Oh yeah that works
fun fact: in gen 6, mega evolving did not update speed for its turn
generation speed changes are a lot of fun to study and figure out
so your mega diancie would be acting at base speed 50
instead of base speed 110
i remember a lot of protect on shit like alakazam
Still getting a feel for doubles strategy
But I do be liking this team, night shift away from so much random ice coverage, but randomly having dragon effectiveness in a pinch is nice
I'd like to get an ice Ninetales
Just stalled out a Mega Dragonite with Wish + Cosmic Power Clefable. The Clef was originally going to be for defensive Baton Pass strats, but it turns out you can just click Knock Off 16 times if the opponent can't kill you
This is good! Have you considered special kommo-o?
I haven't, really! Always struck me as mostly physical
I should take a look at the list of Champions pokemon, and see what I can transfer from my Sword save, since I'm done with that game
Technician ice shard is nice, but it's less the specific ability and more that Weavile's abilities are surprisingly bad.
Still fun in lower power formats, but should be pressure and pickpocket IIRC.
lmao
I am a little tired of seeing an incineroar on EVERY team but it makes sense
I just take care of him with mega lopunny
welcome to the past like 8 years of doubles
oh wait sorry it's ten years now
funny enough i think the real vgc glue for champions is Sneasler
i think you can have a team w out incineroar
i think if you do not have Sneasler you need a REALLY good reason
what does sneasler do
look like a fuckin dr. seuss character
so! sneasler has a lot going for it all at once:
it has very high attack and speed, is a poison/fighting type with good same-type moves (dire claw and close combat), has a very fast Fake Out, and has a variety of nice 4th move slots, and its ability - unburden - doubles its speed and is fairly easy to activate
and with those things
it generally checks most other Fake Out users and - for champions meta rn - threatens Mega Floette, the other big fairies, the big offensive steel types like Archaludon and Excadrill and Kingambit, nukes Tyranitar, Incineroar, and mostly OHKOs them
and it does all this as One Pokemon, which helps reduce overall stress on building your other 5 guys
and for things it cant kill, Dire Claw is a very funny move: 30% chance to paralyze, poison, or sleep someone
and in doubles, being asleep for 2 turns can be a game over
role compression is just really really good to have when you only get to bring 4 goobers
10% now iirc
10 or 20
got nerfed
didn't it get hit again?
no
...huh
its 30% to inflict a status, but its 10% individually
OH

it was 17% before
tyyy
Loses to Psyspam, NU at best /j
Psyspam isn't a problem in Champions, thankfully
Not yet
surprise! tapu time
ill take the tapu
im just scared of... that... THING.... (ominous shadow of indeedee)
what does it get that makes it worse to fight than a lele?
did lele not get expanding force?
huh, guess it didn't
i just dont have much experience fighting lele but i have a lot dealing with psyspam indeedee teams
late by half an hour lmao
😔 I brought shame on this chat
i forgive you
oh my god.
there are MORE ITEM CATEGORIES than just recent and stat boost
they just do not indicate that there are more to the left/right
i was losing my mind thinking my mega stones went into the void
Sneasler is good enough that being able to counter it puts something in serious contention for a team list
Like the giraffe
I love the giraffe
Rolled Alakazam earlier. Thinking of doing Mega Zam + Farigiraf for psyspam in Lele/Indeedee's absence. Is this anything or is Farigiraf a bit doomed outside of Trick Room?
Farig is fine even without TR
Being able to turn of priority is in and of itself an incredible trait
Still, feels a bit redundant if the idea is to set up Psychic Terrain as quickly as possible
ehhh
zam doesn't get expanding force, i don't think it's actually even the best abuser there
Yeah, I don't think MegaZam even wants Psychic Terrain super hard
I think it just wants to Hit Things Really Hard
yeah
Zam does get Expanding Force
It's SO fragile a setup turn is just
does it?
It didn't use to
it says it doesn't in gen 9
it did in gen 8
but not in gen 9
delphox, however
delphox learns eforce
so if you want to run a psyspam team i'd drop her in as your mega
also has the benefit of punishing the steels
the champ movesets are different from the gen9 ones
you'll have to look up their champ specific sets on serebii or similar
Mega Delphox gets Levitate though. Doesn't that negate Psychic Terrain boosts?
holy fuck they gave zam eforce back
yeah but it doesn't negate eforce
which is the biggest draw
but none of that matters
Oh interesting, thought it did
because they decided to give zam eforce
Abra is my all-time favorite pokemon though, so even if it wasn't the best choice I'd want to find a good use case for Alakazam
I've been running it in Singles with Psychic/Dazzling Gleam/Focus Blast/Nasty Plot with a Sash ANinetails to set up Aurora Veil for it and it's been ripping through low Ultra
And honestly Farigiraf is good for setting up psychic terrain in a setting without psychic surge pokemon
Since it can't be fake out'd of being able to use it
Are there any Prankster users of Psychic Terrain?
Just Meowstic afaik, and I really don't think running that would be the play
Yeah, looks like just meowstic
So, Eforce, Psyshock, Gleam, Protect? Maybe Focus Blast instead of Protect or Psyshock?
Yeah I'd probably want Focus Blast to delete Incineroar if nothing else. Would probably keep Protect, depends on how oppressive high SpDef stuff ends up being
Yeah, I think you start with Eforce/Gleam/Focus/Protect
I've heard that Mega Floette becomes problematic in higher tiers
I've only actually been against it once so far, and I Encored it into Calm Mind then bullied it with Mega Kangaskhan, so I've yet to see it piloted well
I’ve been abusing kingambit in tr to handle the flower
The aforementioned Sneasler is a good check to it just generically.
It has stab vs it, is hitting its weaker defense, and is faster
And provides value outside of being a check yeah
And the move you’re hitting it with is busted and unique to sneasler
Yeah, and Sneasler also helps your general issues vs fairy, darks, and steel types
As a psychic heavy team
Also it’s fast as fuck and only gets faster while also hitting like a truck
is sneasler base 120 or 125 speed?
Yeah I'm hoping to get a Sneasler soon. Currently running MKang/Whimsicott/Dragonite/Sinistcha as my main team with Hatterene and Farigiraf around for when I need Trick Room, but Sinistcha is really not pulling its weight in the current comp
120
iirc it's 120 atk 125 spe?
ah
other way around?
130 atk okay
motherfucker of a mon
weavile is 120 atk 125 spe
M'zam, Farig, Sneasler, Polteageist, Armarouge, something anchor-y
Is my initial thought?
Something to set up tailwind too probably
Instead of the polt or armarouge?
My Tyrantrum keeps getting one-shotted unless I keep it as my last pick in singles
Head Smash (and pray)
Yeah, I could
Most times, if I can get a Head Smash or Earthquake in the moment Tryantrum's out, it actually gets to hang around
(Rock Head ❤️)
Yeah I had been thinking MZam/Farig/Sneasler/Espathra with auxiliary Hatterene and maybe utility Dragonite with like Tailwind/TWave/Helping Hand/Protect, though the Dragonite would probably be a super shaky pick
Espathra a good one, yeah
I'd bring something big and nasty just to slam down that doesn't fit the rest of the team too
Like Baxcalibur
Huh, forgot I recruited Infernape and Garchomp
Is Baxcalibur in the game?
IDK
Looks like no
Just like, those vibes tho'
Big nasty, hits people hard.
Gets hit and is ok mostly
I mean I could just do old reliable and use the Outrage/EQ/DDance/ESpeed Dragonite I've been using
Dragonite is reasonably tough, but my worry is if you have to bring it in while terrain is still up espeed is doing fuckall
Oh fuck. I have to choose between finally having Hawlucha or nabbing a shiny Hippowdon.
Champions is fucking evil
Hmm. Hippowdon kinda outclassed in doubles I think for sand teams?
Could honestly just swap ESpeed for Roost or Tailwind
Tailwind a good call in genearl for this team
So that's kinda nice
If enemy is running tailwind you kinda need it to not just die to the non-priority stuff anyway
Your team is not very tough
Yeah it will probably be way too swingy to win super consistently. Even very common openers like Zard Y + Venusaur would likely give it some trouble
Yeah, I was thinking some kind of anti-weather would be really really nice.
Does Cloud Nine work continuously or only on switch-in? If it's continuous then Tailwind Altaria would be hilarious for utility
Continuously
hm
That seems like it would be really difficult to maneuver, but it could pay off if I could figure it out
Protect/Tailwind/Heatwave/Gleam maybe?
Protect/Tailwind/Wisp/Something?
Yeah, I like Protect/Tailwind/Wisp/Helping Hand offhand?
Protect/Tailwind/Helping Hand/Roost maybe? If its main goal is just to stay alive long enough to outlive the opposing weather setter I could see Roost being good
Wisp is probably better overall though to attempt to offset the team's overall poor defense
Yeah, that was my thought there, is wisping an enemy physical threat is VERY nice.
I could see going Protect/Tailwind/Roost/Wisp even tho'
You'll only bring it vs weather teams anyway
So it probably won't run out of being useful just by hitting the buttons it has
Especially because it's almost always probably in the back to start
Yeah I think this might be something. I'll have to actually get an Altaria, Sneasler, and Espathra/Polteageist, but once I can manage that this sounds like a pretty solid team
I like polteageist just because it has a different weakness set than Mega-Zam
Personally
I'd ask what a good Hawlucha kit would be, but I guess that'd depend on singles or doubles
also mega or not?
Although I guess they're both weak to dark lmao
And ghost
Wait nvm
I'm crazy
XD
yeah geist and zam isn't a great pair because they both get mogged by the same shit
I never used Mega Hawlucha before
Being able to switch into Mega Scizor is probably something, right?
Up until this point with training my mons, I've been experimenting with whatever I found on Smogon
So we're in a weird position of no psychic surge pokemon at all, so honestly I'm not even sure psychic terrain is the right way to bring Mega-Zam even with E-force
The biggest impact of psychic terrain is on the first turn when fakeout can't happen, tbh
That's what Farigiraf is for, mainly
Having to use a whole move for it to go out is rough
Right, but I'm not sure it's worth going farig and going psychic terrain
I agree farig is good protection for M-zam
But then I wonder if like, you even want to click psychic terrain
When Expanding Force can't be going off until turn 2
Maybe you'd rather be doing some kind of tailwind hyper offense thing
Using a slow pivot and a tailwind setter on turn 1 into mega-zam
Although actually that makes me think
A slow pivot with farig setting up psychic terrain is also really nice
Which makes me think maybe this a trick room OR psychic terrain team
Depending on enemy composition
Well my initial thought was to open with Sneasler + Farig, then pivot to Zam when Psychic Terrain goes up, possibly covering the switch with Follow Me on Farigiraf
Hmm.
Yeah, so my thought there is that if you want to do that, I'm not sure you even click Psychic Terrain turn 1?
Depending on enemy compoisition
Yeah I don't think it would be necessary turn 1, just as long as it's before Farig dies
Just leave Sneasler out until you think it's gonna die, make progress with Sneasler+Farig, and then click Psychic Terrain when you think Sneasler is about to die
The goal is not to switch Sneasler, the goal is to have Sneasler make progress and die, with Farig covering for it
Yeah that makes sense. I think Zam is much better at cleanup than as an opener anyway
But like, this makes me wonder if you ever click psychic terrain
Or if you just Hit Them Very Hard until they fall over
Well I think that's a matter of whether the dps loss from clicking Psychic Terrain is compensated for by the additional dps you get from Expanding Force
I do think Farig itself would probably skip Expanding Force for Psychic Noise
So, I think the answer is yes if you can click it all the time.
But the timing of when to click it is kinda finicky
I think it's probably worthwhile as long as the other team isn't like entirely psychic resists/dark types. Expanding Force off of 175 base SpAtk and 150 base Spd just feels like an ideal wincon
Lack of both tapus and indeedee makes this WAY more complicated. Otherwise, it's like yeah obviously throw MegaZam on the Psychic Terrrain team
Yeah being able to just toss Indeedee in and not think about anything would be very nice, but I think this is still worth attempting
Yeah
farig is mostly clicking hyper voice and psychic ye
Well, managed to climb out of pokeball tier in doubles
Nice
barely squeezed out a win because draco meteor decided to prank me 3 times and then finally hit on the 4th
shifting to sneasler lead and playing in the evening has increased my win rate
just got double frozen off a blizzard
keep getting one win away from master rank then losing
100 is actually good, below is a coinflip
tyranitar is out of ou? who is replacing it?
I'm like 99% sure it's still in OU rn
It dropped to either UU or UUBL for a while in gen 9 but with no changes to the mon it returned
It's genuinely immortal
it was in UU
it's not anymore, though, yeah
garchomp is in BL1 though
greninja & pex are both in UU, and neither blob is even that high
blissey's RU chansey's NU
Tyranitar genuinely may never leave OU permanently at this point
I'm almost convinced
Praying for the day garchomp returns to OU
chomp needs a new move tbh
it's just been powercrept out of being an optimal ground type
especially by things like great tusk
Ttar has a lot more than just stats going for it
Gchomp less so
It's flexible but
A lot of it's strength is in stats, and if you want stats you just bring paradox
I haven't kept up with OU lately, but wasn't lead Garchomp pretty viable somewhat recently? Something about getting stealth rock up while threatening opposing rock setters iirc
it doesn't threaten the best setters very well
(great tusk, lando)
but it's good against some of the others
I keep seeing clips of genuinely absurd bugs in Pokémon Champions and I'm just curious as to how some shit happens
Like I saw something of... the user of a move having focus sash somehow applying to another mon??? Or some shit???
Maybe that one was fake I didn't seen the actual items of each mon so it's possibly staged
But I have seen just. Absurd bugs that are confirmed
It can be so hard to tell sometimes
Esp cuz people wont disclose if its a modded switch or emulator or any of the other odd stuff, or if its a genuine weird glitch, or its a fixed video
What's the general opinion on Zoroark, competitive-wise?
Which one?
Oh sorry, original recipe
i just saw Sturdy activate on my Aggron on a move that didn't affect it (not impactful, just weird)
almost out of poke ball tier, thanks to winstreak bonuses
definitely need to mix up my team a bit, 5/6 of them were weak to water I think
horn drill is an ohko move
sturdy makes you immune to ohko moves
sturdy is why it didn't affect aggron
yeah
iirc
in earlier gens sturdy was JUST 'you're immune to ohko moves'
then they added the 'survive all hits while at full HP' thing later
which it
sturdy would have worked
horn drill would not have worked
OG is pretty meh in singles, Hisui has some uses. I suspect they're both pretty bad in doubles.
Yeah that's right. The change came in gen 5. Before that Sturdy was just kind of useless
sturdy does two things at present
Some interesting team analysis stuff here about a lot of the meta teams that went to a tourny.
Mega Delphox won a ~300 person tournament the night after Pokemon Champions released! As one of the fastest attackers in the game, it has the ability to take quick knock-outs. Surrounded by other strong options like Swords Dance Kingambit, Scarf Basculegion, and Lum Berry Dragonite, the team is incredibly well balanced.
Tournament Results: http...
immune to ohko, always live on 1 if at full
Scale shot being just what you do on Dragonite even without dice was a thing I was thinking about, nice to see some validation there
It's just mostly as good or better than Dclaw, and I'm a huge not a fan of outrage
90 acc is a killer

now do golbat
Makes sense since it's an overall lower power format.
Also god the old version (and arguably still the current version) of that move is a menace
nooo I had a good plan then an enemy quick claw killed it 😭
oh wow twice in a row
it's joever...
...people are using quick claw?
it's 30% chance which I think is higher than it was
and also there's just not many items anyways
it came with one of my starter pokemon too
although i don't know if everyone got the same ones
I believe we did
There's a lot of Pokemon in the game that don't have great items right now
So things like quick claw are more reasonable TBH
Huh, interesting
Quick claw is one of the free starter items yeah, and the pool is much smaller
So you make do
I was running galarian slowbro with quick draw quick claw for a moment cause it’s funny
- does showdown have clauses
- if not, does funbro work
clauses as in unallowed party comps or strategies. Smogon has a bunch, but VGC also has a species clause that disallows more than one of the same pokémon on any team
funbro is a specific slowbro set, using a bit of setup from other team members to stay alive until the "fun" starts, block to prevent the opponent from switching out, slack off to heal itself, heal pulse to heal the opponent, a leppa berry and recycle to never run out of PP
the plan is to run your opponent's pokémon out of PP and then heal their struggle damage so the match will last forever
not particularly sportmanlike but I find it amazing that it's possible
The Fun Never Ends
exactly
I'd expect Showdown to have a species clause built in to emulate VGC, but I don't know about others
though I suppose the match timer already shuts down funbro by itself
I know smogon doesn't but showdown does
ohh
...
champions
I've been saying showdown all this time, I meant champions
:V
pack it up lads we've committed a minor social blunder
oh champions has all the usual vgc trappings, so if it's legal in vgc it'd be legal in champions
though I think it might get in trouble at a vgc tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct
that, and I hadn't considered the match timer
yeah
praise me, I am now master
why is master easier than ultra
make it make sense
has anyone seen perishtrap work in champions yet?
I've seen it tried
to success?
negative
I see the parts of it
just kinda seems like gengar is better off blasting then being a gimmick
it SEEMS to just kinda be a fast meta
yeah that makes sense
everyone wants to be flip turning and parting shot and all that
wind up trapping something you don't want
says the lady using chilling reception
yes
you will trap what you want, given mega timing
on a very slow pokemon of course
slow pivots are good!
means you use the bulk of that pokemon and get the frail pokemon in unharmed
like they're not AMAZING moves in singles but in doubles they go hard
many such cases
set up is so strong, even in doubles, but pokemon have such a hard time getting a free turn on doubles that a proper fake out can win a match
especially with chilly into an ice type
stonks
what ice type are you going into A tales or frosslass?
I've tried both
Ninetales is nice because you can give it snow lco, which feels nice
mega froslass is great but she creates snow on entry so it's a little redundant
but still not bad yeah
plus I might not want to mega froslass if I need Lopunny to whoop some ass instead
ghost is a much stronger type in doubles than singles because of it's ability to escape trapping and avoid fake out
v true
unless you're mega lopunny
that's been fun
mega fakeout that hits ghost types
and looks cute while doing it
scrappy is one hell of an ability, especially they made it make you immune to intim
kang gets scrappy fakeout, not mega kang
so it can be fun to lead kang, fake out turn one into ghost, mega turn 2
yeah
I kinda wish they just made mega Lopunny full fighting
normal/fighting is so weird to me for some reason
dual typing is so much stronger
I mean I like having STAB fakeout
but it makes her weak to OTHER fighting types and opens you up to psychics too
Also TIL that fire resists fairy
I didn't know that
ye, fire is actually a really solid defensive typing
being fighting only opens you up to psychics just as much, I suggest running sucker punch
fighting doesn't resist itself?
huh. so it doesn't.
nah, fighting types wanna catch those hands
also since I have started playing
Mega Lopunny has missed precisely three Hi Jump Kicks
and NOBODY expects Bounce
https://youtu.be/P7QEOWSk92E?si=ec4JiqRMqBLgkGzk sharing this again cause I expect folks will be interested
love to see it
there's been a post since then about increased prizing and the festival leads, and I checked signups and they're over 10k
I'm entered, I do not expect to be in the 0.01% that makes top cut
lol
good job!!
it worked as in it took out 2 of my guys successfully
i still pulled the win out of my ass

Pokemon Champions VGC Doubles involves such fellows as Incineroar, Sneasler and Sinistcha in Regulation M-A. This is known to be the case.

it's a treat to hear the XY battle music again ☺️
how it feels being a new pokemon battler

your brain grows
Swapped out Manectric in my team for Excadrill, so that I can have something to lean on in case Ninetales isn't working out for me
It has simply died to a fire move every time I've put it out there
Whats the excadrill set?
Its a fairly good candidate for a choice scarf if this is Singles
So true
White Herb, Attack and Speed max, EArthquake, Brikc Break, Protect, Iron Head
why white herb?
intimidate
Even jolly just hits 154 speed, which does lose out to some of the threats that can return-OHKO excadrill without support
+speed nature charizard hits 167, neutral speed outspeeds not-jolly excadrill, uninvested mega-delphox speed ties, etc etc
i dont have a feel for battle spot singles meta but my gut tells me weather is harder to set up so you cant rely on sand rush
Mega Delphox is not as dominant as I thought it might be
I try to open up with tyranitar and excadrill when I do use him
so I can just
go brr from the get go
just spent some xp candy to get a kirlia into a gardevoir and transferred it over to champions, trying to make it a kind of healer type.,.,
ooh, just saw a fun starmie + trevenant duo, the latter was harvesting Sitrus berries and the starmie was surfing and doing other stuff
I've seen that sinistchea sees a lot of play, what makes it so strong
great support, particularly its ability which heals your partner on swap in
been seeing her more in singles
for sinstcha: Hospitality ability as noted, which heals on switch in; Rage Powder to draw in all aggro + have decent bulk to take these hits with its typing, signature move Matcha Gotcha is a decent healing spread move that can burn, and then the fucker also gets Life Dew and Strength Sap for even more healing
"whoa, this guy has 2 gengars"
my friend: "based"
"ok i'm knocking it off.... easy kill"
"WHAT THE FUCK IT WAS A ZOROARK"
biggest plot twist in any pokemon game i've played
don't think it really mattered much in the battle, but my very-into-pokemon friends are really enjoying seeing me flounder about and experience pvp for the first time
I love you Zoroark. I wish you were better but I love the chaos you cause.
Wolfey sorta made it work
This is not an endorsement of zoroark, wolfy could make a ham sandwich work
It's also a situation where if Zoroark was too much better it would be at risk of being banned as I know people don't like the chaos it adds to pokemon
By actively hiding information from the other player
Ugh, speaking of Wolfey
I'm going to get tired of "Wolfey made a video on X pokemon and now I have to see it all day"
I've run into Mega Meganium almost every match
also I forgot I took bounce off of my mega lopunny and almost goofed lol
Ohhhhh is Mega Meganium good?
Better than I expected, still not great but like, serves a useful purpose on a rain team
I think @manic kindle was a rain team guy
Ability makes it so that every move acts as though it's under sunlight
Becomes grass/fairy
I'm not even upset at like, how strong it is, I'm just kinda tired of seeing it
it's gonna be a rough month for you then, he's making a video every day
I knooooow
It happens all the time in league of legends
Streamer makes a video about a champion build that's unorthodox or that people thought wasn't good
They use it well because they have good fundamentals
People mimic that player but don't have good fundamentals
yeah that's my comment about wolfey making a ham sandwich work
he's the perish trap guy, a team literally no one else has had success with and he's won like 4 regionals with it
I'm higher rank than him tho
lol
I'm really happy about reaching master
I was hard stuck ultra 1 and 2 for like half a week
you are great I agree
aww thanks
I also have an advantage of having some vgc brain worms for a while
so even if I wasn't playing vgc I'd thought about it a lot
I had a couple strong visions of what I wanted to do and one really paid off
and I'm also bound and determined to keep my blorbos on this team
galarian slowking and mega lopunny
I'll slot in anything else but those are my babies for now
Might try and make a trick room team with g-king
I thought you meant Team Rocket at first
1 week in, how're folks liking champions/the content being produced because of champions
I like it but I feel hard stuck where I'm at
I drop down to great 4, get two games in to go up, meet someone who's clearly just ladder climbing with the best stuff possible, get knocked down, meet that again, 0 progress made
good news is I don't think there's a consensus best team, meta is fluctuating
but you're probably somewhat right in that your desire to use your blorbos might be what is getting you stuck
i am, i love mega meganium its so good
i got in some good practice coaching someone last night too, she was wanting to make Simipour work and we got her to Ultra
I do think using blorbos you gotta make sure you're taking full advantage of them and all their nuances and shortcomings; nothing to be ashamed of but it is a useful skill to be able to look at your faves and go 'aw man Sneasler kills my entire time' and try to fix or plan around it
or recognizing that there is a reason the most popular set for smth like Sinistcha is the support set, even if you want to do calm mind attacker, etc
The thing is I'm not even running into teams where slowking is particularly good. So he hasn't been involved in the battles that I'm losing.
When I do bring him along because he sets up nicely, and has strong sp atk and swap potential I tend to win
So like, I'm not convinced that's the problem. and Mega Lopunny has been putting in work.
Maybe I'm bringing the wrong crew into these fights idk
Tyranitar Excadrill is working well enough
I'm finding not many good spots to bring out Kommo-o
When I commit to Alolan Ninetales it goes hard, so long as I'm not running headfirst into weaknesses
The pick 4 part of the game IS hard, even the pros lose to it
cuz you have to like
get into the other guy's head looking at YOUR team and plan around it, in theory, but also at great ball-ish rank you will lose to people just Clicking Buttons, so its a weird spot where the skill doesnt always reward you
It's like low ladder in showdown
People will make genuinely baffling plays you never could have accounted for and you can lose for playing assuming your opponent will do the reasonable thing
Or that they have a set that makes sense
part of my coaching last night was doing a lot of "okay if this guy was playing properly he'd switch here into his backline ghost type, but he wont, hes gunna click dazzling gleam, so just attack and you'll be rewarded"
Entered a friendly vgc tournament
does a speed boon whimsicott even need speed IVs? it's faster than most of my other mons even if i were to take out all the point, so I'm thinking of redistributing some to HP
idk if it’s super important to guarantee your tailwind or leech seed though
(you're thinking of EVs, not IVs. IVs were removed in Champions and are not a limited resource)
Our understanding is that you're not trying to outspeed your own mons so much as you're trying to outspeed other Tailwind setters since Speed changes are calculated dynamically now
or wait, that shouldn't matter because Whimsicott usually runs Prankster, so you'd still get your Tailwind up before your opponent's Pokemon could act. Hmm.
actually wait, Whimsicott sometimes runs Taunt. Yes you want to run speed investment so you don't risk getting Taunted
you don't necessarily have to run 252 investment if you're not trying to compete against full investment Whimsi though. Sometimes a middling investment is fine and you can put some points into bulk stats
also sometimes you do want to click your not-prankster Moonblast
that too
hmm
you're not going to outspeed Sneasler fakeout either way, so I can see cutting the speed investment tbh
but what if they know you know they know
116 speed puts you in an interesting spot outside of prankster; depending on if youre on moonblast or smth like giga drain, you could look at exactly the pokemon you're wanting to hit (example: kingambit, t-tar, archaludon, etc)
I might try to get champions and bum off some pokemon from my brother's decade old go account
as an example: jolly garchomp hits 169 speed; not-+speed-whimsicott hits 168 maxed out, so you want a +speed nature to nail it first
but because of this if you run a +speed nature on whimsicott, you hit 184 - that's too much, so you can drop points until you hit 170 and put the rest elsewhere if you wanted!
There are merits to keeping a max speed +speed nature whimsicott, in that you beat other whimsicott that are not +speed, but
I wanna give healer gardevoir a decent shot..
I was thinking
- whimsicott and gardevoir, set up tailwind and maybe leech seed while gardevoir hits life dew/draining kiss/dazzling gleam
- switch out whimsicott for like king's rock bullet seed meowscarada or something or whatever other dps i have and gardevoir spams life dew... idk if this is in any way viable LOL
and if gardevoir doesn't need hp i could use Heal Pulse instead of Life Dew, though that might mean giving up Psychic
You'll likely also want a really bulky guy to heal as well
something like mega venasaur or kingambit or
got caught up elsewhere LOL or aegishlash and whatnot
multiscale dragonite loves healing
ya! the initial idea starter was multiscale dragonite, but 25% heal seems a little low to upkeep that, so I was thinking of Leech Seed too
but Heal Pulse might help solve that, and I was thinking of giving Gardevoir Quick Claw or a Sitrus berry
ooh aegislash, that's a fun one
can it use swords dance in shield forme
Sinistcha+Dragonite is something i have dealt with on the ladder before; healing Dragonite on switch in is real nice
it can!
👀
i don't think i know what a sinistcha is... research for later
i said i would go shower and study after I lost but I went on a winstreak instead, so I have to be responsible and cut myself off 😭
https://pokepast.es/70268428e3bf2f24
someone sent me this as a team idea, I think they might've misinterpreted the hydreigon/scizor duo as a must run but I also don't want to criticize the effort of someone who did this for no reason. Hydreigon and scizor don't seem to match the trick room set up the rest of the team is focused on
Typically you bring them when you arent bringing trick room / mimikyu
Scizor doesnt mind tr due to bullet punch tho
how does it look? I'm too new to comp to recognize the quality. I could also cut scizor and hydreigon if it makes it better, I have a large pool of favorites to choose from and golurk is already there
It's worth remembering when you bring a team that does a gimmick
Sometimes that gimmick is bad
Vs the enemy team
And you should just bring stuff that's good
It's a lot better to have flexibility than it is to go all in on one gimmick imo
at a glance this all makes sense, i can dig in deeper in a moment
rain dance sneasler is kind of inspired thats fun
is that hamstring fire types?
Its fast enough to click Rain Dance on the turns Charizard goes Mega-Charizard-Y and uses Drought
so you deny the instant sunny day
I thought it was better to be slow weather setter
Sinistcha is from teal mask in scarlet and violet
also mega evo / abilities trigger before moves
idk how you're supposed to win ranked matches without a faint consistently past poke ball tier
going for an achievement?
The trick is it counts surrenders iirc and sometimes people will indeed surrender after a bad turn1
hmm i see
I think it's my last weekly challenge, and not rerollable :(
maybe I'll just send out a sweeper and gardevoir turn 1 instead of messing around with whimsicott at all, and pray
That can work!
What does basculegion do?
Ghost/Water, REALLY fast, hits you really hard
Usually either in rain teams or with a choice scarf
also it has the most powerful move in the game's history
less powerful in doubles
but still pretty cracked
More powerful than fishious rend?
Fishious Rend is kind of an interesting one because it's like, a bunch of things together
That create multipliers
This move is just generically nuts
me when i 300 bp adaptability you in rain
It's only 200bp adaptability in doubles at best
But uh
"Only 200 bp adaptability"
XD
Fishious Rend on the other hand is "only" 170
Before multipliers
ghost weather would go hard though
I kinda want weather and/or terrain effects for every type
But I feel like a lot of them would just end up having to be bad
And also they'd probably need to add a 3rd or even 4th "type" of weather
So they don't just cancel each other out a lot
b: weather wars moment
Yeah, like, it wouldn't be interesting in practice.
c: yeah some would have to be intrinsically bad
But I want the VIBES of it for sure.
Terrain vs weather is a good balance IMO because both can exist
aye, i like what they did with it
I think spikes, stealth rock, and poison spikes can kinda be thought of as ground/rock/poison "weather"
Except sandstorm kinda also exists
How does basc get it bred onto them?
Picnics
Just have it with a mirror herb and have a picnic with a houndstone with last respects
And the basculegion will pick it up
They're in different egg groups, and no one else can pick it up
So I don't think you can actually "breed" it into them
Being normal/ghost is also very useful because you are immune to Fakeout and Close Combat
Does that work in champions of you don’t have scarlet/violet
I don't have one, so I couldn't tell you
I assume you can just learn it in champions
You can just learn the valid moves in Champions, yes
Basculegion Pokémon Serebii.net Pokédex providing all details on moves, stats, abilities, evolution data and locations for Pokémon Champions
here's all of basc's moves in Champions
Btw I just learned recently breaking swipe is a spread move
That makes it a lot better lmao
breaking swipe 🤝 snarl
the stat down brothers
My brain is still so singles-pilled, I'm learning new shit every day
its such a wide and different world
so apparently the guy that did that team above was a kindred spirit trying to do trick room mimikyu and had most of the team set up but stumbled across my 2 vote reddit post asking for team help and thought that adding scizor and hydreigon to the team was an interesting way to cover weaknesses
was thinking about this, can only 1 Tailwind be active at a time, or can both sides have it
both sides!
It used to be only one side, but then that made Tailwind even more OP since in addition to giving you a speed buff it also turned off your opponent's Tailwind, IIRC?
no it was always both sides; the big recent change in the last few gens is that tailwind updates in real time, as do all speed changes now
so priority prankster Tailwind immediately makes your buddy faster Right Now
Yeah, t'was a rather big change.
ive done some nasty stuff to people with fast icy winds
Previously the only way to get an immediate speed boost would be something like drizzle plus swift swimmer I think (and other weather equivalents).
Icy wind Fluttermane is mean
The face of someone who knows what they did.
This is the face of something that left a big heaping ghostly shit on my carpet
what makes firagiraff the best trick room setter?
It’s only arguably the best but turning off priority, low speed itself, decent bulk, hits decently hard
Crescelia is the staple who isn’t in yet right
And mimikyu saw a bit of play there in some formats without the mainstays
Pretty much, though mimikyu is in the rough position where they're likely to be legal in formats where the mainstays are too.
poor mimikyu
Yeah, weather is an eternal threat
what are the mainstays of trick room outside of crescelia and firagiraf?
I know torkoal and hatterene, and then rhyperior was like mimi where they saw play early sw/sh (you can tell when I was following the meta lol)
In champions?
Outside of Champions, Ursaluna and Ursaluna Blood Moon have been big, whilst Calyrex Ice-Rider continues to be a thing.
woohoo
close close games, but gardevoir is doing pretty good at doing aoe stuff with dazzling gleam
saved me in the last couple of games while they were focusing on my other mon
I think you see Amoongus too
In trick room
You also see Indeedee as a setter sometime
But I think that was pre-farig
One of mine and Reggie's favorites, also sees Porygon2 see usage
For champions theres a variety; Firagarif, Oranguru, Mimikyu setters, usually see a torkoal or m-blastoise, kingambit, other slow sweeps or priority abusers
Three example master ball rank trick room teams
Lots of variety
Trick room historically has pretty good variety, because the only requirement is "Be slow"
And even then you want 1-2 fast pokemon
Oranguru in particular is interesting with TR attackers due to signature move
Instruct is busted
Turn one torkoal protect, oranguru set tr, turn 2 eruption and instruct
first couple hours of a pokemon game are the sweet spot cause all the unnamed npcs just say stuff like Oh, man! I can't get enough of changing my settings in the menu!
302
1012
the power of science is staggering!
apparently just be being in masters rank I'm in the top 100k players?
I feel like that's above my pay grade
also if you go into submenu on the main menu, there's a setting to display battle info, so you don't have to constantly search for it
Nice
Sick, nice Reggie
that’s my goat
Yay, rolled a Starmie
Nice, for rain?
Neat choice of mons
To help you figure out what youre doing: whats everyone's goal on the team?
Whats your win condition(s)?
@pliant violet feint sneasler is so so mean im in love
they should make feint 50 bp again :)
I truly wish more romhackers knew ways to make their hacks hard other than "give everyone six Pokémon with hidden abilities, perfect stats, coverage moves." Why do these random painters' Smeargle know Sacred Fire and Seed Flare? Am I to assume they have encountered Ho-oh and Shaymin?
they appear to all the pure in heart
Are you playing difficulty hacks? Theres others out there
Not all difficulty hacks are made equal and some are Explicitly made to suffer like run n bun
I get it tho sometimes i want a harder hack but the creators idea of casual-hard is "i reduced all catch rates"
does run n bun have buns
It does but it mostly has pure suffering
So Sticky Web is bug then?
Yep.
😔
i can feel it... today's pull will have a lopunny...
I got Sneasler, Armarouge, and Altaria from the tournament coupons. Project Psyspam can get off the ground
Is Roserade in Champions?
Yes
Neat, one of my all time favs alongside Scizor.
We do love aramrouge and ceruledge
i haven't tried the trial ceruledge much yet
might try to slot it in
i think i'm at the point where i should be modifying moves and building a team with strategies
it'll give you an edge!
Cuts to the core of the metagame
mm gotcha
We’re just making puns
anywhere where i can look at teams?
puns... lopuns...
once you do start customizing stuff, its easy to see how others do it in game when youre editting stuff you can hit Y and see what others are doing / whats popular
as for teams...
ohh yeah i did see that for natures
idk if i should modify my current one or just make a whole new team and learn how to play it
or try to build around a mon i like
i havent found one spot really, but theres a few spots like pikalytics
okok
I haven't followed any pokemon content people in a while, is anyone really making psyspam work in Champions?
I'm going to try to make it work regardless, but it would be cool to see more ideas to build from
i feel like my team is ok rn, but again it's still very freestyle
ooh i rolled a glimmora
i saw that for the first time today
I have not seen psyspam, but largely because you have to spend a turn using the move so it loses a lot of momentum
and in that same match the enemy whimsicott used taunt and encore 😭
my whimsicott did leech seed for 5 turns
i guess i should have switched it out LOL
No psychic terrain setters in champions
dang glimmora looks quite nifty
Yeah I'm trying to get a team off the ground with Fargiraf to manually set psychic terrain
Centerpiece is Mega Alakazam
🤔 i guess you'd want to bait it like you would trick room, so farig + some fake out or attention grabbing support
Yeah generally Farig + Sneasler opener aiming for the Sneasler to make progress against psychic counters then die and let MZam in to clean up. Cloud Nine Tailwind Altaria in the back to hopefully surprise weather teams and keep speed control, though I'll be skeptical about that until I try it in unranked at least a bit, and Armarouge (later Espathra hopefully) for secondary eforce spam that can punch through steel without relying on Focus Blast and Aegislash as an anchor/MFloette check hopefully
mhm mhm, i'd check damage calcs to see how altaria does at eating heat waves and other threats from archaludon, megs, exca, etc
aegislash is a nice floette counter i can say from experience
The Altaria is max hp max spdef, so I'm not too worried about Sun or Rain, but I think Blizzard spam is going to be spooky no matter what and TTar is TTar. Hopefully running Wisp on the Altaria will help against Excadrill as well
Actually does Cloud Nine have any interaction with Mega Sol? I'd think not but it would be neat if it did
Hm, not sure what the play to deal with TTar + Excadril or Mega Froslass in general would be. I guess Aegislash has an okay matchup into snow in theory
It does not interact with mega sol
Mega Froslass does not appreciate being hit by a Choice Scarf attacker, and TTar/Exca individually do not want to be caught off guard by Sneasler
aww, buneary isn't in SV
i was trying to move one from go, pump it full of xp candies, then send a lopunny to champions
Oh Scarf Armarouge could be good here. Hadn't thought of that
it isnt </3 but buneary is in the sword/shield dlc and the Legends games
dang..
my sword save is on my bestie's profile on my switch (before game sharing was a thing), so i would need his switch to trade it over.. it can wait
yeah i think armor cannon is like, 180% guaranteed ohko into froslass
faster than timid froslass too which is nice
all good buns must wait, or something like that
🙂↕️
hmmmm
is knock off always 97 power against mega stone holders
also, is dragon dance on ttar worth using, or should I swap it to an offensive dragon move (or add protect in somewhere..)
If used on a Pokémon that cannot lose its held item — such as a Pokémon holding its corresponding Mega Stone — this move will not receive the boost.
</3 sadly knock off does not get the increase against mega stones
ough..
Dragon Dance T-tar can be used! Its a particular build and requires care, mostly cuz he's such a big slow guy already; its usually easier to do 3 attacks + protect or something of the sorts
rn I've got
- Stone Edge (probably switching for Rock Slide?)
- Knock Off
- Fire Punch
- Dragon Dance
and I'm thinking of putting Protect in somewhere

I think you mean thankfully, lmao
rock slide, knock off/crunch, fire punch/low kick/ice punch, protect Just Works
wait whimsicott can learn sunny day :O
and glimmora has solar beam.. but no special attack..
Glimmora is usually a special attacker!
Pretty much all the default sets need adjusting
😔
gotchaa
easy fixing at least
i think at this point you should have a good chunk of training tickets
o
i've only used 1 too
🤔 how did i get so many...
alright! i'll try encore on whimsicott for now, maybe i can make someone waste some turns... then i'll see if i ever want to try sunny day later
whimsicott and ttar with assurance sounds like a nice way to kill something in one turn
pelipper and archaludon
the rain buddies...

@unkempt gulch forgive me for pinging you here, but why is your avatar Porygon2 again?
just my favorite pokemon. ^^;
Ah
even before i came out as trans
I thought there was a deeper reason
Yeaaaah
Honestly knowing you and Jane for years inoculated me against a lot of the anti-trans stuff going around now... 🙁
Anyway thanks
it's a good one
Tru
Anyway I got kinda carried away but I did acquire a Tyrunt recently
I've always wanted to use Tyrunt.
Tyrunt is my fave fossil and my favourite little cup pokemon
...Tyrunt sees play in LC now?
sometimes!
big stats, strong jaw lets it have strong coverage, Dragon Dance is an option
Yeah I was going to guess it was Dragon Dance-related
My max speed mega crabomible will prove the haters wrong.
Poke of the mon …
I was being really stubborn about putting sash on aerodactyl for some reason and then I realised I didnt even have sash on my team anymore
aerodactyl is very good in champions
Hes so gooood
unfortunately for aerodactyl lovers I run tr
Understandable 😔
im not sure how I beat trick room honestly
I have it on gardevoir theoretically to have the option of reversing but idk how practical that is
and it hasn't really come up
depends the sort of trick room, mine is not what I consider the most optimal
yeah tru
also depends what else you're running, to threaten TR teams
Im doin mega ttar, garchomp, orthworm, aerodactyl, telepathy gardevoir, scarf rotom-heat
ttars bulk helps I think
free EQ's in sandstorm?
mm
I build for that and then I strangely feel relucant to actually use garchomp and eq so I need to work on that I think
what do folks think about espathra?
I'm thinking of a very silly team with baton pass espathra and clawitzer
ok so far thinking Clawitzer, Espathra, Whimsicott, Dragapul, Sneasler
I've got space for a mega, considering mega aerodactyl
taking any suggestions on mega ideas
Jolly mega aero outspeeds scarf jolly basculegion which is pretty cool
Maybe M Chandelure? It would probably appreciate speed pass quite a bit I'd think. Could be slightly redundant with Dragapult though
Is it only baton passing speed or is there a way to work a calm mind in there
https://old.reddit.com/r/wholesomeyuri/comments/1snxzmi/gardevoir_x_lopunny_pokemon/ogpdku7/
During my Sword playthrough, my Alcremie once fought a F!Gardevoir. Thought I'd go easy on the poor gal, so my Alcremie used Draining Kiss. So did the Gardevoir. So I did again. And so did she.
Never have I thought I'd see a lesbian makeout match in a Pokémon game.
used my first protect today and successfully read they would ice beam again to kill ttar
then used mystical fire to debuff the enemy, then my gardevoir came in and they forfeited
feels good to be working more moves into my toolkit
forgot to mega my dragonite before draco meteor 💔
i would have ohko the archaludon...
i think i lose this game now lol

hawlucha rock slided, my delphox focus banded, but flinched
close close, would not have been close if i pressed R...
now you are stronger

That was part of it yeah
this may be the funniest team ive run into
trick room rain dance spout is so so fucking looney toons
oh I've seen this team
god
i hope mega lopunny keeps fake out last resort
if it comes to champions
(is it in champions?)
it is!
99% sure it is
that I do not know
alas
I know, what use am I
none at all
you have failed me
you claim to be a font of knowledge, and yet you run dry
AND A LIAR TOO
OH, WHITHER DO THE GOOD MEN GO?
anyway, what're you running right now? still trick room?
ye, tried some silly stuff with espathra and clawitzer for a bit
and am trying desperately to make hisuian decidueye work
triple arrows is a nuts signature move, it has scrappy
it has the bones of an idea
unfortunately it just
has too much bst allocated to spatk
it some of that 95 had gone into bulk, it'd be alot comfier
yeah, 60 speed is rough too
like I said it's got ideas but mixed attack stats hurt
if anyone has ideas for hisuian decidueye, hit me up
what's kangaskhan there for?
currently considering pairing with aerodactyl talonflame for tailwind
Id run calcs to be sure but that screens+speed swap alakazam wolfey tried might be cool here
Big dumb damage
that's a thought
Aegislash/Aggron/Orthwurm
might be a nice partner too to switch decid into; a lot of what might kill him probably bounces off the shield
am I crazy for thinking sneasler is better than incin in champions?
the loss of knock off in incin's kit hurt it a lot
also idk what switch I flipped but I'm now on a 6 match streak in master
Interesting kangaskhan
an oldy but a goody
?
Yoooo, the first Pokemon ranger guardian signs romhack just finished
Yes of course. 😂
I think I’ve plateaued in champions, in mid master rank
I do not belong here but I am not getting sent higher or lower
who are the main TR setters in Champions? We know Reuniclus used to get used for TR occasionally back in gen 5
Fari is probably the best one
Farigiraf, Slowking, Hatterene

mimikyu in some comps
the meta is far from settled, as are specific variations of archetypes
I like farig best, personally, it's got good bulk, hits decently hard, and armour tail provides some really strong innate utility in turning off opposing priority
not having to worry about fake out or sucker punch is big
I've never had anything specific in mind other than "fuck it we ball". At the very least, I had Toxicroak on board to help cover for Gardevoir, and Mega Starmie feels like a real powerhouse.
Here's a more detailed look
For the hell of it, this was the singles team I was experimenting with, but that's on the backburner atm
I read somewhere that I should learn the fundamentals of online battling with a team from the net before trying to brew my own.
That really depends on what you're after
If you just want to get better that's probably true
But if you want to do things with your blorbos I'd say that sounds like miserable advice
though there's a bunch of ways to learn how to get the best out of your blorbos
Yeah
I'd just ask for advice for what to do with them instead of trying to play a team you have no emotional connection to
If that's what is important to you
My hybrid advice is to look at established teams/cores for blorbos you like
I love pelipper and meganium so rain team fit nicely for me
or pokemon similar to blorbos you like
I knew hydrapple was slow with big special attack and pretty good bulk, so I started looking from there
good pokemon
big beak
bill
so many pokemon i haven't seen before...
like florges and mega froslass
at least one of those is v new
does choice scarf work retroactively with trick
ooh, parabolic charge with a rhyperior partner...
if you're faster (i.e use trick before them in turn order) you lock them into that move, if you're not whatever they use next will be locked in

basically you're locked into the first move you use after gaining a choice item, if that's clearer
oh yea reggie, i sent you a friend request in-game
gotchaaaa
I saw and accepted
their gardevoir gave my whimsicott a choice scarf
I'm like 540 speed
it didn't matter since i got my tailwind up and swapped it out, and they didn't have a tailwind setter
oh if you're using whims it might be helpful to know that dark types are immune to status moves that gain priority from prankster
yeah 😔 i tried to encore incineroar and it just killed me instead
yeah
that's near exactly the scenario I was thinking
it also means any of those status moves won't work with farigiraf or tsareena out on the field
they both have abilities that block priority moves from opponents from effecting their side of the field
so you can't click fake out into farigiraf, for example
ohh i see
is extreme speed a real move
80 power and +2 priority seems pretty good but i have only seen it on dragonite
arcanine gets it as well, but you're right to be a bit wary, it's very rare and for good reason
as you say, it seems pretty good
It's a very strong move but very little gets it
good enough that dragonite had it's best meta showings ever in scvi when it could get stab on it
(among other reasons dnite was good)
It's most famous for Dragonite and linoone with belly drum
linoone..
