It's that he's a complex character who recognises what he's done and wishes to atone for it, he knows he can't ask for forgiveness because it won't do anything for them, just trying to be a better person and a capable hero is the only thing he can do realistically

To be clear, I don't think Endeavor is a bad character. He's written very well, and Seitz plays him phenomenally and he does have moments where even I like him, but as a person, he sucks, and I would spit on him.

like Momo can do anything, but regardless of if the story makes sense of it she is supposedly limited in what she can create by her lipids, where Ibara can just create an outrageous expanse of vines.
