in that regard, yeah he's basic, but the interest in the story doesn't come from subaru specifically (at least, to me), but rather the things that affect him and how he reflects, accepts, or rejects them.

I think FLCL is better and its aimed at the same edgy teenage audience; same with Evangelion. What makes those shows more valuable is that they also show how somebody who is in the restrictive mindsets of the main characters can grow as a person. Shinji is basically edgelord supreme at the start of the series and the narrative punishes him for that and forces him to change. The same thing applies to FLCL, where the main character has to learn to understand the people around him and why they act the way they do; developing empathy and learning to appreciate the city life he views as boring. Both of these series are "coming of age" stories, in a sense.

I really like how it plays with it's time loop mechanic
return by death is a really interesting take on finding different angles on things, and it's satisfying to watch subaru use the knowledge he's found to overcome something, but I also like how they don't ignore the affects of death and still take those thoughts and fears along with the knowledge every loop.
Also due to this, you get to see many angles of characters that you wouldn't normally see if you were on a singular path (or at least, it would take far longer to see these aspects), so it stays fresh for me too as the pacing is almost always 100% constant.
I also really enjoy the history and the mysteries that follow subaru's entire existence, the foreshadowing and theories around characters.
I also think that they do threats really well because the author has the privilege of killing his main character
(sorry took awhile to write, this is only a bit of stuff i really like about the show even if i do mention subaru a bit too)

I like that re:zero doesn't do what you expect it's going to do
but the same exact shitty "oh look! this character MIGHT be dead 😱 now you have to watch the next episode to find out!" that they do literally every single episode rinse and repeat makes me enjoy it a lot less
there's hardly anything compelling in it narratively either
I just don't understand how you think that Subaru is different
there is nothing inherently exceptional or different about Subaru, he's quick witted but hot headed like literally every other dime a dozen isekai protag
there is something non-derivative original, and interesting about the overall anime and where it's willing to go in terms of exploring darker themes but what I'm getting at is you can replace Subaru with Kazuma/Kirito any other boring male not quite totally skinny average build short brown/black hair protag and have the same anime because it's the setting that shapes Subaru and not the actual character being interesting at all
they also make straight up softcore porn as well and inject it into their shows, re:zero has got that waifu bait so of course basement dwelling edgy teenage weebs like it. I would personally disagree with this, and i'll try to play within the limits of season 1 for why:
||while I can admit that the show doesn't pound it into your skull like insanity, and it has to be more picked up on (even if it's told to you a lot), emilia has a striking resemblance to what is considered the main antagonist (at least, within season 1). Everyone thinks that she is the witch of envy, and she has had to live with this isolation for most of her life. On top of this, she's a candidate as the queen of a nation, which she wants to become and excel for the good of everyone, even despite her appearance (which most people are still veered off by). I see her as someone who's looking for some gratification, and is willing to make sacrifices for it (such as telling off or pushing herself away from subaru, who has been one of the only people to accept her).||

||On another note, the way that subaru acts in those scenes is pretty much 1:1 with what you consider her to be. Subaru (under the influence of his expectations of isekai, and his inflated ego) starts to force his ideals onto emilia, which really pushes her away from him. While I liked emilia before, and I could sense her struggle, it was those scenes that really made me invested in her character. On my first watch of season 1 (yeah, I've watched it a few times admittedly), I definitely thought of emilia as a trophy girl, but those scenes with subaru are what made her break from that stereotype, i feel.||
