Oh, by base layer I mean I take a soft pencil and set the first layer of graphite

I work with pencil shading in layers, base is always first and depending how much you wanna do your shading can vary in amount of layers.

the space between the eyes is fine. whats probably throwing you off is that her left eye, our right, is very flat and doesn't follow the curve of the face

as for the eye, you can fix that by moving mouth to our left, this way it'll help trick ppl's eyes into thinking its not off-center coz they're gonna base it on whats in the bottom as its the one in the center
