Yep! On steam, sometime during the 2362nd trial the game bugs out and then gets stuck on trial # -5923 essentially forever. I did test if trials actually loop, and it seems they do not. I know the cause and can go into exact technical details if anyone's interested.

The way the game determines the seed for Prismatic Trials is by counting how many cycles (3 days) have passed since the first trial (on 2018-08-27). It takes that number, then bit shifts it to the left by 32 (multiplies it by 2^32), which ends up generating a fairly random looking number, at least in base 10. As a side-effect this sets the upper bound for the number of trials at 2^32-1 (seeds 0x00000000 00000000 - 0xFFFFFFFF 00000000). That's a lot of trials! There's a catch though. The way the game determines the current cycle is by querying the Steam servers for the current timestamp. This is done indirectly using the Steamworks library's GetServerRealTime() function.

This is where things get interesting! The value returned by this function is a 32-bit unsigned integer. Nothing wrong here, and this doesn't limit the number of seeds on it's own, but what does the value represent? Well, this value is the seconds elapsed since the Unix epoch (1970-01-01 00:00:00). Why is this a problem? Remember that a cycle lasts 3 days. This means that the upper bound for the number of trials is now all the way down to (2^32-1) / (3 days in seconds) = 16570 trials over 136 years. That's still a lot of trials, but that's not all! Remember that the Prismatic Trials epoch starts on 2018-08-27. Since the GetServerRealTime() function starts at an earlier epoch and effectively does not overflow, that reduces the number of trials down to ((2^32-1) - (Prismatic Trial epoch in seconds since the Unix epoch)) / (3 days in seconds) = 10646 trials over 87 years. This is a lot fewer trials than the Seed generation supports, and would stop functioning after 2106-02-07.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! The Steamworks implementation for GetServerRealTime() internally uses a signed 32-bit value to determine the current time, which means it's affected by the Y2038 bug, and effectively halves the available active time for trials. With the consideration that the Prismatic Trials epoch starts roughly 47 years into the Unix epoch, that leaves the total number of trials at 2362 trials over a mere 19 years!

What happens after the active time runs out though? Well, once GetServerRealTime() reaches past it's maximum value of 2^31-1 (0x7FFFFFFF) on 2038-01-17 at 03:14:07 AM (which happens very early into trial 2362), it starts returning -1 due to the internal overflow condition (this is consistent with a 32-bit time_t implementation). Further, -1 will be returned for as long as the internal overflow check holds or the library is updated to account for the Y2038 bug, meaning Prismatic Trials would be frozen forever.

Now for the part which I don't quite get and haven't tested extensively. Somehow, it seems like the -1 makes it into the calculation for the seed cycle as a signed 32-bit integer despite explicitly being converted to an unsigned value in both the game and the libraries. As a result, the seed calculation will now always see the current date and time as 1969-12-31 11:59:59 PM, sees that this would be cycle #-5923, and finishes converting the value to the unsigned seed value of 18446718634618257408 (0xFFFFE8DD 00000000). If GetServerRealTime()'s -1 was interpreted as 2^32-1 (0xFFFFFFFF), the cycle would instead jump ahead to #10646 with the seed 45724221833216.

As a result, Prismatic Trial seed 18446718634618257408 on 1970-01-02 (due to inconsistencies in the date calculation) is effectively the final Prismatic Trial seed. This brings the grand total of Prismatic Trials to 2363!

TL;DR: Game mixes incompatible epochs and time spans. Steamworks library suffers from the Y2038 bug. Trial #2362 becomes the shortest active trial at just 3h14m07s. Trials after 2038-01-17 become frozen forever at 1970-01-02.

For anyone who doesn’t have slicing winds and isn’t a god merc like cabbage, you can kinda cheese this trial if you are good at dodging the lizard fireballs on stage 1. Just rush the teleporter, kill boss and then kill everyone on the map. Spam the equipment items until like minute 9-10 depending on when you start spam activating equipment. Whenever you land on the preon accumulator, go to stage 2 and one shot the boss with it
