I assume that Asphodelian clothing is a lot more utilitarian in design do to the nature of the planet being so hostile. Lots of jumpers and ease to breathe in clothing because of the humidity. Certain NPC's from that region wear turtlenecks and the like but others have more casual wear since they live inside the dome with more temperature control.

_First of all, Charlotte Montaigne is not her actual birth name. She was never given one. She was the product of a small sister company to SSC providing Karrakin nobles with their preferred designer children. One noble, decided they wanted a large batch of embryos to select from to be their child and heir. Unfortunately, or perhaps not? Quatra wasn't one of the selected.

The small company had about a dozen children to be born that were not selected and since the contracts stated all other organic material not selected was forfeit to ownership of the company....they got to work. SSC saw them as a potential grab bag to sample and test several different genetic alterations for general purposes and if any of them came to term then that was just a positive outcome.

She was just one of the tree that made it to a proper birth. To say the children that came out as a result were forever changed is an understatement. The three children were test subject for a multitude of different genetic rewrites for a multitude of reasons. This this company was so small there was far less oversight for multiple researchers all trying different methods to acquire some desired result.

They were rolling the dice with each one to see what each got in the end.

Ocho, Tres, and Quatra were all heavily changed from their original genetic parentage.

Ocho was designed to be a near perfect male specimen with a hard code for more durable bones and muscle tissue.

Tres was tested to see recovery of faulty bone density leading to her having a life time of mobility issues.

The contractor hired removed the facility, saved the children and asked to put them in protective custody since they were all just babies upon operational competition. _

One of my recent characters (In the halo verse) was a fella named Alezander 'Rook' Morazova

Mid to late forties, Blond hair cut into a Mohawk, handlebar mustache, and striking Blue eyes. Built like a brick shit house and towering at the height of Seven Foot Four. He had been a merc, gun for hire for nearly his entire adult life and had gathered the reputation of dependable work (Hence the Nickname/callsign of Rook). Overall his entire build is a towering brick shit out, equipment being a bloody minigun and more armor then the Spartans from halo.

But from that simplistic doing Went into his family being his father and madre divorced rather young, mother had taken full custody and was a hard motherfucker creating the foundations of the brickhouse of Rook. Then from there detailing the.... Health complications he went through around his mid thirties as I heavily based a lot of his physical features and aspects on Andre the Giant, to where in his mid to later thirties his heart nearly detonated causing him to.... Take a rather drastic measure to keep.... His job going by agreeing to do a basically back alley gene job which beyond like five fellas was a total failure and either due to Rook's luck, body being just big enough to handle the changes and trauma (Aka me spending five of my seven luck to get this stuff) he survived.

Which on this complication he is an old and weathered aging basically super soldier working for a faction called the URF (United Rebel Front) fighting against the UNSC right before the deployment of Spartans. Which brings me to my last bit, the fact this bastard has a daughter, so, four years before his heart nearly exploded he got into a relationship that eventually spawned a daughter which he and his rapidly married wife named "Sophia" and..... Rook for a time settled down and tried to live a roughly normal life, he had mechanical skills but didnt like working in purley mechanical fields, he was strong but hated mindless labor, he was decently smart but couldn't take the abysmal work of offices. Which as the stress built and built ruined his relationship with his wife, spiraling into a rapidly devolving situation that the two hated one another with a passion.... And due to this and further he nearly had his heart explode causing him to take the procedure and.... Get back into the field he felt most comfortable in. Its been 15 years since he had seen his daughter last, and about 9 since he last spoke to her with every day adding further and further pressure upon himself but convincing himself it's worth it because he's putting away nearly three thirds of his revenue for his little girl.

Which is where it gets Rook the aged super soldier with heart problems, a ruined relationship with his daughter, and a absolute massive bounty from the UNSC for his..... actions against them (He supplexed a Spartan through a window)

personally I think bond exp does serve a valid purpose but it does need fixing imo.

Personally I allow bonds to be acquired between any sessions provided the previous session didn't end mid combat and I do a progression of bond level entirely distinct from LL or narrative timing. + throwing bonus exp to players who have fallen significantly behind the pack.

Helps that you can pretty reliably get 1 or 2 out of 3 exp each session from just playing a character who has a backstory relevant to their actions in the present. Which tbh, kinda the point of backstory.

I like EXP systems that reward playing character traits and participating in the process. But the way the numbers work, I just don't like the application in lancer. Either you're guaranteed to get your one power per level (especially in a game like mine where I slip in a dozen extra narrative sessions), or you manage to miss out once in a while which feels awful, especially if you're the only one in the party that didn't' get a power

igf is somewhat an exception to this rule because it has an exceptionally good narrative/setting when it comes to hooking player backstory into the world and encouraging player character investment in the npcs around them but in general I think Lancer's a system that really needs something to help incentivise players to rp (like bond exp). Obviously if your table already likes to rp (or worse bond exp hurts their rp) then bond exp isn't a rule you should use but broadly I feel the way that lancer otherwise has lots of mech combat rules but very barebones rules for everything else really does implicitly encourage players (and GMs) by default to only really engage with the mech combat - especially for more mechanically driven players.

Now as I've said earlier, I don't run bond exp the way it is out of the box because yeah the way it is by default doesn't really work imo. Particularly about when you can level up (me removing the once per LL expectation from it is more a matter of personal taste as a GM).

So Aisaan, the ever kind and helpful personality they were showed the old man around, and during their walk talked about how they admired the work that Lancer did. The work that Albatross did. And how they wished to some day be that kind of change out there. Maybe not to change a path of a war, but to be a hero who people could depend upon. And at the end of the day before leaving the station, the man told them a secret.

They were an old member of the Albatross, one who came to see the Cradle of humanity one last time, before leaving for their retirement after a long and impactful career. And they gave Aisaan something, that forever changed the child's destiny.

From that day forward, Aisaan studied the best way to become that change out on the Diaspora and whenever their will wavered, the shine of that golden pin got them back on track.
In due time, Aisaan signed up for Union military to train to be a soldier, against the wishes of their father who wanted them to live the quiet life. Maybe they would had stayed in one piece if they did so, but that matters not anymore.

During their training, Aisaan took to the training of becoming a combat engineer with affinity for explosives. On the mech front... they did not perform that well. Above average, but nowhere close to being a Lancer. But that would change soon, following an incident involving fellow classmate that almost took their life.

During a set of mech combat training for melee and closer quarters situation on Mars' surface, Aisaan was paired with the gearhead of the class, who had... without permit, uptuned their nerfed training rig's performance to levels to match that of a combat-grade everest. And tragedy struck. With a force of a warhammer, that during the training from this classmate came onto the cockpit of Aisaan's machine... and caved it in. The lighter alloys of the training rig crumbled like tin before the hammer, as it crushed Aisaan below their waist, horrifying all present and ending the training as their remainds were hurriedly taken to medical, where they were to be rebuilt while the class itself was to be put on hold for inspections and investigations.

In due time, they woke up with everything below their waist having been replaced with high grade bionics and cybernetics... which gave then a feeling of something being right for the first time in their life. And in due time, they continued their studies on Mars, having been transferred to a new unit, specifically made of those who were over 40% cybernetic.

During the last parts of their training, they found out that this unplanned augmentation had rocketed their performance in the mech to what was seen acceptable as a Lancer, as their human nerves were largely replaced with data fibers along with processors to share the mental load. This only fed to the new sense of hunger that had awoken in them... and with their new unit, they found out about FBC, an operation to transfer one to a machine. Near full liberation from failings of flesh. The pain, slowness, and almost excessive maintenance where machinery could be rebuilt.
And so, they seeked this operation out, and found a base frame from SSC catalogue that clicked with them perfectly. It was small, unlike Aisaan who in their old body was over 6 feet, while this new one would be 5 feet on the dot. No more towering over others and being center of attention for a matter of their flesh, but by matter of personal choise.
Once it was done and complete, they were transferred, once again, to a new unit. The "Ghosts in Machines" unit, all members composed over 80% of cybernetics.

This is where Aisaan's fate, once again could have split, with them being sent to Boundary Garden, or attached to a force sent to Dawnline Shore...
But for unknown reason to them, they were detached from their unit, and sent on an escort sortie aboard an union carrier as part of the security detail for an diplomat.
...Odd first task as an soldier, but as the order came, they followed. And such, they departed for Diaspora, for an world 20 lightyears from Calliope...
It was... few quiet months after departing from nearest blinkgate, and heading for their destination out in the Diaspora until... tragedy and struck. Once again.
The ship, during its cruise had raised full alarm, to get all aboard to their stations. And as Aisaan and their fellow pilots were making their way to get dressed with hardsuits, expecting to drop from nearlight into a combat zone, they were horrified as all air, across numerous decks were vented into the vacuum of space. Some barely survived and got their gear on, many didn't. Aisaan on the other hand thanks to their new body, could withstand the raw vacuum without their hardsuit... even if it was preferrable to be worn ontop of the hardened chassis.
As one of the first mech pilots, Aisaan reached their everest, the Third Pillar Promise in the hangar of the carrier and booted the machine up, and immediately contacted the wing command of the carrier.
Next thing they remember, is waking up to Third Pillar Promise's computer giving an alarm that the cockpit would be about to be depressurised, as something was on the exterior hull of the everest.

Now, we will change our POV for a moment, to someone else. To the crew of the Ripdoctor, an converted cargohauler made into a mining and salvage rig for Hells Gate... and on the usual spot where they got their goods they found an... everest? A proud and imposing machine, drifting in the same old debris field that they had been to many times before. The hull was untouched by the harshess of the debris field, and far beyond something that aside from select few could get. A latest generation machine, painted red in its chest, blue in its arms, and white on the spiked helmet and the legs of the machine. A jackpot, for how much would such a thing go considering its unblemished exterior.
They soon enough, reach this machine and study it before finding a manual emergency latch hidden underneath the neck of the everest to pop the cockpit open. Hell, they might even be able to just fly it into the cargobay rather than wrestling with the towhooks and-
They are staring down a barrel of a 0g combat rifle, and pair of green, terrified eyes staring back at them.

And we shall now return to Aisaan, in the moment of their awakening.
They hear the boots and the mag-gloves clunking against the hull, and they get their rifle ready, pointed at the door panel of the round cockpit of the machine. The everest itself was in low power mode, so it wouldn't get moving fast enough to deter those who were on it already.
And the door opens.
The unknown person in a heavy and clunky pathwork suit recoils in panic as they see android waiting there just as Aisaan's hardware managed to find the right frequency to for a chat.
A while goes by, as the Ripdoctor and Third Pillar Promise stare each other down while the respective pilots of the machines talk it out, and Aisaan finds out that they were in Calliope. In a system that they did not know about in the least.
Eventually, they come to agreement to bring Aisaan to Hells Gate, where they were brought near immediately to meet up with Jerry. After all, union soldier with an everest just appearing in the system was bizarre alongside confirmed disappearance of the ship that Aisaan was stations aboard, and following eventual negations with the captain of UNS-CV Thames and Union Naval Command, Aisaan is 'stationed' onto Hell's Gate. After all, having a trained soldier with an everest at the ready would be handy for a place such as Hell's Gate, wouldn't you say?

Regaaaaardless of my own shortcomings, I will do my best to recite Léo (Invader)'s lore (ping @ancient crag)

So, Léo Clovers, also known as callsign Invader, or camyleon on the muse. He was born and raised on a core world, a planet named Arsène somewhere along the Himalaya line about a month removed from the nearest blink station. It's a relatively young place where mechs and mech-related things (including sports, which Léo is an occasional fan of, specifically races), and it benefits fully from the union utopia. He grew up in a nice family with few issues (some hang ups, some people with a story of substance abuse, still fairly stable all things considered). Started working as a software technician in mech maintenance at around 20. Despite being a fan of mechs and working on and around them regularly he never really expressed any desire to actually pilot one for real. He worked for about 2 years without any major incident.

Then disaster strikes. On a late night shift working in the hangar where only he and one of his colleagues/friends called Loriel (or Laure. Or Laurent. Or Laurie. It varies.) the site suddenly locks down. Doors close, lights go dark, emergency lights come on, alarms are blaring, and the mechs in the hangar they were working come to life, screaming, and begin tearing everything apart. All of a sudden Léo is stuck in the middle of ten mechs in an all-out battle, and Loriel suddenly vanished, meaning he is alone. Naturally, he tries to hide, panicked. One of the mechs threaten him with a weapon, but it's arm gets torn to shreds by a nexus weapon, he then gets grabbed by a pair of manipulators and shoved inside of the cockpit of the mech that just saved (?) him.

The inside of the cockpit is inky black, there are voices that are speaking to him, and he feels something intruding in his mind.
The voices sounded as such:

After that, lights out. He is found the next day after everything has calmed down still inside the mech, unconscious, all systems turned off except for life support and a casket behind him. The weird and worrying thing is that none of the mechs in this hangar contained caskets the day before. At most COMP/CON units, and yet now here they are.

As to why all of this happened or if this mysterious colleague who vanished is connected to it, I dunno, I haven't decided on that at all.

REGARDLESS, Léo is left a very changed person after this incident (which will then be refered to as Incident CF-443). Someone who used to be optimistic, carefree and a jokester is now an anxious, shivering and tired mess. He keeps seeing moving shadows in the corner of his eyes, locks himself up occasionally and barely gets any sleep because of night terrors. This, turns out, was caused by the voices that spoke to him when he was shoved inside the cockpit, The Hundred faces, undefined class NHP, altering his brain structure while digging around to try and understand how the human mind works.
After some time of his situation not improving, he goes begging for two things. One, to learn how to pilot a mech, and two, to have the Everest he was found in after the incident. While his requests are initially refused it ends up being accepted after a while, after which he starts sleeping in the cockpit directly, which seems to calm the night terrors and allow him to actually get some proper rest.

Inside the mech is an NHP as well, the same one he was found with after the incident, and it seems to call itself Laplace. A smug, self important know it all that speaks to people by mimicking their own voices back at them. Claims to know Léo very well, and says he's able to help him get better.
In reality, this is a constructed identity. The NHP in the casket is The hundred faces, though it is currently in a somewhat dormant state and a character named Laplace is currently acting in its stead. Laplace was made to be obsessed with gathering data and to love people dearly (which will come back to bite THF in the ass later but not for now)

Now at this point is where we were supposed to go into OSR but ended up going for IGF instead. Laplace tells Léo that he has a plan to fix his mind, which before the change meant joining the DoJ for a bit, but now it means leaving for the long rim effective immediately to find "something". He won't say what specifically, but he assures Léo that it's the best compromise between ease of access, chances of success, minimal suffering and time before completion. Léo being barely able to function in what used to be his homeworld because of constant panic, agrees.
They then both leave for Calliope, boarding the first ship that would take them there, going into stasis for the transport, and awakening again on Hell's gate where everything is awful but at least Laplace grand plan (that he still won't tell the specifics of because "if I tell you you might change something and i'll have to calculate everything a second time anyway")
He has trouble adjusting, eerything is awful and keeps breaking, money exists, and he very much is not used to be living in space instead of on solid land. He picks up sigdiving as a hobby because it doesn't require talking to people, and pick up the pseudonym (and then callsign) Invader because that's most of what he does while piloting. Invade.
Eventually, Jerry announces that he's putting together something called the SRT. Invader volonteers, looking almost professional during the whole thing because Laplace made him learn multiple entire scripts by heart to be sure he got the position.
And that's where chapter 1 starts.
