there's a really interesting momentum transfer thing you can do by bouncing on the ground on the 3rd crystal and snapping your camera quickly after grapple but it's really hard

Oh yeah i re-did the merc bit SEVERAL times. I took it slow for him to get the alt special. Cabbage's loader video helped me get a pretty nice time in the trial though. Not that it means much, but it was really cool to see and (attempt to) execute.

I made a few last minute improvements to the trial that just ended, my best time was 1:16.52. I sought out the Discord cause I wanted to see if there were videos of better times, and sure enough I see I'm 19 seconds off, haha. I see most of the time difference though comes from me not doing a fully charged punch on the third crystal, and not knowing you can insta-kill both stone titans like that. Impressive work to the people that pulled off those times.

A question though, does anyone know why the teleporter instantly charges? It didn't happen when I did the Mercenary challenge earlier on the same trial, and I've never seen it happen outside of the trials, even with a ridiculous artifact of command build that gets to the teleporter in seconds and instantly kills the boss.

I'll try for the current one. For the one that just ended, when it was new I realized it was perfect for Mercenary's challenge and so attempted that. I took my time, running around the map gathering energy drinks and fuel cells, and several times I killed the boss, but took a hit getting greedy trying to charge the teleporter while the horde of enemies closed in.

So naturally I was confused when I decided to speedrun as Loader and all of a sudden it was instantly charging.

And yeah, the RNG for this seed and the last have been crazy good for Ethereal, but still. It's the little things like how efficient you are with movement or dodging that you make look easy. I don't doubt you could impressively do much harder things.

BTW, there is an easy equipment barrel right after you go outside the spawn tunnel in the second stage

Royal TF out of the first stage, destroy the crystal next to you in the 2nd spawn, zap the other, buy the box at your feet, exit the spawn chamber, go straight ahead, kill 2-3 enemies and buy Preon out of the barrel

because of Spite, I recommend leaving a Pylon right outside the chamber instead of going for the enemies next to the barrel

I getr the topaz, but it's not enough to sustain for me vs the onslaught of wisps, Cabbage manages to get through stage 1 without touching a wisp, I have to break off and kill them which slows it down and eventually outweighs me =/

I already have Ethereal but I think I just cleared it successfully on the current trial. I got 3 Topaz Brooch from the 1st stage, Disposable Missile Launcher, and 2 Fuel Cells. I also activated the Newt Alter. I then purchased 3 Gesture of the Drowned and selected the Distant Roost. In the Distant Roost there's a large chest on the way to the open area. It has a red item inside, so I got myself a Soulbound Catalyst. Every white item I got I turned into Tougher Times. I activated the TP then just ran around the map and let the DML do everything for me.

Edit: First stage's chance shine has 100% drop from first item and 0% for at LEAST the next 5. Addit. there's a large chest which I used for one of the Fuel Cells.
For the bazaar, it requires 1 lunar coin to access it then 9 more to get everything.
Second stage I got another Fuel Cell from the far-off island area then of course, the Soulbound while I was going towards the main section of the map.

@livid lance For Mercenary's Ethereal challenge, 100% health means health and shields, you can't cheese it by getting transcendence (the scarab). You can get shaped glass though, as you're not technically losing health with it, just having your maximum halved.

When it comes to getting Ethereal, I find the biggest hurdle is the Lesser Wisp. How the hell am I supposed to actively dodge something that fires that fast?
Especially with the current seed, given it spawns like, 5 of them at a time.

@elder frigate if youre just looking for completion, Engi the Factorio Champ is always a good pick. Just sit your turrets down and go grab a sandwich (jk you need to also be using your movement and abilities to be truly effective). But he’s perhaps the “least anxiety/steady turtle” in my experience.
Alternatively, if youre good enough, Loader’s insane damage and mobility even without items means you can spiderman through them.
Lastly, while this mostly applies to normal runs, Rex is always a strong and moreover consistent pick. He’s not overly reliant on getting any specific items, though of course they help. Like Loader, though perhaps less so, he has a bit of a learning curve though to manage hp properly.

Your best bet is just checking the trial every 3 days when it resets, taking stock of what items you're given, and decide yourself if it's easy enough

the wisps are super frustrating for Ethereal (for a casul like me).
Hitting up a Newt Altar and grabbing a Brooch on Scorched Acres (they're both just past the Teleporter) has been helpful because either dream leads to Bison, which feels way more manageable

There's an equipment on the furthermost side of the map. It's out in the open. If you have a drone or two, they focus those pretty easily too. On top of that, make sure you get a bundle of fireworks. Should drop from a chest on the first stage. Really came in handy!

Oh geez. When I saw that they were what I'd be going up against, I got worried haha. My biggest worry was when I realized they were going to be the boss. Luckily, they were overloading and some fiery ones spawned along with them, so I didn't really have to worry about doing much damage in the end.

the useful stuff I've found on the first stage is the Crowbar and Brooch, and there's also a pair of Glasses which helps a lil

Yup. The brooch along with the fireworks worked with each other sooo well

Also, there's a couple of Red Whips in stage 2 that really came in handy. Made it a lot easier to evade the Contraptions
