i mean worst thing that can happen is you primal evolving them and then once you unlock the mega, you can put either of them as your buddy and farm their energy by walking, thats what i did with my kyogre
(i walked a lot though, depends if you mind walking for it)

yes, once you unlock the mega, you can put any pokemon (doesnt have to be the exact one you mega evolved) from the family, so for charizard you can do charmander for example, and you get mega energy by walking, i think every 20 kms is enough to do a mega evolution on a pokemon you havent evolved yet. also note that once you mega evolve your pokemon for the first time, the next mega evolves on the same pokemon will cost less and less
