#Very long time until next review on mastery level kanji 1 cards

The mastery level is unfortunately not a very accurate measure of how well you know a kanji. Even if the mastery level is low, if you feel like you know the kanji, there is no need to worry (especially for the kanji cards, they are just supplementary and you will learn the kanji naturally as they appear again and again in vocabulary words. There are people on the server here who have seen study success even after archiving every kanji card!)
In practice, the "mastery level" doesn't mean much and you should ignore it. AFAIK it was only added because the Satori Reader integration uses it. If I understand correctly, the mastery level is actually a function of the card's ease factor (in Anki terminology), which means it's more of an indication of how hard the card was for you to learn than how well you know it.
Were the cards previously overdue? Have you studied intermittently over a long period of time? The NS algorithm is based on Anki, so I assume that this applies: https://faqs.ankiweb.net/due-times-after-a-break.html
Also, if you reset (cry) the card repeatedly during its first reviews, then later smiled it several times in a row, that would cause it, I think.
Yeah, I've been studying every now and then, so the link explains it well. I've also been doing the cry/smile thing quite a bunch, being too hard on myself with the studies. I recently read the NS article on how to use the grading system more efficiently so I am gonna use the cry button far less often that I use to.
Thanks for both your replies, not gonna worry about it too much, it'll all normalize in the long run!
