His whole thing is that he gets healing if you kill an enemy using multiple of your abilities, encouraging you to chain his skills together. You're supposed to use his whole kit in tandem rather than focusing on a part of it. To be fair this is just how you play the game well, but it's great that there's a character that specifically rewards that behavior with a free although slight passive self sustainability.
