I believe the idea is that the watchtowers are placed on the perimeter of your town looking outwards for enemies, thus providing safety for the people behind them

Rather than looking for criminals etc inside the city

yes that's intended, the area shown is the area the watchtowers guards not the area the watchman looks towards

That does not make much sense to me so I figured it must be a bug, nevermind then ๐Ÿ˜

how so? you look on one side and are actually guarding everything behind you, since they have to get past you to attack what you are guarding

you cannot guard something that the enemy could reach before reaching you ๐Ÿ˜…

I figured it was like a watchpost, so they would look "in front" of themselves. I guess I see it more as a "detection radius" than a "defended area"

In my head it makes perfect sense for it to be a detection radius type deal, but your explanation works too

yeah it's the exact opposite of like the guard's view in stealth game etc.
