In my game Kraken is one of The Dorks. They had to do a few favors for Samorn Patalung before she told them which of the patrons of her fine establishment they were. The punchline is that as soon as they did, Kraken came in wheeling Moira's casket on a dolly.

Interesting, having them be in the Dorks. The PC loves those noodles but had too many altercations with them. One point Kraken was alone and the Dorks started harassing them, then Calamity showed up behind them and the dorks scattered. Another time, Kraken found Striga and the truth engaged in "psychic warfare" with the Dorks, which consisted of both sides putting their fingers to their temples and grunting. Kraken was rivals with Striga too, but more of a friendly rivalry, where as the Dorks tried to bully them. So Kraken joined the combat. By throwing a brick. The dorks fled with one of them having a bloody nose.

These days Kraken and the Dorks have an uneasy truce. They've stated out loud that it only extends to the corridor around Patalung's noodle cart, but in practice the Dorks are too scared of Kraken to try anything again.

I played the Dorks as a bunch of starry-eyed youths who bought into The Cousin's support of the Dawnline Ungratefuls, and hate the Circuit as a bunch of brutes... Even though they're not 100% sure which side the Ungratefuls are fighting against. Moira ended being the level-headed, friend mom among them.

The meeting with Calamity was a bit more lowkey. The PCs needed intel on ||the scanning network that the Hellhounds were using||, but Calamity's time was being monopolized by Chief McArthur. I had one of the PCs establish themselves as Calamity's friend, and another someone who she did not get along with. That latter PC tried to fix the mech that Calamity was meant to be working on... and got sent up to the mech bay rafters by a misfiring gravity charge. Havok bust her guts out.

I remember when I had braces, now I have one of those transparent bracers for the top half and a metal wire held in by dental glue for the bottom because I was too lazy/depressed/timecrunched to properly take care of the braces apparently

the dental glue for the bottom half was put in asymmetrically (two bits of glue on the right side, only one on the left) and that has been a constant pain to my OCD-having ass who likes things symmetrical

remember kids, take care of your teeth because you only get one good set and every tooth is a potential spot where Bad Things could get into your circulatory system if you're not cleaning it regularly enough (at least I think that's what could happen, I'm not a dentist or a doctor)

first combat complete! as the GM, heres some highlights w/ player character names from my crew of players who are all new to the game (it took us three hours bc we are new to the rules):
(potential spoilers for the very first combat I suppose)
||- mvp for pushing the objective (escorting the freighter) was our local isekai protagonist Celish the elf. she spent multiple turns being repeatedly immobilized by the Hive Commander.

• the ex-sunlighter, Calamity Feedback, is really good at tabletop games IRL (she regularly kicks my ass in magnagothica maleghast), so her positioning was top notch, at one point lining up three enemies with a Thermal Lance. Lucky for me, she rolled like shit all night (still killed a few).
• miss Evie Valentinian was the only one not necessarily aiming for lethal with her attacks, but also rolled the highest damage in one attack (12), almost instantly destroying an Archer.
• the party muscle, Lyra, bisected a berserker with a tempest charged blade.
• I attempted to isolate the mad scientist, Dr Copper, since theyre mostly artillery focused, only for them to end up killing the most grunts single handedly.
• by the end of round 3, enough of the pirates had died that it would be near impossible for them to stop the freighter, so I said the rest retreated. They got paid upfront, they knew the risk, but the Hell Hounds know not to pull their punches with this crew anymore (that’s GM speak for “i should actually read what the enemy abilities do before the session instead of trying to wing it”)||

the good news? my players seemed much more comfortable navigating their mech features by the end of session. the bad news? these guys scare the shit out of me

Sounds like you've got a solid party who know their shit, which can be pretty terrifying, yeah (my 3-man group was crushing 5-player comps at one point. OKAY I sat down and doodled a bunch and here's how I have the dragon's tooth working in my head and in my campaign.

I can see some challenges in the implementation, but I think you're 100% on the right track

challenges: all doors have to be as wide as they are tall, or else the doorframe has to rotate. All furnishings have to either be built into the side walls, or be positioned on the floor such that they can be moved to the other floor

the way I've gotten my players used to the idea of ship-as-tower is to describe it in anatomical terms, we call the central spine of the ship that because it runs up and down, the sensors and bridge are at the top, where a head would be, and the engines are your feet, because feet make you move.

people in general are too used to the ship-as-boat metaphor that most sci-fi uses, so they need to be kicked kind of violently out of that head space before they can settle on somthing more akin to the way IGF does it with spin-or-thrust-only grav

I've personally toyed with having artificial gravity be more common in my version of the lancer verse, but with some vaguely internally consistent handwaves as to why it's mostly used for corvette class ships, portions of bigger ships, and almost not at all on stations

For the 'Tooth it's also worth noting that 99% of the time you spend on there, it's under thrust. (Unless you just end up living on there like Calamity in my game... or Rosé in the remix game, or...). for the most part, you can design things with the expectation that the tail is "down". Some parts need to be usable in both configurations for safety and convenience but if you can't use the microwave when it's sideways because you're belly down, that's an acceptable compromise. I also like the terms belly-down and tail-down to describe these two modes.

And yeah, I love the gravity limitations. It's like the lightspeed limits, you don't see it enough in scifi. It's too tempting to make technology so good you forget you're in space... and it's so much better on the effects budget.

Space stations that use centripetal force for artificial gravity would usually have ships dock at the center of their axis of spin (this is visible in the art for Hell's Gate and the Icebreaker). Ships parked at such a space station will usually be in microgravity, or in very low "gravity" compared to the livable parts of the station. Having the belly of the ship sometimes be "down" would also be less significant in such situations vs landing on a planet.

Yeah, and despite usually being under thrust, I imagine the 'Tooth (or any lancer ship) would need to be designed with regular handholds and features that can assist maneuvering in 0g. Sometimes you gotta hold position, sometimes the engines might be out.

Star Cit ships are built with the whole artificial gravity in mind so their layouts don't make as much sense in something like Lancer which uses thrust based G, so I kind of picture it a bit like the Battletech Leopard.

Also I love that bed capsule that Ada made, it makes so much sense. I imagined it like one of those pull-down beds but with a mattress on both sides. So in either grav you could fold it up for more room space.

They have Rick Sanchez's unquenchable ego and deep desire to break through any sort of bounds (including the bindings of reality), but the terrifying chaotic energy of a mischievous cat. They're almost a trickster god in their own right. One of the NPCs in DRIVETRAIN's chat refers to them exclusively as "The Thing That Lurks In The Vents"

Kraken in any other game can be what the GM wants, but if you want to know what the original is like, they should always be a bit impressive, a bit cute, a bit funny, and always a little bit terrifying.

There's a big emphasis of community within Hell's Gate, so I would imagine a lot of younger children growing up with friends in mixed housing or staying over since they are either so close or considered family by some by proximity. I can also see the older generations being their care takers while others are doing their work.

A big sense of, it takes a village.

Ice Breaker is probably much more hostile for younger kids as the entirety of the place is much more adult focused. And the older gens wasting away slamming the button on gambling machines. (Much like now.)

As for Furnace City, it probably has a network for kids to get proper education before they get to apprenticeship programs for the many jobs Furnace city needs to keep running and not rot under all the acid rain.

Older citizens are probably part of the Assembly in the city that bicker all the time on what to do.

I've actually had some conversations with Ada in the past on how schooling, child care and other younger generational concerns are focused on in Hell's Gate.

We came to the conclusion its one of those programs Jerry will never have unfunded and give benefits and care for families with younger kids. Along with a education program so kids don't fall behind.

Act 1 was almost entirely Vex. There's a lot of small things that came from various playtest groups, including my own, and bits and pieces Vex pulled from the users in the GM-corner thread. Lots of people have had tiny contributions when they say something cool and Vex goes "oh, I'm using that". Also a handful of NPCs and gear pieces were made with other people as a part of the kickstarter. About halfway through chapter 3 vex started sitting in at my table, and there's a bunch of things I know changed after she saw it play out with my group.

For Act 2, Vex worked with me early on to build an outline of the whole story. We were just messaging at first, until I suggested we start doign regular voice chats. That turned into weekly meetings, and then we added some more people. Eris, who played Howl in the original campaign. Faust who played Johan in the same. Xeans and Theta, two of Vex's other friends. It's a very creative and cool group and we all do a great job of punching up each other's bits avoiding the "designed by committee" pit. Vex is still writing 99% of the words but we're all working together on the big picture and coming up with tons of little ideas, table fillers, badass one-liners, and names for everything, as well as working together to design all the fights. Also I have to brag that I wrote the most harrowing part of act 2 (spoiler warning) ||The bad end where Siren gets ready to suicide run the Tachyon and Jerry kicks her out to do it himself. Vex added Jerry reciting the oath, and then we both stared at what we had done.||
