In these types of situation id personally prefer using cartoon tree references. Using realistic ones makes tou wanna paint it realistic as a beginner and that can look very off in anime style or cartoon styles in general

There a really good brushes you can download dor trees too

you should first decide the color of the light. if your source is for example sunlight then most of the time it should be yellow or a bit orange (depending on the time if it's sunrise or dawn etc.) and then the shape of the light that lands on your tree. it should give your viewer a feel how the texture of the tree looks like.
