#Game stutters horribly unless I am holding middle mouse?

We have been seeing a few reports similar to this but it is still only affecting a handful of people and we are yet to find out what is causing the issue.
Can you drop a Dxdiag report here please (or DM it to me): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-and-run-dxdiag-exe-dad7792c-2ad5-f6cd-5a37-bf92228dfd85
Open and run DxDiag.exe
Are you new to the game or have you had the game a while and it is only just started happening?
I will probably ask more questions next week as it is late here for me but it would be great to get to the bottom of this and you are the first to join Discord with the issue.
So if you don't mind I will run through some troubleshooting to see if we can get to the bottom of this next week
I played when early access started way back, no issues at all, game ran flawlessly
it's a very weird bug that I am not sure how to reslolve
have never seen anything like it lol
FPS counter actually says something different than what i am seeing, framerate is around 15 fps and counter says like 150 - 200
Ok, that's good to know. Do you know when it first started happening?
I don't think it is the actual game itself as we haven't put out an update since the middle of December. I suspect there has been an update to some other software (could even be Windows) that has caused the issue but finding what it could be is proving top be a pain.
not enitrely sure, ive reset all settings on my nvidia panel to make sure nothing was messing with the game
removed second screen, disabled and enabled gsync
nothing really worked
I have a feeling that it isnt the game but I was hoping that someone else had the same issue and got it resolved
strangely when i started recording with OBS, it was actually smooth on the preview screen as compared to the game it self
game does not stutter when shadows are disabled
Thanks for the DxDiag. I have downloaded it file so you can remove it if you wanted. It's fine left there though.
I will have a look through the Dxdiag and see if I can spot anything obvious and will get back to you. I know it won't be obvious though.
In the meantime it would be good if you could test switching off all overlays. That will likely include Steam, Nvidia, Xbox gaming bar (Win + G opens it up) and any others. Also switching off 3rd party software such as mouse/keyboard software etc. Basically anything other than Windows and Foundation as much as possible.
Ok that's interesting about the shadows. Thanks
Great. I should be about on Sunday so will pick up any messages then and will be able to chat more next week. Thanks for helping out. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this
the game runs fine only at these settings for me:
AA and SSAO bring back the stutter as well
Could you do a clean install to the latest Nvidia drivers and test? I think new drivers were released 2 days ago.
If you update via GeForce Experience choose custom install then check the box for perform a clean install.
I doubt it will be any better but worth checking
Will do
Also I see you have Razer and Steelseries peripherals. Could you also end any Razer software and Steelseries software and test. Razer in particular are known to cause issues when gaming. Again these are long shots but worth testing
Ok great. I can see the peripherals but not if the software is running 🙂
Interesting your DxDiag reports a Razer Huntsmen keyboard
ah yes, but still no software for that
It's fine though... if the software isn't running that was the main thing
running ddu to remove drivers then reinstalling, will report back to you
perfect thanks. One other thing I see in your Dxdiag, which I have seen in another Dxdiag having a similar issue. Windows widgets has an error. It is probably nothing but check Windows updates and also have a look at your Windows update history see when recent updates were done.
I have a suspicion that a Windows update in December might be the issue but it is just a hunch.
You could also have a look in the windows event viewer when the issue is present and see if you can spot any error events.
Type Event Viewer into the Windows search bar. That will rely a little on you being a little tech savvy but it's fairly easy to navigate
I have to go now but I will pick up messages. Thanks again
okay, seems to be working fine now after the reinstalling the drivers.
sorry for wasting your time on this D:
No! That wasn't wasting our time at all!! Hopefully the issue was just the drivers and the update 2 days ago fixed the issue. This was really useful thank you.
Let me know if you have further issues
I assume it was just GPU drivers you updated?
Yes
@sterile eagle Hey, unfortunately it started happening again
That's unfortunate but also strange, perhaps it took a little time for the issue to be noticeable after a PC/game restart. Back to the drawing board I guess.
Hi @humble gyro I'm no closer to getting to the bottom of this but when you get a moment I would like to take a look at some of your mouse settings.
- In windows settigs (Win + i) search 'mouse' then find the setting that says 'scroll inactive windows...' this is probably on but whatever state it is in try switching to the opposite and see if that makes any difference
- As above but in that settings menu click 'Additional mouse settings'. Could you take screenshots of the buttons/pointers/pointer options/wheel tabs and share them here?
Sorry for throwing you in a loop, will check once I'm home
No problem at all and thanks. It's really helpful, as I would love to find out what is causing this issue
Thanks. And thanks for the mouse settings screenshots.
They all fine, nothing out of the ordinary so that's good. The only thing is the last image. Do you have your mouse plugged into your keyboard with a pass through?
nope
in the video i started focused on the game, then I alt tabbed out of it
you can see the peds moving in a choppy fashion when i am in focus of the game
Right, thanks. It's really quite strange. I'm certain it's not the game itself causing the issue but I really am at a loss as to what it could be.
As you mention and can be seen the fps is fine so the game is running smooth. It runs smooth when not in focus. But there is an interrupt of frames between your GPU and monitor when the game is in focus which I can't get my head around.
Out of curiosity, Could you test the game windowed rather than fullscreen? Fullscreen is technically fullscreen windowed but as i say, I'm curious
I have already, its the same, with vsync, without, fullscreen, windowed
1 screen 2 screens
tried most things that I would assume would affect this
Ok. A couple of other things to look at. First can you look to see if captures is set on in windows settings
wow, that was it
I had the windows game bar turned off and assumed it would turn off the recording too
Yes!!!
I dont want to get too happy now so I wont jinx it
Yeah true. Keep me updated
Will do, thanks ash!
No worries. Fingers crossed!
Hey just want to say, that this issue is still happening but the fix worked wonders for me.
Joining this discord was my last resort to stop the bug from happening so I think it would be beneficial to open a discussion in steam to have common bugs and what their fixes are because this was maddening to resolve.
Hello!
Same issue here, the game starts fine for me, audio goes smooth, video goes smooth, and after a couple of minutes it starts to stutter horribly. First to give up is the audio, then the video as well. If I pause the game and stay in the menu, the audio goes smooth again, but if i go back into the game it keeps stuttering.
I tried lowering my video settings, but the issue stays the same.
My video drivers are updated, and my PC shoud not have problems with this game, it runs havier stuff without problems...
I have a short video that shows what's happening, problems starting after 30 seconds...
