You don't have to be but if you're looking to sell the one's you have you can use the app to get the market price to sell those cards for and still get your money's worth from them, older packs tend to go for more since they're harder to get (at least imo) but I don't know about the pikachu, I know after a little while when you can't get them anymore they go for a couple-few bucks but not a whole lot

Assuming you already have a switch, it's going to be a much lower investment to get new Pokemon games and you can base your opinion of them on deciding if you want to continue the obsession and get older games. The newer games tend to lack in story, as they pace quickly (in part due to how easy they are) but they also offer some of the easiest methods to get shiny pokemon, and have much more cross compatibility with other new pokemon games, or just being able to play with friends. They also have active online services if you want to battle people or trade or what not.

The older games are generally considered classics with longer, fleshed out story lines and steeper difficulty curves (depending on the game). There is a lot of subjectivity on which generation of games is the best but you'd have a hard time going wrong playing anything between gens 1-5.
The investment is a bit steeper in that you'd need to get an older console like a Gameboy, 3DS or regular DS depending on the game. It's also harder, and sometimes much more expensive to get ahold of the older pokemon games. These games do not have many, if any, online features and are harder to get shiny pokemon in.

No you don't have to buy the dlc I believe, I could be wrong here as the only way to really check if to see if you own the dex on your Home phone ver or not, but as long you do you don't need the dlc as long someone trade you all the pokemons into yr game then you put them into home, and even if you do need the dlc you only need 1 game but then again you need help from someone who got the exclusives from the other version, you atleast don't need to own both games, only way to confirm if you need the dlc really is to check yr Home on phone "which that you definitely need then link it to yr swtich account"

If I understood yr last question correctly, yes unlike pokemon go any traded pokemon on any game can be traded back freely, I think though on Home you can trade a legendary/Mythical only 10 times a day with a friend "if I remembered correctly ", but if you own a swtich you can just trade freely without any restrictions
