His special in phase 4 lasts 10 seconds and he has a practical item cap. He has two utility charges and his special resets in phase 3 due to an ability override which artificer can directly interact with. Backup mags cause him to balls more which makes him stand still allowing him to damage himself more and you to get more free hits off and he uses his orbs at 90% health.

difficulty scales linearly with time and exponentially with stages iirc, so spending a bit more time to get more items is generally pretty decent

Items are what make you outscale the enemies in looping. You get more by full looting as enemies give more money in proportion to the stage chest costs the longer you stay, thus getting as many chests is possible is more efficient

the way difficulty also scales with what stage you are on, so rushing's benefit of not making the enemies scale as much is actually a lot less of a benefit than one might think

it's not like the timer completely doesn't matter though

honestly, this isnt completely true. time does matter. you should be looting, and if youre not looting (aka you havent gotten an item in like a minute) you should go through the teleporter and loot afterwards. if youre looting consistently = keep looting
if youre not looting consistently, or getting items too slow = go through

they're generally considered harder characters to play in the game

I don't have too many specific tips, but item knowledge is huge (what items are good with your survivor), for arti you want to rotate through all your abilities, and with merc you want to generally be dodging a ton & using the iframes from abilities (dash, evis if you don't have SW) if you can

for arti prioritise rose bucklers, bands, crowbars, bands are like the biggest powerboost you can get

always sprint, you can tap ctrl after m1 and you can tap ctrl after you start charging your nano bomb, you can tap ctrl to quickly cast ice wall

do not forget about your ice wall, it is extremely strong, and makes mithrix nearly trivial

if you want to dps big targets/bosses your best rotation is m2 > m1 spam > flamethrower > m1 spam > etc and throw in an ice wall when necessary

can't say anything about merc because onetrick arti but there are some good combos on the wiki like blinding assault cancelling with m2, extending exposed with m2 and utility

For merc, you have very strong aoe and mobility regardless of your loadout, but your single target DPS is slightly/moderately below average (and trickier to pull off). Focus mostly on things that will aid your damage like Focus_Crystal , Sticky_Bomb , LensMakers_Glasses , AtG_Missile etc. Your ability to hit lots of enemies at once is great so all you really need is to get high damage on these attacks

try to unlock his alternate secondary if you ever feel like your damage output is too low

Also focus on learning his tech / advanced tricks. He is a pretty crappy character without them, but with them he is pretty high up

too slow for Risk of Rain 2's fast movement requirement, too chunky in a non-agile way (good example of agile would be Loader or sorta artificer when using ion surge), too repetitive with Mul-T in the game, and too one note to be interesting
