Well yeah, but how far do you want it to go
To elaborate, games have a few main parts:
- Mechanics, clearly the most important. This is what most people mean when they say ideas were copied, and it’s fine to copy ideas if the following are changed:
- Tone/feel, second most important. This is about game juice, audio, vfx.
- Graphics. You know what these are, and they’re fully changed so that’s fine
- Setting/story/area, the last part. This is nms’s million-planet-galaxies, planets with randomly generated animals, stuff like that.
Starfield has 100% fully copied 1, the mechanics, and 4, the setting, and this was clear from the trailer. Honestly, this alone wouldn’t be too bad as long as they had some new mechanics that change the rest of them, but we don’t know anything about any mechanics not shown so don’t count on that. Past that, the tone, 2, is majorly similar. The combat was way different, but the flight and resource gathering laser was exactly the same, so about middle of the road there.
So out the gate, ~2.5/4 is ripped straight from no mans sky, with most of that difference being a graphics and artstyle change. The only real viable difference in my eyes (I don’t care about graphics or artstyle) is the combat style so far, which means I hold the extremely strong opinion that starfield is a direct copy of nms with bethesda’s name slapped on the tin.
