I occasionally think about how children would experience growing up on Hell's Gate.

They'd be a very small % of the population - as Lancer humans live longer, even out in Calliope. On top of which, it seems like a fair few people come to Calliope, but very few people leave. Meaning that the main method of population replacement is immigration. Not surprising, considering it's a pretty bad place to live, over-all, and probably dissuades most people from having children.

So would an unattended child at GMS_GENERIC_BAR be a nuisance? Or a rare spot of hope for the future? Or a bit of both?

I have other thoughts about the demographics of the system, but the melatonin is really hitting and I have work tomorrow and also going on about birth rates makes me sound like one of the crazy twitter fascists

One piece of advice I found very freeing was in OG Apocalypse World: make NPCs that are just not that complicated. (very early wallflower spoilers, sorta) ||Castor Fielding likes solving engineering problems and smoking real tobacco cigarettes and that's like his whole deal||, he doesn't have to be deeper than that

Also, it's vitally important that (wallflower spoilers) ||if/when Egregorian anthrophile William William is introduced, they should be wearing a trucker cap with some statement about the nature of the relationship between themself, women and fish. This is not in the book, but I personally consider it canon.||

@regal comet asked a lil bit ago about marriage traditions in calliope and Fors fromt eh same game was too. I wanted to sit and think about it but got nowhere for a while. Then I talked with my partner and we had an intense hour long discussion that gave me a lot to work with. I wrote a bunch of stuff, ran it by vex (she loves it), so here's what I got so far:

All the stations have population loss partly offset by the steady influx of the sort of people who need Line of Sight Names, but the outlanders don't have that to the same degree

I mean, it's all kinda there. Kristiaan hated her, hated that she was (as far as they saw it) going unpunished. The others all figured... yeah she did bad things but she's really sorry about it and she's our friend and what good would locking her away be? She wants to help make things right. ||She is still a member of the faith, even if she turned her back on the Cult. And Feather still talks to her (magus bond powers). The team all thinks the whole apocalypse cult thing is silly but ultimately she's still on their side.||

Like I said before, everything has to do more with her specific crimes. Being a member of the faith is nothing, Char is a member of the faith. ||Being in the inner cult as a spy is more egregious, but if she came out with it at the start of chapter 2 they'd be fine with her. It's because she worked against the team that it was bad.||(ch2)

What worked for us is that I was communicating everything with the players from the start. I wouldn't even touch a-spy-in-the-party if I didn't get their consent and buy-in up front. We worked together to find a story that made sense but was also fun for all of us. Threatening those actions is one thing, going through with it because "It's what she would do" is antifun. Y'gotta see it like you're both writing a story together and trying to make it one you both really like.

Now as for ideas on what that story might look like...

||First of all, you should probably be able to agree that she can't hold it against Serenity if she joins the faith. Calamity's thinking about it in my game. Bunzi's Char is a member. There's a shrine to the one on Hell's Gate, and they AREN'T with the cult. Jerry won't take religious persecution kindly (though that too could be fun, her getting held back and maybe even yelled at by jerry?) but you can still have animosity and little backbiting comments and a lack of trust. But again, she'll probably come off as a bit bigotted over that!||

||But if Serenity is thinking of joining the cult to change it from within? I'd have a lot more questions as to how you think that might work, even assuming your team was cool with it. Are you going to leave the party and go do cult stuff full time? Stay with the party as a spy? You know from the top that the campaign is about fighting the cult, that's int he elevator pitch. If you're trying to join so you can get more info and maybe use it against them, that's one thing. But actively switching sides is kinda walking off the game yourself, even if you don't get imprisoned for it.||

but yeah (ch3?) ||i have no idea how the internal structure of the cult works and how much or little you need to invest into it- i'm assuming a lot from your response, so in reality what i think will happen is that she tries to turn the faith against the cult and kind of shake people out of it. all she knows now is that ignatius is not fully wrong (all i know too) and wants to learn more. i do think, as funny as it is to say, elizabeth being bigoted about the religious thing is oddly in character given her hotheaded and violent nature and could be fun to play around, it's just something the rest won't just agree with since i don't think they fully understand that the faith is not the same as the cult||

||serenity has made comments about elizabeth fitting in with the hellhounds despite elizabeth's absolute hatred for them, so her turning that around on serenity seems pretty fuckin fair to me lmfao||

it will definitely be an internal conflict for her, no doubt. ||he's a bad bad (sexy) man but fuck what if he's on to something???||

(ch3)||That's my favorite part about Ignatius, it's hard for most players to say he's just wrong and bad. He's sympathetic in many ways. When you first meet him he's talking about a LOT of truths, even. And there's things you'll learn later that really help. Hell, he's on a full bore possible redemption arc in my game|| Eleonor is your gm right?

in my defense with all of this (ch2) ||she was considering joining the faith since early/mid chapter 2- it really speaks to her but now i think she's reached a point where she's so fucking done she needs something||

||There's not much canon to the structure of the cult, so it's largely up to the GM. CH2 should make it clear that they have a lot of structure though. In general they recruit from within the numbers of the general faith and work with them as a cover, but they're not the same thing. Generally not a good look to hate an entire faith for the actions of an extremist subfaction. Serenity should be able to join the faith easily, joining the cult is harder. They clearly can operate in the shadows, suggesting they aren't going to be wide open to a double agent infiltrator. They don't pick people without them doing enough to be clearly invested. However... as a member of the SRT Serenity is a "huge get" for the cult. If they believe that she's honestly turning. That's going to be hard. Clandestine operations require a certain level of paranoia. ||
