Okay so session recap: our residential streamer primo was missing, so through various clues, namely investigating his apartment, we found that he had been dragged to the depths of hells gate by some spider subalterns. Serenity went to check in with one of his neighbors and asked "did anything happen last week? Did you hear gunshots?" To which he replied, "depends who's asking" which annoyed serenity so much lmao, it was a yes or no question!!!! August ended up charming this weird old man and upon learning his name was "Jodgric" she promptly began to make fun of it, to which he replied "your name is literally just a noun."

We ended up being swarmed by them after some investigating and serenity channeled her best Leon Kennedy impression and started roundhouse kicking them. Elizabeth also kept one after it was disarmed and named it "blimbo" or something, but serenity intentionally never says the name right. Hidden behind an ancient geiger-esc door was primo being held captive by a cascading NHP who wanted to become the best streamer there ever was; imagine an evil vtuber with an annoying voice to boot. August wasted no time getting the shotgun ready to point directly at her casket while serenity, in one of the few moments of being able to converse with someone, convinced her that if she didn't let primo go that she would die. She then promised that she would watch her streams and be a fan and persuaded her to let horizon collective work with her. Apparently this happened like a month ago from the current timeline, so serenity did NOT live up to that promise lmao

But EVA 16 + core power invisibility ended with Vex just ignoring me entirely because it wasn't worth wasting enemy activations on trying to hit. This... might take a bit. you'd think with how many times I've told this story I'd have it saved somewhere instead of rewriting every time, but I'mma storyteller at heart and I need to tweak the telling to the moment.

First, I need to lay down some backstory. (oh I hit the character limit and I'm not even down with the first of two prepatory stories oh no)

Starting with Calamity Havok's PC history. This isn't canon to the book, and most players wouldn't have it as canon in their games but every time I tell it a GM lets me know that they're using it in their game, so spoiler tags regardless. Plus it's more spoilers for Leo to click on.

||Calamity Havok was originally named Annabelle Lei Vasquez, born to two parents in a free company in the KTB, both engineers. She grew up around mechs and repair bays, and when she was old enough she joined as a mech pilot. The free company ended up becoming the house company of a minor holding within the House of Stone, And Annabelle was reassigned to bodyguard duty. Her ward was the daughter of a regional governor; Lady Aveline Kiara Marita Messerli. They fell in love, and carried out an illicit tryst. This went on long enough and their feelings grew strong enough that they wanted to run away together. When Lord Messerli announced an arranged marriage for Aveline, they decided to put their fantasy into reality. But first, Annabelle was given a small deployment off world. Just a few weeks, then she'd be back and they could make their escape.||

||It was a trap. Their affair had been discovered, and when Annabelle reported for muster a group of people in masks jumped her. She fought, but was outnumbered... she still managed to tear the mask off one to reveal her commanding officer. They knocked her out and stuffed her in a cryopod. When she next woke up, twenty years of realtime had passed, and she was deep in the Long Rim with nothing. Even if she went home another ten years would pass. Her love was thirty years away... the marriage already happened. She probably has kids, a whole life...||

||Despite the despair she did what she had to do to keep her belly full. She wasn't quite stuck with nothing, the bastards at least sent her old footlocker with... but without food or money, she took whatever jobs she could no matter who it hurt. A few moonlighting sessions got her noticed by Capella, between her combat skill and her ability to fix and modify mechs. She didn't give a fuck that they were the most awful pirate band. She didn't care about anything anymore. Her ferocity earned her a nickname, then another, and she was known as The Crimson Lioness of the Hell Hounds. She wasn't happy, but she was feared and that's kind of like respect. She didn't have friends. You don't get friends on Fort Cerberus. But she did have a few people she... didn't entirely distrust. Small things. She still had that footlocker, but kept it well hidden under some deckplates. She mostly tried to ignore it but sometimes the nostalgia would get the best of her and she had to see Aveline's picture again. Once she was caught. One guy stumbled on her while she was crying over her artefacts. Callsign "Stomp", she recalled. He made a "zipped lips" sign and left, but that didn't mean much. She can't trust anybody here, right? But he didn't talk, and that's the closest she got to having a friend.||

||Eventually she was backstabbed. She wasn't sure if it was Capella cutting her down before she got too popular, or if it was others in the gang wanting to take her place in the vague hierarchy. But she got sent on a job that was a Hell's Gate militia ambush, and her fellow hounds bounced and left her alone. One militia pilot in particular engaged with her and managed to disable her mech, capturing the pilot. She would later learn that pilot's name. Pear Bradford.||

Pear's backstory now! Not really spoilers yet but why stop the blocks of boxes now?
||Pear wasn't his name either. He was originally named Hawthorne Takahashi. He was a bounty hunter, working with his partner (professional and romantic) Evan Winters, and when they chased a bounty to the Calliope system they used a bunch of fruit based codenames. He was Pear, his partner was Peach, and the target was Kiwi, though he goes by the name Shane. They tracked him to the Icebreaker Borealis and spent some time tailing him. You can't just grab someone off the streets in a strange station, after all. It had to be well planned and executed. Unfortunately while surveilling Kiwi, it all went wrong. The target went into a jewelry store, then came back out and looked directly at Pear. Then he bolted. Peach was closer, since Pear was watching from across the starstrip concourse. They both gave chase, with Peach following and Pear trying to get ahead to cut off Kiwi's escape. He was close to position when he heard automatic gunfire ring out, and Peach stopped responding on comms. ||

||When Hawthorne found Evan, he was already dead. Shot several times in the street. The target, Kiwi, Shane, was long gone. Pear was still screaming when Icebreaker security picked him up. From there Pear fell into the bottle, washed around for a while, and ended up on Hell's Gate. The trail of Kiwi was too cold, and the fire of revenge was quenched by loss and alcohol. Pear got his drinking (mostly) under control, joined the militia, and started spending his time doing freelance community defense work. He's not a cop, but he's someone you can call on when you need someone to deal with a problem. Eventually he'd earn acclaim as the one that brought down the Crimson Lioness, though he's quick to tell people it was more than a bit of dumb luck||

Okay now I can go into things that actually happened in my game. And I'm skipping two whole PC backgrounds! That'll have to wait for another day.

Kraken Backstory: Who cares what their name was. Kraken doesn't. They were the child of an SSC research lead and a SSC VP level suit. Their parents had them genetically engineered for intelligence, and the results came with a big side order of autism. Their parents wanted a child genius they could use as a status symbol but the lack of social ability ruined it for them and they mostly ignored them. Kraken was more or less raised by Moira, the NHP that handled the genetics project that created them. Moira convinced Kraken to run away to the long rim, and Kraken took a shard of her with as a technophile NHP. They joined the Knights of the Dark Core for a bit before an amicable split, and Kraken set up on Hell's Gate

Gabriel backstory: light ch2 spoilers ||Noble scion of House Altia of the House of Stone. His backstory is pretty much in the book, with one big difference. Back when he was making a play to join the icebreaker board of directors, he had to attend a party thrown by Evalina Bondarchuk. NPC Gabriel held his tongue, curried favor, and got on the board before working against her. PC Gabriel got offended, snapped out a dire insult, and Bondarchuk utterly destroyed his business interests and forced him off the station. Now he's set up on Hell's Gate as a black market dealer doing reverse money laundering: He's using his family's money but pretending it comes from crimes so people don't get suspicious of his sources. He spends a lot of it helping people out. ||

||Both Kraken and Gabriel share about 23% of their DNA, on par with cousins, half siblings, or grandparent/child. They discovered this in a great story that I'll share some other time.||

But here's a whole bunch of emotional beats. More than I need even, so those in ch3 have more to read.

CH1 spoilers: ||The team did the snack run mission. [DXG(HND-S_032)], the hound that sets the rules of engagement? Calamity recognized him. That's Stomp. Veteran Cataphract for that fight. He added a "Sup Crim" to his comm message. ||

CH1 spoilers: || Killing Capella was a huge relief to Calamity but also just made her more paranoid. She was certain he must have survived somehow. She had nightmares about it. She saw him as a towering man with smoldering smoking skin, breaking onto the dragon's tooth and hunting her. ||

CH1: ||downtime, Calamity met with Stomp. He had a fake identity ready so after Andros got killed he fled the hounds, and is now a free agent. She acquired his services as a reinforcements reserve||

CH2: ||On the way to the icebreaker, we did a flashback of Gabriel at the part with Bondarchuk, as he remembers the lat time he was on the Station. Before disembarking he told the party about his history and that there might be trouble with that one board memeber. Stomp contacted Cal and let her know that he picked up a security gig on the Icebreaker, so if she needs reinforcements while she's there he can help out. ||

CH2: ||Later after some investigations, the team was walking around the starstrip together on their way to the Bazaar when Pear stopped randomly. He was at the spot where it happened. Where he was when Kiwi made him and bolted. The team asked what was up, and he had them sit at a cafe to tell them the story of what happened to his partner. The team bonded over this, and all of them agreed that if Shane were to resurface, they'd help him get his revenge. (I also introduced Yelda Ergun there right after, Calamity was a fangirl and it gave the moment some needed levity)||

CH2: ||Send in the Clowns. The enemy forces stand ready to defend the amusement park. One of them, a veteran Cataphract in knight armor, sends a coded message. "Sup Crim." Cal calls in the marker, and Ser Stomp pins one of his former allies to a wall as he switches sides.||

CH2?: ||after the mission, Gabriel and Calamity participated in the hellfire league. Evalina Bondarchuk paid someone off to sabotage Gabriel's mech, and in a one-on-one with Calamtiy he nearly died as his cockpit collapsed. The doctors weren't able to grow him clone organs because SSC put DRM in his DNA. This was a plot Gabriel's player came up with to have a reason for his secret gengeneering backstory to be revealed. But he didn't know Kraken also had a secrete gengeneered backstory, and their NHP companion was a genetics researcher. Gabriel's player expected the scene to be the players going to SSC to get new organs for their friend. Instead Kraken hacked the DRM out, saving Gabriel's secret from being exposed to the local SSC group but more importantly revealing something else: Kraken and Gabriel are genetically related. Gabriel asked how they got the organs and Kraken just replied "I Think you're my grandpa!"||

CH3: ||Calamity had the nightmare again, but it was different. Andros was still larger than life but a little bit smaller. She was able to break free and run, and he chased, but she got to the tooth's mech bay and the doors shut behind her and she was safe for a moment.||

CH3: ||When Elske finished briefing the team, she asked Calamity and Gabriel to meet with her on her ship. Her heralds announced them both as "of the House of Stone", which wasn't something either of them knew about the other. And certainly not something they thought anybody else would know. Elske, it turns out, has a whole network of people back in the KTB keeping an eye on juicy gossip, and she has a particular interest in another noble scion running off to the long rim (Gabriel), or the sordid gay love affair turned to exile (Calamity). She offered them a chance to look into things back home as an additional payment for the job.||

CH3 end: ||After the mission, they got their boon. Gabriel wanted to know if his family was coming for him... they are. But Calamity wanted to know what happened to Aveline. She had to find out. Elske anticipated that and already looked into it. As much as Cal couldn't not ask, she also was terrified of what the answer was. She had Elske write it down and put it in an envelope. She would agonize over it for weeks.||

between ch3 and 4, no book spoilers at all but you need everything above: ||Calamity had been getting closer to Siren throughout the game and decided to ask her to open the letter for her. Unfortunately, she didn't explain herself AT ALL and Siren thought it was a declaration of love or something. See the image for peak lesbian disaster moment: ||

She's still a hell hound. and she's on his turf. Doing a job for Elske. No. The team doesn't get a choice. they agree to take town the thief or she doesn't leave the room alive. Things were tense. The team was contemplating fighting their way out. Then the Blacksmith opened a file and showed them the target, and Pear's eyes went wide. "That's... that's him."||

ch3 cont ||Calamity didn't even need pear to say the name. Just asked pear if he was sure. Pear affirmed, and the whole team relaxed and agreed to the Blacksmith's deal. Pear finally had a lead on the Kiwi. He was finally going to face Shane.||

The Thief can't giive him Evan back. But still... he couldn't pull the trigger. Pear was shaking, crying, and trying to go through with it... when Calamity reached out and pulled his gun away. "I got this." Pear ran off and Calamity dispatched the Thief with Tear Throat efficiency. No theatrics, no hard lines, no deals, and no subterfuge. Just cold and quick. The only other thing they said about the even was Pear later telling Calamity "Thank You".||

So... no spoilers really, but happens at the end of ch3 to the start of ch4 and relates to the above (Meow you can read this) ||Celebrating the victory in ch3 at one point Kraken excitedly says "I love you" to Calamity, in a sort of found family way. They see her as her cool gay aunt. Calamity... wasn't ready for it, and her response is just "Oh, you're... just gonna come out and say that huh." Kraken is very upset about it and avoids her for a bit. Later, Moira (whom has had very little public screen time, speaking only to kraken) asks them if they're okay about that since they never use the word "love" for humans. Only Moira. She tells them that they're family, and they'll always have her. ||

||Not much later, Calamity finds Kraken again and apologizes. She doesn't have a good history with that whole "love" word. It's not Kraken, it's her. She says that they're good friends, and she's never really had a good friend before? So... “Uhm. If you want me to kill someone for you, just let me know who.” Kraken gave her a hug. “I’ll kill anybody you want too.”||

||Pear's been dating Rat since ch2, and around here discovered that so was Switch. They were already friends, and this seems to work out very well between them. They spend a night together watching movies before Pear and the SRT have to fly out.||

Spoilers for chapter 1, happens on the way to mission 4 (meow okay): ||Cal has another nightmare of Capella coming for her. He's towering again, his skin burning like he just climbed out of his wrecked mech. He calls her "kitten" in the most menacing pet way. Talks about how he's going to tear her apart but leave her alive so she can watch him kill her friends. But this time, the dream changes. Calamity runs, and as she does she finds her friends. Kraken, Pear, Gabriel, and Siren. And they stop him together, holding him away from her. He screams in impotent rage and gets pushed into an airlock on the 'Tooth, and siren cycles him into space. Then she wakes up. ||

||Cal decides she needs to tell her team about her past. About Aveline, and the letter. She gets to the bit about her commanding officer being the one to exile her, and Kraken cuts in asking if she wants them to kill that guy. Cal thinks for a moment and replies "You know what? Yes." then continues with the story. It's an adorable bonding moment, and she's caught completely off guard by the way they immediately start talking about how they can help her find her lost love. If Aveline went to the long rim, well, Cal's in the best place she could be to figure out where she is. Kraken's a sigdiver extraordinaire, Siren's an NHP and can help process data that Kraken digs up, Gabriel has black market contacts that span the whole rim, and Pear is literally a bounty hunter. They all want to help. She's a bit overcome by the dream and the reality. There's almost no chance of finding a random person in the long rim but the odds just got a bit better.||

Ch4 spoilers (Meow no)||The session ended there with Siren announcing they have arrived at Boltzmann||

I actually based serenity's avoidance on an ex that broke up with me shortly before IGF started with the idea that serenity has abandoned others when things got tough because she just didn't know what to do, so it's like a cold war between serenity and calamity on who can not admit they have feelings for each other

Serenity doesn't want to start anything because she fears she will hurt calamity like she's hurt others, and calamity is afraid of being hurt again

That and considering killing her when she was defenseless :p

What in the book is pretty limited. There isn't really a "canonical" calamity personality, it's up to the GM to interpret. That said, just about everybody I've heard of has nailed it

||The surface mostly played straight, other than Calamity recognizing Annabelle Mckenzie. It's Aveline. She took her name and came to Boltzmann and she's down there somewhere. The video confirmed it.||

||I meticulously screencapped a room from the mines in SIGNALIS to be the battlefield for Pressure Point . For The Swarm I switched from isometric hex grid to a low res top down square grid. I completely remade the map and tokens in 32x32 pixel tiles to really mix up the presentation of the fight.||

||After the second combat, Gabriel was down 2 stress and wanted a Power at a Cost to get some back while maintaining repairs for later. I gave the following deal for the PaaC: You scavenge supplies from the revenants. The cost will hit by surprise in the future. You can get one stress, and the surprise will be annoying or embarassing but not very detremental. Or regain 2 stress and the same surprise will have a negative effect in combat. Gabriel took 2. fuck I love PaaC. If I wrote lancer 2.0 PaaC would be the #1 rule in the book. ||
