I think your planet looks awkward because the shading isn't correct. Since the sun is behind the planet, the light should actually show up at a different angle. You can use a site like this one for a good reference.
I think you should use the more complex design. It looks better than the simple one to me, and you'll save a lot of time if you reuse details between the blocks. I don't think you'll waste too much time doing that compared to the simple design.

it is very boring to play because it has the same jumps over and over again. if you were to incorportate more variety into the level with speed changes, i think it would benifit the enjoyment
