gold portal is rarer, but if you've been there and beaten the boss before, there's not much to do besides get a few items. And you can get blue portals on any stage by using a newt altar so that can be done any time

actually there is an unlock for beating the gilded coast boss in one cycle, so you could go for that if you haven't done it yet ig

"what items are good" is hard to answer since a lot of them can be good in different situations

but in general, any kind of dps multiplier is almost always gonna be good (like crit, attack speed, on-hit procs like etc.). Speed and mobility items are always good along with most defensive stuff, healing items vary but the only really bad one is
Some stuff depends on your situation, like AoE items for dealing with crowds

one important thing to remember, is that item variety is always better than just having big stacks of a few items. Most items can multiply each other's effects (especially damage items), so ideally you want lots of different items building off of each other

also protip for engineer specifically, is really good (if you hadn't figured it out yet)

if you want some tips for getting engie's alt skills:
|| + is really good at killing the boss in under 5 seconds ( is also even easier but it's dlc)||

||for the alt utility, enemies stop spawning when the teleporter is at 99%, so you can just charge it up with the boss still alive, then run around the map killing any leftover enemies. helps a lot since the missiles have infinite range and can find any hidden enemies||

and the alt special is as simple as just buying lots of drones

you could also get some pauldrons and a tonic, it gives +50% health and is multiplicative. I think longstanding solitude with a few pauldrons will also work

health gained from levels doesn't count, but health multipliers scale off of your level hp which does count

if you aren’t planning on looping and have a roll of pennies, ghors tome, or can stack some of the brittle crown lunars you can generally take long-standing solitude after stage 1 and not miss out on many items. and if you are in single player you can stack it for more items per level up.

but even with one stack from level 0->94, that’s 94 items which is more than you will get in one loop, maybe even 2 - by then you will have found a cleansing pool chances are so just get rid of it - and then you have pearls which are also OP on him

but order of priority is 1-2 stoneflux before LS

but the reality is: false son is so busted you don’t need ANY items with him if you have high growth

everything will die in one alt R ability if it has enough stacks of lunar ruin on it - and you will out regen / out armour any attack. so items aren’t even a priority on him, growth is. maximize growth = win. he is one of the most consistent characters in the game because of this.

you can put armour curse damage on E9: the character cannot lose with lunars tbh.

if you want to make it even more broken stack any combination of fuel cells + gestures of the drowned (so that the sum of the 2 is 4) and spinal tonic and you won’t even be that slow

btw you can unlock the 40 charges one after completing one stage with LS with artifact of command: the plan is the same. grab a bunch of pennies, 1 or 2 repulsions, go newt -> grab a stoneflux and a LS -> in stage 2 soak up damage and become level 94 in one stage -> you now have 40 stakes

so if you hit multiple enemies, you can get away with doing less damage to each one

also note that base damage increases like glass and watches don't help, bc the target is total damage so it scales with your base damage. you want multipliers like crowbar and bullets instead

Some characters are good at doing many small hits so they’ll probably prefer attack speed and bleed. Some characters do damage in one big hit so crowbar and Bands are good. Some characters will be able to do both.

Void and Lunar items cannot be scrapped, but if you find a Cleansing Pool you can exchange a random Lunar item for pearls (one of them gives you extra health, and if you're really lucky you get the rare one that gives 10%+ to all stats)

its mostly about attacking type, and then any other niches the character uses, plus the speed and damage items that are always baseline good to have

huntress generally hits quickly for relatively low damage so she likes attack speed and base damage procs, plus her m1 is agile so she likes sprint based items

ballista makes good use of bands, crowbar, and cdr

and her m2 is spammable so she likes backup mag

its mostly paying attention to how well any given item works off of the characters kit

hes one of the hardest characters to play. first and foremost make sure you have poison!!!!!!!!!!!! also default of all his abilities are generally much better than alternates (secondary is debatable but just see what works for you)
an important part of his playstyle is his leaps. they’re almost like huntress dashes and u need to use them to evade danger and not to deal damage. considering with poison you have PLENTY enough damage your main bottleneck will be movement/ dodging. try and focus movement items and hit epidemic in big hordes of enemies. anddont give up

hmmmmmm transcendence is ok. his strong suit is his health already so I wouldn’t focus that. think of him similar to loader / arti in that u wanna use items that help with ability cooldowns since he’s heavily ability oriented. that being light flux pauldron (eeehhhhh since atk speed loss sucks), purity, alien head, backup mag, lysate cell etc. also again movement speed since he starts out shopping cart mode. he feels terrible before u have a few hooves / drinks so try and get some movement asap. survivability is general the play to focus since with poison you can almost always take down a boss whether you have good damage items or not

Multipliers are really nice to get for buffing poison damage ( is especially good, but etc. are great as well), and having drones or some aoe like gas is also helpful for finishing off weak enemies. And ofc procs are always good if you happen to get them, he has alright dps if you play him aggressively (especially if you're sprint-cancelling his primary)

Technically Acrid is one of the least item-dependent survivors since poison scales with enemy hp, if you really need to you can just poison stuff and run in circles while you wait for everything to die

stuff that gives extra skill charges or cooldown reduction is also great, but I probably wouldn't take purity unless I'm late in a run have no proc items at all
(I may also be biased there since I hardly ever use lunars)

honestly i think they are very very hit or miss for me. i dont think they are the highlight.
SoTV has railgunner and void fiend. RG is fine but he is a very specific type player and honestly is kinda OP depends on luck. VF is just gotten old to me after his gimmick is familiar.

SotS has seeker, false son and chef. seeker is good in multiplayer but i never find my self player her because it isnt anything super special i understand some would like her but it feels too much around just meditate, false son and chef are great i love false son's growth and chefs effects with move rotation.

the two new characters are both too gimmicky, operator is nice but i find it is luck dependent on most runs at the start for trying to get decent drones. drifter is fun but the constantly trying to keep temp items gets old fast and his alt special just isnt worth using since the only good passive is red (which is expensive ) and green which can be negated with

i think all characters can be fun if they fit your play style but i find my self going back to the vanilla more than i do the dlc with maybe chef and false son being the ones i i go back to

in no way do i think they hurt the value of the dlcs and all my feelings are only from playing monsoon which i know not everyone likes and it changes how you need to play
