Original POST:

It would be nice to have "virtual" removeable thumb drives in the game so that we can keep backups of things in game like bins we cant read or Applications incase we accidently delete them or a player hacks you and deletes them?

back up your bins on a rental. open configlan

#

click the button to save a backup

#

when you restore[ that rental], the binaries will be there

coarse night
#

thats a back up tho- im talkking about actual USB sticks tho - not just for backing up

latent glade
#

what would simulating a virtual actual usb stick accomplish that backing up binaries on a server that you can backup?

#

like, the backup of rentals is essentially backing up it's filesystem to a usb that is 'outside' of the parts of the game that a player that isn't you can access

For starters i wouldnt have to purchase and run a server and risk it getting hacked, I could access the files anytime even if i didnt pay the internet bills because i went broke- etc...

latent glade
#

it's a hacking game, though

#

that sounds like a way to just not get hacked

#

in a hacking game

#

if we did have these USB drives, there would have to be a way to hack them

coarse night
#

yes- they would have to be "plugged in" to the computer

latent glade
#

so, a proxy that is online

#

that another player got the ip for

#

like

#

it's the same difference

You can effectively achieve exactly what you want with a rental and the restore system with the exclusion of it being free, so I'm not sure what value adding this as a separate mechanic would bring

It was just a suggestion ☠️

latent glade
#

don't get me wrong. it's a good suggestion... for the real world.
but for the game it's essentially making an existing game mechanic "free" and less hackable

we should have tape drives for large slow storage...

you haven't lived until you've held a solid copper hard drive
