For context (spoiled for my players just in case and any other possible spoilers) || Jackev Soner is a bit of a wonder kid hacker on Hell's Gate. As part of his backstory, shortly before the start of the campaign, he cracked a low ranking Circuit member's systems (where he got the code for his Lich licenses) and in doing so basically found the chat logs between S1GN4L, DRIVETRAIN, and all those people looking for the spatial anomaly early. CAUSTIC caught on to this, and tried to upload a basilisk to Jackev's system to kill him, but he managed to sever the connection before it finished.

So CAUSTIC is aware of him, I can do something with that potentially. I'd like to give a hint towards this not being the end of Capella exactly, visions of alternate timelines, etc, but I'm also considering having an early run in with either Feather, the Crone, or both. I don't want to give TOO much of the game away though, so I'm really struggling deciding what information to pass along to him. ||

It can try and send more attacks, but TRIPLEPOINT is locking things down in paranoia, and it could be fun for the Player's harasser to suddenly go quiet without him being able to figure out where they went.||

(CH5) || Since Jackev is going Lich, you can make it clear that any visions are alternate timelines to keep a level of doubt going. Capella's return could be from a timeline where he didn't die. (which... is how feather's resurrections works but still) I actually posted a whole bunch of alt-timelines that I ran scenes for in ch4 that might be good inspo for you. starts around here: #1059603134504255528 message ||

(Act 2 spoiler!) || You could have visions of Andros attacking Hell's Gate along with the cult, tearing his way through Karrakin forces. If you want extra emotional impact, it could be Capella fighting Jerry... if enough other visions are clearly not possible in the current timeline that might keep players from guessign that Capella will come back. Though they might guess that the campaign is going to throw them into other timelines where Capella is around. Think about alternative histories for all of your players! Come up with "what if" scenarios that cause PCs to go into wild roles and unusual places||

Who's ready for more tragic storytime

I can even get away without spoiler tagging too much, since it's mostly about specific events for my team that aren't in the book (though some book things are tied in...)

If you're reading without the context of my last several storytimes you're gonna wonder what the hell happened in that last chapter. Notably, it hits every group different and I made sure to absolutely grind them into paste emotionally.. and more that a few people have hinted that ch4 can be a lot, so I'm not worried.

Heading home from chapter 4, the team is... broken. Calamity was almost non-responsive until she snapped at Siren as she tried to take care of her. They had a moment of intimacy until Calamity's grief and pain caused her to lash out at Siren. Gabriel started ignoring everything and catching up on his work. Pear fell off the wagon and started drinking again. Kraken tried to steal his bottles but he found more. Previously when he was struggling with his addictions Calamity playfully told him if she ever caught him drinking she'd kick his ass. This time though, he walked into her room. She was awake, and watched as he rummaged through the bottles and took one that was still half full. Their eyes met for a moment, but neither of them said anything as he left. Kraken made it through the chapter mostly okay, but had no way of handling the problems of their team. So they wanted to take a trip to Three Sisters for personal (Act 2 spoiler)||Mind told them to go to Amphion during a TRIPLEPOINT simulation.|| reasons. Siren was still worried about Calamity so she didn't want to take Kraken, and suggested hooking them up with a civilian transport. Jerry already promised them all a significant amount of leave to recover from this.

They land back at Hell's Gate. Pear stumbles off, Gabriel is walking with purpose talking on two calls at once. Calamity had been living on the 'Tooth for a while, but grabbed a rucksack of things and headed for the door when they touched down. Siren stopped her. "I... don't think you should be alone right now."

Calamity snapped back "I don't give a fuck what you think." and stormed off the ship.

Siren yelled after her, "Fine. FINE!" and then turned to Kraken. "Stick around, we're going to Amphion.". Kraken was happy for the company, but removed their mech for the Tooth and left Moira on Hell's Gate. They still haven't talked after what happened...

Gabriel went to his office, Pear and Calamity disappeared into the bowels of the station, and Siren and Kraken took a moment to resupply before embarking for Three Sisters.

A good chunk of this session in particular we worked out ahead of time. There was a lot of adlibbing but the broad strokes were predetermined. These sessions play out almost like a bunch of little plays that I've rehearsed privately with each player, and then we perform for the group. I ran several micro-scenes as a sort of montage. Jerry met with Gabriel and he was doing far worse than usual. Neither of them were sure if the SRT was even going to still exist after this. Calamity Went Diving and ended up trying out some unknown drugs. Pear showed up at GMS Standard Pattern Bar already hammered, and BARTENDER MOTHERFUCKER had to throw him out. In flight, Siren asked Kraken to help with some sticky joints in her subaltern's arm and she used the time to vent about Calamity a bit. Cut to Calamity in a gutter somewhere, her own arm jamming up. She's too fucked up to fix it, and doesn't even have any tools. So now she's stoned AND she doesn't have an arm. Gabriel volunteered to cover Cal and Pear's organizations; meeting with Stomp regarding the pirate rehabilitation efforts and Rat to discuss The Icebreaker Sexworker's union expanding efforts to other stations. Gabriel got to roll for them on organization upkeep.

On Three Sisters, Siren (start of chapter 5 spoiler)||started getting the nearlight bolt suite upgrades installed on the Dragon's Tooth||. Kraken, meanwhile, (Act 2 spoilers) ||Followed a trail of clues left on public monitors that brought them to a small secure part of the station where they could talk with Mind through a subaltern. It warned them that SSC was coming to the system, likely looking for it, and told them that it would reach out again later when it had a chance to get secure connections to Hell's Gate. It hinted that BARTENDER MOTHERFUCKER might be involved, setting the seeds for later.||

Pear and Calamity (on the rare occasion she couldn't find more stims to keep sleep at bay) both started having dreams about (Golden Hand quest part 2 spoiler) ||the bleeding skull||, but honestly that's better than the nightmares they were each already suffering from and trying to chemically drown out. Gabriel worked himself into exhaustion again, and Stoneleigh picked him up and brough him to his room to get some sleep. He woke up in a panic because there were too many things to do for him to be sleeping, but she already took care of several items. Calamity on the other hand woke up surprisingly well? It was the only little bit of sleep she's gotten in several days though. Then the headache hit. She was in an actual bed for once, though she didn't know whose it was. She could hear the shower running in the other room, splashing with the sounds of someone bathing. A subaltern walked in, and Calamity realized she wasn't wearing anything under the sheet. The subaltern introduced herself for apparently the second time as Harmony, and named the woman in the shower as Galanades. Apparently the three of them had a great time last night, but Harmony suggested Cal get dressed and move on before Galanades comes back out to avoid some unspoken awkwardness. She helped Cal find her clothing which was distributed throughout the apartment, gave her some painkillers, and sent her on her way.

Jerry and Gabriel start to freak out because nobody's seen Pear or Cal for a while...

(Chapter 5 spoilers)||This was about when The early elements of ch5 kicked in. The hellhound remnants led by Sparrow Min show up at Hell's Gate and Gabriel has to handle it alone (or, without the SRT. Stomp and Jerry were there). Rat calls Gabriel in a panic; Pear was the first one he tried to call about Switch missing, but Pear's missing too. Rita calls Gabriel about Loki being kidnapped openly, and Gabriel suddenly worries that there's something big going down. The Cult is kidnapping people and nobody's seen Calamity and Pear for a few days? Jerry has a panic attack the moment he's told, and agrees to put in all resources on looking for the missing members of the team. Siren and Kraken are told to come back at best speed, so the nearlight bolt gets put to the test.||

There's a big manhunt on searching Hell's Gate for the missing members of the SRT. Kraken, Siren, Gabriel and Jerry called in several favors and friends, and I had a list of about 16 people involved in the search. Pear and Calamity find each other first. He's too drunk to stand and she's on a whole mix of substances, but they both react with hostility. She remembers that she's supposed to kick his ass for drinking, and he's pissed that she'd come after him like that when she's riding stims and who knows what else. They fight, but neither of them has much strength. They get a few soft blows in before collapsing on each other. They laugh ruefully about their situation and how pathetic they both are, but in that connection they find a little bit of strength. The two start making their way back to the more civilized parts of the station. One carried the other until they passed out, and the other would wake and carry them until the process repeated. I rolled on the list of people searching, and it was wonderfully appropriate that Siren was the one who won. She found them as Calamity was just about to faint again from carrying Pear. "Hey... sky lady..." out cold
She notified the search party, and the session ended with Kraken and Jerry coming to form a big group hug (and then get these morons over to med bay)

Then 2024 rolled around, I'd come off the back of reading Ian M. Bank's culture novels, in combination with a growing dissatisfaction with 40k made me seek out scifi settings that weren't complete crapsacks

so I found lancer, and then found that I already had a copy due to the aforementioned bundle

and then I fell in love

I think it comes with a select few societal expectations you are supposed to be at but they were established by people way before us that had not only way more financial ability and significantly less obstacles to navigate to get to those expectations.

On the one hand, you should recognize where you are and if it is something you want to acheive. On the other, you still want to be seen as someone of your age group.

I think that's kind of why I like how living on the gate is. You are given a very limited amount of space and can create more comradere among the neighbors all helping one another out. Like a apartment block that all know one another of tight nit family/friends

I started roleplaying in nintendo chat rooms around 1996 or so, and ttrpgs with 2nd ed ad&d in 1998. didn't really get into it though till I got my own copy of 3rd ed. Played a ton of that, shifted to World of Darkness, played an obscene amount of that (including running a V:tM larp with 50+ participants for 5 years) . Started a game of IGF, just wanted to drop a message and thanks in general:
The PCs are:
An Ex-Harrison Armory soldier who was sent out here as part of a contract, and after arriving and finding out that the place sucked, HA just cut ties and decided leaving behind assets and recruiting was simpler than retrieving this PC.
An Ex-pit fighter for sport whose team got stuck out in the Long Rim and landed in Calliope, maintaining a marriage with his husband but ignoring his sorted past.
A lifer mechanic who is a worry wort, just trying to get by.
An Agricultural mechanic//handy man stuck on station.
And an absentminded influencer who had a job at the print facility until she accidentally wasn't paying attention to a print order that had defective code that sent the printing into the ground smashing it. The literal reason the printer broke.
I offered them to show off their character's daily lives as character intros, and one of them volunteered to work at the print shop, and I hadn't told them that the printer breaking was a plot point yet.

I've been text roleplaying for a while because I "totally wasn't a furry, I promise" and writing fiction for most of my life, since like 2006? I never really got ttrpgs until my ex ran a quick game of GURPS in 2015 and it was ass, fit with a DMPC and everything. I liked the idea of making a real living character in a space and fell in love. A few months later I ran a quick few Call of Cthulhu sessions, they went pretty well for my first game. I ended up running starfinder in 2018(?) for a group of friends because I loved the aesthetic of it and the rules were fine .. I didn't know any better. I didn't really get a grasp on it until the end of chapter 1 and then I really started understanding the place, and my character was born there lmao

Yeah, we did some brief "this place suxks" introduction stuff to the general system they're in and that Hells Gate is not great, and they ran with some player introduction scenes as vignettes that were pretty nice, and by the time we introduced the Streamer character, the printer was shattered and we time skipped forward a week to them being summoned by Jerry for the Rapid Response Team.

My first session did a little bit of narrative, the briefing, then off to the first combat so we could get a taste of things. Everybody at the table including me had not played lancer before. One player had barely played TTRPGs at all. Session two was wrapping up that combat. Session three I turned into a pure narrative episode full of filler moments and life on the station because I felt like I skipped too much early on, and now that we had the taste of mech combat I wanted to highlight the narrative aspects of the game before moving to the next fight.

Which was fun. The Ex-pit fighter's husband got a job at the printer facility on station (a huge upgrade in the labor force), and they celebrated while he was working at a bar. Then one of the other characters was around the bar being a loner post shift, then got paid off by a group of people who wanted his table and him gone. The Agri-engi was fixing up some machines on a hab-ring and showing an apprentice what's going on and had some scene time with that, and then we had the HA guy show off his beat-to-hell-old tank he has (Alt-barb frame) and he has a small squad of soldiers he commands, and then the printer was broken and the streamer was immediately fired.

The Ex-pit fighter's husband volunteered him for the RRT, to try and get him out of a dead-end job, the HA guy got recruited without applying because he's already been working closely with the militia and they were like "we need him", the farmer and mechanic had applied absently not expecting to be hired, and the streamer (Who is technophile, go figure), reached out to any potential positions and landed it (because plot).

The streamer was the only one in the room when Jerry walked in who he didn't address by name as he was checking over files and trying to figure out what everone was good at before debriefing them. And then followed up with the "i'm not pointing any fingers or naming names..." bit.

Okay so guess what my brain won't let go so I'm doing this instead of prep.

Previously I showed how you can set up Monk's Active Tiles to create buttons that users can click on to open journals. This can also work to open lots of things, but I pretty much use it for journals and character sheets (with the "open an actor" action. I draw the buttons on my background and use tiles with transparent textures, but you can just use tiles with a button image if you want.

My landing page has changed a lot lately; this is where it's at currently. I made custom clocks for the Lancer Clocks module to put my player's stress and burdens on there. In the second image I selected every "button" tile I have set up, letting players quickly open their character and mech sheets, or open one of the categories of journal.

Each of these buttons opens a journal page that just contains links to other journals, so I can organize things differently in the journals tab. For instance, I have a journal with every exotic, reserve, or other handout in it, but the "reserves" journal only has links to the items the players currently own (and also tracks how many charges are left where appropriate). This is most notable in the Contacts page, where I have contacts grouped by affiliation. However, the actual journals containing all the NPCs are grouped by chapter, basically as they are in the book.

Normally, yes! If I just did my usual method of a transparent png, there'd be overlap confusion. To resolve that, I took the hexagon from my background and turned it into it's own tile image at like 10% alpha. You can see the outline above, but if I move it out of position it's more obvious:

In the active tile trigger section, you can use "trigger using image instead of border" and it'll ignore the 100% transparent parts of the image when clicking. Hoverover pointer helps here a lot too.

My NPC bios look like this. I'm using html and css to style things a lot, and even pulling colors from the css variables used by the Lancer system: If I change the color theme in the settings, my journals update to match. The uh. Backgrounds stay the same though, because I'm also using Ernie's Modern UI which overrides a lot of things like the journal backgrounds. This can't use the variable settings, so it kinda undermines the other effort. I manually set Ernies to use colors that match the MSNC theme because I like the way it all looks. This gives me a more consistent look and feel between journals and character sheets. (Kraken's regular NPC bio has been "enhanced" since they're a PC)

Here's a template you can use to make NPC bios that look like this. Just replace the relevant bits and set the image url based on how you have your files organized in foundry. You can put html into journals using the Source HTML button in the editor. Foundry will mangle your code tho, so save the template and reuse it, copying form an existing journal will be more difficult.

The UI module for the journals was a big thing I needed tbh, I tried formatting with them before and it just looks so sloppy, so that may help. I think a lot of it is I need to find and settle on a layout to begin even putting stuff on the screen... And uh, that's hard lol

Yeah that. Rather than buttons opening journals, it had navigation, taking players to different screens showing all sorts of stuff. There was an interactive system map with animated planets and sun. Each settlement had it's own hex tile that was hidden until a user clicks the littel icon at the settlement's location. Clicking any of those tiles opened the relevant settlement / planet info page. A lot of fun to make, but in practice it was... a bit much...

My new landing page is meant to be a lot cleaner

act 2 ||It's also diagetic in a way: Union came in after the battle on fort cerberus and gave Hell's Gate a big upgrade to their computer system. When I narrated that development, I did an animated shutdown effect (complete with "it is now safe to shut down your space station") and when it came back up, I had the new UI representing the upgrade. I also switched from foundry v9 to v11 at the same time, so everything got an update. ||
