I think Minecraft's missed potential would actually be excusable if the game had just released and gotten no new updates upwards, but the fact that they keep updating the game without fixing its core issues is kinda stupid. I don't think Minecraft's biggest issue is a lack of progression systems, because the game was never really about that at all. I think it's biggest problem is that you get to a point where you don't need to engage with the game's systems very quickly; you end up in a creative mode lite where you have to take an hour to gather materials before your do a part of your build and nothing else.

Survival mode is sort of a dishonest description of what the game is, even in that mode.

Why not add a rare dungeon item that gives you a grappling hook or something? Maybe it's in the deep dark so you can get it early on. Why not make a set of armor that allows you to hover for a short time or an item that allows you to create templates for blocks so you can generate a projection of a Redstone machine or small build?

All of these things loop back into exploration and just give you more avenues to do what the game wants you to do: collect stuff and build.
