I think people (and by people I mean me) tend to go with familiarity when in an unfamiliar environment. Sci fi settings tend to feel very unfamiliar for a while and so people would gravitate towards the (usually) most familiar, which is humans.

that's effectively what technophile is for, but personally I thik you can take NHPs in your mech narratively if they have zero mechanical effect. Like they can't pilot a mech, they're just there. I'd allow it without having to invest anything. Expanded Compartment at most if you want their casket on board, same as allowing any human (or moff) friend to hitch a ride.

His mech was sabotaged by (ch2 spoiler)||Bondarchuk|| and Calamity was the one that hit him hard enough for the armor to buckle. It's mostly a physical burden, came up once or twice that he's not quite at 100% but never quite in an interesting way I'm afraid.
Pear has the burden "Broken Bottles and Shattered Dreams" after Mission 4 caused him to fall off the wagon again. My players voluntarily took stress when they felt it was appropriate and he ticked over after (m4 spoilers) ||getting trapped in a repeating loop simulation of the day his lover was killed, thousands of times, never able to save him, never able to stop it.||

Pear's burden came up as difficulty on a Stay Cool roll while everybody was at the GMS Standard Bar. He failed the check, but Gabriel used bond powers to give him a reroll and helped keep him clean.
Calamity's burdens hit on almost any check, they both are really broad and based on a lack of confidence.

As I've heard, many gms here have done IGF after solistice rain and such with starting at ll2. You need to do some minor adjustments for tier once you hit ll5 but other than that it's pretty consistent

There was a actual play group that came to the system and met with Jerry right away, and were negotiating the intial task of finding a printer part as "so we'll do it if you give us a ship out of the system". It... didn't feel right at all.

Now, if the PCs are on the run from a previous job, and choose to lay low in Calliope? Maybe timeskip forward a few months, let them get to know people and places and care about the system? That's going to work a whole lot better.
The other problem is that IGF is very much intended for LL0 characters, and will, once the other acts are finished, go all the way to LL12. coming in with established characters throws that a bit. There's ways to do it. We get the question fairly often, even. I should make an FAQ some time.

You can run IGF A1 as a standalone. It's not hard to take the finale and say "that's it, you're done, you saved the day" and ignore Act 2. (I think you'll be ignoring peak, but I'm biased). You can buff the fights a little and make it tier 2 or 3 and fit a party of any level. You don't even have to have the players really spend time in the system building relationships if they are at least willing to engage with it on their terms. The SRT could be hot-swapped with a union assigned Lancer team here to help out. They can meet and connect with the setting as the game progresses. It could be done. It's just not what the book is intending, but that's okay.

We just did a big rewrite that cut a ton of content. It was necessary, and will help, but it broke some things in the process. I'm running Act2 at my own table right now and we're learning a bit as I hit things that feel unstable or incomplete.

First thing, you gotta understand Kraken. Kraken is aromantic, asexual, and autistic. They're high functioning but very sheltered, both by effort and coincidence. They just... don't care for media? So while they're smart and able to more or less navigate social situations, the idea of personal relationships is mostly alien to them. They never had any interest, so they never looked into it. They're starting to understand friendship, and even coming around on the idea of family (if it's found, they have a lot of bad associations with their natural family other than one not-so-bad brother). My partner describes them as "Me, but with no mask and no filter"
The party got invited to a party. This is at the end of chapter 5 so if you know you know. They were each told to bring a +1, and everybody else had someone in mind. The team as a whole wanted to bring Loki (who, lets be honest, might have been invited anyway) and Kraken volunteered to take him. This probably would have been a straightforward, businesslike transaction except... Someone wanted to pull a little prank. (end of ch5 spoilers)||Switch wanted to pull a prank on their brother. They knew Kraken pretty well, they've been spending time with the party since the second combat in chapter 1, so they had the perfect way of setting Kraken off.||
The prank consisted of mentioning to Kraken in a catty, offhand manner that it's a good thing it's just a friendly excuse to bring Loki to the party, because Kraken wouldn't be very good at romance. Kraken took it as rude, not because that's a kind rude thing to say to someone you know is aro-ace, but because there's an implication that they might be bad at something. It had exactly the desired effect. Kraken threw themselves into researching this mysterious "romance" and how to be The Best at it.
The omninet was no good. Everybody there seems to be crazy. Besides, they have their new family to learn from. Calamiy first, she's clearly winning at romance because she has more girlfriends than anybody else. Being Kraken, they ask the wrong question the wrong way, and take the wrong lesson from it.
"Calamity! What do people bring on dates?"
"I unno.. uh, chocolates and flowers?"
"Okay!" runs off, leaving a confused Calamity behind
Kraken then proceeds to aquire food items and vegetation. Loki wakes up and there's a steaming hot fresh burrito on his bedside table next to a cactus that wasn't there before.
Next Kraken went to Pear, who has a boyfriend and maybe something going on with his boyfriend's theyfriend. He told kraken that it's good to spend time with someone you're dating, get close to them, get to know them. Kraken then proceeded to stalk Loki for days. They'd hide in the vents to his room while he played video games, follow him discreetely when he went out and about, and of course tehy kept sneaking him more burritos. At one point they gave him chips and a soda while he stepped away from a game to got to the bathroom. When he say back down, he took a sip, unpaused the game and said "Thanks Kraken" out loud. That night Kraken slept in the vent over Loki's bed.
Finally Kraken went to Grandpa Gabriel. He's obviously not very good at romance, Kraken decided. He only goes on dates with Rita, and only rarely, and they don't even consider it dating. Neither of them has time for that. Still, they want more advice. He tells Kraken that communication is key, and that they need to talk with Loki. Kraken disregards that. That sounds wrong. Gabriel doesn't talk with Rita much at all, and Loki and Kraken seem to communicate just fine without talking, thank you.
Finally they asked Siren. They should have just gone to Siren from the start! Kraken is more comfortable with NHPs than humans, Siren is super smart, AND she has at least as many girlfriends as Calamity does! Siren saw Kraken's conversation with Calamity, and heard about their talk with Pear. She's more careful to get Kraken to stick around and talk about it in a more direct and serious manner. Talking about how a relationship is between two people, so Loki is the person they need to talk to most. Get to know him and what he likes, but also, find out what he wants out of this. Don't do thinks because it's "what you're supposed to do", do things because it's what you and he want to do. For that matter, figure out what you want, and how to achieve that in a way that respects Loki's needs and desires too.
Kraken had to think about that for a while. A long while. When they finally crawled back into Loki's vent, he was writing something on the computer but without looking behind him he said "Oh, hey Kraken. Missed you."
The Party went well. Kraken came in taking the lead, with Loki hanging on their arm. (End of Act 1 spoiler)||Elske was almost dying with excitement. She was already losing it over Calamity and Aveline's whole thing (she knew more about it than most and might have started screaming when she heard the news) but Kraken... They were with the knights for a time. Elske still loves Kraken as... maybe a sort of cousin or feral cat that comes by every now and then. She's very fond of Kraken, and she's known them for years, but she's never known them to have a date. That alone constituted an incredible birthday present.||
Loki and Kraken continued to... date? be together? after the party, and are still together now. They recently had more of an open discussion about it and it seems to be working well, but that's more storytime for later.
