any other accessory for Darrell aside from Rabbit's foot. I don't have any specific suggestions, but Darrell is not likely to fail a test every round, his ability makes that really hard to do unless you really really try to. I also think you have a lot of hand slot assets, and while I actually really like lantern, most of the other ones are things you want to keep around long term and that makes lantern a bit harder to use. I also don't think you want schoffner's catalogue and emergency cache, and being a survivor, that means you probably want to cut emergency cache since you can recur the catalogue

#

For forgotten age specific stuff, more movement would be good. Shortcut, for example. More soak also would be good. For that reason, I think you want another ally. I really like medical student, especially here, but you are likely to kill them quite quickly. As for long shot... I uh, I'm not sure. I like it a lot less in forgotten age, but it's really tempting. I have no idea if it's good

astral flower
#

You can also run take heart, as it draws cards

#

it's important to draw into your combo

#

I agree you should run another ally, milan is good

low osprey
#

You want Milan to stick around though

#

Which makes medical student a lot less helpful

astral flower
#

also, run short supply in a resourceful deck

#

that is probably also going to buy scavenging later

#

I think it's fine to just run 1 medical student, then if you draw it first, play it and let it die to one of the billion damaging treacheries TFA has then play milan after

#

if you draw and play milan first then draw medical student after you can commit it and it's just one dead draw

#

(you can also go down to 0 medical students if you really don't want dead draws, it's up to you)

low osprey
#

Oh! Bandages!

#

Take Bandages

astral flower
#

empirical hypothesis is limit 1 per gator, so don't run 2 copies. I think long shot is bad as serena mentioned

low osprey
#

Resourceful/scavenging makes them very good

#

Especially in forgotten age, which is going to forgotten age at you a bunch

dapper moon
astral flower
#

It's not 100% necessary and you don't want to draw the second copy ever

mortal hazel
#

It's not really different from having two copies of LCC pre-relic hunter

#

I do often go with just one Hypothesis, but I usually also make sure to have really good draw

astral flower
#

I think rogues are a lot more dependent on draw than Darrell is and also have more oversuccess tools, so it makes more sense to run 2 LCCs in them

exotic robin

#

proven acorn
#

Steady Handed could potentially help with Rogue oversuccess stuff too?

exotic robin
#

oh yeah

#

I've been kinda thinking it might be good for Trish

#

+1 on oversuccess stuff and horror healing

#

and getting it for cheap makes it have a really low opportunity cost

mortal hazel
#

Physical Training + Hyperawareness (or Streetwise) + Well Prepared + 1 composure of choice if you just wanted well-rounded stats, maybe

#

without basic Jenny's money stuff, pumping for stats on the regualr might be too expensive

#

And even with Well Prepared + another talent, you're going to have trouble testing at higher than 7

#

Lone Wolf being fast and free to play helps a bit

#

One issue is that nearly all useful talents cost XP

#

hmmm

#

Evade-Fighter might be the best shout

#

You do have True Grit and Something Worth Fighting For as potential soak options to cover for a Stylish Coat or composure

#

First Aid gets a bit better when played fast for 1 resource

#

Fieldwork... can help with early investigates, but gets a lot better if you can successfully combine it with Safeguard/Pathfinder

#

hmm

#

if you can get your intellect high enough (somehow), Burglary... might almost be worth a look. idk how you'd do that without magnifying glasses, though.

dapper moon

low osprey
dapper moon
#

Oh, ok. Is it nearly an auto-include in any Seeker deck? Or not quite that silly?

low osprey
#

I don't think I would say it's an auto include, since it costs xp and takes work to set up, but there are very few problems it doesn't solve with no effort

exotic robin
#

if you can find it and recharge it reliably then it's like... kinda busted?

low osprey
#

It can evade elites from anywhere with no actions, it can teleport you anywhere, it can get you clues

#

It used to not get removed when it was empty

#

Which, how could that have been printed like that?

mortal hazel
#

Though I guess it's kinda not too insane if you can't recharge it

#

It's actually at its strongest in Trish with Eldritch Sophist + Red Clock to give it infinite charges, and Trish can of course get double use out of it (or more, if you can find her a useful tome to slap Raven Quill onto)

#

It also auto-evades any enemy, including gods :P

exotic robin
#

if you're not recharging it, I think it's mostly just okay and needs a deck that can find it reliably so like... Trish or Daisy, but both of them have means of recharging it so your team is going to be giving you the side-eye if they know what's up haha

#

three auto-evades on Elites is pretty good

I played as Luke and god, I am going to miss the Gate Box. I didn't really use his ability, cause I'm still new to the game and by the time I realised he had one it was too late to rebuild my deck, but the Gate Box is still so powerful

Engaged with three enemies and don't have your spells? Gate Box. Need to travel to the other side of the map now? Gate Box. Need a turn to set up in a safe place? Gate Box.

Cluedrop Kate is the closest thing Arkham has to a conbo deck

Once you get your engine set up you trivialize the scenario because your research notes ignore shroud and give you like 3 clues an action and you're at +4-6 to all random treachery tests (and have forewarned for the testless ones) and can quick study to negate your weakness and can flux capacitor to deal with enemies and move for free with pathfinder and eon charts

#

Before that you're a mediocre gator struggling to get clues

There are other seekers who can do busted stuff too but for them it's more like gradually getting more powerful as they build up resources

#

Guy who only has neutral 0-5

But something to make up for it

mortal hazel
#

naw, the only investigator whose class is unknown at this point is Michael's, and he's definitely gonna be a Rogue, otherwise there wouldn't be any rogue in this expansion

formal depot
#

My theory is that all of them are duel class like Agatha, because it would be really weird to do that but only once

mortal hazel
#

In the article, Agatha is explicitly called out as dual-class. This makes sense with specifically Agatha. Also note that her two investigator cards have different numbers.

#

Or, hmm

formal depot
#

Lucius as a Seeker/Rogue
Marion as a Guardian/Survivor

#

Gloria as Mystic/Survivor
And then a Guardian/Rogue focused on guns

#

Is my theory

mortal hazel
#

They don't usually double up on deckbuilding rules

#

And no the card numbers literally don't fit

#

Marion is card 1, her signatures are 2 and 3, Lucius is 4, presumably his signatures are 5 and 6, we know Agatha's two investigator cards are card #7 and 8

#

This theory unfortunately doesn't make any sense, neat as it is

#

Agatha being dual-class also kinda makes sense with her very specific kinda setup.

#

It's not impossible that they'll give Michael, George or Gloria a second class option, but we can rule out Marion and Lucius having a second class

yeah the problem is that it's kinda almost always strictly correct to take, if you're good.

#

and Mystics, unlike Rogues, can easily be extremely resilient, if they build to be

(Rogues can also get pretty resilient, given a couple turns and such, but they've got a much tougher time just laughing off a critfail on a rotties or w/e turn one)

proven acorn
#

I'm mostly just
Did Mystics really need even more XP acceleration?

mortal hazel

yanno if all the other XP acceleration options didn't already exist, I do think this would be really cool

compact fern
#

Shame they have like, multiple of the best in the game

proven acorn
#

But they already have so much

mortal hazel

less of an obvious patch on Mystic progression than Forbidden Knowledge, doesn't constrain Mystics to Spell Asset Spam™️, more interesting downside than Down the Rabbit Hole

proven acorn
#

Maybe let Guardian in on the XP juice at some point too

mortal hazel
#

And the downside is less devastating than Obol, so the card becomes less game-warping to play around, dying is bad but not restart-from-0-xp, potentially losing the rest of a party's campaign levels of disastrous

proven acorn
#

You do get one more chance at least, yeah

formal depot

In the future if I play a rogue again I am taking Obol
