There r videos on YT teach people how to color in grayscale. But usually duration of this kind of videos r at least 30min. Right now I only know a different property of layer is required. Anyway try it later.

I've tried grayscale to color a few times, with.. varying results. this is one of my best ones. it's easier because you only have to think about values and in photoshop it's also extremely easy to bring it to color using gradient maps

this was in summer tho I know value studies are super useful but I'm lazy and I prefer flat coloring anyways

I do a sketch underneath, put my ref to grayscale too, then select a color that looks like a midtone to me and paint in the silhouette

then I reduce the opacity of the layer of the midtone a little and first begin by painting the ambient occlusion (which are the darkest areas, the areas where light can't get to regardless of where it's coming from)

then I work my way from the lightest shadows to the darkest shadows

and at the end I add the highlights

after I'm done I compare it with the original to see how much my values are off
