I dont know if this is a hot take for summoner class (well, for vanilla I mean), but I genuinely despise the fact it has the lowest armor class out of any class type, somehow lower than rangers/mages who get to operate at peak efficiency without needing to ever be close to begin with, whereas summoner kinda has to straddle awkwardly close to enemies to whip them whilst having a generally low armor class.
plus the fact that summoner has kinda only been somewhat recently recognized as a "real class™️" compared to its other class brethren, so its build paths/variety is kinda doo doo dog water
hopefully this opinion does not get me crucified
I mean, if there were longer range options for summoners other than whips, like a mage like weapon that trades mana for ease of access/range/target access. I wouldnt mind the low armor class, but neurons fire off in my brain in rage when I see the vortex armor have more defense than stardust armor despite already having the longest effective attack range of the classes + decreased aggro with stealth.

one thing I REALLY dont like actually, is the fact that whips can only apply ONE of its effects. to any given enemy struck by it, which means you could very easily hit a high priority target, but its ludicrous AoE makes you mark some stupid fodder instead

I just remembered one of my ideas for a more distinct summon style actually
so whips (all whips) put their effect plus an additional one called "Mana Flicker" which simply gives a bit of mana to the user when you strike the target with the whip.
all summons alternate function (marking a target) gets swapped with a manual overide and maybe a buff, at the cost of heavy mana drain
so one would whip to mark enemies, regain mana, then with that marked enemy and pilfered mana, command their summons directly to shred them apart.

summons will still provide some extra dps for unrelated classes, but the actual power comes from whips buffing them

one whip I actually really like is the firecraker, it has a super unique property of not marking a target to make them take flat damage, but instead, any damage that goes onto the target is Multiplied which is actually insane when you factor late game summons, arguably one of the strongest summon tag effects aside from enabling crits.
I believe its a straight up 20% multiplier to all summon damage, way better than the smaller numbers (well, assuming its a high base damage summon, than otherwise, usually the flat value does better)

They were a the “Lead” to be more accurate, and that’s why we now have the super awesome 5983729 year long cooldown on vamp knives for some reason.
And a bunch of other totally intelligent and super fun and not detrimental changes

Yeah you can really see the “age” on calamity with things like dragon folly or bosses just straight up using base boss ai from terraria, just slightly tweaked
