uhhh in general, you start the round (point) with a character that has pretty solid neutral and can build meter, and that really shines with assist
your second (mid) character is usually meant to be good at spending that meter by dhc'ing them from your point character, and prolly has a good assist
your third character (anchor) should be someone that has a really pivotal assist for your team and you are confident in making a comeback/robbery with, or someone that can do a fuckload of damage with your leftover meter

in skullgirls those roles are filled by:

yeah sg doesnt really give a shit its more balanced than marvel

so you can just play whoever the fuck u want unless its a team like beo val squigly cuz that prolly wont do much

and if you like 2 characters that dont work that well together you can glue it together with double
