if I needed an on the spot hardware store because my players insisted on needing to buy tools, Id probably improv a loaner program near the mech bay or other appropriate area. printing new tools is bound to be delayed by other needs, and some poor technician in charge is going to have to keep track of whos using one of the like 35 “good” torque wrenches, why the spare rivets bin keeps being emptied, what non-standard oil keeps melting the drain pans, and where the 10mm sockets keep disappearing to

or, in a simpler case, Im sure any technician doesnt mind sharing a tool for a few minutes as long as you aren’t disappearing with it for days or breaking it

Ive worked around car techs/mechanics for a little while, and while they dont mind sharing, their tools are very precious to them and they will be pissed if you break or lose one

Hell's gate is a city of a million people with a schedule 2 printer. The majority of the work available are repair and upkeep jobs for the purpose of keeping the air in. Plenty of basic tools are probably owned by the station and used collectively, but I'm sure there's something like a hardware shop. Probably more than one. Almost any small shop you might need is somewhere in there.

Ye but people like brainstorming ways it could be a playable frame, and while others are content to simply make it meme-ily unviable, I like to consider how it could actually be viable

To me, if you wanted to make it weak but still viable, I’d make it so that all of its abilities, including its core, have the prereq of having to be damaged first, with the idea being to simply mitigate the drawbacks of it more

So perhaps for a Core System, something like “Reaction- when you would take a condition, you don’t, and you act as if you were immune to all the effects of the action that would’ve given you this condition” or what have you. It’d be non-efficient, can’t have the raptor be too good, but you get the idea

And as a replaceable parts substitute, you could have something like “Reusable Parts- when you experience System Trauma, you regain 1 Repair, up to a maximum of your repair cap”

Those 3 traits being your only traits would make a shitty Everest, but it at least works

Impact Dynamics may be run by incompetent schmucks, but it was a pretty decent weapons manufacturer at some point

Exactly, I think people fall into the mistake of believing that the Raptor is an objectively badmech, opposed to what it actually is, which is worse than the Everest when the Everest is, as old heads at this game keep reminding us, 'the best mech in the game'.
The Raptor is absolutely as good as every other NPC mech in the game, it is, for instance, very likely the mech used by every Assault NPC in your game of IGF. It's not just that an actual freshly printed and customised GMS-SP1 is the baseline in Calliope, but it's well above the baseline of local manufacturers and NPC' graded mech anyware in the Orion Arm.

I personally see the raptor 4 as the great value brand variety of the already classic reliable model the Everest is. If you're ripping off something that already works it will have some quirks but it will still run and do its job. Personally, the Everest isn't the best mech in the game to me, it's the best combat specialist, but not the best mech. It's the classic generalist being able to fit a lot of roles while the raptor is the mangled little brother of it

My headcanon is that it works almost as well as the Everest, because its internals are copied exactly from the Everest.
What makes it not as good as the real Everest is that ID designed a new armor to make it look different enough from the original, and this inappropriate armor leads to problems such as poor cooling efficiency, unnecessary joint wear, and incorrect weight distribution.

These problems can be solved in the hands of a good mechanic, who just needs to replace the damn armor.

Have been thinking Raptors a bit in general, before the events of IGF Impact Dynamics made decent-quality mechs right? Older model Raptors might be genuinely comparable to player-grade mechs, and it's just the modern cheaper ones that substitute materials and sacrifice print-time that fold like wet cardboard.

Forgotten Weapons Mechs channel going over a pre-enshittification Raptor, remarking on how similar certain components are to later Tagetes models but decades earlier, and how really nice the control stick plays, but overall it needed around 50% more printtime than a comparable Everest and ate around 5% more rare earth feedstock

Might rework something with it for act 3, and I suppose there's a chance it could be brought back to act 2 before we're finished but I doubt it. Hello I have a big fucking text dump for you on what happened this session with SRT Leviathan spoilers ahead
Firstly, post chapter 3 spoilers, what everyone was up to before chapter 4 properly starts

||- Flashback to a few days ago when we were still on Asphodel, where Quil is inexplicably drawn to somwhere in the middle of nowhere in the wilderness, where his mech freaks out and its systems get confused at whether it is a Stortebeker or a Raleigh and he witnesses a battle between Marika Wren and Lin Zhihao that happened a long time ago. He ponders on whether the visions came from the Golden Hand he has in his possession, his own time-displaced memories, or both, and goes home while thinking about doomed yuri.

• Fritz goes to see S1GN4L to ask for help on breaching the Interloper's paracausal code bullshit. S1GN4L once again proves he's the best boy and agrees.
• Fritz and Léo both try to find Striga. She bursts out of a vending machine, causing Fritz to immediately go into combat stance and Léo to throw himself against a wall nearby.
• Léo asks for help on sending data back in time because he's worried about the Goblin license he received from himself will create a time paradox if he doesn't send it himself at some point. Striga tells him that a time paradox probably won't happen and teaches him about time vampires and how to grow time garlic in a three hour lecture.
• Fritz asks Striga what she knows about the New Dawn organization and she gives a disturbingly long and detailed summary, so Fritz asks her for help on gathering as much information on them as possible.
• Back in the mechbay, Aisaan calls the rest of the team because their mech is being weird (again). They were going to get a fusion torch mounted on it but apparently something called an Unraveler installed itself on it, and a program called Wandring Nightmare bolted itself into the systems. The new licensing on the dataplate just sends back error codes. Léo tries to dig into it, gets flashbanged with frankly disturbing audio logs and decides not to dig actually. Aisaan tries out their new weapon by turning a stray barrel into a pile of sand (and doesn't clean it up).
• Interview time! A Horizon NHP specialist on the Icebreaker by the name of Lyra Van Kraanen apparently has an NHP copilot candidate for one of the team members and also would like to interview Laplace and HEDRON because apparently third wave spontaneous manifestations are supposed to be rare or something, go figure.
• The team goes to the Icebreaker for the interview, where the Balwinder-Bolaño tests reveal that HEDRON is entirely unshackled but keeps himself stable thanks to Aisaan acting as a one person ontological bridge. Meanwhile, Laplace's shackles prove to be nigh unbreakable and claims that he made them himself so they obviously can't be any less than perfect. Lyra is fuming at the idea that there is two potential breakthroughs right in front of her and she can't publish any research about it because she's wanted in several systems. Lap promises to help.
• The NHP copilot candidate is revealed to be Atalanta, a NOAH, and Lyra interviews Sam who seems confused, saying that even if he does have the equipment to accommodate for a NOAH copilot he never actually asked anyone about it and wonders who would have told her about it. Lap feigns ignorance.
• Atalanta joins the team though Sam doesn't have enough space for the required systems in his Saladin right now (3 SP is going to be a tight fit) but he'll find a way eventually. In the meantime, he gifts her one of his late son Marcus's old drones so she can move around and do stuff.
• The team goes to find Anthony Callahan to discuss a few things. Sam asks about the ominous bloody list he got last time they hanged together and gets told it's probably best not to dig too much. Fritz talks about what happened to him after visiting the Crone and gets told that his existence is wounded and he might unnexist if he interracts with Doors too much in the future. Quil asks about getting a card reading but the cards explode and fly out everywhere, turns out he's really bad at not having Astral Stigmata in other timelines.||

And now, actual Chapter 4 spoilers
||- Jerry calls the team in a panic, saying they're needed at Hell's gate now so they take the trip back after trying to bribe Shelly with the promise of Legionspace sushi.

• Upon their return they get the mission briefing, Phase-shift has defaulted on a contract and now it falls on Hell's gate, and the team is asked to investigate on what happened.
• Léo figures "HA sponsored mining operation for rare earth and paracausal materials with an unknown client" sounds suspiciously like Loki's dad so he calls him about it, which he confirms is most likely the case after some digging.

• He then goes sigdiving and tries to find recent communications from Phase-shift or the local sunlighters, the Circuit but finds that there has been zero communications for months now
• fuck shit
• The team now asks Loki to go check on Phase-shift. Which he does but quickly finds out everyone is gone and they took every single piece of electronics with them (they did leave the coffee machine though)
• fuck shit fuck
• Team goes to S1GN4L and the dorks to ask what they know about the Circuit. Apparently they have a cascading fleet mind and a cascading scylla at home, said they were working on "Something really fucking big" and took down all their repos months ago and went entirely silent.
• The team theorizes that all of Phase-shift and the Circuit are all holed up on Boltzman but are unsure what they're actually doing.
• Léo nervously theorizes that the mix of "I command a LOT of people" NHP, "I am overly protective" NHP, people disappearing on an asteroid, stealing of every electronics on hand and "working on something very big" probably means that someone is breaking the First Contact Accords very hard right now
• Fritz theorizes that all the materials and electronics are being used to construct a blinkgate, like the one that was hidden in a hangar on the Icebreaker. Expect cult activity on arrival.
• Striga pops out of nowhere again and congratulates the team on finally seeing the truth ™️ about HA, and gives the team an EPHOR to deal with the likely thousands of hackers that you'd expect in any Horus cell worth their salt. Everyone collectively points to Quil who not only uses an old Stortebeker model but also likes redlining his reactor maybe a little too much.
• The team departs for Boltzman, Atalanta stays on station for now. Upon arrival the team notes a lot of ships stationed on it, but investigating them reveals all the electronics were ripped out too.
• Siren mentions a weird noise she hears, but only the two other NHPs on the team hear anything. The team suspects the two cascading NHPs likely on the station are to blame, so Siren leaves for now and will wait for visual from the team to come back and pick them up. HEDRON and Lap being built different, they stay with the team.
• The team finds a more recent ship that is apparently associated with the faith of the one, of which the logs mention cleansing a great evil. Fantastic. They're involved too. Great.
• Everyone goes in and is forced out of their mechs because the corridors are too damn small. It's pitch black but thankfully the team has both an Omnispectrum scanner for reading rooms, a personal drone for scouting and someone with Darkvision to prevent being snuck upon.
• Fritz systematically scans every single room before entering, just in case.
• The locked doors are no match for and assassin, an android and a couple of laser carbine batteries.
• Team finds a couple of dataslates with messages that do not make Léo any less confident in his theory and he is very unhappy about it.
• Aisaan briefly thinks they saw something in the vents, but it was probably nothing.

Impact Dynamics Black Kite

The Black kite was designed by reverse engineering the initial Genghis MK 1 “Worldkiller” at a similar time to the Genghis MK2s development, to see if it was potentially fill the niche of the Ghengis Mk 1 whilst aligning more to the 3rd committees utopian pillars. for one combat i was running Kai's rebake turrets. basically, they can deploy a shit ton of dangerous turrets but they're all 1hp. And almost everyone else refused to kill them and it nearly caused the one DPS to lose their mech
