They are generally really fun to play against. They feel dynamic and interesting and new enough that even experienced players will think about doing stuff like Scanning or being less aggressive, and they also address a lot of issues people have with core NPC rules

One small little downside is that trying to use them with like, other non-rebake NPCs, like the ones from this book and others like wallflower, you can really tell the difference in quality and smoothness 💀

For Lancer my process is generally either starting with a concept of a map/sitrep or an NPC combo I think could be particularly fun. If you start with the map and sitrep, you figure out what kinds of NPCs would work to hinder the players best on that front. If you start with the NPCs, you design an arena and goal that plays into their strengths and then add some supporting NPCs that are slightly less important

so, randomly, I wish to rant about a thought experiment/situation that exists in Calliope:

There is a freighter. It has a route - it picks up cargo at Rao Co blink gate, travels 10 light years to Calliope, then 6 light years on to the Dawnline Shore where the cargo is dropped off/swapped for some DLS export. After this the ship retraces its steps back the way it came.

From the point of view of a "stationary" observer, such as one on Cradle or Calliope, the whole round trip takes 32 years. From the point of view of a crewmember who is awake the whole journey, such as the shipboard NHP, it takes 3.2 years (plus time at least stop to check over the ship/for crew R&R). For biological crew who spend time in pause tanks when not needed to do essential work, it's probably more like 1 year (including R&R time).

If you were to meet such a crewmember at a bar on the icebreaker during a stopover on the outward flight, this means the last time they were in Calliope (20 years ago), the demon winter was a recent event and the strikebreak hadn't occurred yet.

If that crewmember has done the round trip 5 or more times, they'll remember The Calliope Project's heyday. But they can't have done the round trip more than about 8 times - any more than that and where wouldn't have been anywhere to stop in the system.

like i went to a keynote talk earlier this semester that was purportedly about modeling cellular responses to perturbations
but it was literally just "hey look we made an ML model that predicts cell responses real good. this is important bc it lets us build virtual cells"
and i'm like.... bro.... isn't the point of the model to be informative about how the system actually works

The whole point of the classification model i was working on was doing attribution coloring on the model and input data, which then pointed at what parts of the proteins the model was "looking at" the most and, with proper biology background, corroborate that the predictive model is paying attention to known mechanisms!
