so the question: are there any common support hero who can pivot to carrying in a pinch?

Good harass, The Swarm is extremely powerful, gets a ton of exp from the facet, gives a ton of vision and can kill enemy supports in teamfights while being a major nuisance to catch, aghs gives your carry another life

I played League for a while, then stopped because of some news about the company. I've been thinking about getting into Dota 2, but I'm having trouble understanding how the game works, even with the in-game tutorials. Does anyone have suggestions for how to learn the game? Or do I just need to suffer through until I figure it out?

Ingame tutorials are probably out of date, best bet would be to gather up a group you enjoy playing with to suffer through the very first "matchmaker doesn't know where to put you" games and subsequent "matchmaker puts you against people who still have 200+ games on you but are maybe more appropriate opponents" phases.
But barring that, if you have any questions the dota players here are very helpful. Feel free to ping the role too, if you're looking for a stack.
Any specific questions? Coming from League the broader concepts should still be familiar, but there's a lot of difference in the small stuff that adds up.

My understanding is that Dota's items are a little backwards from League - less expensive items are more cost efficient, but provide less stats than the higher tier stuff. So in the laning phase you'll pick up a stat-appropriate item (Bracer, Wraith Band, Null Talisman) and a magic stick and some consumable regen, then grab boots, then whatever you hero's core items are.
PNet used to play a lot, it's been quiet recently though.

One difference to League (I think, I haven't played League in at least a decade) is that the courier existing means consumable regen plays a bigger role in Dota
You can basically constantly be ferrying out regen and early game items during laning
Also, Tom mentioned it but you always want boots of some variety (except for two specific facets that give movement speed but prevent you from getting movement from boots). They don't stack however, so only get one pair

For objectives, the big ones are
- Wisdom Shrines - these spawn on the far East and West sides of the map every 7 minutes, and give exp to the hero who picks them up and the hero with the lowest exp (other than them) on their team. The first couple shrines (at 7 minutes and 14 minutes) are the most important, generally the offlane support should be on the shrine at 7 minutes
- Tormentor - spawns at 20 minutes in the far Northwest, respawns 10 minutes after being killed, gives Aghanims Shard (permanent buff that usually changes one of your abilities, depends on the hero) to one of the two lowest net worth heroes on your team, plus gold to everyone. It reflects damage and constantly regens hp (or shield, technically), so you need to coordinate with your team to have the damage and hp to kill it, but it's quite worthwhile if you can get people coordinated. At night it moves to the Southeast corner instead.
- Roshan - lives in a pair of pits in the river, Northwest at night and Southeast during the day, gives gold and drops the Aegis of the Immortal item when killed. Any hero can pick the Aegis up, while holding it they respawn five seconds later in the same spot when killed. Aegis vanishes five minutes after being picked up if unused. Rosh respawns a random time between 8 and 11 (I think?) minutes after being killed. Further kills cause him to drop more stuff, but the Aegis is the big one. He's very tanky, so you usually want to go kill him after a teamfight so your carry can get Aegis, which helps immensely for pushing high ground
Towers are Towers and Barracks are Inhibitors (except they don't respawn), you push them when you have the space, have won a teamfight, or are just generally strong enough
Note that since everyone is usually carrying Teleport Scrolls (you should always have at least one on you, they have their own inventory slot) towers are fast-travel spots as well, which makes pushing them dangerous (enemies can port in) but also more valuable (killing them severely hampers the enemy's map mobility)

But because I'm pretty specialized, I've gotten pretty good at the game pretty quickly
