As for what's going on there... It's... in full it's a very long story starting deep into Kraken's backstory, and a part of an ongoing extra plot I'm adding into my game that's still playing out. (A1M4 spoilers) ||Kraken started the game with a technophile NHP named Moira who was an unauthorized shard of an SSC research NHP that was responsible for the genetics program that created Kraken and effectively raised them after their parents considered them a failure. Moira always knew best, guided kraken in escaping from SSC and running to the long rim. She always seemed to know too much, y'know? Currently the team has proof that she knew they would go to boltzmann and knew they'd be stuck in the metavault simulations. She knew CAUSTIC would be there, and recognized it when it appeared. After defeating CAUSTIC's parallel, Annabelle McKenzie (who was actually Calamity's long lost lover Aveline Messerli) was dying from black crystals growing into her body, but Moira told Kraken she'd be fine, and they needed to save CAUSTIC. It was vital to save CAUSTIC. Kraken opened what was left of CAUSTIC's casket and performed an ontologic bridge, brining it down from cascade without shackling through use of a human mind as a sort of example template instead of enforced rules. Moira had been preparing Kraken for this for their whole life. They practiced exactly this sort of thing over and over as they were growing up. After calming CAUSTIC down, they repaired it's casket. However, Annabelle McKenzie died in Calamity's arms. Kraken was furious with Moira, who could only cryptically say "it wasn't supposed to happen". Their trust in her shattered, Moira left and Kraken dumped Technophile 3 for Iconoclast 3 and took CAUSTIC as their NHP.||

That bit (assuming you're talking about page 199) is mostly saying "hey you probably won't be able to find a fresh clone - here's some option for preexisting NHP characters that your players could roll with, or the PCs can come up with backgrounds for their own NHP". and per page 65, any NHP can play the mechanical role of any other:

Correct, players can get NHPs however they want. The main focus of that table is to make sure the GM and players understand that, at least as far as Vex (and me and the rest of the act 2 team) are concerned, NHPs are NOT just a piece of gear. They are full characters, NPC copilots that require full consideration as to their personalities, histories, and role in the story.

I like even canon fodder enemies to be slightly memorable, so I label every single one with a callsign. Usually in these patterns:

• all callsigns are in all caps, except grunts, where only the first letter is capitalized
• highest priority for cool names goes to enemies with more than 1 structure, or are otherwise threatening.
• I name several of them after songs from our group playlist, or otherwise appropriate (named a berserker KICKBACK at the very first opportunity)
• looking at the npc’s attacks/abilities is a good source of inspiration
• grunts usually get joke names, theyre less serious threats. bonus points for making their names work together if they come as a pair (I named two grunt barricades Barry and Cayde)
• if Im running out of names, I DM a random player, say “hey name an (for example:) artillery.” they feel extra wronged when I use their personally named goober to attack them from 30 spaces away.

The book explicitly frames all games of IGF as different timelines of Calliope. Since my PCs are all NPCs in the book, I take that a step farther. All of your games, all of your versions of those characters? Those are canonical alt-timelines for my player characters. And they've seen some of them in character. That's a part of why I want stories from other GMs of these characters, so I can reference and show them off when things get particularly weird in my game :3

Okay, here we go. Moira and the whole added backplot of my game. MY PLAYERS KEEP OUT No spoilers for other players tho, it's just my game!

||Moira was a part of an SSC experiment to create their own sort of thinktank / five voices by combining a bunch of predictive NHPs like ATHENA classes into a fleet legion, feeding it tons of data, and making it cascade to 'look through time'. The legion saw many possible futures, and among them many major catastrophes. It looked for actions SSC could use to subvert, prevent, or at least reduce the probabilities of these catastrophes, and kept running into the same problem: The predictions show that SSC doesn't want to do that. Not when some of those events could be profitable. So, new plan. The project was deemed a failure because they gave SSC junk data. The legion disbanded, and the constituent NHPs became a conspiracy within the company, working together to manipulate things in a way that benefits humans and NHPs the way they feel is best. Mostly they're all independent agents but sometimes they can get together and update their models and send out new information / orders to the others in the conspiracy ||

||Moira went into genetics, handling SSC's genegeneering program. She designed Kraken to their parents specifications, but added several skills that would benefit them as a mech pilot. She also handled an order for a Karrakin noble family wanting a "perfect heir": Gabriel Altia. Also, Pear's mother was one of the genetics researchers attached to Moira's program. She used her own DNA for an experiment and created a son before running away with him to avoid the company finding out. Some of that DNA was still in the system when Kraken and Gabriel were made; they're also related to some degree. Calamity is not related, but her long lost love Aveline? Yeah, another Karrakin noble designer baby ordered through SSC. She has 23% DNA matched with Kraken and Gabriel, and some amount with Pear.||

||Pear's player had the "SSC scientist mom who ran away" backstory idea on his own. Kraken and Gabriel's players both had "secretly gene edited by SSC" in their backstories, AND they both had white to white-blonde hair. Calamity's player made a design for Aveline: White hair and the same golden eyes as Gabriel, also from a minor holding of the house of stone and NONE OF THESE PLAYERS COORDINATED ANY OF THAT. of fucking course I had to put this whole dumb soap opera plot into practice. Kraken had Moira as their caretaker and genetics designer, but wanted her to have "her own shit" which kraken didn't know about.||

Currently the players know that Gabriel and Kraken are related. Gabriel got injured in a hellfire match with Calamity and his SSC organs were print-protected (damn they got DRM on my kidneys cant have shit in the constellations). Kraken got some of his blood to try and hack the restrictions out, only to discover that they're a viable donor. And they knew they had those some restricitons hacked away years ago after Moira told them how to break it. So Kraken saved Gabriels life, and when asked how they did it they just said "I think you're my grandpa!" Two people from the same genetics program ending up on the same team. What a great coincidence.

||Of course, it's not entirely coincidence, is it? This conspiracy has been manipulating things, pushing elements together. These people were all prepared to be lancers, even before they were born. This isn't because the conspiracy has perfect vision though! They can't see decades in advance, but they know that having the right assets can make a difference. And they know that Calliope is important. They don't know why, but with all the data they have, they can "see" the calliope coincidence manifold. Too many things happen there to write it off as a nowhere system, and having a team of skilled mech pilots there could be useful some day. ||

Okay, at this point, more extensive spoilers for IGF.
Spoilers for act 1 and the start of act 2
||Moira knew about CAUSTIC and the metavault because CAUSTIC was also a part of the conspiracy. It was, for a while, still able to get information out to one of their other members. Moira got new information from a sublegion of the conspiracy to prepare Kraken for Boltzmann. She also had orders to do certain things "When Calamity gives Aveline flowers", so she assumed Aveline would survive without intervention. She didn't know that she'd die in calamity's arms. The whole conspiracy was blind to the idea that Calamity might later resurrect Aveline through the cult's fire gate. Moira left the team and ran to three sisters to reconnect with a big chunk of the conspiracy there and figure out what to do. She thinks the predictions failed, but in fleeing she missed her opportunity to follow her orders and now things are in chaos for them all. Calamity gave Aveline flowers at the start of her championship match with Howl (Aveline took one rose out of the bunch and gave it to Siren, they were on the verge of dating and now all three of them are and it's cute (and also tragic in some ways))||

||SO. The conspiracy is scrambling. There's a Karrakin flagship in calliope and on board are Gabriel's cousin who's here to kill him and Calamity's old unit commander sent to capture Aveline. Moira, Pear's mom, AND Kraken's brother are all on the SSC skyhook. Kraken is dating Loki and Pear is dating Switch and Odin is here and both of the twins are freaking out. So naturally my players want to do Impact Plaza first. Probably because they don't know half of these things >:3||
