I'm not sure that it was entirely the Astral Ring mechanic's fault. With the Astral Ring, even when a Valk is no longer valuable as a DPS she'd still have some value as a support. Others may disagree, but it feels healthier than Part 1. Or at the very least, diverse.

And I've seen others blaming the lack of success on the story's pivot away from Kiana and Co. which I can understand. Being with this specific cast of characters for nearly a decade and then suddenly being asked to care about this other set of characters is a big ask, something I can definitely understand even though I'm only coming up on my 1200th Day in game.

Not to mention there is the devs' attempt to bring back the players they lost by developing Part 2 Battlesuits and Stellar Keys for the older characters and almost entirely ditching any Part 2 original characters. Fans of Part 2 might have felt snubbed while Part 1 players think that the pandering was insulting. I can't say for sure and I really don't want to put words in anyone's mouths.
