Thankfully there was a way in the opposite direction I could run

I suggest doing it near halfway down or a two thirds of the way towards hell, having an underground village there with a pylon will be really nice to have, additionally at the corner of the bottom right portion of the ice zone too, so you can have a pylon leading to both the ice biome just a bit aways and cavern level goods, which will be useful hardmode.
bonus points if its a couple hundred blocks or a thousand away from an existing helevator to increase ease of access over a larger area

when you assemble a base, you can hook up carbon burners (generators) and solar panels to store power into a battery, with a placeable foundry you can cook the mold, or install a cooker in your backpack to refine things too.
its a slow, but consistent process

but having two runaway mold farms are a great source of nanites, to upgrade an A class ship into S class, I think you need 20k nanites?
ive force upgraded two ships and a multitool with that nanite farm
again. very slow, but much faster and more consistent than anything else I did.

its a generic upgrade, if you can afford the slots, its always a nice thing to add.

also if you put upgrades with similar icons near others with similar icons, like scanners near scanners, you can boost the performance of those upgrades, so I definetly suggest rearranging your item upgrades in tight little bundles in order to get stronger buffs and stats

jetpack is fun, earlier I described a movement tech in NMS.
if you use a melee attack while dashign you kinda do a tackle, and if you interrupt the start of that with a jump and timed jetpack boosts, you retain that momentum
huge mobility boost.
aside that, mining is really good, and for multitool damage, I personally go the scatter gun, and if possible, getting the cloaking and barrier upgrade is good (barrier being the one that projects a field that blocks all frontal damage while active)

oh, one huge ship upgrade I suggest is launch systems cost decrease and launch systems energy recharge, reducing the cost of the launch by just 5% alone gives you one extra launch before going empty, and you can lower it a ton to like, 7% cost total I think. and with passive recharge I dont think ive ever refilled my launch thrusters since then.
